1.4.20.1
..nārada uvāca..
evaṃ viprakṛtā devā maheṃdrasahitāstadā..
yayuḥ svāyaṃbhuvaṃ dāma markarūpamupāśritāḥ.. 22.1 ..
Nārada said:
Thus humiliated, the gods, along with great Indra at that time,
resorting to the form of monkeys, went to the abode of the Self-born One.
1.4.20.2
tataśca vismito brahmā prāha tānsurapuṃgavān..
svarūpeṇeha tiṣṭhadhvaṃ nātra vastārakādbhayam.. 22.2 ..
Then Brahmā, astonished, said to those foremost of gods:
"Stand here in your own forms; there is no fear for you from Tāraka here."
1.4.20.3
tato devāḥ svarūpasthāḥ pramlānavadanāṃbujāḥ..
tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatāḥ sarve pitaraṃ putrakā yathā.. 22.3 ..
Then the gods, assuming their own forms with lotus faces withered,
bowed down and all praised him, like sons praising their father:
1.4.20.4
namo jagatprasūtyai te hetave pālakāya ca..
saṃhartre ca namastubhyaṃ tisro'vasthāstava prabho.. 22.4 ..
"Salutations to you, the source of the universe, the cause, the protector,
and the destroyer—salutations to you; three are your states, O Lord!
1.4.20.5
tvamapaḥ prathamaṃ sṛṣṭvā tāsu vīryamavāsṛjaḥ..
tadaṇḍamabhavaddhaimaṃ yasmillokāścarācarāḥ.. 22.5 ..
Having first created the waters, you cast your seed into them;
that became a golden egg, in which are all moving and unmoving worlds.
1.4.20.6
vedeṣvāhurvirāḍrūpaṃ tvāmekarūpamīdṛśam..
pātālaṃ pādamūlaṃ ca pārṣṇipāde rasātalam.. 22.6 ..
In the Vedas they speak of you as the cosmic form, endowed with a single form like this:
Pātāla is the soles of the feet, and Rasātala the heels and feet.
1.4.20.7
mahātalaṃ cāsya gulphau jaṃghe cāpi talātalam..
sutalaṃ jānunī cāsya ūrū ca vitalātale.. 22.7 ..
Mahātala is his ankles, and Talātala his shanks;
Sutala is his knees, and the two thighs are in Vitala.
1.4.20.8
mahītalaṃ ca jaghanaṃ nābhiścāsya nabhastalam..
jyotiḥ padamuraḥ sthānaṃ svarloko bāhurucyate.. 22.8 ..
The earth is the hips, and the region of the sky is his navel;
the realm of the luminaries is the chest, and the celestial world is called his arms.
1.4.20.9
grīvā mahaścavadanaṃ janalokaḥ prakīrtyate..
lalāṭaṃ ca tapolokaḥ śīrṣa satyamudāhṛtam.. 22.9 ..
The neck is Maharloka, and Janaloka is proclaimed as the face;
Tapoloka is the forehead, and Satyaloka is declared to be the head.
1.4.20.10
candrasūryau ca nayane diśaḥ śrotre nāsikāśvinau..
ātmānaṃ brahmaraṃdhrasthamāhustvāṃ vedavādinaḥ.. 22.10 ..
The moon and the sun are the two eyes, the directions the ears, and the Aśvins the nose;
those who know the Vedas speak of you as the Self residing in the aperture of the crown.
1.4.20.11
evaṃ ye te virāḍrūpaṃ saṃsmaraṃta upāsate..
janmabandhavinirmuktā yāṃti tvāṃ paramaṃ padam.. 22.11 ..
Those who thus worship your cosmic form, remembering it,
freed from the bondage of birth, attain you, the supreme state.
1.4.20.12
evaṃ sthūlaṃ prāṇimadhyaṃ ca śūkṣmaṃ bhāvebhāve bhāvitaṃ tvāṃ gṛṇaṃti..
sarvatrasthaṃ tvāmataḥ prāhurvedāstasmai tubhyaṃ padamja idvidhema.. 22.12 ..
Thus they praise you, gross and subtle within living beings, conceived in every state of being;
therefore the Vedas speak of you as dwelling everywhere. To you, O lotus-born one, we offer worship.
1.4.20.13
evaṃ stuto viraṃcistu kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ..
jānannapi tadā prāha teṣāmāśvāsahetave.. 22.13 ..
Thus praised, the Creator, flooded with compassion,
though knowing [the reason], spoke to them to bring them comfort:
1.4.20.14
sarve bhavanto duḥkhārtāḥ parimlānamukhāṃbujāḥ..
bhraṣṭāyudāstathā'kasmādbhraṣṭā bharaṇavāsasaḥ.. 22.14 ..
"All of you are afflicted with grief, your lotus faces utterly withered,
your weapons cast aside, and suddenly bereft of ornaments and garments.
1.4.20.15
mamaivayaṃ kṛtirdevā bhavatāṃ yadvaḍambanā..
yadvairājaśarīre me bhavanto bāhusaṃjñakāḥ.. 22.15 ..
This humiliation of yours, O gods, is indeed my own affliction;
since in my cosmic body you are designated as the arms.
1.4.20.16
yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṃ dhārmikaṃ corjitaṃ mahat..
tatrāsīdbāhunāśo me bāhusthāne ca te mama.. 22.16 ..
Whatever being is endowed with power, righteous, mighty, and great,
there was the loss of my arm, for you are in the place of my arms.
1.4.20.17
tannūnaṃ mama bhagnau ca bāhū tena durātmanā..
yena copahṛtaṃ devāstanmamākhyātu marhatha.. 22.17 ..
Surely, then, my two arms were broken by that evil-minded one.
By whom was this brought about, O gods? You should tell me that."
1.4.20.18
..devā ūcuḥ..
yo'sau vajrāṃgatanayastvayā dattavaraḥ prabho..
bhṛśaṃ viprakṛtāstena tattvaṃ jānāsi tattvataḥ.. 22.18 ..
The gods said:
That son of Vajrāṅga, unto whom a boon was granted by you, O Lord—
by him we have been greatly tormented; in truth, you know this in reality.
1.4.20.19
yattanmahīsamudrasya taṭaṃ śārvikatīrthakam..
tadākramya kṛtaṃ tena marubhūmisamaṃ prabhoḥ.. 22.19 ..
That which was the shore of the earth’s ocean, a sacred ford dedicated to Śarva—
having invaded that, he has turned the place of the Lord into something like a desert.
1.4.20.20
ṛddhayaḥ sarvadevānāṃ gṛhītāstena sarvataḥ..
mahābhūtasvarūpeṇa sa eva ca jagatpatiḥ.. 22.20 ..
The prosperities of all the gods have been seized by him from all sides;
in the form of the great elements, he alone is the lord of the world.
1.4.20.21
caṃdrasūryau grahāstārā yaccānyaddevapakṣataḥ..
tacca sarvaṃ nirākṛtya sthāpito daityapakṣakaḥ.. 22.21 ..
The moon, the sun, the planets, the stars, and whatever else belonged to the faction of the gods—
having cast all that aside, the faction of the Daityas has been established [in their places].
1.4.20.22
vayaṃ ca vidhṛtā stena bahūpahasitāstathā..
prasādānmuktāśca kathaṃcidiva kaṣṭataḥ.. 22.22 ..
And we have been restrained by him, and greatly mocked as well;
somehow, with great distress, we were released by his favor.
1.4.20.23
tadvayaṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptāḥ pīḍitāḥ kṣuttṛṣārditāḥ..
dharmarakṣā karāśceti saṃciṃtya trātumarhasi.. 22.23 ..
Therefore, afflicted and tormented by hunger and thirst, we have sought refuge;
considering that we are the protectors of dharma, you ought to deliver us.
1.4.20.24
ityuktaḥ svātmabhūrdevaḥ surairdaityaviceṣṭitam..
surānuvāca bhagavānataḥ saṃciṃtya tattvataḥ.. 22.24 ..
Thus addressed by the gods concerning the actions of the Daitya,
the self-born lord, the Blessed One, having considered [it] truly from that [perspective], spoke to the gods:
1.4.20.25
avadhyastārako daityaḥ sarvairapi surāsuraiḥ..
yasya vadhyaśca nādyāpi sa jāto bhagavānpunaḥ.. 22.25 ..
The Daitya Tāraka cannot be slain even by all the gods and Asuras together;
and the Blessed One by whom he is to be slain has not even yet been born.
1.4.20.26
mayā ca varadānena cchandayitvā nivāritaḥ.. 22.26 ..
And he was restrained by me, having been gratified with the granting of a boon.
1.4.20.27
tapasā sa hidīpto'bhūttrailokyadahanātmakaḥ..
sa ca vavre vadhaṃ daityaḥ śiśataḥ saptavāsarāt.. 22.27 ..
For through his austerity he had become ablaze, capable of burning up the three worlds;
and that Daitya chose his slaying by a child seven days old.
1.4.20.28
sa ca saptadino bālaḥ śaṃkarādyo bhaviṣyati..
tārakasya ca vīrasya vadhakartā bhaviṣyati.. 22.28 ..
And that seven-day-old child who will be born from Śaṃkara
shall become the slayer of the heroic Tāraka.
1.4.20.29
satīnāmā tu yā devī vinaṣṭā dakṣahelayā..
sā bhaviṣyati kalyāṇī himācalaśarīrajā.. 22.29 ..
Now, that goddess named Satī who perished through Dakṣa’s disrespect,
that auspicious one will be born from the body of Himācala.
1.4.20.30
śaṃkarasya ca tasyāśca yatnaḥ kāryaḥ samāgame..
ahamapyasya kāryasya śeṣaṃ kartā na saṃśayaḥ.. 22.30 ..
And an effort must be made to bring about the union of Śaṃkara and her;
I too shall accomplish the rest of this task, without a doubt.
1.4.20.31
ityuktāstridaśāstena sākṣātkalayoninā..
jagmurmeruṃ praṇamyeśaṃ markarūpeṇa saṃvṛtāḥ.. 22.31 ..
Having been thus addressed by him, the creator born from the lotus,
the thirty [gods], having bowed to the Lord, went to Meru, disguised in the form of monkeys.
1.4.20.32
tato gateṣu deveṣu brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ..
niśāṃ sasmāra bhagavānsvāṃ tanuṃ pūrvasaṃbhavām.. 22.32 ..
Then, when the gods had departed, Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds,
the Blessed One, called to mind Night, his own body that had originated previously.
1.4.20.33
tato bhagavatī rātrirupatasthe pitāmaham..
tāṃ vivikte samālokya tathovāca vibhāvarīm.. 22.33 ..
Then the blessed Night approached the Grandfather;
beholding that Night in a secluded spot, he spoke to her thus:
1.4.20.34
vibhāvari mahākāryaṃ vibudhānāmupasthitam..
tatkartavyaṃ tvayā devi śrṛṇu kāryasya niścayam.. 22.34 ..
O Night, a great task for the gods has presented itself;
that must be accomplished by you, O goddess; hear the determination of the task.
1.4.20.35
tārakonāma daityeṃdraḥ suraketuranirjjitaḥ..
tasyābhāvāya bhagavāñjanayiṣyati yaṃ śivaḥ.. 22.35 ..
There is a lord of Daityas named Tāraka, the banner of the gods’ defeat, invincible;
for his destruction, the son whom the blessed Śiva will engender—
1.4.20.36
sutaḥ sa bhavitā tasya tārakasyāṃtakārakaḥ..
ahaṃ tvādau yadā jātastadāpaśyaṃ puraḥsthitam.. 22.36 ..
that son of his shall be the cause of Tāraka’s end.
When I was born in the beginning, I saw standing before me
1.4.20.37
ardhanārīśvaraṃ devaṃ vyāpya viśvamavasthitam..
dṛṣṭvā tamabruvaṃ devaṃ bhajasveti ca bhaktitaḥ.. 22.37 ..
the god Ardhanārīśvara, who abides pervading the universe;
seeing him, I said to that god with devotion: ‘Share [yourself].’
1.4.20.38
tato nārī pṛthagjātā puruṣaśca tathā pṛthak..
tasyāścaivāṃśajāḥ sarvāḥ striyastribhuvane smṛtāḥ.. 22.38 ..
Thereupon the woman became separate, and the man likewise separate;
and all women in the three worlds are remembered as born from her portion.
1.4.20.39
ekādaśa ca rudrāśca puruṣāstasya cāṃśajāḥ..
tāṃ nārīmahāmālokya putraṃ dakṣamathā bravam.. 22.39 ..
And the eleven Rudras and men were born from his portion;
beholding that woman, I then spoke to my son Dakṣa:
1.4.20.40
bhajasva putrīṃ jagatī mamāpi ca tavāpi ca..
puṃduḥkhanakāttrātrī putrī te bhāvinī tviyam.. 22.40 ..
‘Accept this daughter of the universe, who belongs to me and also to you;
for she is to become your daughter, the protectress from the distress of men.’
1.4.20.41
evamukto mayā dakṣaḥ putrītve pari kalpitām..
rudrāya dattavānbhaktyā nāma dattvā satīti yat.. 22.41 ..
Being thus addressed by me, Dakṣa gave her, who was assigned daughterhood,
to Rudra with devotion, having bestowed the name Satī [upon her].
1.4.20.42
tataḥ kāle cam̐ kasmiṃścidavamene ca tāṃ pitā..
mumūrṣuḥ pāpasaṃkalpo durātmā kulakajjalaḥ.. 22.42 ..
Then, in the course of time, her father slighted her—
about to die, evil in intent, wicked, a stain upon his lineage.
1.4.20.43
ye rudraṃ naiva manyaṃte te sphuṭaṃ kulakajjalāḥ..
piśācāste durātmāno bhavaṃti brahmarākṣasāḥ.. 22.43 ..
Those who do not honor Rudra are clearly a stain upon their lineage;
those wicked ones become piśācas and brahmarākṣasas.
1.4.20.44
avamānena tasyāpi yathā devī jahau tanum..
yathā yajñaḥ sa ca dhvasto bhavena viditaṃ hi te'.. 22.44 ..
How, through his insult, the goddess abandoned her body,
and how that sacrifice was destroyed by Bhava, is indeed known to you.
1.4.20.45
adhunā himaśailasya bhavitrī duhitā ca sā..
maheśvaraṃ patiṃ sā ca punaḥ prāpsyati niścitam.. 22.45 ..
Now she is to become the daughter of the snowy mountain,
and she will surely obtain Maheśvara again as her husband.
1.4.20.46
tadidaṃ ca tvayā kāryaṃ menāgarbhe praviśya ca..
tasyāśchaviṃ kuru kṛṣṇāṃ yathā kālī bhavettu sā.. 22.46 ..
Therefore, this must be done by you: having entered the womb of Menā,
make her complexion dark, so that she will be Kālī.
1.4.20.47
yadā rudropahasitā tapastapsyati sā mahat..
samāptaniyamā devī yadā cogrā bhaviṣyati.. 22.47 ..
When, mocked by Rudra, she performs great austerity—
when, having completed her vow, the goddess becomes fierce—
1.4.20.48
svayameva yadā rūpaṃ sugauraṃ pratipatsyate..
viraheṇa haraścāsyā matvā śūnyaṃ jagattrayam.. 22.48 ..
when of her own accord she assumes a very fair form—
and Hara, considering the three worlds empty due to separation from her,
1.4.20.49
tasyaiva himaśailasya kaṃdare siddhasevite..
pratīkṣamāṇastāṃ devīmugraṃ saṃtapsyate tapaḥ.. 22.49 ..
in a cave of that very snowy mountain frequented by Siddhas,
awaiting that goddess, will perform fierce austerity.
1.4.20.50
tayoḥ sutaptatapasorbhavitā yo mahānsutaḥ..
bhaviṣyati sa daityasya tārakasya nivārakaḥ.. 22.50 ..
The great son who will be born to the two of them, who have performed severe austerity,
shall be the slayer of the Daitya Tāraka.
1.4.20.51
tapaso hi vinā nāsti siddhiḥ kutrāpi śobhane..
sarvāsāṃ karmasiddhīnāṃ mūlaṃ hi tapa ucyate.. 22.51 ..
For without austerity there is no success anywhere, O fair one;
indeed, austerity is said to be the root of all achievements of actions.
1.4.20.52
tvayāpi dānavo devi dehanirgatayā tadā..
caṃḍamuṃḍapurogāśca haṃtavyā lokadurjayāḥ.. 22.52 ..
By you as well, O goddess, having departed from her body at that time,
the Danavas led by Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, who are invincible to the worlds, must be slain.
1.4.20.53
yasmāccaṃḍaṃ ca muṃḍaṃ ca tvaṃ devi nihaniṣyasi..
cāmuṃḍeti tato loke khyātā devi bhaviṣyasi.. 22.53 ..
Because you will slay Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, O goddess,
therefore you will become renowned in the world as Cāmuṇḍā, O goddess.
1.4.20.54
tatastvāṃ varade devī lokaḥ saṃpūjayiṣyati..
bhederbahuvidhākāraiḥ sarvagāṃ kāmasādhanīm.. 22.54 ..
Then, O boon-giver, the world will worship you, the goddess,
through distinctions of many kinds of forms, as all-pervading and fulfilling desires.
1.4.20.55
oṃkāravaktrāṃ gāyatrīṃ tvāmarcaṃti dvijottamāḥ..
ūrjitāṃ baladāṃ pāpi rājānaḥ sumahābalāḥ.. 22.55 ..
Best of brahmins worship you as Gāyatrī whose face is the syllable Oṃ;
exceedingly powerful kings [worship you] as powerful, granting strength, and protecting.
1.4.20.56
vaiśyāśca bhūtimityeva śivāṃ śūdrāstathā śubhe..
kṣāṃtirmunīnāmakṣobhyā dayā niyamināmapi.. 22.56 ..
Vaiśyas [worship you] as prosperity, and Śūdras as auspicious, O fair one;
[you are] the unshakable forbearance of sages and the compassion of the self-restrained.
1.4.20.57
tvaṃ mahopāya sandohā nītirnayavisarpiṇām..
paristhitistvamarthānāṃ tvamaho prāṇikā matā.. 22.57 ..
You are the assemblage of great means, the policy of those who practice statesmanship;
you are the abiding state of wealth, and oh, you are regarded as the life-force of living beings.
1.4.20.58
tvaṃ yuktiḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ tvaṃ gatiḥ sarvadehinām..
ratistvaṃ raticittānāṃ prītistvaṃ hṛdyadarśinām.. 22.58 ..
You are the expedient of all beings, you are the goal of all embodied beings;
you are pleasure for minds inclined to pleasure, you are love for those who behold what is dear.
1.4.20.59
tvaṃ kāṃtiḥ śubharūpāṇāṃ tvaṃ śāṃti śubhakarmiṇām..
tvaṃ bhrāṃtirmūḍhacittānāṃ tvaṃ phalaṃ kratuyājinām.. 22.59 ..
You are the luster of auspicious forms, you are the peace of those of auspicious deeds;
you are the delusion of confused minds, you are the fruit of those who perform sacrifices.
1.4.20.60
jaladhīnāṃ mahāvelā tvaṃ ca līlā vilāsinām..
saṃbhūtistvaṃ padārthānāṃ sthitistvaṃ lokapālinī.. 22.60 ..
You are the great tide of the oceans, and you are the play of the playful;
you are the origin of existing things, you are the maintenance that protects the world.
1.4.20.61
tvaṃ kālarātrirniḥśeṣa bhuvanāvalināśinī..
priyakaṃṭhagrahānandadāyinī tvaṃ vibhāvarī.. 22.61 ..
You are Kālarātri, the destroyer of the entire series of worlds;
you are the night, granting the bliss of an embrace around a beloved's neck.
1.4.20.62
prasīda praṇatānasmānsaumyadṛṣṭyā vilokaya.. 22.62 ..
Be pleased; look upon us who are bowed down with a gentle gaze.
1.4.20.63
iti stuvaṃto ye devi pūjayiṣyaṃti tvāṃ śubhe..
te sarvakāmānāpsyaṃti niyatā nātra saṃśayaḥ.. 22.63 ..
"Those who praise and worship you thus, O auspicious goddess, / will surely attain all their desires; of this there is no doubt."
1.4.20.64
ityuktā tu niśādevī tathetyuktvā kṛtāñjaliḥ..
jagāma tvaritā pūrvaṃ gṛhaṃ himagirermahat.. 22.64 ..
Thus addressed, the goddess Night said, "So be it," and with folded hands, / swiftly went first to the great mansion of the Himalaya.
1.4.20.65
tatrā''sīnāṃ mahāharmye ratnabhittisamāśraye..
dadarśa menāmāpāṃḍucchavivaktrasaroruhām.. 22.65 ..
There, seated in the great palace supported by jeweled walls, / she saw Menā, whose lotus-like face had a pale complexion,
1.4.20.66
kiṃcicchayāmamukhodagrastanabhāgāvanāmitām..
mahauṣadhigaṇabaddhamaṃtrarājaniṣevitām.. 22.66 ..
bent down by the weight of breasts whose nipples were slightly dark, / and attended by sovereign mantras bound with hosts of great medicinal herbs.
1.4.20.67
tataḥ kiṃcitpramilite menānetrāṃbujadvaye..
āviveśamukhaṃ rātrirbrahmaṇo vacanāttadā.. 22.67 ..
Then, as Menā's pair of lotus eyes gently closed, / Night entered her mouth at that moment by the command of Brahmā.
1.4.20.68
janmadāyā jaganmātuḥ krameṇa jaṭharāṃtaram..
araṃjayacchaviṃ devyā guhamāturvibhāvarī.. 22.68 ..
[Entering] by degrees into the belly of the mother of the universe who was to give birth, / the Night gave color to the complexion of the goddess, the mother of Guha.
1.4.20.69
tato jaganmaṃ galadā menā himagireḥ priyā..
brāhme muhūrte subhage prāsūyata śubhānanām.. 22.69 ..
Then Menā, the beloved of the Himalaya, bestowing auspiciousness on the universe, / gave birth to the auspicious-faced one during the lovely muhūrta sacred to Brahmā.
1.4.20.70

abhavatkrūrasattvānāṃ cetaḥ śāṃtaṃ ca dehinām..
jyotiṣāmapi tejastvamabhavatsutarāṃ tadā.. 22.71 ..
The minds of cruel beings and embodied souls became tranquil, / and the brilliance of the heavenly luminaries then increased exceedingly.

vanāśritāścauṣadhayaḥ svādavaṃti phalāni ca..
gaṃdhavaṃti ca mālyāni vimalaṃ ca nabho'bhavat.. 22.72 ..
The medicinal herbs dwelling in the forests [bore] sweet fruits, / garlands were fragrant, and the sky became spotless.

mārutaśca sukhasparśo diśaśca sumanoharāḥ..
vismṛtā ni ca śāstrāṇi prādurbhāvaṃ prapedire.. 22.73 ..
The wind was pleasant to the touch, and the quarters of the sky were utterly delightful; / and forgotten scriptures manifested anew.
1.4.20.74
prabhāvastīrthamukhyānāṃ tadā puṇyatamo'bhavat..
satye dharme cādhyayane yajñe dāne tapasyapi.. 22.74 ..
The power of the principal sacred fords then became most sacred; / in truth, in righteousness, in Vedic study, in sacrifice, in donation, and in austerity,
1.4.20.75
sarveṣāmabhavacchraddhā janmakāle guhāraṇeḥ..
aṃtarikṣemarāścāpi praharṣotphullalocanāḥ.. 22.75 ..
faith arose in everyone at the time of the birth of the kindling-stick of Guha; / and the gods in the sky, their eyes wide with joy,
1.4.20.76
haribrahmamaheṃdrārkavāyuvahnipurogamāḥ..
puṣpavṛṣṭiṃ pramumucustasminmenāgṛhe śubhe.. 22.76 ..
led by Hari, Brahmā, Mahendra, the Sun, Vāyu, and Agni, / showered down a rain of flowers upon that auspicious dwelling of Menā.

tasminmahotsave prāptā vīrakāṃsyopaśobhitāḥ.. 22.77 ..
