Glorious Sūta said:
3.1.23.2
agnitīrthābhidhe tīrthe sarvapātakanāśane ..
Having performed a ritual ablution in the sacred ford named Agnitīrtha, which destroys all sins,
3.1.23.3
snānaṃ kṛtvā viśuddhātmā cakratīrthaṃ tato vrajet .. 1 ..
one should then proceed, with a purified self, to Cakratīrtha.
3.1.23.4
yaṃyaṃ kāmaṃ samuddiśya cakratīrthe dvijottamāḥ ..
Whatever desire a mortal aims for, O best of brahmins,
3.1.23.5
snānaṃ samācarenmartyastaṃtaṃ kāmaṃ samaśnute .. 2 ..
when performing a ritual ablution at Cakratīrtha, that very desire he attains.
3.1.23.6
purāhirbudhnyanāmā tu maharṣiḥ saṃśita vrataḥ ..
Formerly, a great seer named Ahirbudhnya, strict in his vows,
3.1.23.7
sudarśanamupāstāsmiṃstapasvī gaṃdhamādane .. 3 ..
an ascetic, worshipped Sudarśana on this Gandhamādana [mountain].
3.1.23.8
tapasyaṃtaṃ muniṃ tatra rākṣasā ghorarūpiṇaḥ ..
While the sage was performing austerities there, rākṣasas of terrible forms,
3.1.23.9
abādhaṃta sadā viprāstapovighnaikatatparāḥ .. .. 4 ..
intent solely on obstructing austerities, constantly harassed him, O brahmins.
3.1.23.10
sudarśanaṃ tadāgatya bhaktarakṣaṇavāṃchayā ..
Then Sudarśana, having arrived there out of a desire to protect his devotee,
3.1.23.11
yātudhānānbādhamānānnyavadhīrlīlayā purā .. 5 ..
effortlessly struck down the tormenting demons of old.
3.1.23.12
tadāprabhṛti taccakraṃ bhaktaprārthanayā dvijāḥ ..
From that time forward, O brahmins, that discus [Sudarśana], at the request of the devotee,
3.1.23.13
ahirbudhnyakṛte tīrthe sannidhānaṃ sadā'karot .. 6 ..
constantly established its presence in the sacred ford made by Ahirbudhnya.
3.1.23.14
tadāprabhṛti tattīrthaṃ cakratīrthamitīryate ..
From that time forward, that sacred ford is called Cakratīrtha.
3.1.23.15
sudarśanaprasādena tatra tīrthe nimajjanāt .. 7 ..
By the grace of Sudarśana, through plunging into that sacred ford,
3.1.23.16
rakṣaḥpiśācā dikṛtā pīḍā nāstyeva karhicit ..
affliction caused by rakṣases, piśācas, and others never occurs at all.
3.1.23.17
snātvāsminpāvane tīrthe chinnapāṇiḥ purā raviḥ ..
Having bathed in this purifying sacred ford in ancient times, the sun god Ravi, whose hands had been cut off,
3.1.23.18
sa hiraṇyamayau pāṇī labdhavāṃstīrthavaibhavāt .. 8 .. ..
obtained two hands made of gold by the glory of this sacred ford.
3.1.23.19
.. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The seers said:
3.1.23.20
chinnapāṇiḥ kathamabhūdādityaḥ sūtanaṃdana ..
How did Āditya's hands come to be cut off, O son of Sūta?
3.1.23.21
yathā ca labdhavānpāṇī sauvarṇau tadvadasva naḥ .. 9 ..
And tell us how he obtained golden hands.
3.1.23.22
.. śrīsūta uvāca ..
Glorious Sūta said:
3.1.23.23
iṃdrādayaḥ surāḥ pūrvaṃ saṃtataṃ daityapīḍitāḥ .. 3.1.23.10 ..
Formerly, the gods, led by Indra, were continually afflicted by the Daityas.
3.1.23.24
kiṃ kurma iti saṃcitya saṃbhūya samamaṃtrayan ..
Pondering, "What shall we do?", they assembled and deliberated together.
3.1.23.25
bṛhaspatiṃ puraskṛtya maṃtrayitvā ciraṃ surāḥ .. 11 ..
Placing Bṛhaspati at their head, having deliberated for a long time, the gods,
3.1.23.26
turāsāhaṃ purodhāya dhāma svāyaṃbhuvaṃ yayuḥ ..
putting Turāṣāh at their forefront, went to the abode of the Self-born.
3.1.23.27
te brahmāṇaṃ samāsādya dṛṣṭvā stutvā ca bhaktitaḥ .. 12 ..
Having approached Brahmā, seen him, and praised him with devotion,
3.1.23.28
tato vyajijñapastasmai sveṣāmāgamakāraṇam .. ..
they then informed him of the purpose of their arrival.
3.1.23.29
.. surā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gods said:
3.1.23.30
bhagavanbhāratīnātha daityā hyasmānbalotkaṭāḥ .. 13 ..
"O Lord, husband of Bhāratī, the Daityas, exceedingly arrogant with might,
3.1.23.31
bādhaṃte satataṃ deva tatra brūhi pratikriyām ..
continually oppress us, O God! Tell us the remedy for this."
3.1.23.32
ityuktaḥ sa surairbrahmā tānāha kṛpayā vacaḥ .. 14 ..
Addressed thus by the gods, Brahmā spoke words to them with compassion:
3.1.23.33
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
3.1.23.34
mā bhaiṣṭa yūyaṃ vibudhāstatropāyaṃ bravīmyaham ..
"Do not fear, O gods! I will tell you the means in this matter.
3.1.23.35
māheśvaraṃ mahāyajñamasurāṇāṃ vināśanam .. .. 15 ..
A great sacrifice sacred to Maheśvara, which brings destruction to the asuras,
3.1.23.36
prārabhadhvaṃ surā yūyaṃ munibhistattvadarśibhiḥ ..
you, O gods, together with sages who see the truth, should begin.
3.1.23.37
ayaṃ ca daivataiḥ sarvairvidhilobhaṃ vinā kṛtaḥ .. 16 ..
And let this sacrifice sacred to Maheśvara, performed by all the deities without desire to curtail ritual rules,
3.1.23.38
māheśvaro mahāyajñaḥ kriyatāṃ gaṃdhamādane ..
be celebrated on Mount Gandhamādana.
3.1.23.39
yadi hyanyatra taṃ yajñaṃ kuryustadvibudharṣabhāḥ .. 17 ..
For if they were to perform that sacrifice elsewhere, O best of gods,
3.1.23.40
yajñavighnaṃ tadā kuryurdurātmānaḥ suradviṣaḥ ..
then the wicked-minded enemies of the gods would cause obstacles to the sacrifice.
3.1.23.41
kriyate yadyayaṃ yajño gaṃdhamādanaparvate .. 18 ..
If this sacrifice is performed on Mount Gandhamādana,
3.1.23.42
sudarśanaprasādena naiva vighno bhavettadā ..
then through the favor of Sudarśana, no obstacle will arise at all.
3.1.23.43
ahirbudhnyābhidhānasya maharṣergaṃdhamādane .. 19 ..
To grant favor to the great seer named Ahirbudhnya on Gandhamādana,
3.1.23.44
anugrahāya tattīrthe sannidhatte sudarśanam ..
Sudarśana is present in that sacred ford.
3.1.23.45
ataḥ kurudhvaṃ bho yūyaṃ taṃ yajñaṃ gaṃdhamādane .. 3.1.23.20 ..
Therefore, O gods, perform that sacrifice on Gandhamādana,
3.1.23.46
nātidūre cakratīrthādasurāṇāṃ vināśakam ..
which destroys the asuras, not far from Cakratīrtha."
3.1.23.47
tataste brahmavacasā sahasā gaṃdhamādanam.. 21 ..
Then, at the word of Brahmā, they quickly went to Gandhamādana,
3.1.23.48
bṛhaspatiṃ puraskṛtya jagmuryajñacikīrṣayā..
placing Bṛhaspati at their head, desirous of performing the sacrifice.
3.1.23.49
te praṇamya mahātmānamahirbudhnyaṃ munīśvaram ..22..
Having bowed to the great-souled Ahirbudhnya, lord of sages,
3.1.23.50
akalpayanyajñavāṭannātidūre tadāśramāt ..
they prepared the sacrificial enclosure not far from his hermitage.
3.1.23.51
yajñakarmasu niṣṇātaiḥ sahitāste tapodhanaiḥ .. 23 ..
Together with those whose wealth is austerity, experts in sacrificial rites,
3.1.23.52
iṣṭimārebhire devā asurāṇāṃ vināśinīm ..
the gods commenced the sacrifice that destroys the asuras.
3.1.23.53
tasminkarmaṇi hotāsītsvayameva bṛhaspatiḥ .. 24 ..
In that rite, Bṛhaspati himself was the hotṛ;
3.1.23.54
babhūva maitrāvaruṇo jayaṃtaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ ..
Jayanta, son of Pākaśāsana, was the maitrāvaruṇa;
3.1.23.55
acchāvāko babhūvātra vasūnāmaṣṭamo vasuḥ .. 25 ..
the eighth Vasu of the Vasus was the acchāvāka;
3.1.23.56
grāvastudabhavattatra śaktiputraḥ parāśaraḥ ..
Parāśara, son of Śakti, was the grāvastut;
3.1.23.57
aṣṭāvakro mahātejā adhvaryudhuramūḍhavān.. .. 26 ..
Aṣṭāvakra of great fiery energy bore the yoke of the adhvaryu;
3.1.23.58
tatra pratiprasthātābhūdviśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ..
the great sage Viśvāmitra was the pratiprasthātṛ;
3.1.23.59
neṣṭā babhūva varuṇa unnetā ca dhaneśvaraḥ .. 27 ..
Varuṇa was the neṣṭṛ, and the lord of wealth was the unnetṛ;
3.1.23.60
brahmā babhūva savitā yajñasyārdhadhuraṃ vahan ..
Savitṛ was the brahmā, bearing half the yoke of the sacrifice;
3.1.23.61
babhūva brāhmaṇācchaṃsī vasiṣṭho brahmaṇottamaḥ .. 28 ..
Vasiṣṭha, foremost of knowers of the Veda, was the brāhmaṇācchaṃsin;
3.1.23.62
āgnīdhro'bhūcchunaḥśepaḥ potā jātaśca pāvakaḥ ..
Śunaḥśepa was the āgnīdhra, and the sacrificial fire was the potṛ;
3.1.23.63
udgātā vāyurabhavatprastotā ca paretarāṭ .. .. 29 ..
Vāyu was the udgātṛ, and the king of the departed was the prastotṛ;
3.1.23.64
pratihartā tu tatrāsīdagastyaḥ kuṃbhasaṃbhavaḥ ..
Agastya, jar-born, was the pratihartṛ;
3.1.23.65
subrahmaṇyo madhucchaṃdā viśvāmitrātmajo mahān.. 3.1.23.30 ..
the great Madhucchandas, son of Viśvāmitra, was the subrahmaṇya;
3.1.23.66
yajamānaḥ svayamabhūddevarājaḥ puraṃdaraḥ..
Purandara, king of the gods, was himself the patron of the sacrifice;
3.1.23.67
upadraṣṭā babhūvātra vyāsaputraḥ śuko muniḥ .. 31 ..
and the sage Śuka, son of Vyāsa, was the upadraṣṭṛ.
3.1.23.68
tataste ṛtvijaḥ sarve devarājaṃ puraṃdaram ..
Then all those priests duly consecrated
3.1.23.69
vidhivaddīkṣayāṃcakrustatra māheśvare kratau ..32..
Purandara, king of the gods, in that sacrifice sacred to Maheśvara.
3.1.23.70
prāvartata mahāyajña evaṃ vai gaṃdhamādane ..
Thus the great sacrifice proceeded indeed on Gandhamādana.
3.1.23.71
sudarśanaprabhāvena duḥsahenātipīḍitāḥ .. 33 ..
Greatly afflicted by the unbearable majesty of Sudarśana,
3.1.23.72
nāviṃdannasurāstatra raṃdhraṃ yajñe pravartite ..
the asuras found no flaw there as the sacrifice proceeded.
3.1.23.73
evanniraṃtarāyo'sau prāvartata mahā kratuḥ .. 34 ..
Thus, free from hindrance, that great sacrifice went on.
3.1.23.74
bhakṣayaṃśca haristatra jajvāla hutavāhanaḥ ..
And there the sacrificial fire, carrying the oblation, blazed, consuming the offerings.
3.1.23.75
vidhivatkarmajālāni kṛtvādhvaryurasaṃbhramāt .. 35 ..
Having duly performed the series of rites without agitation,
3.1.23.76
maṃtrapūtaṃ puroḍāśaṃ juhavāmāsa pāvake ..
the adhvaryu poured the sacrificial cake, purified by mantras, into the fire.
3.1.23.77
hutaśeṣaṃ puroḍāśaṃ vibhajyādhvaryurādarāt .. 36 ..
Having reverently divided the remainder of the sacrificial cake offered in the fire,
3.1.23.78
ṛtvigbhyo hotṛmukhyebhyaḥ pradadau pāpanāśanam ..
the adhvaryu gave the sin-destroying portions to the priests, headed by the hotṛ.
3.1.23.79
savitre brahmaṇe caikamatyugrataratejasam .. .. 37 ..
And to Savitṛ, the brahmā, one portion of exceedingly fierce brilliance,
3.1.23.80
dadau tatra puroḍāśabhāgaṃ prāśitranāmakam ..
the share of the sacrificial cake named prāśitra, he gave there.
3.1.23.81
pratijagrāha pāṇibhyāṃ prāśitraṃ savitā tadā .. 38 ..
Then Savitṛ took the prāśitra with both hands.
3.1.23.82
savitrā spṛṣṭamātraṃ sattatprāśitraṃ durāsadam ..
As soon as it was touched by Savitṛ, that unapproachable prāśitra portion
3.1.23.83
tasya pāṇī praciccheda paśyatāṃ sarvaṛtvijām .. 39 ..
severed his hands while all the officiating priests were watching.
3.1.23.84
tataḥ saṃchinnapāṇiḥ sa prāśitreṇogratejasā ..
Then, his hands severed by the prāśitra possessing terrible fiery energy,
3.1.23.85
kimetaditi saṃtrasto viṣaṇṇavadano'bhavat .. 3.1.23.40 ..
he was terrified, saying, "What is this?", with a downcast face.
3.1.23.86
savitā ṛtvijaḥ sarvānsamāhūyedamabravīt ..
Calling together all the officiating priests, Savitṛ said this:
3.1.23.87
savitovāca ..
Savitṛ said:
3.1.23.88
puroḍāśasya bhāgo'yaṃ mama prāśitranāmakaḥ .. 41 ..
"This portion of the puroḍāśa named prāśitra
3.1.23.89
dattaściccheda matpāṇī miṣatsveva bhavatsvapi ..
was given to me, yet it severed my hands even while you were looking on.
3.1.23.90
ato bhavaṃtaḥ saṃbhūya sarva eva hi ṛtvijaḥ .. 42 ..
Therefore, all of you officiating priests coming together
3.1.23.91
kalpayaṃtāmimau pāṇī nocedyajñaṃ nihanmyamum ..
must restore these two hands, or else I shall destroy this sacrifice."
3.1.23.92
saviturvākyamākarṇya te sarve samaciṃtayan .. 43 ..
Hearing Savitṛ's words, they all deliberated.
3.1.23.93
tatra madhye munīṃdrāṇāṃ devānāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ ..
There in the midst of the foremost sages and all the gods,
3.1.23.94
aṣṭāvakro mahātejā ṛtvijastānabhāṣata .. 44 ..
Aṣṭāvakra, endowed with great fiery energy, spoke to those officiating priests.
3.1.23.95
.. aṣṭāvakra uvāca .. ..
Aṣṭāvakra said:
3.1.23.96
śṛṇudhvamṛtvijaḥ sarve mama vākyaṃ samāhitāḥ ..
"Listen with collected minds to my word, all you officiating priests:
3.1.23.97
mayi jīvati vipreṃdrā viriṃcānāṃ śataṃ gatam .. 45 ..
while I have lived, O foremost brahmins, a hundred Viriñcas have passed away.
3.1.23.98
jāyaṃte ca mriyaṃte ca caturānanakoṭayaḥ ..
Tens of millions of four-faced [Brahmās] are born and die,
3.1.23.99
paśyanneva ca tānsarvānahaṃ prāṇānadhārayam .. 46 ..
and watching them all, I have maintained my life.
3.1.23.100
tatra lokeśvarābhikhye vartamāne prajāpatau ..
During the tenure of a Prajāpati named Lokeśvara,
3.1.23.101
vipro hariharonāma nivasañchayāmalāpure .. 47 ..
a brahmin named Harihara was residing in Śyāmalāpura.
3.1.23.102
vyādhenāraṇyavāsena kelyarthaṃ lakṣyavedhinā ..
By a forest-dwelling hunter who was shooting at a target for sport,
3.1.23.103
chinnapādo'bhavadbāṇairlakṣya madhyaṃ samāgataḥ .. 48 ..
his feet were cut off with arrows as he stepped into the middle of the target.
3.1.23.104
sa gaṃdhamādanaṃ prāpya munibhiḥ preritastadā ..
Having gone to Gandhamādana, impelled then by sages,
3.1.23.105
snātvā ca munitīrthe'sminprāptavāṃścaraṇau purā .. 49 ..
and having bathed in this Munitīrtha, he regained his feet in ancient times.
3.1.23.106
tadā puṇyamidaṃ tīrthaṃ munitīrthamitīritam ..
Then, this sacred ford was called Munitīrtha;
3.1.23.107
idānīṃ cakratīrthākhyaṃ cakranāma tvaviṃdata .. 3.1.23.50 ..
now it is known as Cakratīrtha, having acquired the name of the Discus.
3.1.23.108
tadatra kriyatāṃ snānaṃ prāśitracchinnapāṇinā ..
Therefore, let a bath be taken here by him whose hands were severed by the prāśitra,
3.1.23.109
munitīrthe savitrāpi yuṣmākaṃ yadi rocate .. 51 ..
even by Savitṛ in Munitīrtha, if it pleases you."
3.1.23.110
ṛtvijaḥ kathitāstvevamaṣṭāvakramaharṣiṇā ..
Thus addressed by the great seer Aṣṭāvakra,
3.1.23.111
savitāramabhāṣaṃta sarva eva praharṣitāḥ .. 52 ..
the officiating priests, all overjoyed, spoke to Savitṛ:
3.1.23.112
savitaḥ snāhi tīrthe' smiṃstava pāṇī bhaviṣyataḥ ..
"O Savitṛ, bathe in this sacred ford; you will receive your hands.
3.1.23.113
aṣṭāvakro yathā prāha tathā kuru samāhitaḥ .. 53 ..
Do with a concentrated mind just as Aṣṭāvakra has said."
3.1.23.114
tataḥ sa savitā gatvā cakratīrthaṃ mahattaram ..
Then Savitṛ, having gone to the exceedingly great Cakratīrtha,
3.1.23.115
sasnau pāṇyoravāptyarthamiṣṭadāyini tatra saḥ .. 54 ..
bathed there in order to regain his hands, [in that ford] which grants desired wishes.
3.1.23.116
uttiṣṭhanneva sa tadā tatra snātvā sabhaktikam ..
Even as he was rising after bathing there with devotion,
3.1.23.117
yukto hiraṇmayābhyāṃ tu pāṇibhyāṃ samadṛśyata .. 55 ..
he was seen endowed with two golden hands.
3.1.23.118
hiraṇyapāṇiṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā jahṛṣuḥ sarvaṛtvijaḥ ..
Seeing him golden-handed, all the officiating priests rejoiced.
3.1.23.119
tataḥ samāpya taṃ yajñaṃ daityasaṃghānvijitya ca .. 56 ..
Then, having completed that sacrifice and having conquered the hosts of Daityas,
3.1.23.120
iṃdrādayaḥ surāḥ sarve sukhitāḥ svargamāyayuḥ ..
all the gods headed by Indra happily returned to heaven.
3.1.23.121
tasmādetatsamāgatya tīrthaṃ sarvaiśca mānavaiḥ .. 57 ..
Therefore, having arrived at this sacred ford, by all human beings
3.1.23.122
sevanīyaṃ prayatnena svasvābhīṣṭasya siddhaye ..
it should be resorted to with effort for the attainment of their respective desires:
3.1.23.123
aṃdhaiśca kuṇibhirmūkairbadhiraiḥ kubjakairapi .. 58 ...
by the blind, the crippled-handed, the mute, the deaf, the hunchbacked,
3.1.23.124
khaṃjaiḥ paṃgubhirapyetadaṃgahīnaistathāparaiḥ ..
by the limping and the lame, and by others deprived of limbs,
3.1.23.125
saṃchinnapāṇicaraṇaiḥ saṃchinnānyāṃgasaṃcayaiḥ .. 59 ..
those whose hands and feet are severed, and those who have lost other bodily parts,
3.1.23.126
manuṣyaiśca tathānyaiśca vikalāṃgasya pūrtaye ..
by men and others as well, for the restoration of deficient limbs,
3.1.23.127
sevanīyamidaṃ tīrthaṃ sarvābhīṣṭapradāyakam .. 3.1.23.60 ..
this sacred ford, granter of all desired things, should be resorted to.
3.1.23.128
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprāścakratīrthasya vaibhavam ..
Thus the majesty of Cakratīrtha has been told to you, O brahmins,
3.1.23.129
yatra snātvā purā chinnau pāṇī prāpa prabhākaraḥ .. 61 ..
where formerly, having bathed, the Light-maker regained his severed hands.
3.1.23.130
yaḥ paṭhedimamadhyāyaṃ śṛṇuyādvā samāhitaḥ ..
Whoever recites this chapter or listens to it attentively,
3.1.23.131
aṃgāni vikalānyasya pūrṇāni syurna saṃśayaḥ .. 62 ..
his deficient limbs will become whole, without doubt;
3.1.23.132
mokṣakāmasya martyasya muktiḥ syānnātra saṃśayaḥ .. 63 ...
for a mortal desiring liberation, liberation will ensue—there is no doubt about this.
3.1.23.133
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ tṛtīye brahmakhaṇḍe setumāhātmye cakratīrthapraśaṃsāyāmādityahiraṇmayapāṇyavāptivarṇanaṃnāma trayoviṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 23 .. .. cha ..
Thus ends the twenty-third chapter titled 'Description of the Sun's Regaining of Golden Hands in the Praise of Cakratīrtha' in the Setumāhātmya in the third Brahmakhaṇḍa of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
