And through forbearance, the noble woman did not display even the slightest anger. / Then, in the form of a jackal, he defiled that hermitage.

In the form of fire, he burned her great hermitage; / and in the form of a terribly fierce wind, he dragged that auspicious woman. / Thus, repeatedly with terrors such as lions and wolves,

when the queen of Vajrāṅga did not desist at all, / then, thinking the mountain to be wicked, she prepared to utter a curse.
1.4.12.82
tāṃ śāpābhimukhīṃ dṛṣṭvā śailaḥ puruṣāvigrahaḥ..
uvāca tāṃ varārohāṃ tvarayātha sulocanām.. 14.82 ..
Seeing her about to curse, the mountain, assuming a human form, / quickly said to that fair-hipped, beautiful-eyed woman:
1.4.12.83
..śaila uvāca..
nāhaṃ mahāvrate duṣṭaḥ sevyo'haṃ sarvadehinām..
atikhedaṃ karotyeṣa tataḥ kruddhastu vṛtrahā.. 14.83 ..
The mountain said: / "O woman of great vows, I am not wicked; I am to be sought for refuge by all embodied beings. / The slayer of Vṛtra [Indra], enraged, is the one causing excessive distress."

In the meantime, a period of a thousand years had passed. / When that time had passed, the blessed one born of the lotus,

pleased, came to Vajrāṅga at the lake and said:

Brahmā said: / "I grant you all your desires; arise, O son of Diti!" / Thus addressed, the lord of Daityas, a treasury of tapas, then arose / and, with folded hands, spoke words to the grandfather of all worlds:
1.4.12.87
..vajrāṃga uvāca..
āsuro me'stu mā bhāvaḥ śakrarājye ca mā ratiḥ..
tapodharmaratiścāstu vṛṇomyetatpitāmaha.. 14.87 ..
Vajrāṅga said: / "May I not have a demonic disposition, nor any delight in the kingdom of Śakra; / rather, let my delight be in austerity and dharma; this I choose, O Grandfather."
1.4.12.88
evamastviti taṃ brahmā prāha vismitamānasaḥ..

Brahmā, his mind astonished, said to him: "So be it!" / And he disregarded Śakra: who can transcend that which is destined?
1.4.12.89
ṛṣayo manujā devāḥ śivabrahmamukhā api..

Seers, men, and gods, even Śiva, Brahmā, and the rest,
do not overstep what is destined to be, just as the great ocean [does not cross] the shore.
1.4.12.90
iti ciṃtya viriṃco'pi tatraivāṃtaradhīyata..

Reflecting thus, Viriñca vanished right there.
Vajrāṅga too, when his austerity was completed, steady in self-restraint,

desiring food, did not see his wife in his hermitage.
Thinking, "Without a wife one is fruitless," he looked here and there
1.4.12.92
vilokayansvakāṃ bhāryāṃ vidhitsuḥ karma naityakam..

seeking his wife, wishing to perform his daily rite.
As he looked, he then saw his companion for this world and the next,

his dear wife weeping, miserable, her face covered by trees.
Seeing her then, the daitya spoke, consoling her:
1.4.12.94
..vajrāṃga uvāca..

kathaṃ rodiṣi vā bāle mayi jīvati bhartari..
kaṃ vā kāmaṃ prayacchāmi śīghraṃ prabrūhi bhāmini.. 14.94 ..
Vajrāṅga said:
By whom have you been wronged, timid one, while remaining in your own austerity?
Or why do you weep, young woman, while I, your husband, am alive?
Or what desire shall I fulfill for you? Speak quickly, radiant lady.
1.4.12.95

na lālayetpūrayennaiva kāmaṃ sa kiṃ pumānna pumānme matosti.. 14.95 ..
He who would not cherish the mistress of his house, adorned with good virtues, auspicious,
who has joined her husband like the union of the lame and the blind, nor fulfill her desire—
is he a man? In my opinion, he is no man.
