"Instruct me, O lord, as to how eternal Śambhu
1.2.10.3
anujagrāha mohāṃdho vaikuṇṭhaparameṣṭhinau .. 1 ..
favored Vaikuṇṭha and Parameṣṭhin, who were blinded by delusion."

Nandikeśvara said:
1.2.10.5
śṛṇuṣva sarvaṃ vakṣyāmi vistareṇa yathātatham ..
"Listen, I shall explain everything in detail, exactly as it was,
1.2.10.6
yadeva devo vidadhe dayayā bhaktavatsalaḥ .. 2 ..
whatever the god, who is affectionate to his devotees, did out of compassion.
1.2.10.7
athodasthāttayormadhye tathā vivadamānayoḥ ..
Then, between the two who were thus disputing,
1.2.10.8
jyotiḥstaṃbhatvamabhyetya rodoraṃdhranirodhakaḥ .. 3 ..
there arose [Śiva], assuming the form of a pillar of light, blocking the cavity between heaven and earth."
1.2.10.9
mahatā jṛṃbhamāṇena tasya brahmāṃḍabhedinaḥ ..
As that [pillar], splitting the cosmic egg, swelled with immense size,
1.2.10.10
antarikṣamatiśyāmaṃ samutkṣiptamivābhavata .. 4 ..
the intermediate space, exceedingly dark, seemed to be cast upwards. (4)
1.2.10.11
viṣvagvivarṇatā tasya jyotirliṃgasya tejasā ..
By the radiance of that liṅga of light, turning everything colorless on every side,
1.2.10.12
diśo virejire sadyo dūravistāritā iva .. 5 ..
the directions instantly shone as if extended far away. (5)
1.2.10.13
tīvraistasya mahājvālaiḥ śoṣitā iva sāgarāḥ ..
As though dried up by its fierce, mighty flames,
1.2.10.14
vimuktavīcisaṃkṣobhāḥ svāmeva prakṛtiṃ yayuḥ .. 6 ..
the oceans, freed from the agitation of waves, returned to their original nature. (6)
1.2.10.15
vyadyotaṃta divi prāgvadvahāstārāgaṇaiḥ saha ..
Planets, along with hosts of stars, shone in the sky as before,
1.2.10.16
tejaḥstaṃbhātsamudbhinnāḥ sphuliṃgā iva kecana ..7..
like sparks bursting forth from that pillar of fire. (7)
1.2.10.17
tejasā tasya śoṇena gairikeṇeva raṃjitāḥ ..
Tinged by its crimson light as if with red chalk,
1.2.10.18
bhaumaraviśriyaṃ sarve'pyavahannavanībhṛtaḥ ..8..
all the mountains bore the splendor of earthly suns. (8)
1.2.10.19
samudrāstatpraticchāyānirbharāśliṣṭa yādasaḥ ..
The oceans, clinging tightly to aquatic creatures reflected in them,
1.2.10.20
padmarāgaśilākhaṇḍe ghaṭitā iva rejire .. 9 ..
shone as if fashioned upon a slab of ruby stone. (9)
1.2.10.21
pravālagucchaiḥ pratyagrairlaṃbitā iva pādapāḥ ..
The trees appeared as if hung with fresh clusters of coral,
1.2.10.22
nadyaśca nirbharotphullakahlārā iva rejire.. 1.3.2.10.10 ..
and the rivers shone as if crowded with fully blossomed red water-lilies. (10)
1.2.10.23
mahī kuṃkumalipteva diśaḥ siṃdūritā iva ..
The earth seemed smeared with saffron, the directions dusted with vermilion,
1.2.10.24
sarvāruṇamiva vyoma samagatpratyadṛśyata .. 11 ..
and the entire sky appeared all red. (11)
1.2.10.25
brahmāṃḍakarparamabhūttanmahaḥ pūritāṃtaram ..
The vessel of the cosmic egg, filled inside with that brilliance,
1.2.10.26
śoṇiteneva saṃpūrṇaṃ kapālaṃ kṛttivāsasaḥ .. 12 ..
became like the skull-bowl of [Śiva] clad in hide, filled with blood. (12)
1.2.10.27
evaṃ pravarddhamānena tejaḥstambhena tena ca ..
And by that ever-growing pillar of fire,
1.2.10.28
aruṇākāratāṃ bheje viśvaṃ sthāvarajaṃgamam .. 13 ..
the universe, moving and unmoving, took on a dawn-red form. (13)
1.2.10.29
tejoliṃgaṃ tadāścaryaṃ dṛṣṭvā tyaktamithaḥ krudhau ..
Seeing that marvelous liṅga of fire, their mutual anger cast aside,
1.2.10.30
aciṃtayetāmekaikaṃ caturmukhacaturbhujau .. 14 ..
the four-faced one [Brahmā] and the four-armed one [Viṣṇu] each began to ponder: (14)
1.2.10.31
kimeṣa vasudhāṃ bhittvā śeṣādīnāṃ phaṇābhṛtām ..
“Can this be a mass of brilliance from the hood-jewels of serpent-kings like Śeṣa,
1.2.10.32
phaṇāmāṇikyamahasāṃ rāśirunmukhatāṃ gataḥ .. 15 ..
bursting through the earth and turned upward? (15)
1.2.10.33
kiṃ vā kalpāṃtasulabhaprādurbhāvāḥ prabhākarāḥ ..
Or have the suns, whose appearance is easy at the end of an aeon,
1.2.10.34
dvādaśāpi nabhobhūmyormadhye yugapadutthitāḥ .. 16 ..
all twelve risen simultaneously between heaven and earth? (16)
1.2.10.35
āhosvinmegha saṃgharṣādvitatā vyomamadhyataḥ..
Or [is it lightning bolts] spread from the midst of the sky by the friction of clouds,
1.2.10.36
anyonyaṃ militāḥ kṣiprā nipataṃtyavanītale .. 17 ..
gathered together and falling swiftly onto the surface of the earth? (17)
1.2.10.37
pratighnanneṣa tejobhirakṣṇoḥ śaktimanukṣaṇam ..
Constantly overpowering the power of the eyes with its rays,
1.2.10.38
svanirviśeṣitāśeṣabhūtajālaḥ pravarddhate .. 18 ..
it expands, rendering the entire host of beings indistinguishable from itself. (18)
1.2.10.39
eṣa uddīpyamāno'pi saṃtāpāya na kalpate ..
Though blazing fiercely, it does not cause torment;
1.2.10.40
nedīyāṃsyapi bhūtāni na nirdahati vahnivat .. 19 ..
it does not burn even nearby beings as fire would. (19)
1.2.10.41
etasya kāṃtisaṃkrāṃtyā jagadeva na kevalam ..
Through the transmission of its luster, not only has the world,
1.2.10.42
madīyamapi śoṇatvamanuprāptamaho vapuḥ .. 1.3.2.10.20 ..
but even my own body, alas, acquired a crimson hue! (20)
1.2.10.43
kasmādeṣa samutpannaḥ kiṃ mūlaḥ kimupādhikaḥ ..
From where did it arise? What is its root? What are its conditions?
1.2.10.44
kutastyaḥ kimupādānaḥ kayā bhaktyā prakāśate .. 21 ..
From where does it come? What is its material cause? Through what devotion does it shine forth? (21)
1.2.10.45
kiyānavadhiretasya viṣvaktiryagadhordhvataḥ ..
How far is its limit around, across, below, and above?
1.2.10.46
avagāḍhaśca pātālaṃ kiyanmātramasāviti .. 22 ..
And to what extent has it penetrated Pātāla?” (22)
1.2.10.47
tadetadakhilaṃ jñātuṃ manaḥ paryutsukaṃ muhuḥ ..
“The mind, constantly eager to know all of this,
1.2.10.48
icchatyutpatituṃ vyoma praveṣṭuṃ ca rasātalam .. 23 ..
desires to fly up into the sky and to enter Rasātala.” (23)
1.2.10.49
iti ciṃtābharākrāṃtau tejaḥstaṃbhāvalokanāt ..
Thus overcome by a burden of anxiety at the sight of the pillar of fire,
1.2.10.50
ubhāvapyavakulitau vaikuṇṭhaparameṣṭhinau .. 24 ..
both of them, Vaikuṇṭha [Viṣṇu] and Parameṣṭhin [Brahmā], were perplexed. (24)
1.2.10.51
abhāṣata ca goviṃdaḥ sutarāmeva garvitam ..
And Govinda, looking upon Hiraṇyagarbha [Brahmā],
1.2.10.52
hiraṇyagarbhamālokya smayamānamukhāṃbujaḥ .. 25 ..
who was exceedingly proud, spoke with a smiling lotus-face: (25)
1.2.10.53
.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:
1.2.10.54
ayamevāvayorbrahmannanyonyotkarṣakāṃkṣiṇoḥ ..
“O Brahmā, for the two of us who desire superiority over each other,
1.2.10.55
satyameva parīkṣāyai nikaṣaḥ samupasthitaḥ .. 26 ..
this very touchstone has presented itself for a true test. (26)
1.2.10.56
amuṣya tejasāṃ rāśeraparicchedyasaṃpadaḥ ..
Of this mass of radiance, whose power is immeasurable,
1.2.10.57
ādyaṃtau jñātumekena na śakyaṃ dhruvamāvayoḥ .. 27 ..
it is certainly impossible for either of us alone to know the beginning and the end. (27)
1.2.10.58
yaḥ paśyenmūlamagraṃ vā tejasosya svayaṃbhuvaḥ ..
Whoever can see the base or the tip of this self-manifest radiance,
1.2.10.59
sa eva nāvabhyadhiko jagatāṃ nāthako'pi saḥ .. 28 ..
he alone will be superior to the other, and he shall be the lord of the worlds.” (28)
1.2.10.60
.. naṃdikeśvara uvāca .. ..
Nandikeśvara said:
1.2.10.61
ityubhāvapi viniścitāśayau mūlamagramapi tasya vīkṣitum ..
With their minds thus resolved to see the base and the tip
1.2.10.62
tejasotimahato babhūvatuḥ spardhayā viracitodyamau mithaḥ .. 29 ..
of that immense radiance, the two of them made an effort in mutual rivalry. (29)
1.2.10.63
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe'ruṇācalamāhātmya uttarārdhe brahmaviṣṇvormadhye tejomayaliṃgaprādurbhāvavarṇanaṃnāma daśamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 10 ..
Thus ends the tenth chapter, titled “The Description of the Manifestation of the Liṅga of Light between Brahmā and Viṣṇu,” in the second half of the Aruṇācalamāhātmya, in the first Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, in the great Skandapurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses. (10)
