etatsudurlabhaṃ yacca tasyāṃ caiva prajāyate.. 23.39 ..
together, as stated in the Vedas and Purāṇas, bringing welfare to the three worlds. / And extremely hard to obtain is this: that on her is born

1.4.21.42
atha saṃsāriko doṣaḥ svakṛtaṃ yatra bhujyate..
gārhasthyaṃ ca praśaṃsaṃti vedāḥ sarve'pi nārada.. 23.42 ..

ato dhātrā ca śāstreṣu sutalābhaḥ praśaṃsitaḥ.. 23.43 ..

1.4.21.44
punaścasṛṣṭivṛddhyarthaṃ narakatrāṇanāya ca..
tatra strīṇāṃ samutpattiṃ vinā sṛṣṭirna jāyate.. 23.44 ..
for the increase of creation and for deliverance from hell. / In that respect, without the birth of women, creation cannot take place.
1.4.21.45
sā ca jātiprakṛtyaiva kṛpaṇā dainyabhāginī..
tāsāmupari māvajñā bhavediti ca vedhasā..
śāstreṣūktamasaṃdigdhaṃ vākyametanmahātphalam.. 23.45 ..
And by her very nature, that class is wretched, bearing helplessness. / "Let there be no contempt toward them"—thus by the Creator / this unequivocal statement of great fruit has been uttered in the scriptures:
1.4.21.46
daśaputrasamā kanyā daśaputrānpravarddhayan..
yatphalaṃ labhate martyastallabhyaṃ kanyayaikayā.. 23.46 ..
"A daughter is equal to ten sons. Bringing up ten sons, / whatever fruit a mortal obtains, that may be obtained through a single daughter."
1.4.21.47
tasmātkanyā pituḥ śocyā sadā duḥkhavivardhinī.. 23.47 ..
Therefore, a daughter is an object of grief for a father, always increasing distress.
1.4.21.48
yāpi syātpūrṇasarvārthā patiputradhanānvitā..
tvayoktaṃ ca kṛte hyasyāstadvākyaṃ mama śokadam.. 23.48 ..

1.4.21.49
kena doṣeṇa me putrī na yogyā āśiṣāmatā..
na jāto'syāḥ patiḥ kasmādvartate vā kulakṣaṇaḥ.. 23.49 ..
By what fault is my daughter considered unfit for blessings? / Why is her husband unborn, or why is he a destroyer of families?
1.4.21.50
nirdhanaśca mune kasmātsarveṣāṃ sarvadaḥ kutaḥ..
iti durghaṭavākyaṃ te mano mohayatīva me.. 23.50 ..
And why is he destitute, O sage, and whence is he the giver of everything to all? / This contradictory statement of yours seems to bewilder my mind.'
1.4.21.51
iti taṃ putravātsalyātsabhāryaṃ śokasaṃplutam..
ahamāśvāsayaṃ vāgbhiḥ satyābhiḥ pāṃḍunaṃdana.. 23.51 ..
To him, overwhelmed with sorrow along with his wife out of love for their child, / I offered comfort with true words, O son of Pāṇḍu:
1.4.21.52
mā śucaḥ śailarāja tvaṃ harṣasthāne'tipuṇyabhāk..
śrṛṇu tadvacanaṃ mahyaṃ yanmayoktaṃ ca hyarthavat.. 23.52 ..
'Do not grieve, O king of mountains! In this occasion of joy, you are exceedingly fortunate. / Listen to that word of mine, for what I said was meaningful.

jaganmātā tviyaṃ bālā putrī te sarvasiddhidā..
purā bhave'bhavadbhāryā satīnāmnā bhavasya yā.. 23.53 ..

1.4.21.54
tadasyāḥ kimahaṃ dadmi raverdīpamivālpakaḥ..
saṃciṃtyeti mahādevyā nāśiṣaṃ dattavānaham.. 23.54 ..
So what could I, like a tiny lamp before the sun, give to her? / Reflecting thus, I did not bestow a blessing upon the great goddess.
1.4.21.55
na jāto'bhavadbhāryā patiśceti vartate ca bhavo hi saḥ..
na sa jāto mahādevo bhūtabhavyabhavodbhavaḥ.. 23.55 ..
The husband of the unborn wife exists indeed, and he is Bhava himself. / He is unborn, the Great God, the source of past, present, and future,
1.4.21.56
śaraṇyaḥ śāśvataḥ śāstā śaṃkaraḥ parameśvaraḥ.. 23.56 ..
the refuge, eternal, the ruler, Śaṃkara, the supreme lord.
1.4.21.57
sarve devā yatpadamāmanaṃti vedaiśca sarvairapi yo na labhyaḥ..
brahmādiviśvaṃ nanu yasya śaila bālasya vā krīḍanakaṃ vadaṃti.. 23.57 ..
All the gods recite whose state, who cannot be attained even by all the Vedas, / whose plaything they declare the universe beginning with Brahmā to be, like a child's toy, O mountain!
1.4.21.58
sa cāmaṃgalyaśīlo'pi maṃgalāṃ yatano haraḥ..
nirdhanaḥ sarvadaścāsau veda svaṃ svayameva saḥ.. 23.58 ..
And though having inauspicious conduct, Hara is the abode of auspiciousness. / Destitute and the giver of all, he alone knows his own [wealth].
1.4.21.59
sa ca devo'calaḥ sthāṇurmahādevo'jaro haraḥ..
bhaviṣyati patiḥ so'syāstatkimarthaṃ tu śocasi.. 23.59 ..
He, the immovable god, Sthāṇu, the Great God, ageless Hara, / shall be her husband; therefore, why do you grieve?'
