1.2.13.1
..naṃdikeśvara uvāca .. ..
Nandikeśvara said:
1.2.13.2
ketakībarhamapyenaṃ vihasya punarabravīt ..
Laughing, the ketakī petal spoke to him again:
1.2.13.3
.. ketakyuvāca .. ..
The ketakī said:
1.2.13.4
api mūḍha na kiṃcittvaṃ vetsi kastvaṃ kuto na tat .. 1 ..
"Are you foolish, knowing nothing, [not even] who you are or whence?
1.2.13.5
īdṛśyaḥ parito lagnā yasminbrahmāṃḍakoṭayaḥ ..
In him billions of cosmic eggs cling all around like this;
1.2.13.6
tasya pramāṇametāvaditi ko vedituṃ kṣamaḥ ..2..
who is capable of knowing, 'such is his measure'?
1.2.13.7
caturyugāyutairyātaṃ tato nipatato mama..
Ten thousand four-age cycles have passed for me falling from there,
1.2.13.8
idānīmapi nāproti tanmadhyaṃ kila bhūtalam ..3..
and even now, indeed, the middle of it has not reached the surface of the earth."
1.2.13.9
iti bruvāṇamenaṃ ca namaskṛtya sarojabhūḥ..
Bowing to this [petal] as it spoke thus, the lotus-born [Brahmā],
1.2.13.10
hitvā nijamahaṃkāramabhāṣata kṛtāṃjaliḥ..4..
abandoning his own pride, spoke with folded hands.
1.2.13.11
brahmovāca..
Brahmā said:
1.2.13.12
mahātmansatyamevāsmi mūḍho'haṃ ketakacchada..
"O great-souled one, true it is indeed: I am a fool, O ketaka petal!
1.2.13.13
brahmaṇā hi mayā sparddhā viṣṇunā saha nirmitā.. 5..
For I, Brahmā, instituted a rivalry with Viṣṇu.
1.2.13.14
dvābhyāmapīdamāvābhyāṃ vismṛtaṃ śivavaibhavam..
By both of us, the majesty of Śiva was forgotten,
1.2.13.15
yannau mahānabhūdgarvassargasaṃtrāṇamātrataḥ.. 6..
since we felt great pride merely from creating and protecting.
1.2.13.16
hrepaṇī saṃkathā tāvadāstāmadyāpyahaṃ yataḥ ..
Let that humiliating conversation be set aside for now, because even today
1.2.13.17
sparddhayā na vimukto'smi baddhayā garuḍadhvaje .. 7 ..
I am not freed from the rivalry entered into with [Viṣṇu] whose banner is Garuḍa.
1.2.13.18
sakhyaṃ sāptapadīnaṃ hi kathyate tadbhavānmayi .. 8 ..
Friendship is indeed said to arise from taking seven steps together; therefore,
1.2.13.19
asaṃstutadhiyaṃ hitvā kartumarhasyanugraham ..
abandoning the notion that I am a stranger, you ought to show me grace.
1.2.13.20
ahaṃ viṣṇuśca mohāṃdhau tejaḥstaṃbhasya vīkṣaṇāt .. 9 ..
Viṣṇu and I, blinded by delusion at the sight of the pillar of fire,
1.2.13.21
haṃsakolākṛtī dadhvo mithaḥ sāmyaṃ vyapohitum ..
assumed the forms of a swan and a boar to dispel mutual equality.
1.2.13.22
mūlaṃ didṛkṣuḥ sa daśāṃ kīdṛśīṃ yātavāniti .. 1.3.2.13.10 ..
Wishing to see the base, into what condition he has fallen
1.2.13.23
na jāne mama cāsyāgraṃ didṛkṣorīdṛkṣī daśā ..
I do not know; and such is the condition of me, who wished to see its tip:
1.2.13.24
gatamuḍḍīyamānasya me sahasreṇa hāyaneḥ .. .. 11 ..
a thousand years have passed while I flew up;
1.2.13.25
jātaśramo'smi nitarāṃ viyujya iva cāsubhiḥ ..
I have become utterly exhausted and as if separated from life.
1.2.13.26
diṣṭyādya bhadra labdhastvaṃ mayā''laṃbovasīdatām.. 12 ..
By good fortune today, noble one, you have been found by me as a support for the sinking.
1.2.13.27
tanme kuruṣva mitrasya saphalāṃ yācanāmimām ..
Therefore make fruitful this request of mine, your friend:
1.2.13.28
sakhāhaṃ sahasaṃjalpādasmi dāsonuṣaṃjanāt .. 13 ..
I am a friend from talking together; I am a servant from being attached [to you].
1.2.13.29
tattvayā karaṇīyaivaṃ prārthanaiṣā kṛtāṃjaliḥ ..
Therefore this plea is made by me with folded hands:
1.2.13.30
yadi paśyati mūlaṃ sa jito'hamamunā tadā .. 14 ..
if he sees the base, then I am defeated by him;
1.2.13.31
yadvā na paśyati tadāpyasmi sāmyamupeyivān ..
or if he does not see it, then too I will have attained equality [with him].
1.2.13.32
idaṃ dvayamapi prāyo mamātihrepaṇaṃ sakhe .. 15 ..
Both of these outcomes, my friend, are exceedingly humiliating to me.
1.2.13.33
tvayaiva parihāryatvamidānīṃ samupāgatam ..
The role of preventing this has now fallen upon you alone.
1.2.13.34
anṛtāmabhibhāṣa tvamucitāṃ ca suhṛtkṛte .. 16 ..
Speak an untruth, which is appropriate for the sake of a friend!
1.2.13.35
giramekāmimāmagre cakrapāṇerudīraya ..
Utter this single speech in the presence of [Viṣṇu] holding the discus:
1.2.13.36
eṣa haṃsākṛtirbrahmā tejaḥstaṃbhasvarūpiṇaḥ .. 17 ..
'This Brahmā, in the form of a swan, has seen the extremely high summit
1.2.13.37
atyuccaṃ dṛṣṭavānagramatra sākṣye sthito'smyaham ..
of him whose form is the pillar of fire; in this matter I stand as witness.
1.2.13.38
tenāpi tejaḥstambhatvameyuṣā candramaulinā .. 18 ..
Even by the moon-crested [Śiva], who has become the pillar of fire,
1.2.13.39
saṃbhāvitoyaṃ sutarāṃ pitreva hi pitāmahaḥ ..
he was highly honored, as a grandfather [is honored] by a father.
1.2.13.40
ato'yamevābhyadhiko bhavato viṣṭaraśravāḥ .. 19 ..
Therefore, this one alone is superior to you, O Viṣṇu!'
1.2.13.41
ityuktvā mama sāhāyyaṃ sumahatkriyatāṃ tvayā .. 1.3.2.13.20 ..
Having said this, let great assistance be rendered to me by you."
1.2.13.42
.. naṃdikeśvara uvāca .. ..
Nandikeśvara said:
1.2.13.43
evaṃ bhūyaḥ prārthito'yaṃ vidhātrā dākṣiṇyārdraḥ ketakībarhakopi ..
Thus repeatedly enticed by the Creator, that ketakī petal, softened by courtesy,
1.2.13.44
tejaḥstaṃbhābhyarṇabhāje tathaiva prāhāśeṣaṃ viṣṇave brahmavākyam .. 21 ..
spoke the whole message of Brahmā exactly so to Viṣṇu, who stood near the pillar of fire.
1.2.13.45
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe'ruṇācalamāhātmya uttarārdhe brahmaṇā'satyasākṣyārthaṃ ketakacchadaprāthanāvarṇanaṃnāma trayodaśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 13 .. .. cha ..
Thus ends the thirteenth chapter, entitled 'The Description of the Solicitation of the Ketaka Petal for False Witness by Brahmā', in the latter half of the Aruṇācalamāhātmya in the first [part], the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
