anekaratnasaṃvītaṃ prāsādaiśca svalaṃ kṛtam..
tadaṃgaṇamanuprāpya upaviśyāha havyavāṭ.. 27.37 ..
surrounded by many jewels and well adorned with mansions. / Having reached its courtyard and sat down, the fire spoke:

nivārito girijayā vadhāttasmācchivaḥ svayam..
bhikṣāṃ tasmai dadau vācā agnaye jātavedase.. 27.40 ..
Lifting his trident, Rudra then became terrifying; / restrained from slaying him by the Mountain-born Daughter, Śiva himself / gave alms in word to Agni, the knower of beings.
1.3.25.41
pāṇau bhikṣāṃ gṛhītvātha pratyakṣaṃ tena cāgninā..
bhikṣitā kupitā taṃ vai śaśāpa girijā tataḥ.. 27.41 ..
Then, the alms having been received directly into his hand by that fire, / the Mountain-born Daughter, angered at his begging, then cursed him:
1.3.25.42
re bhikṣo bhavitā śāpātsarvabhakṣo mamāśu vai..
anena retasā sadyaḥ pīḍāṃ prāpsyasi sarvataḥ.. 27.42 ..
“O mendicant, by my curse you will quickly become an eater of everything; / by this semen you will immediately suffer torment on all sides!”

āgatyākathayatsarvaṃ tadretobhakṣaṇādikam..
sarve sagarbhā hyabhavannindrādyā devatāgaṇāḥ.. 27.44 ..
Arriving, he related everything—the consumption of that semen and the rest; / and all the hosts of gods, Indra and the rest, became pregnant.
1.3.25.45
agneryathā haviścaiva sarveṣāmupatiṣṭhati..
agnermukhodbhavenaiva retasā te sureśvarāḥ.. 27.45 ..
Just as the oblation of Agni reaches all of them, / through the semen arising from Agni's mouth, those lords of the gods,
1.3.25.46
sagarbhāhyabhavansarve ciṃtayā caprapīḍitāḥ..
viṣṇuṃ śaraṇamājagmurddevadeveśvaraṃ prabhum.. 27.46 ..
all became pregnant and were tormented with anxiety; / they sought refuge with Viṣṇu, the Lord, the ruler of the God of gods.

asurebhyaḥ paritrastā vayaṃ sarve divaukasaḥ.. 27.48 ..
We all desire to die, tormented by this semen; / we, all the gods of heaven, are terrified of the asuras.
1.3.25.49
śaraṇaṃ śaṃkaraṃ yātāḥ paritrātuṃ kṛtodvahāḥ..
yadā putro hi rudrasya bhaviṣyati tadā vayam..
sukhinaḥ syāma sarve nirbhayāśca triviṣṭape.. 27.49 ..
We went to Śaṃkara for refuge, eager to be saved; / [thinking] that when a son is born to Rudra, then we / will all be happy and fearless in heaven.
1.3.25.50
evaṃ viṣṭabhyamānānāṃ sarveṣāṃ bhayamāgatam..
anena retasā viṣṇo jīvituṃ śakyate katham.. 27.50 ..
To us thus obstructed, fear has come; / O Viṣṇu, how can one live with this semen?
1.3.25.51
trivargo hi yathā puṃsāṃ kṛto hi supariṣkṛtaḥ..
viparīto bhavatyeva vinā devena nānyathā.. 27.51 ..
Even if the threefold aim of life of men is thoroughly accomplished, / it indeed turns contrary without God, not otherwise.
1.3.25.52
tasmāttadvai balaṃ matvā sarveṣāmapi dehinām..
kāryākāryavyavasthāyāṃ sarve manyāmahe vayam.. 27.52 ..
Therefore, considering that to be the strength of all embodied beings, / we all reflect upon the determination of what should and should not be done.”
1.3.25.53
tathā niśamya devānāṃ pareśaḥ paridevanam..
uvāca prahasanvākyaṃ devānāṃ devatārihā.. 27.53 ..
Hearing that lamentation of the gods, the supreme Lord, / the slayer of the enemies of the gods, spoke these words to the gods with a smile:
1.3.25.54
stūyatāṃ vai mahādevo maheśaḥ kāryagauravāt.. 27.54 ..
“Let Mahādeva, Maheśa, be praised because of the gravity of the task!”
1.3.25.55
tatheti gatvā te sarve devā viṣṇupurogamāḥ..
tathā brahmādayaḥ sarva īḍire ṛṣayo haram.. 27.55 ..
Saying “So be it,” all those gods headed by Viṣṇu, / as well as Brahmā and the others, all the seers, praised Hara:
1.3.25.56
oṃnamo bhargāya devāya nīlakaṃṭhāya mīḍhuṣe..
trinetrāya trivedāya lokatritayadhāriṇe.. 27.56 ..
“Om, homage to the radiant god, to the blue-throated, the bountiful, / to the three-eyed, the three Vedas, the supporter of the three worlds;
1.3.25.57
trisvarāya trimātrāya trivedāya trimūrttaye..
trivargāya tridhāmāya tripadāya triśūline.. 27.57 ..
to the three tones, the three measures, the three Vedas, the three forms, / to the threefold aim, the threefold abode, the three paces, the bearer of the trident!

trāhitrāhi mahādeva retaso jagataḥ pate.. 27.58 ..
Save us, save us, O Mahādeva, Lord of the world, from the semen!”

brahmaṇā tu stuto yāvattāvaddevo vṛṣadhvajaḥ..
prādurbabhūva tatraiva surāṇāṃ kāryasiddhaye.. 27.59 ..
As soon as he was praised by Brahmā, the god whose banner is the bull / appeared right there for the accomplishment of the purpose of the gods.
1.3.25.60

saṃstūyamāno vividhairvacobhiḥ pratyagrūpaiḥ śrutisaṃmataiśca.. 27.60 ..
Then the sole friend of the universe was seen, well worshipped by the great-souled foremost gods, / being extolled with various fresh words consistent with the Vedas.
1.3.25.61
stuvatāṃ caiva devānāmuvāca parameśvaraḥ..
trāsaṃ kurvaṃtu mā sarve retasānena pīḍitāḥ.. 27.61 ..
And to the praising gods the Supreme Lord said: / “Let none of you, tormented by this semen, be afraid.
1.3.25.62
vamanaṃ vai bhavadbhiśca kāryamadyaiva bhoḥsurāḥ..
tatheti matvā te sarva iṃdrādyā devatāgaṇāḥ..
vemuḥ sarve tadā viprāstadretaḥ śaṃkarasya ca.. 27.62 ..
Vomiting must be done by you this very day, O gods!” / Thinking “So be it,” all those hosts of gods, Indra and the rest, / then vomited that semen of Śaṃkara, O brahmins.
1.3.25.63
aikapadyena tadreto mahāparvatasannibham..
taptacāmīkaraprakhyaṃ babhūva paramādbhutam.. 27.63 ..
All at once that semen, resembling a great mountain, / looking like molten gold, became a supreme wonder.
1.3.25.64
sarve ca sukhino jātā iṃdrādyā devatāgaṇāḥ..
vinā hyagniṃ ca te sarve parituṣṭāstadā'bhavan.. 27.64 ..
And all the hosts of gods, Indra and the rest, became happy; / except for Agni, they all were then fully satisfied.
1.3.25.65
tenāgnināpi coktastu śaṃkaro lokaśaṃkaraḥ..
kiṃ mayādya mahā deva kartavyaṃ devatāvara.. 27.65 ..
And by that fire too, Śaṃkara, the causer of welfare to the world, was addressed: / “What must be done by me today, O Mahādeva, O best of deities?
1.3.25.66
tadbrūhi me prabho'dya tvaṃ yenāhaṃ sarvadā sukhī..
bhaviṣyāmi ca yenāhaṃ devānāṃ havyavāhakaḥ.. 27.66 ..
Tell me that today, O Lord, whereby I may always be happy, / and whereby I may become the bearer of oblations for the gods.”
1.3.25.67
tadovāca śivaḥ sākṣāddevānāmiha śrṛṇvatām..
reto visṛjyatāṃ yonau tadāgniḥ prahasannavi.. 27.67 ..
Then Śiva spoke directly, while the gods were listening here: / “Let the semen be discharged into a womb.” Then Agni, laughing, [said] also:
1.3.25.68
uvāca śaṃkaraṃ devaṃ bhavattejo durāsadam..
idamulbaṇavattejo dhāryate prākṛtaiḥ katham.. 27.68 ..
he said to the god Śaṃkara: “Your fiery splendour is hard to approach. / How can this exceedingly terrible fiery splendour be borne by ordinary beings?”
1.3.25.69
tataḥ provāca bhagavānagniṃ prati maheśvaraḥ..
māsimāsi prataptānāṃ dehe tejo visṛjyatām.. 27.69 ..
Then the blessed Maheśvara said to Agni: / “Discharge that fiery splendour into the bodies of those [women] who are heated [by morning bathing] month after month.”
1.3.25.70
tatheti matvā vacanaṃ mahāprabhaḥ sa jātavedāḥ parameṇa varcasā..
samujjvalaṃstatra mahāprabhāvo brāhme muhūrtte hi sacopaviṣṭaḥ.. 27.70 ..
Thinking “So be it,” regarding that command, the greatly luminous Jātavedas, blazing with supreme splendour, / possessed of great power, sat down there during the brāhma-muhūrta.
1.3.25.71
tadā prātaḥ samutthāya prātaḥ snānaparāḥ striyaḥ..
yayuḥ sadā ṛṣīṇāṃ ca satyastā jātavedasam.. 27.71 ..
Then, having arisen in the morning, the wives of the seers, devoted to morning ablutions, / virtuous as they were, constantly went to Jātavedas.
1.3.25.72

viviśū romakūpeṣu tāsāṃ tatraiva satvaram.. 27.73 ..
Even though restrained by her, those Kṛttikās warmed themselves on their own. / As they were all warming themselves, the subtle particles of semen / swiftly entered their hair-pores right there.
1.3.25.74
nīretognistadā jāto viśrāṃtaḥ svayameva hi.. 27.74 ..
Then Agni was rendered devoid of semen and became calm on his own.

tatastā ṛṣibhāryā hi yayuḥ svabhavanaṃ prati..
ṛṣibhistu tadā śaptāḥ kṛttikāḥ khecarābhavan.. 27.75 ..
Then the wives of the seers went to their own dwellings. / But, cursed then by the seers, the Kṛttikās became sky-wanderers [as stars].
