Streams and rivers flowed, terrifying to the faint-hearted, / unfathomable with blood for their waters; crossing them, brahmarākṣasas / crossed over with other spirits, ghosts, pramathas, and rākṣasas.
1.3.11.75
śākinīḍākinīsaṃghā yakṣiṇyo'tha sahasraśaḥ..
nānākeliṣu saṃyuktāḥ parasparamudānvitāḥ.. 13.75 ..
Hosts of śākinīs and ḍākinīs, and yakṣiṇīs by the thousands, / engaged in various sports, filled with mutual delight.
1.3.11.76
evaṃ saṃkrīḍamānāste bhūtapramatharākṣasāḥ..
raṇe tasminmahāraudre devāsurasamāgame.. 13.76 ..
As those spirits, pramathas, and rākṣasas were sporting thus / in that dreadfully fierce battle, in the clash of gods and Asuras,

jaghāna sa baliṃ yatnāddaityeṃdraṃ parameṇa hi.. 13.78 ..
The swift-striding Mahendra dodged that spear; / he then forcefully struck Bali, the king of the Daityas, with his supreme [weapon].
1.3.11.79
vajreṇa śitadhāreṇa bāhuṃ ciccheda vikramī..
gātāsurapatadbhūmau vimānātsūryasaṃnnibhāt.. 13.79 ..
With his sharp-edged vajra the valorous one severed his arm; / lifeless, [Bali] fell to the ground from his sun-like aerial chariot.
1.3.11.80
patitaṃ ca baliṃ dṛṣṭvā vṛṣaparvā rūpānvitaḥ..
vavarṣa śaradhārābhiḥ payoda iva parvatam.. 13.80 ..
Seeing Bali fallen, Vṛṣaparvan, filled with anger, / rained showers of arrows [upon Indra], as a rain-cloud [showers] a mountain.
1.3.11.81
maheṃdraṃ sagajaṃ caiva sahamānaṃ śitāñcharān..
tadā yuddhamabhūdvoraṃ mahendravṛṣaparvaṇoḥ.. 13.81 ..
Mahendra along with his elephant, enduring the sharp arrows— / then a dreadful battle took place between Mahendra and Vṛṣaparvan.
1.3.11.82
nipātya vṛṣaparvāṇamiṃdraḥ parabalārdanaḥ.. 13.82 ..
Having struck down Vṛṣaparvan, Indra, the crusher of enemy forces, [fought on].
1.3.11.83
tato vajreṇa mahatā dānavānavadhīdraṇe..
śirasi ccheditāḥ kecitkecitkaṃdharato hatāḥ.. 13.83 ..
Then with his great thunderbolt he slew the Dānavas in battle; / some were decapitated at the head, and some were struck down by the neck.
1.3.11.84
vihvalāśca kṛtāḥ kecidiṃdreṇa kupitena ca..
tathā yamena nihatā vāyunā varuṇena ca.. 13.84 ..
Some were thrown into bewilderment by the enraged Indra; / likewise, [others] were slain by Yama, by Vāyu, and by Varuṇa.
1.3.11.85
kubereṇa hatāścānye nairṛtena tathā pare..
agninā nihatāḥ kecidīśenaiva vidāritāḥ.. 13.85 ..
Others were killed by Kubera, and others likewise by Nairṛta; / some were slain by Agni, and [others] torn apart by Īśa himself.
1.3.11.86
evaṃ tadā tairnihatā balīyaso mahāsurā vikramaśāninaśca..
suraistu sarvaiḥ saha lokapālaiḥ śivaprasādā bhihatāstadānīm.. 13.86 ..
Thus the very mighty and valiant great Asuras were slain by them then; / struck down at that time by all the gods together with the world-protectors, by the grace of Śiva.
1.3.11.87
tato mahādaityavaro durātmā sa kalānemiḥ paramāstrayuktaḥ..
yayau tadānīṃ surasattamāṃstānhaṃtuṃ sadā krūramatiḥ sa ekaḥ.. 13.87 ..
Then that best of great Daityas, the evil-minded Kālanemi, equipped with supreme weapons, / that single one of ever-cruel mind, went forth at that time to slay those foremost of the gods.
1.3.11.88
siṃhārūḍho daṃśitaśca triśulena hi saṃyutaḥ..
daityānāmarbudenaiva siṃhārūḍhena saṃvṛtaḥ.. 13.88 ..
Mounted on a lion, clad in armor, and equipped with a trident, / surrounded by a hundred million Daityas mounted on lions.
1.3.11.89
te siṃhā daṃśitāḥ sarve mahābalaparākramāḥ..
teṣu siṃheṣu cārūḍhā mahādaityāśca tatsamāḥ.. 13.89 ..
All those lions were armored, possessing great strength and prowess; / and mounted upon those lions were great Daityas equal to them.
1.3.11.90
āyāṃtīṃ daityasenāṃ tāṃ sarvāṃ siṃhavibhūṣitām..
kālanemiyutāṃ dṛṣṭvā devā iṃdrapurogamāḥ..
bhayamājagmuratulaṃ tadā dhyānaparā bhavan.. 13.90 ..
Seeing that entire army of Daityas approaching, adorned with lions / and joined with Kālanemi, the gods, led by Indra, / were overcome with incomparable fear, and then became absorbed in meditation:
1.3.11.91
kiṃ kurmo'dya vayaṃ sarve kathaṃ jeṣyāma cādbhutam..
etādṛśamasaṃkhyākamanīkaṃ siṃhasaṃvṛtam.. 13.91 ..
"What shall all of us do today? How shall we conquer this wondrous, / innumerable army surrounded by lions?"
1.3.11.92
evaṃ viciṃtyamānāste hyāgatastatra nāradaḥ..
nāradena ca tatsarvaṃ purāvṛttaṃ mahattaram.. 13.92 ..
While they were thus pondering, Nārada arrived there; / and by Nārada the entire great past history was related.
1.3.11.93
kathitaṃ ca maheṃdrāya kālanemestapobalam..
ajeyatvaṃ ca saṃgrāme varadānabalena tu.. 13.93 ..
And the power of Kālanemi's austerity was told to Mahendra, / as well as his invincibility in battle through the power of a boon granted [to him]:
1.3.11.94
viṣṇuṃ vinā vayaṃ devā aśaktā raṇamaṃḍale..
jetuṃ ca sa tato viṣṇuḥ smaryatāṃ parameśvaraḥ..
tamālanīlo varadaḥ sarvairvijayakāṃkṣibhiḥ.. 13.94 ..
"Without Viṣṇu, O gods, we are unable to conquer him on the battlefield; / therefore let Viṣṇu, the supreme Lord, dark as a tamāla tree and the granter of boons, / be remembered by all who desire victory."
1.3.11.95
nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā tadā devāstvarānvitāḥ..
dhyānena ca mahāviṣṇuṃ tataḥ parabalārddanam..
smaraṃtaḥ paramātmānamidamūcuśca taṃ vibhum.. 13.95 ..
Hearing Nārada's words, the gods, filled with haste, / remembering through meditation Mahāviṣṇu, the crusher of the enemy's army, / the supreme Self, spoke thus to that all-pervading Lord:
1.3.11.96
.. devā ūcuḥ..
namastubhyaṃ bhagavate namaste viśvamaṃgalam..
śrīnivāsa namastubhyaṃ śrīpate te namonamaḥ.. 13.96 ..
The gods said: / "Obeisance to you, the Blessed One! Obeisance to you, the auspiciousness of the universe! / O Sriniketa, obeisance to you! O Lord of Śrī, obeisance, obeisance to you!
1.3.11.97
adyāsmānbhayabhītāṃstvaṃ kālanemibhayārditān..
trātumarhasi daityācca devānāmabhayaprada.. 13.97 ..
Today, you should protect us who are terrified of fear, tormented by fear of Kālanemi, / from the Daitya, O granter of fearlessness to the gods!"
1.3.11.98
evaṃ dhyātaḥ saṃsmṛtaśca prādurbhūto haristadā..
nīlo garuḍamāruhya jagatāmabhayapradaḥ.. 13.98 ..
Thus meditated upon and remembered, Hari then manifested, / dark-hued, mounted upon Garuḍa, the granter of fearlessness to the worlds.
1.3.11.99
cakrapāṇistadāyāto devānāṃ vijayāya ca..
gaganasthaṃ mahāviṣṇuṃ garuḍopari saṃsthitam..
śrīvāsamenaṃ durddharṣaṃ yoddhukāmaṃ dadarśire.. 13.99 ..
Holding the discus in hand, he arrived then for the victory of the gods; / they beheld Mahāviṣṇu standing in the sky, seated upon Garuḍa, / the unassailable abode of Śrī, eager to fight.
1.3.11.100
tathā dṛṣṭvā kālanemistadānīṃ prahasyamāno'tiruṣā balānvitaḥ..
kastvaṃ mahābhāga vareṇyarūpaḥ śyāmo yuvā vāraṇamattavikramaḥ..
kare gṛhītaṃ niśitaṃ mahāprabhaṃ cakraṃ ca kasmātkathayasva me prabho.. 13.100 ..
Seeing him thus, Kālanemi, laughing derisively with extreme wrath, endowed with strength, [said]: / "Who are you, O fortunate one of choice form, dark, youthful, with the prowess of a rutting elephant? / Why is a sharp discus of great splendor held in your hand? Tell me, O lord!"
1.3.11.101
..śrībhagavānuvāca..
yuddhārthamiha cāyāto devānāṃ kāryasiddhaye..
tvaṃ sthiro bhava re maṃda dahāmyadya na saṃśayaḥ.. 13.101 ..
The Blessed Lord said: / "I have come here for battle, to accomplish the purpose of the gods. / Stand firm, O dullard! I will burn you today without a doubt."
1.3.11.102
śrutvā bhagavato vākyaṃ kālanemiḥ pratāpavān..
uvāca ruṣito bhūtvā bhagavaṃtamadhokṣajam.. 13.102 ..
Hearing the words of the Blessed Lord, the powerful Kālanemi, / becoming furious, spoke to the Blessed Lord Adhokṣaja:
1.3.11.103
mūlabhūto hi devānāṃ bhagavānyuddhadurmadaḥ..
yuddhaṃ kuru mayā sārddhaṃ yadi śūro'si saṃprati.. 13.103 ..
"You are indeed the root of the gods, O Blessed One, arrogant in battle; / fight with me now if you are a hero!"
1.3.11.104
prahasya bhagavānviṣṇuruvācedaṃ mahāprabhaḥ..
gaganastho bhava tvaṃ hi mahīstho'haṃ bhavāmi vai.. 13.104 ..
Laughing, the Blessed Lord Viṣṇu of great splendor said this: / "Be in the sky, for I shall indeed be on the earth.
1.3.11.105
apraśastaṃ ca viṣamaṃ yuddhaṃ caiva yathā bhavet..
tathā kuru mahābāho gagano vā mahītale.. 13.105 ..
Act in such a way, O mighty-armed one, whether in the sky or on the earth's surface, / so that the battle does not become unpraiseworthy and unequal."
1.3.11.106
tatheti matvā hi mahānubhāvo daityaiḥ sameto'rbudasaṃkhyakaiśca..
siṃhoparisthaiśca mahānubhāvairmahābalaiḥ krūrataraistadānīm.. 13.106 ..
Agreeing to this, that mighty one, accompanied by Daityas numbering a hundred million, / mounted on lions, noble, exceedingly powerful and fierce at that time,
1.3.11.107
gaganamatha jagāhe maṃdamaṃdaṃ mahātmā hyasuragaṇasameto viśvarūpaṃ jighāṃsuḥ..
triśikhamaparamugraṃ gṛhya saṃdeśaceṣṭādaśanavikṛtavaktro yoddhukāmo hariṃ saḥ.. 13.107 ..
the great-souled one, accompanied by the host of Asuras, slowly entered the sky, wishing to slay the Universal-Formed One; / holding an extremely fierce trident, his face deformed with teeth [bared] in menacing action, he desired to fight Hari.
1.3.11.107_1
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe samudramaṃthanākhyāne devāsurasaṃgrāmavarṇanaṃnāma trayodaśo'dhyāyaḥ.. 13 ..
Thus ends the thirteenth chapter, named 'Description of the Battle between the Gods and the Asuras', in the narrative of the Churning of the Ocean, in the first [part], the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, of the Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
