his mind filled with joy, took his pleasure with the goddess in that palace and garden.

protsāhitena cātyarthaṃ mayā kalicikīrṣuṇā.. 27.3 ..
Meanwhile, the gods, severely afflicted by Tāraka
and exceedingly incited by me, who wished to cause conflict,

āsādya te bhavaṃ devaṃ tuṣṭuburbahudhā stavaiḥ..
etasminnaṃtare devī prodvartayata gātrakam.. 27.4 ..
approached the god Bhava and praised him with many hymns.
In the meantime, the goddess was rubbing unguents upon her body.

udvartanamalenātha naraṃ cakre gajānanam..
devānāṃ saṃstavaiḥ puṇyaiḥ kṛpayābhipariplutā.. 27.5 ..
Then, out of the dirt from the unguents, she fashioned an elephant-faced person,
overwhelmed with compassion by the holy praises of the gods.
1.4.25.6
putretyuvāca taṃ devī tataḥ saṃhṛṣṭamānasā..
etasminnaṃtare śarvastatrāgatya vaco'bravīt.. 27.6 ..
With a delighted mind, the goddess said to him, "My son!"
In the meantime, Śarva arrived there and spoke these words:
1.4.25.7
putrastavāyaṃ girije śrṛṇu yādṛgbhaviṣyati..
vikrameṇa ca vīryeṇa kṛpayā sadṛśo mayā.. 27.7 ..
"Hear, O daughter of the mountain, what kind of person this son of yours will be:

ye ca pāpā durācārā vedāndharmaṃ dviṣaṃti ca.. 27.8 ..

ye ca māṃ naiva manyaṃte viṣṇuṃ vāpi jagadgurum.. 27.9 ..
he will create obstacles for them until their death.
And those who do not respect me, or Viṣṇu, the teacher of the universe,

teṣāṃ gṛheṣu kalahaḥ sadā naivopasāmyati.. 27.10 ..
obstructed by the Lord of Obstacles, they shall go to great darkness.
Quarrels in their homes will never cease;

putrasya tava vighnena samūlaṃ tasya naśyati..
yeṣāṃ na pūjyāḥ pūjyaṃte krodhāsatyaparāśca ye.. 27.11 ..
by the obstacle [caused by] your son, they will be utterly destroyed.
For those who do not honor those worthy of honor, who are given to anger and falsehood,
1.4.25.12
raudrasāhasikā ye ca teṣāṃ vighnaṃ kariṣyati..
śrutidharmāñjñātidharmānpālayaṃti gurūṃśca ye.. 27.12 ..
and who are ferocious and rash, he will create obstacles.
For those who maintain the duties of the Vedas, familial duties, and their teachers,
1.4.25.13
kṛpālavo gatakrodhāsteṣāṃ vighnaṃ hariṣyati..
sarve dharmāśca karmāṇi tathā nānāvidhāni ca.. 27.13 ..
who are compassionate and free from anger, he will remove obstacles.
All religious duties and rites of various kinds
1.4.25.14
savighnāni bhivaṣyaṃti pūjayāsya vinā śubhe..
evaṃ śrutvā umā prāha evamastviti śaṃkaram.. 27.14 ..
will be beset with obstacles without worship offered to him, O auspicious lady."
Having heard this, Umā said to Śaṃkara, "So be it."
1.4.25.15
tato bṛhattanuḥ so'bhūttejasā dyotayandiśaḥ..
tato gaṇaiḥ samaṃ śarvaḥ surāṇāṃ pradadau ca tam..
yāvattāra kahaṃtā vo bhavettāvadayaṃ prabhuḥ.. 27.15 ..
Then he became huge-bodied, illuminating the directions with his brilliance.
Then Śarva gave him, along with his attendants, to the gods, [saying]:
"He shall be your lord until the slayer of Tāraka is born."
1.4.25.16
tato vighnapatirdevaiḥ saṃstutaḥ pramatārtihā..
cakāra teṣāṃ kṛtyāni vighnāni ditijanmanām.. 27.16 ..
Then, praised by the gods, the Lord of Obstacles, the destroyer of the distress of the Pramathas,
executed their tasks and placed obstacles before the descendants of Diti.

nurtured it with lovingly fetched waters.

kārayāmāsa tanvaṃgī tatastāṃ munayo'bruvan.. 27.18 ..
Having summoned the seven seers, the slender-limbed lady
had the auspicious rite of the tree performed; then the sages said to her:

kiṃ phalaṃ bhavitā devi kalpitaistaruputrakaiḥ.. 27.19 ..
"You yourself ought to establish the standard along the path you have shown.
What will be the fruit, O goddess, produced from trees adopted as sons?"
1.4.25.20

daśasaraḥsamā kanyā daśakanyāsamaḥ kratuḥ.. 27.21 ..
A step-well is equal to ten wells; a reservoir is equal to ten step-wells;
a daughter is equal to ten reservoirs; a sacrifice is equal to ten daughters;

daśakratusamaḥ putro daśaputrasamo drumaḥ.. 27.22 ..
a son is equal to ten sacrifices; a tree is equal to ten sons.

This is my established rule, ordained for the welfare of the world.
And if restoration of the decayed is done, the fruit is considered double."

sa hi gauratanuḥ śarvo viśeṣācchaśiśobhitaḥ..
raṃjitā ca vibhāvaryā devī nīlotpalacchaviḥ.. 27.59 ..
For Śarva was fair of body, especially adorned with the moon; / and the goddess, tinted like the night, had the luster of a blue lotus.
1.4.25.60

rajanī vā site pakṣe dṛṣṭidoṣaṃ dadāsi me.. 27.61 ..
or like a dark night mixed with moonlight; / like a night during the bright fortnight, you offend my sight!”

uvāca koparaktākṣī bhṛkuṭīvikṛtānanā.. 27.62 ..
Thus addressed by him, Girijā, releasing her neck from Śarva, / with eyes red with anger and face distorted with a frown, said:
1.4.25.63

avaśyamarthī prāpnoti khaṇḍanāṃ śaśikhaṃḍabhṛt.. 27.63 ..
“Every person is humiliated by a person according to their own doing; / an applicant inevitably receives rejection, O Bearer of the Crescent Moon!
1.4.25.64
tapobhirdīptacaritairyattvāṃ prārthitavatyaham..
tasya me niyamasyaivamavamānaḥ padepade.. 27.64 ..
In that I prayed for you through austerities of blazing deeds, / to that vow of mine, there is this insult at every step!
1.4.25.65
naivāhaṃ kuṭilā śarva viṣamā na ca dhūrjaṭe..
svadoṣaistvaṃ gataḥ kṣāṃtiṃ tathā doṣākaraśriyaḥ.. 27.65 ..
I am not crooked, O Śarva, nor am I harsh, O Dhūrjaṭi; / by your own faults have you reached patience, and thus the splendors of the moon.
1.4.25.66
nāhaṃ muṣṇāmi nayane netrahaṃtā bhavānbhava..
bhagastatte vijānāti tathaivedaṃ jagattrayamā.. 27.66 ..
I do not steal eyes; you, Bhava, are the destroyer of eyes; / Bhaga knows that of yours, and so do these three worlds!
1.4.25.67
mūrdhni śūlaṃ janayase svairdoṣairmāmadikṣipan..
yattvaṃ māmāha kṛṣṇeti mahākālo'si viśrutaḥ.. 27.67 ..
You produce a pain in my head, reviling me with your own faults; / as for your calling me ‘black,’ you are renowned as Mahākāla!
1.4.25.68
yāsyāmyahaṃ parityaktumātmānaṃ tapasā girim..
jīvaṃtyā nāsti me kṛtyaṃ dhūrtena paribhūtayā.. 27.68 ..
I shall go to the mountain to abandon myself through austerity; / by living on, humiliated by a rogue, I have no purpose!”
1.4.25.69
niśamya tasyā vacanaṃ kopatīkṣṇākṣaraṃ bhavaḥ..
uvācātha ca saṃbhrāṃto durjñeyacarito haraḥ.. 27.69 ..
Hearing her words of anger and sharp syllables, Bhava, / Hara of inscrutable conduct, was bewildered and said:
1.4.25.70
na tattvajñāsi girije nāhaṃ niṃdāparastava..
cāṭūktibuddhyā kṛtavāṃsta vāhaṃ narmakīrtanam.. 27.70 ..
“You do not know the truth, O Girijā; I was not intent on censuring you. / With a thought toward playful flattery, I spoke in jest.
1.4.25.71
vikalpaḥ svacchacitteti girijaiṣā mama priyā..
prāyeṇa bhūtiliptānāmanyathā ciṃtitā hṛdi.. 27.71 ..
It was a doubt of pure mind, [thinking] ‘This Girijā is my beloved’; / usually, in the hearts of those smeared with ashes, thoughts are conceived differently.
1.4.25.72
asmādṛśānāṃ kṛṣṇāṃgi pravartaṃte'nyathā giraḥ..
yadyevaṃ kupitā bhīru na te vakṣyāmyahaṃ punaḥ.. 27.72 ..
From people like us, O dark-limbed one, words proceed otherwise. / If you are angry in this way, O timid one, I shall not speak to you again.
1.4.25.73
narmavādī bhaviṣyāmi jahi kopaṃ sucismite..
śirasā praṇataste'haṃ racitaste mayāñjaliḥ.. 27.73 ..
I shall speak only in jest; give up your anger, O lady of sweet smiles! / With bowed head I bow to you; I have made a folded-hands gesture to you.
1.4.25.74
dīnenāpyapamānena niṃditā nami vikriyām..
varamasmi vinamro'pi na tvaṃ devi guṇānvitā.. 27.74 ..
Even with poor humiliation, censured, do not fall into distress; / it is better that I am humble; are you not endowed with virtues, O goddess?”
1.4.25.75
ityanekaiścāṭuvākyaiḥ sūktairdevena bodhitā..
kopaṃ tīvraṃ na tatyāja satī marmaṇi ghaṭṭitā.. 27.75 ..
Addressed thus with many flattering words and sweet speeches by the god,
Satī, wounded to the quick, did not abandon her fierce anger.
1.4.25.76
avaṣṭabdhāvatha kṣiptvā pādau śaṃkarapāṇinā..
viparyastālakā vegādgantumaicchata śailajā.. 27.76 ..
Then, tossing away her feet that had been seized by Śaṃkara's hand,
with disheveled curls, the Mountain's daughter swiftly sought to depart.
1.4.25.77
tasyāṃ vrajantyāṃ kopena punarāha purāṃtakaḥ..
satyaṃ sarvairavayavaiḥ suteti sadṛśī pituḥ.. 27.77 ..
As she was departing in anger, the Destroyer of the [Three] Cities spoke again:
"It is true: in every limb, a daughter resembles her father.
1.4.25.78
himācalasya śrṛṃgaistairmeghamālākulairmanaḥ..
tathā duravāgāhyo'sau hṛdayebhyastavāśayaḥ.. 27.78 ..
Just like the peaks of the snowy mountain that are enveloped by rows of clouds,
so too is your mind: the intention of your heart is impassable.
1.4.25.79
kāṭhinyaṃ kaṣṭamasmiṃste vanebhyo bahudhā gatam..
kuṭilatvaṃ nadībhyaste duḥsevyatvaṃ himādapi.. 27.79 ..
Painful hardness has passed into you in many ways from the forests;
crookedness from the rivers, and difficult accessibility even from the frost.
1.4.25.80
saṃkrāṃtaṃ sarvamevaitattava devī himācalāt..
ityuktā sā punaḥ prāha giriśaṃ sailajā tadā.. 27.80 ..
All this has passed onto you, O goddess, from the snowy mountain."
Spoken to thus, the Mountain's daughter then replied to Giriśa:
1.4.25.81
kopakaṃpitadhūmrāsyā prasphuraddaśanacchadā..
mā śarvātmopamānena niṃda tvaṃ guṇino janān.. 27.81 ..
Her face trembling and darkened with anger, her lips quivering:
