1.1.5.45
madhye tapasvināṃ tvaṃ tu draṣṭavya iti cādiśat .. 22 ..
instructed me: 'You should see him among the practitioners of austerity.'
1.1.5.46
āgamānāṃ śivoktānāṃ vedānāmapi pāragaḥ ..
You have reached the furthest shore of the Vedas and of the Āgamas proclaimed by Śiva;
1.1.5.47
tapasā śaṃbhubhaktānāṃ tvameva śivasaṃmataḥ .. 23 ..
through austerity you alone among the devotees of Śambhu are approved by Śiva.
1.1.5.48
aruṇācala nāmnāhaṃ tiṣṭhāmītyabravīcchivaḥ ...
Śiva said: 'I abide under the name of Aruṇācala;
1.1.5.49
asyācalasya māhātmyaṃ śrotavyaṃ ca bhavanmukhāt .. 24 ..
and the greatness of this mountain is to be heard from your mouth.'
1.1.5.50
prāptāsmyahaṃ tapaḥ kartumaruṇācalasannidhau ..
I have come to perform austerity in the presence of Aruṇācala;
1.1.5.51
bhavatāṃ darśanādeva svayamīśaḥ prasīdati .. 25 ..
the Lord himself is pleased merely by the sight of you.
1.1.5.52
śivabhaktena saṃbhāṣā śivasaṃkīrttanaśravaḥ ..
Conversation with a devotee of Śiva, listening to the glorification of Śiva,
1.1.5.53
śivaliṃgārcanaṃ loke vapurgrahaphalodayaḥ .. 26 ..
and worship of the Śivaliṅga are in this world the dawn of the fruit of taking a bodily form.
1.1.5.54
tasmānmamaitanmāhātmyaṃ śrotavyaṃ bhavato mukhāt ..
Therefore, this greatness must be heard by me from your mouth;
1.1.5.55
suvyaktamupadeśena jñānato'si pitā mama .. 27 ..
through your clear teaching and through knowledge, you are my father."
1.1.5.56
iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā gautamastapasāṃ nidhiḥ ..
Hearing her words, Gautama, a treasure-house of austerity,
1.1.5.57
ācakhyau giriśaṃ dhyāyannaruṇācalavaibhavam .. 28 ..
meditating on Giriśa, recounted the glory of Aruṇācala:
1.1.5.58
ajñātamiva yatkiṃcitpṛcchyate ca punastvayā ..
"As if unknowing, whatever you ask anew,
1.1.5.59
avaimi sarvavidyānāṃ māyā śaivī tvameva sā .. 29 ..
I understand: you are that very māyā of Śiva, the source of all sciences.
1.1.5.60
athavā bhaktavaktreṇa śivavaibhavasaṃśravaḥ ..
Or rather, hearing the glory of Śiva through the mouth of a devotee
1.1.5.61
śikṣaṇaṃ śāṃbhavaṃ teṣāṃ tava tuṣṭeśca kāraṇam .. 1.3.1.5.30 ..
is the instruction belonging to Śambhu for them, and the cause of your satisfaction.
1.1.5.62
paṭhitānāṃ ca vedānāṃ yadāvṛttaphalāvaham ..
Just as the Vedas, when recited, bear the fruit of repeated study,
1.1.5.63
vadatāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ loke śivasaṃkīrttanaṃ tathā .. 31 ..
likewise does the glorification of Śiva in this world for those who speak and listen.
1.1.5.64
saphalānyadya sarvāṇi tapāṃsi caritāni me ..
Today all the austerities I have performed have borne fruit,
1.1.5.65
yadahaṃ śaṃbhunādiṣṭaṃ māhātmyaṃ kīrttaye śrutam .. 32 ..
since I proclaim the māhātmya heard as commanded by Śambhu.
1.1.5.66
śivāśivaprasādena māhātmyamidamadbhutam .. 33 ..
By the grace of Śiva and Śivā, this wondrous māhātmya,
1.1.5.67
aruṇācalamāhātmyaṃ duritakṣayakāraṇam ..
the Aruṇācala-māhātmya, which is the cause of the destruction of sins—
1.1.5.68
śrūyatāmanavadyāṃgi purāvṛttamidaṃ mahat .. 34 ..
let this great ancient event be heard, O lady of faultless limbs!
1.1.5.69
aruṇādrimayaṃ liṃgamāvirbhūtaṃ yathā purā ..
How the liṅga made of the red mountain manifested in ancient times,
1.1.5.70
na śakyate punarvaktumaśeṣaṃ vaktrakoṭibhiḥ .. 35 ..
the Aruṇācala-māhātmya, cannot be told completely
1.1.5.71
aruṇācalamāhātmyaṃ brahmaṇāmapi koṭibhiḥ..
even by tens of millions of mouths of tens of millions of Brahmās.
1.1.5.72
brahmaṇā viṣṇunā pūrvaṃ somabhāskaravahnibhiḥ .. 36 ..
Anciently worshipped by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, the Moon, the Sun, and Agni,
1.1.5.73
indrādibhiśca dikpālaiḥ pūjitaścāṣṭasiddhaye ..
and by the guardians of the directions, Indra and the others, for the attainment of the eight perfections;
1.1.5.74
siddhacāraṇagaṃdharva yakṣavidyādharoragaiḥ .. 37 ..
revered by siddhas, cāraṇas, gandharvas, yakṣas, vidyādharas, and uragas,
1.1.5.75
khagaiśca munibhirdivyaiḥ siddhayogibhirarcitaḥ ..
and by birds, divine sages, and perfected yogins;
1.1.5.76
tattatpāpanivṛttyarthaṃ tattadīpsitasiddhaye .. 38 ..
for the cessation of various sins, and for the attainment of various desired ends,
1.1.5.77
ārādhito'yaṃ bhagavānaruṇādripatiḥ śivaḥ ..
this Lord Śiva, the master of the red mountain, has been worshipped.
1.1.5.78
dṛṣṭo harati pāpāni sevito vāṃchitapradaḥ .. 39 ..
When seen, he destroys sins; when served, he grants desires.
1.1.5.79
kīrtitopi janairdūraiḥ śoṇādririti muktidaḥ ..
Even when glorified from afar by people as 'the Red Mountain', he grants liberation.
1.1.5.80
tejaḥstaṃbhamayaṃ rūpamaruṇādririti śrutam .. 1.3.1.5.40 ..
The form composed of the pillar of fire, known as the Red Mountain—
1.1.5.81
dhyāyanto yoginaścitte śivasāyujyamāpnuyuḥ ..
meditating upon it in their minds, yogins attain union with Śiva.
1.1.5.82
dattaṃ hutaṃ ca yatkiṃcijjaptaṃ cānyattapaḥ kṛtam .. 41 ..
Whatever is given, offered in fire, whispered in recitation, and whatever other austerity is performed—
1.1.5.83
akṣayyaṃ bhavati prāptamaruṇācalasaṃnidhau ..
obtained in the presence of Aruṇācala, it becomes imperishable.
1.1.5.84
purā brahmā ca viṣṇuśca śivatejoṃśasaṃbhavau ..42..
In ancient times, Brahmā and Viṣṇu, who arose from portions of Śiva’s fiery energy,
1.1.5.85
sāhaṃkārau yuyudhatuḥ parasparajigīṣayā ..
filled with egoism, fought with the desire to conquer one another.
1.1.5.86
tathā tayorgarvaśāṃtyai yogidhyeyaḥ sadāśivaḥ .. 43..
Then, to subdue the pride of both, Sadāśiva, the object of yogins' meditation,
1.1.5.87
agnitejomayaṃ rūpamādimadhyāṃtavarjitam ..
having assumed a form composed of the fiery energy of fire, devoid of beginning, middle, and end,
1.1.5.88
saṃprāpya tasthau tanmadhye diśo daśa vibhāsayan .. 44 ..
stood between them, illuminating the ten directions.
1.1.5.89
tejaḥstaṃbhasya tasyātha draṣṭumādyaṃtabhāgayoḥ ..
Then, in order to see the beginning and ending portions of that pillar of fire,
1.1.5.90
haṃsakroḍatanū kṛtvā jagmaturdyāṃ rasātalam .. 45 ..
having assumed the bodies of a swan and a boar, they went to heaven and to the netherworld.
1.1.5.91
tau viṣaṇṇamukhau dṛṣṭvā bhagavānkaruṇānidhiḥ ..
Seeing them with dejected faces, the Lord, the ocean of compassion,
1.1.5.92
āvirbabhūva ca tayorvaraṃ prādādabhīpsitam ..46..
manifested himself and granted them their desired boon.
1.1.5.93
tatprārthitaśca deveśo yātaḥ sthāvaraliṃgatām ..
And prayed to by them, the Lord of gods assumed the condition of an immovable liṅga;
1.1.5.94
aruṇādririti khyātaḥ praśāṃtaḥ saṃprakāśate ..47..
renowned as the Red Mountain, tranquil, he shines forth.
1.1.5.95
divyadundubhinirghoṣairapsarogītanarttanaiḥ..
With the sounds of divine drums, with the songs and dances of apsarases,
1.1.5.96
pūjyate taijasaṃ liṃgaṃ puṣpavṛṣṭiśataiḥ sadā .. 48 ..
this fiery liṅga is constantly worshipped with hundreds of showers of flowers.
1.1.5.97
brahmaṇāmapyatītānāṃ purā ṣaṇṇavateḥ prabhuḥ ..
Anciently, after ninety-six Brahmās had passed away, the Lord
1.1.5.98
viṣṇunābhisamudbhūto brahmā lokānsasarja hi .. 49 ..
Brahmā, arisen from Viṣṇu's navel, created the worlds.
1.1.5.99
sa kadācittapovighnaṃ kartukāmena yoginām ..
Once, requested by Indra who wished to create an obstacle
1.1.5.100
iṃdreṇa prārthito brahmā sasarja lalitāṃ striyam .. 1.3.1.5.50 ..
to the austerity of yogins, Brahmā created a charming woman.
1.1.5.101
lāvaṇyaguṇasaṃpūrṇāmālokya kamalekṣaṇām ..
Beholding that lotus-eyed woman, replete with the qualities of loveliness,
1.1.5.102
mumoha kaṃdarpaśaraiḥ sa viddhahṛdayo vidhiḥ .. 51 ..
Brahmā was bewildered, his heart pierced by the arrows of the god of love.
1.1.5.103
spraṣṭukāmaṃ tamālokya brahmāṇaṃ kamalāsanam ..
Seeing Brahmā, whose seat is the lotus, desiring to touch her,
1.1.5.104
natvā pradakṣiṇavyājādgaṃtumaicchadvarāpsarāḥ .. 52 ..
the excellent apsaras, bowing down, wished to leave under the pretext of circumambulation.
1.1.5.105
asyāṃ pradakṣiṇāṃ bhaktyā kurvāṇāyāṃ prajāpateḥ ..
As she performed the circumambulation of the Lord of Creatures with devotion,
1.1.5.106
catasṛbhyo'pi digbhyo'sya mukhānyudabhavankṣaṇāt .. 53 ..
in an instant faces arose on him facing all four directions.
1.1.5.107
sā bālā pakṣiṇī bhūtvā gaganaṃ samagāhata ..
Becoming a bird, that maiden plunged into the sky;
1.1.5.108
punaśca khagarūpeṇa samāyāṃtaṃ samīkṣya sā .. 54 ..
and seeing him again pursuing her in the form of a bird,
1.1.5.109
śaraṇaṃ yācamānā sā śoṇādrimimamāśrayat ..
begging for refuge, she resorted to this Red Mountain:
1.1.5.110
brahmaṇā viṣṇunā ca tvamadṛṣṭapadaśekharaḥ .. 55 ..
'You, whose feet and crest were unseen by Brahmā and Viṣṇu—
1.1.5.111
rakṣa māmaruṇādrīśa śaraṇya śaraṇāgatām ..
protect me, O Lord of the Red Mountain, refuge, who have sought your refuge!'
1.1.5.112
iti tasyāṃ bhayārttāyāṃ krośaṃtyāmaruṇācalāt .. 56 ..
As she, distressed by fear, cried out in this way from Aruṇācala,
1.1.5.113
udabhūtsthāvarālliṃgādvyādhaḥ kaściddhanurddharaḥ ..
there arose from the immovable liṅga a certain hunter bearing a bow.
1.1.5.114
saṃdhāya sāyakaṃ cāpe sameghagaganadyutiḥ .. 57 ..
With an arrow fixed to his bow, possessing the lustre of a sky filled with clouds—
1.1.5.115
niṣāde purato dṛṣṭe mohastasya nanāśa hi ..
when that tribal hunter was seen before him, his delusion was indeed destroyed.
1.1.5.116
tataḥ prasannahṛdayotinamraḥ kamalodbhavaḥ.. 58 ..
Then, with a serene heart, utterly humble, the lotus-born [Brahmā]
1.1.5.117
namaścakre śaraṇyāya śoṇādripataye tadā ..
then bowed down to the refuge, the Lord of the Red Mountain:
1.1.5.118
sarvapāpakṣayakṛte namastubhyaṃ pinākine .. 59 ..
'Salutations to you, the wielder of the Pināka, the destroyer of all sins;
1.1.5.119
aruṇācalarūpāya bhakvavaśyāya śaṃbhave ..
salutations to Śambhu, who has the form of Aruṇācala, who is subservient to devotion!'
1.1.5.120
ajānatāṃ svabhaktānāmakarmavinivarttane .. 1.3.1.5.60 ..
to turn your devotees away from improper actions when they are ignorant?
1.1.5.121
tvadanyaḥ kaḥ prabhuḥ kartumaśakyaṃ cāpi dehinām ..
Who other than you is able to accomplish what is impossible for embodied beings?
1.1.5.122
upasaṃhara me dehaṃ tejasā pāpaniścayam .. 61 ..
With your fiery splendour, dissolve my body that resolved upon sin,
1.1.5.123
anyaṃ vā sṛja viśvātmanbrahmāṇaṃ lokasṛṣṭaye ..
or create another Brahmā, O Soul of the Universe, for the creation of the worlds!"
1.1.5.124
atha tasya vacaḥ śrutvā śivo dīnasya vedhasaḥ .. 62 ..
Then, hearing the words of that wretched creator,
1.1.5.125
uvāca karuṇāmūrtirbhūtvā caṃdrārddhaśekharaḥ ..
Śiva, the crescent-crested lord, becoming the embodiment of compassion, spoke:
1.1.5.126
dattaḥ kālastava mayā puraiva na nivartyate .. 63 ..
"Your lifespan was granted by me long ago; it is not revoked.
1.1.5.127
kaṃ vā rāgādayo doṣā na bādheranprabhusthitam ..
Who, indeed, placed in authority, would passions and other defects not afflict?
1.1.5.128
tasmāddūrasthito'pyetadaruṇācalasaṃjñitam..64..
Therefore, even while remaining far away, worship this fiery liṅga
1.1.5.129
bhajasva taijasaṃ liṃgaṃ sarvadoṣanivṛttaye ..
named Aruṇācala, for the cessation of all faults.
1.1.5.130
vācikaṃ mānasaṃ pāpaṃ kāyikaṃ vā ca yadbhavet ..65..
Whatever sin there may be, committed by speech, mind,
1.1.5.131
vinaśyati kṣaṇātsarvamaruṇācaladarśanāt ..
or body, it all perishes in an instant from the darśana of Aruṇācala.
1.1.5.132
pradakṣiṇā namaskāraiḥ smaraṇairarcanaiḥ stavaiḥ ..66..
Through circumambulations, prostrations, remembrances, worship, and praises,
1.1.5.133
aruṇādrirayaṃ nṛṇāṃ sarvakalmaṣanāśanaḥ ..
this Aruṇa mountain destroys all the sins of men.
1.1.5.134
kailāse meruśṛṃge vā svasthāneṣu kalādriṣu ..67..
On Kailāsa, on the peak of Meru, in my own abodes, or on mountains of divine parts,
1.1.5.135
saṃdṛśyaḥ kaścidevāhamaruṇādrirayaṃ svayam ..
I am seen only by some, but this Aruṇa mountain is myself directly,
1.1.5.136
yacchṛṃgadarśanānnṝṇāṃ cakṣurlābhena kevalam .. 68 ..
by merely beholding whose peak with the attainment of eyesight,
1.1.5.137
bhavetsarvāghanāśaśca lābhaśca jñānacakṣuṣaḥ ..
destruction of all sins occurs for men, along with the attainment of the eye of knowledge.
1.1.5.138
madaṃśasaṃbhavo brahmā svanāmnā brahmapuṣkare .. 69 ..
Born from a portion of me, Brahmā bathed here in the Brahmapuṣkara [pool] named after himself;
1.1.5.139
atra snātaḥ purā brahmanmoho'gājjagatīpateḥ ..
in ancient times, O priest, the delusion of the lord of the earth disappeared.
1.1.5.140
snātvā tvaṃ brahmatīrthe māṃ samabhyarcya kṛtāṃjaliḥ .. 1.3.1.5.70 ..
Having bathed in the Brahmatīrtha, worshipping me with joined palms,
1.1.5.141
maunī pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā viśvātmanbhava vijvaraḥ ..71..
observing silence and performing circumambulation, be free of distress, O Soul of the Universe!"
1.1.5.142
iti vacanamudīrya viśvanāthaṃ sthitamaruṇācalarūpato maheśam ..
Having uttered these words to the Lord of the Universe, Maheśa, who stood in the form of Aruṇācala,
1.1.5.143
atha sarasi nimajya padmajanmā duritaharaṃ samapūjayatkrameṇa..72..
the lotus-born [Brahmā] then dipped into the lake and worshipped the dispeller of sins in due order.
1.1.5.144
imamaruṇagirīśameṣa vedhā yamaniyamādiviśuddhacittayogaḥ ..
Having worshipped this Lord of Aruṇagiri clearly and with respectful offerings,
1.1.5.145
sphuṭataramabhipūjya sopacāraṃ gatadurito'tha jagāma cādhipatyam ..73..
his mind cleansed by the discipline of restraints and observances, the creator, freed of sin, returned to his dominion.
1.1.5.146
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe'ruṇācalamāhātmye pūrvārdhe brahmapuṣkaramāhātmyavarṇanaṃnāma pañcamo'dhyāyaḥ..5.. ..
Thus ends the fifth chapter, named 'Description of the Glory of Brahmapuṣkara', in the first half of the Aruṇācalamāhātmya in the first book, the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skandapurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses.
