Thinking “So be it,” that king Nahuṣa, infatuated by desire, / reflected with superior intellect: “What is praised as not to be ridden?”
1.3.13.82
sa buddhyā ca ciraṃ smṛtvā brāhmaṇāścatapasvinaḥ..
avāhyāśca bhavaṃtyasmādātmānaṃ vāhayāmyaham.. 15.82 ..
Having reflected long with his intellect: “Brāhmaṇas and ascetics / are not to be ridden; therefore, I shall have myself carried [by them]—
1.3.13.83
dvābhyāṃ ca tasyāḥ prāptyarthamiti me hṛdi vartate..
śibikāṃ ca dadau tābhyāṃ dvijābhyāṃ kāmamohitaḥ.. 15.83 ..
by two [of them] in order to obtain her; this is what is in my heart.” / Infatuated by desire, he gave a palanquin to two twice-borns.
1.3.13.84
upaviśya tadā tasyāṃ śivabikāyāṃ samāhitaḥ..
sarpasarpeti vacanānnodayāmāsa tau tadā.. 15.84 ..
Sitting then attentively in that palanquin, / he urged them on with the words: “Move, move!”
1.3.13.85
agastyaḥ śibikāvāhī tataḥ kruddho'śapannṛpam..
viprāṇāmavamaṃtā tvamunmatto'jagaro bhava.. 15.85 ..
Then Agastya, bearer of the palanquin, became enraged and cursed the king: / “You scorner of brāhmaṇas! Become an intoxicated python!”
1.3.13.86
śāpoktimātrato rājā patito brāhmaṇasya hi..
tatraivājagaro bhūtvā vipraśāpo duratyayaḥ.. 15.86 ..
From the mere utterance of the curse, the king fell before the brāhmaṇa, / turning into a python right there; a brāhmaṇa’s curse is insurmountable.
1.3.13.87
yathā hi nahuṣo jātastathā sarve'pi tādṛśāḥ..
viprāṇāmavamānena patinti niraye'śucau.. 15.87 ..
Just as Nahuṣa became, so all who are like him / fall into an impure hell through disrespect toward brāhmaṇas.
1.3.13.88
tasmāsarvaprayatnena padaṃ prāpya vicakṣaṇaiḥ..
apramattairnarairbhāvyamihāmutra ca labdhaye.. 15.88 ..
Therefore, having attained a station, wise and heedful / men should make every effort to attain [good] here and in the hereafter.
1.3.13.89
tathaiva nahuṣaḥ sarppo jātoraṇye mahābhaye..
evaṃ caivābhavattatra devaloke hyarājakam.. 15.89 ..
Just so, Nahuṣa became a serpent in a very dreadful forest. / And thus there was kinglessness in the realm of the gods.
1.3.13.90
tathaiva te surāḥ sarve vismayāviṣṭacetasaḥ..
aho bata mahatkaṣṭaṃ prāptaṃ rājñā hyanena vai.. 15.90 ..
Likewise, all those gods, their minds overcome with astonishment, [said]: / “Alas, what great misery has indeed been attained by this king!
1.3.13.91
na martya loko na svargo jāto hyasya durātmanaḥ..
satāmavajñayā sadyaḥ sukṛtaṃ dagdhameva hi.. 15.91 ..
Neither the mortal world nor heaven remains for this wicked soul; / through disrespect of the virtuous, his good deeds are instantly burnt up!”
1.3.13.92
yājñiko hyaparo loke kathyatāṃ ca mahāmune..
tadovāca mahātejā nārado munisattamaḥ.. 15.92 ..
“Let another performer of sacrifices in the world be mentioned, O great sage!” / Then the glorious Nārada, the best of sages, said:
1.3.13.93
yayātiṃ ca mahābhāgā ānayadhvaṃ tvarānvitāḥ..
devadūtāstu vai tūrṇaṃ yayātiṃ drutamānayan.. 15.93 ..
“Bring Yayāti with haste, O fortunate ones!” / Then the divine messengers swiftly brought Yayāti in haste.
1.3.13.94
vimānamāruhya tadā mahātmā yayau divaṃ devadūtaiḥ sametaḥ..
puraskṛto devavaraistadānīṃ tathoragairyakṣagaṃdharvasiddhaiḥ.. 15.94 ..
Mounting the aerial chariot, the great-souled one then went to heaven accompanied by the divine messengers, / honoured then by the foremost gods, and likewise by serpents, yakṣas, gandharvas, and siddhas.
1.3.13.95
āyātaḥ so'marāvatyāṃ tridaśairabhitoṣitaḥ..
iṃdrāsane copaviṣṭo babhāṣe ca sa satvaram.. 15.95 ..
Arriving at Amarāvatī, he was gratified by the thirty [gods]; / and seated upon Indra’s throne, he spoke promptly.
1.3.13.96
nāradenaivamuktastu tvaṃ rājā yājñiko hyasi..
satāmavajñayā prāpto nahuṣo daṃdaśūkatām.. 15.96 ..
Addressed thus by Nārada: “You are indeed a sacrifice-performing king; / Nahuṣa met the condition of a serpent through disrespect of the virtuous.
1.3.13.97
ye prāpnuvaṃti dharmiṣṭhā daivena paramaṃ padam..
prāktanenaiva mūḍhāste na paśyaṃti śubhāśubham.. 15.97 ..
Those righteous ones who attain the supreme station through past destiny, / deluded, do not perceive the auspicious and the inauspicious;
1.3.13.98
pataṃti narake ghore stabdhā vai nātra saṃśayaḥ.. 15.98 ..
arrogant, they fall into a dreadful hell; of this there is no doubt.”
1.3.13.99
..yayātiruvāca..
yaiḥ kṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ teṣāṃ vighnaḥ prajāyate..
alpakatvena devarṣe viddhi sarvaṃ paraṃ mama.. 15.99 ..
Yayāti said: / “An obstacle arises for those by whom merit is done / in small measure, O divine seer; know all of mine to be supreme!
1.3.13.100
mahādānāni dattāni annadānayutāni ca..
godānāni bahūnyeva bhūmidānayutāni ca.. 15.100 ..
Great gifts have been given, along with gifts of food, / many gifts of cows, along with gifts of land.
1.3.13.101
tathaiva sarvāṇyapi cottamāni dānāni coktāni manīṣibhiryadā..
etāni sarvāṇi mayā tadaiva dattāni kāle ca mahāvidhānataḥ.. 15.101 ..
Likewise, all the highest gifts that have been proclaimed by the wise— / all of these were given by me at the right time, according to the great rites.”
1.3.13.102
yajñairiṣṭaṃ vājapeyātirātrairjyotiṣṭomai rājasūyādibhiśca..
śāstraproktairaśvamedhādibhiśca yūpaireṣālaṃkṛtā bhūḥ samaṃtāt.. 15.102 ..
Sacrifices were offered by me: Vājapeyas, Atirātras, Jyotiṣṭomas, and Rājasūyas, / and with the horse sacrifices prescribed by sacred lore, this earth was adorned on all sides with sacrificial posts. (15.102)
1.3.13.103
devadevo jagannātha iṣṭo yajñairanekaśaḥ..
gālavāya pure dattā kanyā tveṣā ca mādhavī.. 15.103 ..
The god of gods, the lord of the universe, was worshiped through manifold sacrifices. / In ancient times, this maiden Mādhavī was given to Gālava, (15.103)
1.3.13.104
patnītvena caturbhyaśca dattāḥ kanyā mune tadā..
gālavasya gurorarthe viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ.. 15.104 ..
and then she was given to four [kings] as their wife, O sage, / for the sake of Gālava's preceptor, the wise Viśvāmitra. (15.104)
1.3.13.105
evaṃ bhūtānyanekāni sukṛtāni mayā purā..
mahāṃti ca bahūnyeva tāni vaktuṃ na pāryate.. 15.105 ..
Many such great and virtuous deeds were done by me in the past; / indeed, they are so numerous that it is impossible to recount them. (15.105)
1.3.13.106
bhūyaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ sarvadevaiḥ sa rājā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ guptameva yathārtham..
vijñātumicchāma yathārthatopi sarve vayaṃ śrotukāmā yayāte.. 15.106 ..
The king was questioned again by all the gods: 'Whatever was done secretly, in truth, / we wish to know accurately; we all desire to hear, O Yayāti.' (15.106)
1.3.13.107
vaco niśamya devānāṃ yayātiramitadyutiḥ..
kathayāmāsa tatsarvaṃ puṇyaśeṣaṃ yathārthataḥ.. 15.107 ..
Hearing the words of the gods, Yayāti of boundless splendor / recounted all the remainder of his merit in its true measure. (15.107)
1.3.13.108
kathitaṃ sarvametacca niḥśeṣaṃ vyāsavattadā..
svapuṇyakathanenaiva yayātirapatadbhuvi.. 15.108 ..
When all this had been told completely, just as Vyāsa [tells it], / Yayāti fell to the earth solely through reciting his own merits. (15.108)
1.3.13.109
tatkṣaṇādeva sarveṣāṃ surāṇāṃ tatra paśyatām..
evameva tathā jātamarājakamataṃdritam.. 15.109 ..
At that very moment, before the eyes of all the gods watching there, / the realm became completely kingless, without any protector. (15.109)
1.3.13.110
anyo na dṛśyate loke yājñiko yo hi tatra vai..
śakrāsane'bhiṣe kāryaṃ śrūyatāṃ hi dvijottamāḥ.. 15.110 ..
'No other sacrificer is seen in the world who can be consecrated on the throne of Indra'— / listen indeed to this, O best of brahmins! (15.110)
1.3.13.111

vidyādharāḥ suragaṇāpsarasāṃ gaṇāśca ciṃtāparāḥ samabhavanmanujāstathaiva.. 15.111 ..
All the gods, the seers, the great serpent kings, gandharvas, yakṣas, birds, cāraṇas, and kiṃnaras, / the vidyādharas, the hosts of gods, and the troops of apsarases, as well as mortal men, became filled with anxiety. (15.111)
