devopakaraṇaṃ bhūri viśrāṇya śramavarjitaḥ .. 4.1.24.40 ..
having bestowed abundant equipment for the god, untiring,
4.24.82
vratopavāsaniyamaiḥ parikṣīṇakalevaraḥ ..
your body emaciated through vows, fasts, and observances,
4.24.83
madhyāhne nirjane tatra drakṣyasyekaṃ tapodhanam .. 41 ..
at midday in that deserted place you will see an ascetic:
4.24.84
atīvajīrṇavapuṣaṃ paripiṃgajaṭānvitam ..
with an extremely aged body, having reddish matted hair,
4.24.85
mūrtimaṃtaṃmiva prāṃśuṃ dharmaṃ janamanoharam.. 42..
tall, like Dharma incarnate, charming to people,
4.24.86
bhāraṃ śarīrayaṣṭeśca dṛḍhayaṣṭyāṃ samarpya ca ..
resting the weight of his staff-like body upon a firm staff,
4.24.87
garbhāgārādviniṣkramyābhyāyāṃtaṃraṃgamaṃḍape ..43..
emerging from the inner sanctum and approaching the theater pavilion.
4.24.88
upaviśya samīpe te prakṣyatyevamanukramāt ..
Sitting down beside you, he will ask you thus in order:
4.24.89
kosi tvaṃ kimihāsi tvaṃ dvitīya iva kastvayam .. 44 ..
“Who are you? Why are you here? Who is this, like a second [self] to you?
4.24.90
prāsādaḥ kāritaḥ kena jānāsyeṣa tato vada ..
By whom was this temple built? If you know, tell me.
4.24.91
asya liṃgasya kiṃ nāma prāyo jāne na vārdhakāt .. 45 ..
What is the name of this liṅga? On account of old age, I generally do not know.”
4.24.92
pṛṣṭastvamiti te nātha tadā vṛddha tapasvinā ..
Questioned thus by the aged ascetic, O Lord,
4.24.93
kathayiṣyasyahaṃ rājā vṛddhakāla iti śrutaḥ .. 46 ..
you will say: “I am a king, known as Vṛddhakāla,
4.24.94
dākṣiṇātya iha prāptastvetayā saha kāṃtayā ..
a southerner, arrived here together with this beloved wife.
4.24.95
dhyāyāmi liṃgametacca prārthayāmi na kiṃcana .. 47 ..
I meditate on this liṅga, and I ask for nothing.
4.24.96
prāsādasyāsya jaṭila svayaṃkārayitā śivaḥ ..
O ascetic with matted hair, Śiva himself is the builder of this temple.
4.24.97
viśeṣato'syaliṃgasya nāma no vedmi niścitam.. 48 ..
In particular, I do not know for certain the name of this liṅga.”
4.24.98
iti śrutvā narapatervākyaṃprāha jaṭādharaḥ ..
Hearing these words of the king, the ascetic with matted hair said:
4.24.99
satyamuktaṃ tvayaikaṃ hi liṃganāma na vetsi yat .. 49 ..
“You have spoken only one truth: that you do not know the name of the liṅga.
4.24.100
paśyeyaṃ tvāmahaṃ nityamupaviṣṭaṃ suniścalam ..
I see you constantly seated here, completely motionless.
4.24.101
śruto bhaviṣyati tava prāsādo yena kāritaḥ .. 4.1.24.50 ..
Surely it has been heard by you by whom this temple was built.
4.24.102
mamāgre tatsamācakṣva yadi jānāsi tattvataḥ ..
Tell me that plainly, if you know in truth.”
4.24.103
ākarṇyeti vacastasya punaḥ prāha bhavāniti ... 51 ..
Hearing his speech, you will say again:
4.24.104
kartā kārayitā śaṃbhuḥ kimatathyaṃ bravīmyaham ..
“Śambhu is the maker and the one who causes it to be made; what untruth am I speaking?
4.24.105
athavā ciṃtayā kiṃ me tapasvinnanayā vibho .. 52 ..
Or else, O powerful ascetic, what does this concern matter to me?”
4.24.106
iti tvayi sthite joṣaṃ sa punarvṛddhatāpasaḥ ..
When you remain silent, that aged ascetic again [will say]:
4.24.107
pipāsurasmi pānīyamānīyāśu prayaccha me .. 53 ..
“I am thirsty; fetch water quickly and give it to me.”
4.24.108
iti tena ca nunnastvaṃ vāryānīya ca kūpataḥ ..
Urged thus by him, you will bring water from the well
4.24.109
pāyayiṣyasi taṃ vṛddhaṃ tāpasaṃ tatkṣaṇācca saḥ .. 54 ..
and give it to that aged ascetic to drink; and in that instant he,
4.24.110
tadaṃbupānato bhūyātsupārvaṇa śaśiprabhaḥ ..
from drinking that water, will become endowed with the radiance of the full moon,
4.24.111
taruṇo rūpasaṃpannaḥ kośonmuktorago yathā .. 55 ..
young, endowed with beauty, like a serpent freed from its skin.
4.24.112
jātāścaryeṇa bhavatā punarevābhyabhāṣi saḥ ..
Filled with wonder, you will speak to him once more:
4.24.113
kaḥ prabhāvo hi bhagavanneṣa yena bhavānpunaḥ .. 56 ..
“What power is this indeed, O venerable one, by which you
4.24.114
parityajyātra jarasaṃ na vo bhrājasi sāṃpratam ..
have discarded old age here and now shine as young?
4.24.115
asti cedavakāśaste tato brūhi tapodhana .. 57 ..
If you have the time, then tell me, O ascetic.”
4.24.116
tapodhana uvāca .. ..
The ascetic said:
4.24.117
vṛddhakālakṣitipate jāne tvāṃ sumahāmate ..
“O King Vṛddhakāla of great intellect, I know you;
4.24.118
imāmapi ca jāne'haṃ tava patnīṃ pativratām.. 58 ..
and I also know this devoted wife of yours.
4.24.119
janmano'smādiyaṃ rājannāsīdviprasya kanyakā ..
Prior to this birth, O King, she was the daughter of a brahmin,
4.24.120
turvasorvedavapuṣaḥ śubhācārā śubhānanā .. 59 ..
of Turvasu, who was the embodiment of the Veda, herself of auspicious conduct and fair face.
4.24.121
tena dattā vivāhārthaṃ naidhruvāya mahātmane ..
By him she was given in marriage to the noble-minded Naidhruva;
4.24.122
sa ca kālavaśaṃ prāpto naidhruvo'prāptayauvanaḥ .. 4.1.24.60 ..
and that Naidhruva fell under the power of Time before reaching youth.
4.24.123
vaidhavyaṃ pālayaṃtyeṣā mṛtā'vaṃtyāṃ śubhavratā ..
Observing widowhood, keeping auspicious vows, she died in Avantī.
4.24.124
tena puṇyena saṃjātā pāṃḍyasya nṛpateḥ sutā .. 61 ..
Through that merit, she was born as the daughter of the Pāṇḍya king.
4.24.125
pariṇītā tvayā rājanpativrataratā sadā ..
Wedded by you, O King, ever devoted to her husband,
4.24.126
tvayā saheha saṃprāptā muktiṃ prāpsyatyanuttamām .. 62 ..
arrived here along with you, she will attain unsurpassed liberation.
4.24.127
ayodhyāyāmathāvaṃtyāṃ mathurāyāmathāpi vā ..
Whether in Ayodhyā or in Avantī, or in Mathurā,
4.24.128
dvāravatyāṃ ca kāṃcyāṃ vā māyāpuryāmatho nṛpa .. 63 ..
or in Dvāravatī, or in Kāñcī, or in Māyāpurī, O King,
4.24.129
api pātakino ye ca kālena nidhanaṃ gatāḥ ..
even sinners who meet their death in the course of time—
4.24.130
te hi svargādihāgatya kāśyāṃ mokṣamavāpnuyuḥ .. 64 ..
they, coming here from heaven, will indeed attain liberation in Kāśī.
4.24.131
avaimi tvāmapi nṛpadvijo'bhūḥ pūrvajanmani ..
I know you too, O King: in your previous birth you were a brahmin,
4.24.132
māthuraḥ śivaśarmākhyo māyāpuryāṃ bhavānmṛtaḥ .. 65 ..

tatpuṇyātprāpya vaikuṃṭhaṃ bhuktvā bhogānmanoramān ..
Having attained Vaikuṇṭha through that merit and enjoyed delightful pleasures,

4.24.137
anyacca śṛṇu rājeṃdra tvayā yatsamudīritam ..
Moreover, listen, O king of kings, to what was spoken by you:
4.24.138
kartā kārayitā śaṃbhuḥ prāsādasyeti tatsphuṭam .. 68 ..
'Śambhu is the maker and the one who causes the temple to be made'—that is plainly true. (68)
4.24.139
sukṛtaṃ naiva satatamākhyātavyaṃ kadācana ..
A good deed should never be constantly proclaimed;
4.24.140
kṛtaṃ mayeti kathanātpuṇyaṃ kṣayati tatkṣaṇāt .. 69 ..
from saying 'this was done by me', merit vanishes that very instant. (69)
4.24.141
tasmātsarvaprayatnena gopanīyaṃ nidhānavat ..
Therefore, with every effort, it must be concealed like a treasure;
4.24.142
sukṛtaṃ kīrtanādvyarthaṃ bhavedbhasmahutaṃ tathā.. 4.1.24.70 ..
a good deed becomes futile by boasting, just like an oblation offered into ashes. (70)
4.24.143
niścitaṃ viśvanāthena preritena tvayā'nagha ..
Prompted indeed by Viśvanātha, O sinless one,
4.24.144
kṛtaṃ hi kṛtakṛtyena prāsādādiha vedmyaham .. 71 ..
the temple and the rest have been built here by you whose purpose is accomplished; so I know. (71)

This liṅga, O king, named Vṛddhakāleśvara,
4.24.146
jānīhyanādisaṃsiddhaṃ nimittaṃ kiṃtu vai bhavān .. 72 ..
know to be established from beginningless time, yet you indeed were the instrumental cause. (72)
4.24.147
darśanātsparśanāttasya pūjanācchravaṇānnateḥ ..
From seeing, touching, worshipping, hearing of, and bowing to
4.24.148
vṛddhakāleśaliṃgasya sarvaṃ prāpnoti vāṃchitam .. 73 ..

kūpaḥ kālodako nāma jarāvyādhivighātakṛt ..
The well named Kālodaka destroys old age and disease;

yadīya jalapānena mātuḥstanyamapānavān .. 74 ..
by drinking its water, one never drinks mother’s milk again. (74)
4.24.151
kṛtakūpodakasnānaḥ kṛtaitalliṃgapūjanaḥ ..
Having bathed in the well's water and worshipped this liṅga,

4.24.153
na kuṣṭhaṃ na ca visphoṭā naraṃghā na vicarcikā ..
Neither leprosy, nor boils, nor blemishes, nor scabies,
4.24.154
pītātspṛṣṭātpratiṣṭhaṃti kaphaḥ kālatamodakāt .. 76 ..

Vyāsa said:
Listen, Sūta, I will recount the story of the pot-born [sage],
hearing which a man becomes free from passion and a vessel of knowledge. (1)
Having circumambulated the mountain named Śrī,
the pot-born one, together with his wife, then beheld the vast, charming grove of Skanda, (2)
filled with flowers in all seasons, with trees bearing succulent fruits,
rich in edible roots and tubers, with trees having excellent bark, (3)
frequented by herds of wild beasts, surrounded by rivers and pools,
with clear and deep lakes, the supreme essence of all the earth, (4)
resounding with various birds, inhabited by diverse sages,
as if it were the sole gathering-place of austerity and the abode of prosperity. (5)
There is a mountain there named Lohita, possessing the splendour of the golden mountain,
with lovely caves and waterfalls, its ridges shining like peaks, (6)
as if it were a single piece of Kailāsa that had descended here into the realm of action
to practice austerity intensely, endowed with many wonders. (7)
There the best of sages, Agastya, beheld the six-faced one in person.
Having bowed prostrate on the ground together with his wife, the one of great austerity (8)
praised the son of Girijā with hymns originating from the Vedas
and with a hymn of his own composition, with his hands folded in reverence. (9)
Agastya said:
Salutations to the one whose lotus feet are worshipped by the host of gods, who creates nectar,
who has six faces, boundless valour, and is the source of joy to Gaurī’s heart! (10)
Salutations to you, who removes the distress of the surrendered, the fulfiller of all wishes,
the granter of chariots for crossing over, the slayer of the fierce demon Tāraka! (11)
To the unformed yet formed, of a thousand forms, possessing qualities, the locus of qualities, higher than the high,
beyond the boundless shore, beyond the prior and the posterior, salutations to you whose mount is the peacock! (12)
Salutations to you, the best among knowers of Brahman, clad in space, abiding in the firmament,
golden-hued, golden-armed; salutations to the golden one, the golden-seeded! (13)
To the one whose nature is austerity, rich in austerity, the bestower of the fruits of austerity...
