whom we regarded as mere grass! Behold the wonder of Time! / Therefore, drive this chariot quickly toward the gods!
1.4.30.56
paśyaṃtu me balaṃ bāhvordravaṃtu ca surādhamāḥ..
bruvannevaṃ sārathiṃ sa vidhunvansumahaddhanuḥ.. 32.56 ..
Let them behold the strength of my arms, and let the vile gods flee!" / Speaking thus to his charioteer and shaking his immense bow,
1.4.30.57
krodha raktekṣaṇo rājā devasainyaṃ samāviśat..
āgacchamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā hariḥ skaṃdamathābravīt.. 32.57 ..
the king, his eyes red with rage, plunged into the divine army. / Seeing him approaching, Hari then spoke to Skanda:
1.4.30.58
kumāra paśya daityeṃdraṃ kālaṃ yadvadyugātyaye..
ayaṃ sa yena tapasā ghoreṇārādhitaḥ śivaḥ.. 32.58 ..
"Kumāra, look at the daitya king, who resembles Death at the end of an age! / This is he by whom Śiva was propitiated with fierce austerity;
1.4.30.59
ayaṃ sa yena śakrādyāḥ kṛtā markāḥ samārbudam..
ayaṃ sa sarvaśastraigairyo'smābhirna jito raṇe.. 32.59 ..
this is he by whom Śakra and the rest were turned into monkeys for hundreds of millions of years; / this is he who could not be conquered in battle by us with all hosts of weapons.
1.4.30.60
nāvajñayā pradraṣṭavyastārako'yaṃ mahāsuraḥ..
saptamaṃ hi dinaṃ te'dya madhyāhno'yaṃ ca vartate.. 32.60 ..
This great asura Tāraka must not be regarded with contempt. / Today is indeed your seventh day, and it is now midday."

evamuktvā sa śakrādīṃstvaritaḥ keśavo'bravīt.. 32.61 ..
"Slay him before sunset; otherwise he cannot be killed."
Having spoken thus to Śakra and the others, Keśava swiftly said:

tataste viṣṇuvacanādvinadanto divaukasaḥ.. 32.62 ..
"Weary the king of the Daityas so that he may easily be slain."
Then, at Viṣṇu's command, the roaring denizens of heaven,
1.4.30.63
tamāsādya śaravrātairmuditāḥ samavākiran..
prahasanniva devāṃstāndrāvayāmāsa tārakaḥ.. 32.63 ..
Approaching him, joyfully showered him with volleys of arrows.
As if laughing, Tāraka put those gods to flight,
1.4.30.64
yathā nāstikadurvṛtto nānāśāstropadeśakān..
soḍhuṃ śaktā na te vīraṃ mahati syaṃdane sthitam.. 32.64 ..
Just as an immoral atheist [puts to flight] teachers of various scriptures.
They were unable to withstand that hero standing in his mighty chariot,
1.4.30.65
mahāpasmārasaṃkrāṃtaṃ yathaivāpriyavādinam..
vidhūya sakalāndevānkṣaṇamātreṇa tārakaḥ.. 32.65 ..
Just as [one cannot endure] a speaker of unpleasant words afflicted with severe epilepsy.
Having brushed aside all the gods in a mere moment, Tāraka
1.4.30.66
ājagāma kumārāya vidhuvansa mahādhanuḥ..
āgacchamānaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā skaṃdaḥ pratyudyayau tataḥ.. 32.66 ..
Came toward Kumāra, brandishing his mighty bow.
Seeing him advancing, Skanda then stepped forth against him.
1.4.30.67
tasyārakṣadbhavaḥ pārśvaṃ dakṣiṇaṃ caiva taṃ hariḥ..
pṛṣṭhe ca pārṣadāstasya koṭiśo'rbadaśastathā.. 32.67 ..
Bhava protected his side, and Hari protected his right [flank],
and at his back were his attendants in their tens of millions and hundreds of millions.
1.4.30.68
tatastau sumahāyuddhe saṃsaktau devadaityayauḥ..
dharmādharmāvivodagrau jagadāścaryakārakau.. 32.68 ..
Then the two, of the gods and the Daityas, clashed in a stupendous battle,
lofty like righteousness and unrighteousness, causing wonder to the world.
1.4.30.69
tataḥ kumāramāsādya līlayā tārako'bravīt..
aho bālātibālastvaṃ yattvaṃ gīrvāṇavākyataḥ.. 32.69 ..
Then, having approached Kumāra, Tāraka playfully said:
"Ah, you are a mere child, an utter child, that at the word of the gods
1.4.30.70
āsādayasi māṃ yuddhe pataṃga iva pāvakam..
vadhena tava ko lābho mama mukto'si bālaka.. 32.70 ..
You approach me in battle, like a moth into fire!
What gain is there for me in your death? You are spared, child!
1.4.30.71
piṣa kṣīraṃ gṛhāṇemaṃ kaṃdukaṃ krīḍa līlayā..
evamuktaḥ prahasyāha tārakaṃ yogināṃ guruḥ.. 32.71 ..
Drink milk, take this ball, and play at your ease!"
Spoken to thus, the guru of yogins laughed and said to Tāraka:
1.4.30.72
śiśutvaṃ māvamaṃsthā me śiśuḥ kaṣṭo bhujaṃgamaḥ..
duṣprekṣyo bhāskaro bālo duḥsparśo'lpo'pi pāvakaḥ.. 32.72 ..
"Do not despise my childhood: a young serpent is dangerous;
the morning sun is hard to gaze upon; even a tiny fire is difficult to touch.
1.4.30.73
alpākṣaro na maṃtraḥ kiṃ sasphuro daitya dṛśyate..
evamuktvā daityamuktaṃ gṛhītvā kaṃdukaṃ ca tam.. 32.73 ..
Is not a mantra with few syllables seen to be radiant with power, O Daitya?"
Having spoken thus and caught that ball thrown by the Daitya,
1.4.30.74
tasmiñchaktyastramādāya daityāya pramumoca ha..
tasya tena prahārema rathaścūrṇikṛto'bhavat.. 32.74 ..
He took up his śakti weapon against it and hurled it at the Daitya.
By its strike, his chariot was reduced to powder—
1.4.30.75
caturyojanamātro yo nānāścaryasamanvitaḥ..
garuḍasya sutā ye ca śīryamāṇe rathottame.. 32.75 ..
A chariot four yojanas in size, endowed with various wonders.
And the sons of Garuḍa [yoked to it], when that excellent chariot was shattered,
1.4.30.76
muktāḥ kathaṃcidutpatya sāgarāṃtaramāviśan..
tataḥ kruddhastārakaśca mudgaraṃ kṣiptavānguhe.. 32.76 ..
Somehow escaped, flew up, and plunged into the midst of the ocean.
Then the enraged Tāraka hurled a club at Guha.
1.4.30.77
viṃdhyādrimiva taṃ skaṃdo gṛhītvā taṃ vyatāḍayat..
sthire tasyorasi vyūḍhe mudgaraḥ śatadhā'gamat.. 32.77 ..
Skanda, receiving it like the Vindhya mountain, struck it;
on his firm and broad chest the club broke into a hundred pieces.
1.4.30.78
mene ca durjayaṃ daityastadā ṣaḍvadanaṃ raṇe..
ciṃtayāmāsa buddhyā ca prāptaṃ tadbrahmaṇo vacaḥ.. 32.78 ..
Then the Daitya considered the six-faced god invincible in battle,
and reflected in his mind: "That word of Brahmā has come to pass."
1.4.30.79
taṃ bhītamiva cālakṣya daityavīrāśca koṭiśaḥ..
nadaṃto'timahāsenaṃ nānāśastrairavākiran.. 32.79 ..
Perceiving him to be as if afraid, the Daitya heroes in their millions,
roaring, showered Mahāsena with various weapons.
1.4.30.80
kruddhasteṣu tataḥ skaṃdaḥ śaktiṃ ghorāmathādade..
abhyasyamāne śaktyastre skaṃdanāmitatejasā.. 32.80 ..
Enraged at them, Skanda then seized his dreadful śakti;
as the śakti weapon was wielded by Skanda of immeasurable splendor,
1.4.30.81
ulkājālaṃ mahāghoraṃ papāta vasudhātale..
cālyamānā tathā śaktiḥ sughorā bhavasūnunā.. 32.81 ..
A terrifying shower of meteors fell upon the surface of the earth.
And as that most dreadful śakti was swung by the son of Bhava,
1.4.30.82
tataḥ koṭyo viniṣpetuḥ śaktīnāṃ bhartarṣabha..
sa śaktyastreṇa balavānkarasthenāhanatprabhuḥ.. 32.82 ..
Millions of śaktis burst forth, O best of the Bhāratas!
With the śakti weapon held in his hand, that powerful lord struck down
1.4.30.83
aṣṭau padmāni daitvānāṃ daśakoṭiśatāni ca..
tathā niyutasāhasraṃ vāhanaṃ koṭireva ca.. 32.83 ..
Eight hundred million Daityas and one hundred million more,
as well as a hundred million thousand mounts and a crore [more],
1.4.30.84
hraṃdodaraṃ ca daityeṃdraṃ nikharvairdaśabhirvṛtam..
tatrākurvansutumulaṃ nādaṃ vadhyeṣu śatruṣu.. 32.84 ..
And the Daitya lord Hradodara, surrounded by ten nikharvas [of warriors].
There, as the enemies were being slaughtered, a tumultuous roar was raised
1.4.30.85
kumārānucarāḥ pārtha pūrayaṃto diśo daśa..
śaktyastrasyārciḥ saṃbhūtaśaktibhiḥ ke'pi sūditāḥ.. 32.85 ..
By Kumāra's followers, O Pārtha, filling the ten directions.
Some were slain by the spears born from the radiance of the śakti weapon;
1.4.30.86
patākayāvadhūtāśca hatāḥ kecitsahasraśaḥ..
keciddhaṃṭāravatrastāśchinnabhinnahṛdo'patan.. 32.86 ..
Some were struck down by thousands, swept away by his banner;
some, terrified by the sound of his bell, fell with broken and shattered hearts;
1.4.30.87
kecinmayūrapakṣābhyāṃ caraṇābhyāṃ ca sūditāḥ..
koṭiśastāmracūḍena vidāryaiva ca bhakṣitāḥ.. 32.87 ..
Some were destroyed by the peacock's wings and feet;
and by the tens of millions, they were torn apart and devoured by the rooster;
1.4.30.88
pārṣadairmātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṃ padmaśo nihatāḥ pare..
evaṃ nihanyamāneṣu dānaveṣu guhādibhiḥ.. 32.88 ..
Others were slaughtered by the hundreds of millions by his attendants together with the Mothers.
While the Dānavas were thus being destroyed by Guha and the others,
1.4.30.89
abhāgyairiva lokeṣu tārakaḥ skaṃdamāyayau..
jagrāha ca gadāṃ divyāṃ lakṣaghaṃṭādurāsadām.. 32.89 ..
Tāraka advanced against Skanda, like misfortune falling upon the worlds,
and seized a divine mace, unassailable with its hundred thousand bells.
1.4.30.90
tayā mayūramājaghne mayūro vimukho'bhavat..
dṛṣṭvā parāṅmukhaṃ lokeṣu vāsudevo'bravīttvaran.. 32.90 ..
With it he struck the peacock, and the peacock turned away.
Seeing him turned back in the sight of the worlds, Vāsudeva urgently said:
1.4.30.91
devasenāpate śīghraṃ śaktiṃ muṃca mahāsure..
pratijñāmātmanaḥ pāhi laṃbate ravimaṃḍalam.. 32.91 ..
"O Commander of the Army of the Gods, swiftly unleash your śakti upon the great Asura!
Fulfill your vow: the solar disk is sinking low!"
1.4.30.92
..skaṃda uvāca..
tvayaiva rudrabhakto'yaṃ janārdana mameritam..
vadhārthaṃ rudrabhaktasya bāhuḥ śaktiṃ muṃcati.. 32.92 ..
Skanda said:
"It was you yourself, O Janārdana, who told me, 'He is a devotee of Rudra.'
How can my arm release a śakti for the slaying of a devotee of Rudra?
1.4.30.93
nārudraḥ pūjayedrudraṃ bhaktarūpasya yo haraḥ..
rudrarūpamamuṃ hatvā kīdṛśaṃ janmano bhavet.. 32.93 ..
One who is not Rudra cannot worship Rudra; Hara himself takes the form of his devotee.
Having killed him who has the form of Rudra, what would become of my existence?
1.4.30.94
tiraskṛtā vipralabdhāḥ śaptāḥ kṣiptāḥ prapīḍitāḥ..
rudrabhaktāḥ kulaṃ sarvaṃ nirdahaṃti hatāḥ kimu.. 32.94 ..
When insulted, deceived, cursed, repulsed, or tormented,
devotees of Rudra burn down an entire lineage—how much more so if slain?
1.4.30.95
eṣa ceddhaṃti tadbhadraṃ hanyatāmeṣa māṃ raṇe..
rudrabhakte punarviṣṇo nāhaṃ śastramupādade.. 32.95 ..
If he kills me, let it be so: let him slay me in battle!
Yet against a devotee of Rudra, O Viṣṇu, I will not take up a weapon again."
1.4.30.96
..śrībhagavānuvāca..
naitattavocitaṃ skaṃda rudrabhakto yathā śrṛṇu..
dve tanū girijābharturvedajñā munayo viduḥ.. 32.96 ..
The Blessed Lord said:
"This is not fitting for you, Skanda; hear who a true devotee of Rudra is:
Seers who know the Veda understand that the husband of Girijā has two forms:
1.4.30.97
ekā jīvātmikā tatra pratyakṣā ca tathāparā..
drogdhā bhūteṣu bhaktaśca rudrabhakto na sa smṛtaḥ.. 32.97 ..
One consisting of the individual self, and the other directly manifest.
One who injures living beings, even if a devotee, is not considered a devotee of Rudra.
1.4.30.98
bhakto rudro kṛpāvāṃśca jaṃtuṣveva haravrataḥ..
tadenaṃ bhūtamartyeṣu drogdhāraṃ tvaṃ pinākinaḥ.. 32.98 ..
A devotee of Rudra is compassionate toward living beings, devoted to Hara's vows.
Therefore, slay this hater of the wielder of Pināka toward living beings and mortals;
1.4.30.99
jahi naivātra paśyāmi doṣaṃ kaṃcana te prabho..
śrutveti vācaṃ goviṃdātsatyārthāmapi bhārata.. 32.99 ..
I see no fault whatsoever in you for this, O Lord."
Having heard these words from Govinda, though they were true, O Bhārata,
1.4.30.100
haṃtuṃ na kurute buddhiṃ rudrabhakta iti smaran..
tārakastu tataḥ kruddho yayau vegena keśavam.. 32.100 ..
He did not make up his mind to kill him, remembering, 'He is a devotee of Rudra.'
Then Tāraka, enraged, rushed with speed toward Keśava,
1.4.30.101
prāha caivaṃ sudurbuddhe hanmi tvāṃ paśya me balam..
devānāṃ cāpi dharmāṇāṃ mūlaṃ matimatāṃ tathā..
hatvā tvāmadya sarvāṃstāṃśchetsye paśyādya me balam.. 32.101 ..
And spoke thus: "O fool, I shall kill you! Behold my power!
You are the root of the gods, of dharmas, and of the wise;
having slain you today, I shall cut down all of them! Behold my power today!"
1.4.30.102
..viṣṇuruvāca..
daityeṃdra tava cāsmābhiḥ kimaho śrṛṇu satyatām.. 32.102 ..
Viṣṇu said:
"O king of the Daityas, what do you have to do with us? Hear the truth!
1.4.30.103
rathe ya eṣa śarvo'yaṃ hate'sminsakalaṃ hatam..
śrutveti tārakaḥ kruddhastūrṇaṃ rudrarathaṃ yayau.. 32.103 ..
It is Śarva who stands here in this chariot; once he is killed, everything is killed."
Hearing this, the enraged Tāraka swiftly rushed toward the chariot of Rudra.
1.4.30.104
abhisṛtya sa jagrāha rudrasya rathakūbaram..
yadā sa kūbaraṃ kruddhastārakaḥ sahasā'grahīt.. 32.104 ..
Advancing, he seized the yoke of Rudra's chariot. / When enraged Tāraka suddenly took hold of the yoke,
1.4.30.105
resatū rodasī tūrṇaṃ mumuhuśca maharṣayaḥ..
vyanadaṃśca mahākāyā daityā jaladharopamāḥ.. 32.105 ..
the two worlds quickly shrieked, and the great seers were bewildered. / The cloud-like, huge-bodied Daityas roared out,
1.4.30.106
āsīcca niścitaṃ teṣāṃ jitamasmābhirityuta..
tāra kasyāpyabhiprāyaṃ bhagavānvīkṣya śaṃkaraḥ.. 32.106 ..
and their conviction was: “We have won!” / Seeing the intention of Tāraka too, the blessed Śaṃkara,
1.4.30.107
umayā saha saṃtyaktvā rathaṃ vṛṣabhamāvahat..
omityatha japanbrahmā ākāśaṃ sahasāśritaḥ.. 32.107 ..
abandoning the chariot together with Umā, mounted his bull. / Then Brahmā, chanting “Om,” quickly took to the sky.
1.4.30.108
tatastaṃ śatasiṃhaṃ ca rathaṃ rudreṇa nirmitam..
utkṣipya pṛthvyāmāsphoṭya cūrṇayāmāsa tārakaḥ.. 32.108 ..
Then Tāraka, lifting up that chariot fashioned with a hundred lions by Rudra / and dashing it against the earth, smashed it to pieces.
1.4.30.109
śūlapāśupatādīni sahasopasthitāni ca..
vārayāmāsa giriśo bhavaḥ sādhya iti bruvan.. 32.109 ..
And when the trident, the Pāśupata, and other [weapons] suddenly approached, / the Mountain-dweller restrained them, saying, “Bhava is to be mastered [by himself alone].”
1.4.30.110
tataḥ svavaṃcitaṃ jñātvā rudreṇātmānamīrṣyayā..
vinadansahasā'dhāvadvṛṣabhasthaṃ maheśvaram.. 32.110 ..
Then, realising he had been tricked by Rudra, out of jealousy, / shouting loudly, he suddenly rushed at Maheśvara seated on the bull.
1.4.30.111
tato janārdano'dhāvaccakramudyamya vegataḥ..
vajramiṃdrastathodyamya daṃḍaṃ cāpi yamo nadan.. 32.111 ..
Then Janārdana rushed forward, swiftly brandishing his discus, / Indra likewise raising his thunderbolt, and Yama roaring with his rod,
1.4.30.112
gadāṃ dhaneśvaraḥ kruddhaḥ pāśaṃ ca varuṇo nadan
vāyurmahāṃkuśaṃ ghoraṃ śaktiṃ vahnirmahāprabhām.. 32.112 ..
the Lord of Wealth enraged with his mace, and Varuṇa roaring with his noose, / Vāyu with a terrible great hook, Agni with his splendid spear,
1.4.30.113
nirṛtirniśitaṃ khaḍgaṃ rudrāḥ śūlāni kopitāḥ..
dhanūṃṣi sādhyā devāśca parighānvasavastathā.. 32.113 ..
Nirṛti with his sharp sword, the enraged Rudras with their tridents, / the Sādhya gods with bows, and likewise the Vasus with bludgeons,
1.4.30.114
viśvedevāśca musalaṃ caṃdrārkau svaprabhāmapi..
oṣadhīścāśvinau devau nāgāśca jvalitaṃ viṣam.. 32.114 ..
and the Viśvedevas with a pestle, the sun and moon with their own radiance, / the two divine Aśvins with herbs, and the serpents with blazing poison,
1.4.30.115
himādri pramukhāścāpi samudyamya mahīdharān..
bhṛśamunnadato devāndhāvato vīkṣya tārakaḥ.. 32.115 ..
and the mountains headed by Himādri taking up great rocks. / Seeing the gods rushing forward shouting loudly, Tāraka,
1.4.30.116
nivṛttaḥ sahasā pārtha mahāgaja ivonnadan..
sa vajramuṣṭi nāhatya bhuje śakramapātayat.. 32.116 ..
turning back suddenly, O son of Pṛthā, like a roaring great elephant, / struck Indra with a fist like a thunderbolt and felled him by his arm.
1.4.30.117
daṃḍaṃ yamādupādāya mūrdhnyāhatya nyapātayat..
urasāhatya sagadaṃ dhanadaṃ bhuvyapātayat.. 32.117 ..
Seizing the rod from Yama, he struck him on the head and struck him down; / striking the Wealth-giver along with his mace on the chest, he threw him to the earth;
1.4.30.118
varuṇātpāśamādāya tena baddhā nyapātayat..
mahāṃkuśena vāyuṃ ca ciraṃ mūrdhni jaghāna saḥ.. 32.118 ..
taking the noose from Varuṇa, he bound him with it and threw him down; / and with the great hook he struck Vāyu for a long time on the head.
1.4.30.119
phūlkārairuddhataṃ vahniṃ śamayāmāsa tārakaḥ..
nirṛtiṃkhaḍgamādāya hatvā tena nyapātayat.. 32.119 ..
With his blowing breaths Tāraka extinguished the fierce fire; / seizing the sword from Nirṛti, he struck and felled him with it.
1.4.30.120
śūlaireva tathā rudrāḥ sādhyāśca dhanuṣārditāḥ..
parighaireva vasavo muśalaireva viśvakāḥ.. 32.120 ..
Likewise the Rudras were afflicted by their own tridents, the Sādhyas by their bow, / the Vasus by their very bludgeons, the Viśvas by their pestles.
1.4.30.121
reṇunācchādya caṃdrārkau valmīkasthāvivekṣitau..
mahogrāścauṣadhīstālairaśvibhyāṃ so'bhyavartayat.. 32.121 ..
Covering the moon and sun with dust, they were seen as if inside an ant-hill; / with palmyra trees he repelled the terrible herbs of the Aśvins;
1.4.30.122
saviṣāśca kṛtā nāgā nirviṣāḥ pādakuṭṭanaiḥ..
parvatāḥ parvataireva nirucchvāsā bhṛśaṃ kṛtāḥ.. 32.122 ..
the venomous serpents were rendered venomless by the stomping of his feet; / and the mountains were made thoroughly breathless by the mountains themselves.
1.4.30.123
evaṃ taddevasainyaṃ ca hāhābhūtamacetanam..
kṛtvā muhūrtādādhāvaccakrapāṇiṃ tamunnadan.. 32.123 ..
Having thus thrown that divine army into lamentation and unconsciousness in a moment, / he rushed roaring at that Discus-bearer.
1.4.30.124
tataścāṃtardadhe sadyaḥ prahasanniva keśavaḥ..
kuyogina iva svāmī sadā buddhimatāṃ varaḥ.. 32.124 ..
Then Keśava vanished immediately, as if laughing, / just like the master [disappears] from a bad ascetic, he who is ever foremost among the wise.
1.4.30.125
apaśyaṃstārako viṣṇuṃ punarvṛṣabhavā hanam..
ādhāvatkupito daityo muṣṭimudyamya vegataḥ.. 32.125 ..
Not seeing Viṣṇu, the angry Daitya rushed again / toward the one mounted on the bull, swiftly raising his fist.
1.4.30.126
acirāṃśurivālakṣyo lakṣyotha bhagavānhariḥ..
ābabhāṣe tato devānbāhumudyamyacoccakaiḥ.. 32.126 ..
Hard to perceive like lightning, the blessed Hari then became visible, / and raising his arm high, he spoke to the gods:
1.4.30.127
palāyadhvamaho devāḥ śaktiścedvaḥ palāyitum..
vimūḍhā hi vayaṃ sarve ye bālavacasāgatāḥ.. 32.127 ..
“Flee, O gods, if you have the power to flee! / For we are all utterly foolish, having come at the word of a child.
1.4.30.128
kiṃ na śrutaḥ purā gītaḥ ślokaḥ svāyaṃbhuvena yaḥ..
yathā bāleṣu nikṣiptāḥ strīṣu ṣaṃḍitakeṣu ca..
apasmārīṣu caivāpi sarve te saṃśayaṃ gatāḥ.. 32.128 ..
Have you not heard the verse sung long ago by the self-manifest [Manu]? / ‘Whatever is entrusted to children, women, eunuchs, / and those with epilepsy—all of it comes to doubt.’
1.4.30.129
pratyakṣaṃ tadidaṃ sarvamādhunā cātra dṛsyate.. 32.129 ..
All that is directly seen here right now.
1.4.30.130
ajñāsiṣma puraivaitadrudrabhaktaṃ na haṃtyasau..
yatpratijñāṃ nākariṣyanna syānnaḥ kadanaṃ mahat.. 32.130 ..
We already knew before that he does not kill a devotee of Rudra; / had he not made that vow, there would not be our great slaughter.
1.4.30.131
athaiṣa yadi daityeṃdraṃ na nihaṃti kubuddhimān..
mā bhayaṃ vo mahābhāgā nihaniṣyāmi vo ripūn.. 32.131 ..
Now, if this foolish one does not slay the lord of Daityas, / do not fear, O fortunate ones; I will slay your enemies.
1.4.30.132
adya me vipulaṃ bāhvorbalaṃ paśyata daityādhamaṃ nāśayāmi muṣṭinaikena paśyata.. 32.132 ..
Today behold the vast strength of my arms; behold, / I shall destroy this vilest Daitya with a single fist!
1.4.30.133
mayā hi dakṣiṇo bāhurdattaśca bhavatāṃ sadā..
ripūnvā nihaniṣyāmi satyaṃ tatparipālaye.. 32.133 ..
For my right arm has always been given to you: / I shall kill the enemies—I uphold that truth!
1.4.30.134
yeṃ'bare ye ca pātāle bhuvi ye ca mahāsurāḥ..
kṣaṇāttānnāsayiṣyāmi mahāvāto ghanāniva.. 32.134 ..
Those who are in the sky, those in Pātāla, and the great Asuras who are on earth— / I will destroy them in an instant, like a great wind destroys clouds.”
1.4.30.135
evamuktā jagannātho muṣṭimudyamya dakṣiṇam..
nirāyudhastārkṣyapṛṣṭhādavaplutyābhyadhāvata.. 32.135 ..
Having spoken thus, the Lord of the Universe raised his right fist, / leaped down unarmed from the back of Garuḍa, and rushed forward.
1.4.30.136
tasmindhāvati goviṃde cacāla bhuvanatrayam..
vimūrchitamabhūdviśvaṃ devā bhītiṃ parāṃ yayuḥ.. 32.136 ..
As Govinda ran, the three worlds shook; / the universe swooned, and the gods experienced supreme fear.
1.4.30.137
dhāvataścāpi kalpāṃtaṃ rudrakalpasya tasya yāḥ..
mukhātsamudyajurjvālāstābiḥ kharvaśataṃ hatam.. 32.137 ..
And as he ran like Rudra's world-destroying fire, the flames / that burst from his mouth slew hundreds of billions [of demons].
1.4.30.138
tatoṃ'tarikṣe vācaśca procuḥ siddhāḥ svayaṃ tadā..
jahi kopaṃ vāsudeva tvayi kruddhe kva vai jagat.. 32.138 ..
Then in the sky the Siddhas themselves spoke words: / “Restrain your anger, Vāsudeva! When you are angry, where indeed will the world be?”
1.4.30.139
anādṛtyeva tadvākyaṃ bruvannānyatkaromyaham..
āhvayaṃśca mahādaityaṃ kruddho hariradhāvata.. 32.139 ..
Disregarding that statement as it were, saying “I will do nothing else,” / and challenging the great Daitya, wrathful Hari ran.
1.4.30.140
uvāca vācaṃ sādhūṃśca yatnātpālayatāṃ phalam..
duṣṭānvinighnatāṃ caiva tatphalaṃ mama jāyatām.. 32.140 ..
He spoke a word: “The fruit that comes to those who protect the virtuous with effort / and to those who slay the wicked—may that fruit be mine!”
1.4.30.141
athāpaśyanmahāseno rudraṃ yāṃtaṃ ca tārakam..
tārakaṃ cānvadhāvantaṃ purāmapuruṣaṃ harim.. 32.141 ..
Then Mahāsena saw Rudra, and Tāraka advancing [toward him], / and Hari, the foremost Puruṣa, running after Tāraka;
1.4.30.142
jagacca kṣubdhamatyarthaṃ svāṃ pratijñāṃ purā kṛtām..
paścimāṃ pratilaṃbaṃtaṃ bhāskaraṃ cāpi lohitam.. 32.142 ..
and the world exceedingly agitated; and his own vow made formerly; / and the red sun sinking toward the west;
1.4.30.143
ākāśavāṇīṃ śrṛṇvaṃśca kiṃ skanda tvaṃ viṣīdasī..
paścāttāpo yadi bhavetkṛtvā brahmavadhaṃ tvayi.. 32.143 ..
and hearing a voice in the sky: “Why do you despair, O Skanda? / If repentance should occur in you upon committing the slaying of a brahmin,
1.4.30.144
sthāpayerligamīśasya mokṣo hatyāśatairapi..
āviveśa mahākrodhaṃ didhakṣuriva medinīm.. 32.144 ..
you shall establish a liṅga of the Lord; there is liberation even from hundreds of killings!” / Then he was filled with great wrath, as if desiring to burn the earth.
1.4.30.145
athotplutya mayūrātsa prahasanniva keśavam..
bāhubhyāmapyupādāya provāca bhavanaṃdanaḥ.. 32.145 ..
Then leaping down from his peacock, smiling as it were at Keśava / and catching him with his two arms, the son of Bhava said:
1.4.30.146
jānāmi tvāmahaṃ viṣṇo mahābuddhiparākramam..
bhūtabhavyaviṣyāṃśca daityānhaṃsyapi hūṃkṛtaiḥ.. 32.146 ..
“I know you, O Viṣṇu, to possess great intellect and valour; / you can kill even past, present, and future Daityas with mere roars.
1.4.30.147
tvameva haṃtā daityānāṃ devānāṃ paripālakaḥ..
dharmasaṃsthāpakaśca tvameva te racitoṃ'jaliḥ.. 32.147 ..
You alone are the slayer of Daityas, the protector of the gods, / and the establisher of righteousness; reverent salutation is made to you.
1.4.30.148
kṣaṇārdhaṃ paśya me vīryaṃ bhāskaro lohitāyate..
evaṃ praṇamya skandena vāsudevaḥ prasāditaḥ.. 32.148 ..
"Behold my valor for half a moment; the sun is turning red."
Having bowed thus, Skanda propitiated Vāsudeva.
1.4.30.149
viroṣo'bhūttamāliṃgya vacanaṃ keśavo'bravīt..
sanāthastvadya dharmo'yaṃ surāścaiva tvayā guha.. 32.149 ..
Free from anger, Keśava embraced him and spoke these words:
"Today, Guha, this dharma and the gods have found a protector in you.
1.4.30.150
smarātmānaṃ yadarthaṃ tvamutpanno'si maheśvarāt..
sādhūnāṃ pālanārthāya duṣṭasaṃharaṇāya ca..
suraviprakṛte janma jīvitaṃ ca mahātmanām.. 32.150 ..
Remember yourself, and the purpose for which you were born from Maheśvara:
for the protection of the virtuous and the destruction of the wicked.
The birth and life of noble souls is for the sake of the gods and brahmins.
1.4.30.151
rudrasya devyā gaṃgāyāḥ kṛttikānāṃ ca tejasā..
svāhāvahneśca jātastvaṃ tattejaḥ saphalīkuru..
sādhūnāṃ ca kṛte yasya dhanaṃ vīryaṃ ca saṃpadaḥ.. 32.151 ..
You were born from the fiery energy of Rudra, of the Goddess, of Gaṅgā, of the Kṛttikās,
and of Svāhā and Agni. Make that fiery energy fruitful!
He whose wealth, valor, and riches are for the sake of the virtuous—
1.4.30.152
saphalaṃ tasya tatsarvaṃ nānyathā rudranaṃdana.. 32.152 ..
all of that becomes fruitful for him, not otherwise, O son of Rudra!
1.4.30.153
adya dharmaśca devāśca gāvaḥ sādhyāśca brāhmaṇāḥ..
naṃdaṃtu tava vīryeṇa pradarśaya nijaṃ balam.. 32.153 ..
Today, let dharma, the gods, cows, the Sādhyas, and the brahmins
rejoice through your valor! Display your own strength!"
1.4.30.154
..skanda uvāca..
yā gatiḥ śivatyāgena tvattyāgena ca keśava..
tāṃ gatiṃ prāpnuyāṃ kṣipraṃ hanmi cenna hi tārakam.. 32.154 ..
Skanda said:
"May I quickly attain that fate which comes from abandoning Śiva
and abandoning you, Keśava, if I do not slay Tāraka!
1.4.30.155
yā gatiḥ śrutityāgena sādhvī bhāryātipīḍanāt..
sādhūnāṃ ca parityāgādvṛthā jīvitasādhanāt..
niṣṭhurasya gatiryā ca tāṃ gatiṃ yāmi keśava.. 32.155 ..
The fate that comes from abandoning the Veda, from tormenting a virtuous wife,
from abandoning the righteous, and from maintaining life in vain—
and the fate that belongs to a cruel person, to that fate let me go, O Keśava!"
1.4.30.156
ityukte sumahānnādaḥ saṃprajajñe divaukasām..
praśaśaṃsurguhaṃ kecitkecinnārāyaṇaṃ prabhum.. 32.156 ..
When this was spoken, a great roar arose among the gods.
Some praised Guha, and some praised Lord Nārāyaṇa.
1.4.30.157
tatastārkṣaayaṃ samārudya haristasminmahāraṇe..
tāmracūḍaṃ mahāsena stārakaṃ cāpyadhāvatām.. 32.157 ..
Then, mounting Garuḍa, Hari in that great battle,
and Mahāsena, [mounting] his cock-crested bird, both rushed against Tāraka.
1.4.30.158
lohitāṃbarasaṃvīto lohitasragvibhūṣaṇaḥ..
lohitākṣo mahābāhurhiraṇyakavacaḥ prabhuḥ.. 32.158 ..
Clad in red garments, adorned with red garlands and ornaments,
red-eyed, mighty-armed, the Lord wore golden armor.
1.4.30.159
bhujena tolayañchaktiṃ sarvabhūtāni kampayan..
prāpya taṃ tārakaṃ prāha mahāseno hasanniva.. 32.159 ..
Poising the spear with his arm, making all creatures tremble,
approaching that Tāraka, Mahāsena spoke as if laughing:
1.4.30.160
tiṣṭhatiṣṭha sudurbuddhe jīvitaṃ te mayi sthitam..
suhṛṣṭaḥ kriyatāṃ loko durlabhaḥ sarvasiddhidaḥ.. 32.160 ..
"Halt, halt, you evil-minded one! Your life now rests in my hands!
Let the world, hard to attain and the granter of all perfections, be made exceedingly joyful!
1.4.30.161
yatte suniṣṭhuratvaṃ ca dharme deveṣu goṣu ca..
tasya te praharāmyadya smara śastraṃ suśikṣitam.. 32.161 ..
For that extreme cruelty of yours toward dharma, the gods, and cows,
I strike you today! Remember your well-practiced weapons!"
1.4.30.162
evamukte guhenātha nivṛttasyāsya bhārata..
tārakasya śirodeśātkāpi nārī viniryayau.. 32.162 ..
When this was said by Guha, O Bhārata, as he turned back,
there emerged from the region of Tāraka's head a certain woman,
1.4.30.163
tejasā bhāsayaṃtī tamadha ūrdhvaṃ diśo daśa..
dṛṣṭvā nārīṃ guhaḥ prāha kāsi kasmācca nirgatā.. 32.163 ..
illuminating him, the lower and upper realms, and the ten directions with her radiance.
Seeing that woman, Guha said: "Who are you, and why have you come forth?"
1.4.30.164
..nāryuvāca..
ahaṃ śaktirguhākhyātā bhūtaleṣu sadā sthitā..
anena daityarājena mahatā tapasārjjitā.. 32.164 ..
The woman said:
"I am the Power (Śakti), O Guha, celebrated as ever-dwelling on the earth.
I was acquired by this king of daityas through great austerity.
1.4.30.165
sureṣu sarveṣu vasāmi cāhaṃ vipreṣu śāstrārtharateṣu cāham..
sādhvīṣu nārīṣu tathā vasāmi vinā guṇānnāsmi vasāmi kutracit.. 32.165 ..
I dwell in all the gods, and I dwell in brahmins devoted to the meaning of the scriptures;
I dwell likewise in virtuous women; without good qualities I dwell nowhere.
1.4.30.166
tadasya puṇyasaṃghasya saṃprāptodyāvadhirguha..
tadenaṃ tyajya yāsyāmi jahyenaṃ viśvahetave.. 32.166 ..
Now the limit of his heap of merit has arrived, O Guha;
therefore, abandoning him, I depart. Slay him for the sake of the universe!"
1.4.30.167
tasyāṃ tato nirgatāyāṃ daityaśīrṣaṃ vyakampayat..
kaṃpitaṃ cāsya taddehaṃ gatavīryo'bhavatkṣaṇāt.. 32.167 ..
When she had thus departed, the daitya's head shook,
and his body trembled; in an instant he was bereft of his valor.
1.4.30.168
etasminnaṃtare śaktiṃ so'kṣipadgirijātmajaḥ..
ulkājvālā vimuñcaṃtīmatisūryāgnisaprabhām.. 32.168 ..
At that moment, the son of the mountain's daughter hurled his spear,
which released fiery trails of meteors, blazing brighter than the sun and fire,
1.4.30.169
kalpāṃbhodhisamunnādāṃ didhakṣaṃtīṃ jagadyathā..
tārakasyāṃtakālāya abhāgyasya daśāmiva.. 32.169 ..
roaring like the ocean of the cosmic dissolution, as if wishing to burn up the universe,
for the time of Tāraka's end, like the state of misfortune [personified],
1.4.30.170
dāraṇīṃ parvatānāṃ ca sarvasattvabalādhikām..
utkṣipya tāṃ vinadyoccairamuñcatkupito guhaḥ.. 32.170 ..
cleaving mountains, surpassing the strength of all living beings;
lifting it and roaring loudly, the enraged Guha released it,
1.4.30.171
dharmaścedbalavām̐lloke dharmo jayati cetsadā..
tena satyena daityoyaṃ pralayaṃ yātvitīrayan.. 32.171 ..
declaring: "If dharma is strong in the world, and if dharma always triumphs,
by that truth let this daitya go to destruction!"
1.4.30.172
sā kumārabhujotsṛṣṭā durnivāryā durāsadā..
vibheda hṛdayaṃ cāsya bhittvā ca dharaṇiṃ gatā.. 32.172 ..
Hurled from Kumāra's arm, irresistible and unapproachable,
it split his heart and, piercing through, entered the earth.
1.4.30.173
niḥsṛtya jalakallolapūrvikā skaṃdamāyayau..
sa ca saṃtāḍitaḥ śaktyā vibhinnahṛdayosuraḥ..
nādayanvasudhāṃ sarvāṃ papātāyomukho mṛtaḥ.. 32.173 ..
Emerging again preceded by surges of water, it returned to Skanda.
And struck by the spear, his heart split open,
making the whole earth resound, the iron-faced asura fell down dead.
1.4.30.174
evaṃ pratāpya trailokyaṃ nirjitya bahuśaḥ surān..
mahāraṇe kumāreṇa nihataḥ pārtha tārakaḥ.. 32.174 ..
Having thus tormented the three worlds and repeatedly vanquished the gods,
Tāraka was slain in the great battle by Kumāra, O Pārtha.
1.4.30.175
etasminnihate daitye praharṣaṃ viśvamāyayau.. 32.175 ..
When this daitya was slain, the universe attained great joy.
1.4.30.176
vavurvātāstathā puṇyāḥ suprabhobhūddivākaraḥ..
jajvaluścāgnayaḥ śāṃtāḥ śāṃtā digjanitasvanāḥ.. 32.176 ..
Holy breezes blew, the sun became brightly radiant,
the fires burned peacefully, and the sounds born of the quarters grew calm.
1.4.30.177
tataḥ punaḥ skaṃdamāha prahṛṣṭaḥ keśavo'rihā..
skaṃdaskaṃda mahābāho bāṇonāma balātmajaḥ.. 32.177 ..
Then Keśava, the slayer of foes, filled with joy, spoke again to Skanda:
"Skanda, Skanda, mighty-armed one! There is a son of Bali named Bāṇa;
1.4.30.178
krauṃcaparvatamādāya devasaṃghānprabādhate..
so'dhunā te bhayādvīra palāyitvā nagaṃ gataḥ..
jahi taṃ pāpasaṃkalpaṃ krauṃcasthaṃ śaktivegataḥ.. 32.178 ..
taking Mount Krauñca, he harasses the hosts of gods.
Now, out of fear of you, O hero, having fled he has gone to that mountain.
Slay that evil-minded one who stays on Krauñca with the speed of your spear!"
1.4.30.179
tataḥ krauṃcaṃ mahātejā nānāvyālavināditam..
śaktyā bibheda bahubhirvṛkṣairjīvaiśca saṃkulam.. 32.179 ..
Then he of great fiery energy, with his spear, split Krauñca,
which was echoing with various beasts of prey and crowded with many trees and living creatures.
1.4.30.180
tatra vyālasahasrāṇi daityakoṭyayutaṃ tathā..
dadāha bāṇāṃ ca giraṃ bhittvā śaktirmahāravā.. 32.180 ..
There, the spear with its mighty sound burned thousands of wild beasts,
tens of millions of daityas, and Bāṇa, splitting the mountain.
1.4.30.181
adyāpi chidraṃ tatpārtha krauṃcasya parivartate.. 32.181 ..
Even today, O Pārtha, that cleft in Krauñca remains,
1.4.30.182
yena haṃsāśca krauṃcāśca mānasāya prayāṃti ca..
hatvā bāṇaṃ mahāśaktiḥ punaḥ skaṃdaṃ samāgatā..
pratyāyāti manaḥ sādhorāhṛtaṃ prahitaṃ tathā.. 32.182 ..
through which swans and curlews fly to Mānasa.
Having slain Bāṇa, the mighty spear returned again to Skanda,
just as a virtuous man's mind, sent out and brought back, returns.
1.4.30.183
tato harīṃdrapramukhāḥ pratuṣṭuvurnanṛtuśca raṃbhāpramukhā varāṃganāḥ..
vādyāni sarvāṇi ca vādayaṃtastaṃ sādhusādhvityamarā jagurbhuśam.. 32.183 ..
Then the gods led by Hari and Indra sang praises, and the foremost apsarases led by Rambhā danced;
playing all kinds of musical instruments, the immortals chanted repeatedly, "Well done! Well done!"
