aṣṭādaśapurāṇeṣu gīyate vai paraḥ śivaḥ..
tasmācchivasya māhātmyaṃ vaktuṃ ko'pi na pāryate.. 1.13 ..
Lomaśa said:
In the eighteen Purāṇas, Śiva alone is sung as supreme;
therefore no one is able to utter the māhātmya of Śiva.
1.3.35.14

he is a fool, a great sinner, a hater of Śiva, without a doubt.

yathā garaṃ bhakṣitaṃ ca yathā yajño vināśitaḥ..
dakṣasya ca tathā brūhi paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi naḥ.. 1.19 ..
The seers said:
Tell us how the poison was eaten and how the sacrifice was destroyed,
and that of Dakṣa, for our curiosity is great.
1.3.35.20
..sūta uvāca..
dākṣāyaṇī purā dattā śaṃkarāya mahātmane..
vacanādbrahmaṇo viprā dakṣeṇa parameṣṭhinaḥ.. 1.20 ..
Sūta said:
Formerly, O brahmins, Dākṣāyaṇī was given to the great-souled Śaṃkara
by Dakṣa, at the command of Brahmā the supreme lord.
1.3.35.21
ekadā hi sa dakṣo vai naimiṣāraṇyamāgataḥ..
yadṛcchāvaśamāpanna ṛṣibhiḥ paripūjitaḥ.. 1.21 ..
Once, indeed, that Dakṣa came to Naimiṣāraṇya,
having arrived by chance, and was worshipped by the seers,
1.3.35.22
stutibhiḥ praṇipātaiśca tathā sarvaiḥ surāsuraiḥ..
tatra sthito mahādevo nābhyutthānābhivādane..
cakārāsya tataḥ kruddho dakṣo vacanabravīt.. 1.22 ..
and by all the gods and asuras with praises and prostrations.
Standing there, Mahādeva did not rise up to greet him;
thereupon Dakṣa, enraged, spoke [these] words:
1.3.35.23
sarvatra sarve hi surāsurā bhṛśaṃ namaṃti māṃ vipravarāḥ samutsukāḥ..
kathaṃ hyasau durjanavanmahātmā bhūtādibhiḥ pretapiśācayuktaḥ..
śmaśānavāsī nirapatrapo hyayaṃ kathaṃ praṇāmaṃ na karoti me'dhunā.. 1.23 ..
"Everywhere all the gods and asuras, and best of brahmins, eagerly bow to me very much.
How does this great-souled one, like a wicked person accompanied by bhūtas, pretas, and piśācas,
a dweller in the cremation ground, devoid of shame—why does he not make an obeisance to me now?
1.3.35.24
pākhaṃḍino durjanāḥ pāpaśīlā vipraṃ dṛṣṭvā coddhatā unmadāśca..
vadhyāstyājyāḥ sadbhirevaṃvidhā hi tasmādenaṃ śāpituṃ codyato'smi.. 1.24 ..
Heretics, wicked people, sinful by nature, arrogant and maddened upon seeing a brahmin,
are fit to be slain, fit to be abandoned by the good, of such a kind; therefore I am ready to curse him."
1.3.35.25
ityevamuktvā sa mahātapāstadā ruṣānvito rudramidaṃ babhāṣe.. 1.25 ..
Having spoken thus, he of great austerity, filled with anger, then addressed Rudra in this way:
1.3.35.26
śrṛṇvaṃtvamī vipratamā idānīṃ vaco hi me kartumihārhathaitat..
rudro hyayaṃ yajñabāhyo vṛto me varṇātīto varṇaparo yataśca.. 1.26 ..
"Let these most excellent brahmins hear my word now, and you ought to carry this out here:
this Rudra is excluded by me from the sacrifice, since he is beyond caste and opposed to caste."
1.3.35.27
naṃdī niśamya tadvākyaṃ śailādo hi ruṣānvitaḥ..
abravīttvarito dakṣaṃ śāpadaṃ taṃ mahāprabham.. 1.27 ..
Hearing that statement, Nandī, the son of Śilāda, filled with anger,
said quickly to Dakṣa, that great lord who gave the curse:
1.3.35.28
..nandyuvāca..
yajñabāhyo hi me svāmī maheśo'yaṃ kṛtaḥ katham..
yasya smaraṇamātreṇa yajñāśca saphalā hyamī.. 1.28 ..
Nandī said:
How is this my master, Maheśa, made excluded from the sacrifice,
by the mere remembrance of whom these sacrifices become fruitful?
1.3.35.29
yajño dānaṃ tapaścaiva tīrthāni vividhāni ca..
yasya nāmnā pavitrāṇi soyaṃ śapto'dhunā katham.. 1.29 ..
Sacrifice, gift, austerity, and various sacred fords
are made holy by whose name—how is that one cursed now?
1.3.35.30
vṛthā te brahmacāpalyācchapto'yaṃ dakṣa durmate..
yenedaṃ pālitaṃ viśvaṃ sarveṇa ca mahātmanā..
śapto'yaṃ sa kathaṃ pāpa rudro'yaṃ brāhmaṇādhama.. 1.30 ..
In vain has he been cursed by you out of brahminical rashness, O foolish Dakṣa!
By whom this entire universe is protected, by Śarva, the great-souled one,
how has that one been cursed, O sinner, O Rudra, O lowest of brahmins?
1.3.35.31
evaṃ nirbhārtsitastena naṃdinā hi prajāpatiḥ..
naṃdinaṃ ca śaśāpātha dakṣo roṣasamanvitaḥ.. 1.31 ..
Rebuked thus by that Nandī, the lord of creatures,
Dakṣa, filled with anger, then cursed Nandī:
1.3.35.32
yūyaṃ sarve rudravarā vedabāhyāśca vai bhṛśam..
śaptāhi vedamārgaiśca tathā tyaktā maharṣibhiḥ.. 1.32 ..
"All of you, eminent followers of Rudra, are completely outside the Veda;
cursed by the Vedic paths and abandoned by the great seers,
1.3.35.33
pāṣaṃḍavādasaṃyuktāḥ śiṣṭa''cārabahiṣkṛtāḥ..
kapālinaḥ pānaratāstathā kālamukhā hyamī.. 1.33 ..
joined with heretical doctrines, excluded from standard conduct,
bearers of skulls, given to drinking, and Kālāmukhas are these!"
1.3.35.34
iti śaptāstadā tena dakṣeṇa śivakiṃkarāḥ..
tadā prakupito naṃdī dakṣaṃ śaptuṃ pracakrame.. 1.34 ..
When the servants of Śiva had been cursed thus by Dakṣa,
then Nandī, intensely enraged, set about cursing Dakṣa:
1.3.35.35
śaptā vayaṃ tvayā vipra sādhavaḥ śivakiṃkarāḥ..
vṛthaiva brahmacāpalyādahaṃ śāpaṃ dadāmi te.. 1.35 ..
"We, the virtuous servants of Śiva, have been cursed by you, O brahmin,
vainly out of brahminical rashness; I give a curse to you:
1.3.35.36
vedavādaratā yūyaṃ nānyadastītivādinaḥ..
kāmātmānaḥ svargaparā lobhamohasamanvitāḥ.. 1.36 ..
Delighting in Vedic arguments, declaring 'there is nothing else,'
you are lustful, intent on heaven, accompanied by greed and delusion.
1.3.35.37
vaidikaṃ ca puraskṛtya brāhmaṇāḥ śūdrayājakāḥ..
daridriṇo bhaviṣyaṃti pratigraharatāḥ sadā.. 1.37 ..
Putting forward the Vedic [ritual], brahmins officiating for Śūdras
will become poor, constantly intent on accepting gifts.
1.3.35.38
dakṣa kecidbhaviṣyanti brāhmaṇā brahmarākṣasāḥ..
..lomaśa uvāca..
viprāste śapitāstena naṃdinā kopinā bhṛśam.. 1.38 ..
O Dakṣa, some brahmins will become brahmarākṣasas."
Lomaśa said:
Those brahmins were cursed very harshly by that angry Nandī.
1.3.35.39
athākarṇyeśvaro vākyaṃ naṃdinaḥ prahasanniva..
uvāca vākyaṃ madhuraṃ bodhayayuktaṃ sadāśivaḥ.. 1.39 ..
Then hearing the words of Nandī, Īśvara, as if smiling,
Sadāśiva spoke sweet words joined with instruction:
1.3.35.40
..mahādeva uvāca..
kopaṃ nārhasi vai kartuṃ brāhmaṇānprati vai sadā..
brāhmaṇāguravo hyete vedavādaratāḥ sadā.. 1.40 ..
Mahādeva said:
You ought not to be angry at any time toward brahmins;
for these brahmins are teachers, constantly devoted to Vedic disputation.
1.3.35.41
vedo maṃtramayaḥ sākṣāttathā sūktamayo bhṛśam..
sūkte pratiṣṭhito hyātmā sarveṣāmapi dehinām.. 1.41 ..
The Veda is directly composed of mantras, and immensely composed of hymns;
in the hymn is established the Self of all embodied beings.
1.3.35.42
tasmānnātmavido nindyā ātmaivāhaṃ na cetaraḥ..
ko'yaṃ kastvaṃ kva cāhaṃ vai kasmācchaptā hi vai dvijāḥ.. 1.42 ..
Therefore knowers of the Self are not to be reviled; I am the Self alone and nothing else.
Who is this? Who are you? And where am I? Why indeed were the twice-born cursed?
1.3.35.43
prapaṃcaracanāṃ hitvā buddho bhava mahāmate..
tattvajñānena nirvartya svasthaḥ krodhādivarjitaḥ.. 1.43 ..
Abandoning the fabricated world, be enlightened, O great-minded one!
Ceasing through knowledge of truth, remain composed, free from anger and the like.
1.3.35.44
evaṃ prabodhitastena śaṃbhunā parameṣṭhinā..
vivekaparamo bhūtvā śailādo hi mahātapāḥ..
śivena saha saṃgamya paramānaṃdasaṃplutaḥ.. 1.44 ..
Thus instructed by Śambhu, the supreme lord,
the son of Śilāda of great austerity became endowed with supreme discernment,
and joining with Śiva, was flooded with supreme bliss.
1.3.35.45
dakṣopi hi ruṣā''viṣṭaṛṣibhiḥ parivāritaḥ..
yayau sthānaṃ svakaṃ tatra praviveśa ruṣā'nvitaḥ.. 1.45 ..
Dakṣa too, overcome by anger, surrounded by the seers,
went to his own place; there he entered, filled with wrath.
1.3.35.46
Abandoning supreme faith, that lowest of men became intent on censuring the worshippers of Śiva;
approaching there with all the great seers, he reviled the god Śarva and never became tranquil.
1.3.35.46_2
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe kedārakhaṇḍe purāṇaprastāvadakṣavṛttāntavarṇanaṃnāma prathamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 1 .. cha ..
Thus ends the first chapter named 'Description of Dakṣa's Story and the Proposal of the Purāṇa,' in the Kedārakhaṇḍa of the first Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
