brahmādikīṭaparyantaṃ kimeva kliśyate jagat.. 46.6 ..

evaṃvidhena saṃsāracāritreṇa vimohitāḥ..
sthānāṃ taraṃ na yāsyāmi bhokṣye pāsyāmi nodakam.. 46.10 ..

sa evaṃ vimṛśanneva naṃdabhadraḥ svayaṃ sthitaḥ.. 46.11 ..

naṃdabhadramuvācedaṃ kṛcchrātsaṃstabhya bālakaḥ.. 46.13 ..
extremely emaciated, suffering from ulcerated leprosy, swooning at every step. / Steadying himself with difficulty, the boy said this to Nandabhadra:
1.4.44.14
aho surūpasarvāṃga kasmādduḥkhī bhavānapi..
tatosya kāraṇaṃ sarvaṃ vyācaṣṭa naṃdabhadrakaḥ.. 46.14 ..

1.4.44.15

tadaho bhārataṃ khaṃḍaṃ satyāyuṣi tyajeddhi kaḥ..
ahameva dṛḍho manye pitṛbhyāṃ yo vivarjitaḥ.. 46.17 ..

śarīraṃ nīrujaṃ cenme bhavedapi kathaṃcana.. 46.19 ..

iṃdriyāṇi vaśe yasya śarīraṃ ca dṛḍhaṃ bhavet.. 46.20 ..
at every single moment I would perform that which is enjoyed in age after age! / He whose senses are under control and whose body is firm,

śokasthānasahasrāṇi harṣasthānaśatāni ca.. 46.21 ..
if he too desires something else, who else could be more mindless than he? / A thousand grounds for sorrow and a hundred grounds for joy

divase divase mūḍhamāvaśaṃti na paṃḍitam..
na hi jñānaviruddheṣu bahvapāyeṣu karmasu.. 46.22 ..
overtake the fool day after day, but not the learned man. / For the wise like you do not attach themselves to actions
1.4.44.23

aṣṭāṃgāṃ buddhimāhuryāṃ sarvāśreyovighātinīma.. 46.23 ..
that are opposed to knowledge, full of danger, and destructive at the root. / They speak of eightfold intellect, which destroys all misfortune;

śrutismṛtyaviruddhā sā buddhistvayyasti nirmalā..
atha kṛcchreṣu durgeṣu vyāpatsu svajanasya ca.. 46.24 ..
that pure intellect, not contrary to the Śruti and Smṛti, is in you. / Even in difficulties, dangers, and calamities of one's own people,
1.4.44.25
śārīramānasairduḥkhairna sīdaṃti bhavadvidhāḥ..
nāprāpyamabhivāṃchaṃti naṣṭaṃ necchaṃti śocitum.. 46.25 ..
those like you do not despair with bodily and mental sorrows; / they do not crave the unobtainable, nor do they wish to grieve over what is lost.
1.4.44.26
āpatsu ca na muhyaṃti narāḥ paṃḍitabuddhayaḥ..
manodehasamutthābhyāṃ duḥkhābhyāmarpitaṃ jagat.. 46.26 ..
And men of learned intellect are not bewildered in calamities. / The world is afflicted by sufferings arising from both mind and body.
1.4.44.27
tayorvyāsasamāsābhyāṃ śamopāyamimaṃ śrṛṇu..
vyādheraniṣṭasaṃsparśācchramādiṣṭavisarjanāt.. 46.27 ..
Hear this method for pacifying the two, in detail and in brief: / From disease, from contact with the disagreeable, from exertion, and from separation from what is agreeable,
1.4.44.28
caturbhiḥ kāraṇairduḥkhaṃ śīrīraṃ mānasaṃ ca yat..
mānasaṃ cāpyapriyasya saṃyogaḥ priyavarjanam.. 46.28 ..
arises suffering through four causes, both bodily and mental; / and the mental [suffering consists of] union with the unloved and separation from the loved.
1.4.44.29
dviprakāraṃ mahākaṣṭaṃ dvayoretadudāhṛtam..
mānasena hi duḥkhena śarīramupatapyate.. 46.29 ..
This twofold great distress is declared of the two; / for indeed, the body is tormented by mental suffering,
1.4.44.30
ayaḥpiṃḍena taptena kuṃbhasaṃsthamivodakam..
tadāśu prati kārācca satataṃ ca vivarjanāt.. 46.30 ..
like water in a pot by a heated lump of iron. / Therefore, by prompt remedy and constant avoidance,
1.4.44.31
vyādherādheśca praśamaḥ kriyāyogadvayena tu..
mānasaṃ śamayettasmājjñānenāgnimivāṃbunā.. 46.31 ..
the pacification of bodily disease and mental anguish is achieved through the twofold application of action. / Therefore, one should pacify the mind with knowledge, as fire is quenched with water.
1.4.44.32
praśāṃte mānase hyasya śārīramupaśāmti..
manaso duḥkhamūlaṃ tu sneha ityupalabhyate.. 46.32 ..
For when the mind is calmed, his bodily [affliction] also subsides. / Attachment is known to be the root of mental suffering.
1.4.44.33
snehācca sajjano nityaṃ janturduḥkhamupaiti ca..
snehamūlāni duḥkhāni snehajāni bhāyāni ca.. 46.33 ..
And through attachment, an embodied being constantly experiences suffering. / Sufferings have their root in attachment, and fears are born of attachment;
1.4.44.34
śokaharṣau tathāyāsaḥ sarvaṃ snehātpravartate.. 46.34 ..
grief, joy, and likewise weariness—all arise from attachment.
1.4.44.35
snehātkaraṇarāgaśca prajajñe vaiṣayastathā..
aśreyaskāvubhāvatau pūrvastatra guruḥ smṛtaḥ.. 46.35 ..
From attachment also arises attachment to the senses and to sense-objects; / both of these are detrimental, and of the two, the former is considered the weightier.
1.4.44.36
tyāgī tasmānna duḥkhī syānnarvairo niravagrahaḥ..
atyāgī janmamaraṇe prāpnotīha punaḥpunaḥ.. 46.36 ..
Therefore, one who renounces will not suffer, being free of enmity and free of constraint; / but one who does not renounce incurs birth and death again and again in this world.
1.4.44.37
tasmātsnehaṃ na lipsena mitrebhyo dhanasaṃcayāt..
svaśarīrasamutthaṃ ca jñānena vinirvatayet.. 46.37 ..
Therefore, one should not seek attachment from friends or from hoarding wealth; / and that which arises from one's own body, one should dispel with knowledge.
1.4.44.38
jñānānviteṣu siddheṣu śāstrūjñeṣu kṛtātmasu..
na teṣu sajjate snehaḥ padmapatreṣvivodakam.. 46.38 ..
In those endowed with knowledge, the perfected, the knowers of the scriptures, the self-controlled, / attachment does not cling to them, just as water does not cling to lotus leaves.
1.4.44.39
rāgābhibhūtaḥ puruṣaḥ kāmena parikṛṣyate..
icchā saṃjāyate cāsya tatastṛṣṇā pravardhate.. 46.39 ..
A man overcome by passion is dragged along by desire; / and longing is born in him, from which craving expands.
1.4.44.40
tṛṣṇā hi sarvapāpiṣṭhā nityodvegakarī matā..
adharmabahulā caiva ghorarūpānubaṃdhinī.. 46.40 ..
Craving is indeed considered the most sinful of all, always producing agitation; / it abounds in unrighteousness and is attended by terrible consequences.
1.4.44.41
yā dustyajā durmatibhiryā na jīryataḥ..
yāsau prāṇāṃtiko rogastāṃ tṛṣṇāṃ tyajataḥ sukham.. 46.41 ..
That which is hard for the evil-minded to abandon, which does not age [even as one] ages, / which is a fatal disease—for one who abandons that craving, there is happiness.
1.4.44.42
anādyaṃtā tu sā tṛṣṇā hyaṃtardehagatā nṛṇām..
vināśayati saṃbhūtā lohaṃ lohamalo yathā.. 46.42 ..
That craving, having no beginning or end, residing within the bodies of men, / destroys them once born, just as rust destroys iron.
1.4.44.43
yathaivaidhaḥ samutthena vahninā nāśamṛcchati..
tathā'kṛtātmā lobena svotpannena vinaśyati.. 46.43 ..
Just as firewood meets destruction by the fire that arises from itself, / so an undisciplined person is destroyed by the greed that arises from himself.
1.4.44.44
tasmāllobho na kartavyaḥ śarīre cātmabaṃdhuṣu..
prāpteṣu va na hṛṣyeta nāśo vāpi na śocayet.. 46.44 ..
Therefore, greed should not be harbored toward the body or toward one's kinsmen; / nor should one rejoice when they are obtained, nor grieve when they are lost.
1.4.44.45
..naṃdabhadra uvāca..
aho bāla na bālastvaṃ mato me tvāṃ namāmyaham..
tvadvākyairatitṛpto'haṃ tvāṃ tu prakṣyāmi kiṃcana.. 46.45 ..
Nandabhadra said: / Ah, boy, you are not considered a boy by me! I bow to you. / I am greatly satisfied by your words, but I would ask you something.
1.4.44.46
kāmakrodhāvahaṃkāramiṃdriyāṇi ca mānavāḥ..
niṃdaṃti tatra me nityaṃ vivakṣeyaṃ prajāyate.. 46.46 ..
Men constantly condemn desire, anger, egoism, and the senses; / concerning that, this question arises in me:
1.4.44.47
ahameṣa mamedaṃ ca kāryamīdṛśakastvaham..
ityādi cātmavijñānamahaṃkāra iti smṛtaḥ.. 46.47 ..
‘I am this; this is mine; and I must do such-and-such’— / this kind of consciousness of self is called egoism.
1.4.44.48
parihāryaḥ ya cettaṃ ca vinonmattaḥ prakīryate..
kāmo'bhilāṣa ityuktaḥ saṃ cetpuṃsā vivarjyate.. 46.48 ..
If it is to be abandoned, one without it is proclaimed to be insane. / Desire is declared to be longing; if that is abandoned by a man,
1.4.44.49
kathaṃ svargo mumukṣā vā sādhyate dṛṣadā yathā..
krodho vā yadi saṃtyājyastataḥ śatrukṣayaḥ katham.. 46.49 ..
how can heaven or liberation be attained, [any more than] by a stone? / Or if anger is to be renounced, how then can enemies be destroyed?
1.4.44.50
bāhyānāmāṃtarāṇāṃ vā vinā taṃ tṛṇavadviduḥ..
iṃdriyāṇi nigṛhyaiva duṣṭānīti nipīḍayet.. 46.50 ..
Without it, they consider [all beings], whether external or internal, as mere grass. / If one simply restrains the senses and torments them because they are corrupt,
1.4.44.51
kathaṃ syāddharmaśravaṇaṃ kathaṃ vā jīvanaṃ bhavet..
etasminme mano viddhaṃkhidyate'jñānasaṃkaṭe.. 46.51 ..
how could hearing the Dharma take place, or how could there be living? / In this dilemma of ignorance, my mind is pierced and distressed.
1.4.44.52
tathā kasmādidaṃ sṛṣṭaṃ jaḍaṃ viśvaṃ cidātmanā..
evaṃ yadbahudhā kleśaḥ pīḍyate hā kutastvidam.. 46.52 ..
Likewise, why was this insentient universe created by the conscious Self? / In this way, when one is afflicted by diverse suffering, alas, from where does this come?
1.4.44.53
..bāla uvāca..
samyagetadyathā pṛṣṭaṃ yatra muhyaṃti jaṃtavaḥ..
śrṛṇvekāgramanā bhūtvā jñātaṃ dvaipāyanānmayā.. 46.53 ..
The boy said: / This has been rightly asked by you, regarding that wherein creatures are bewildered. / Listen with a one-pointed mind to what was learned by me from Dvaipāyana.
1.4.44.54
prakṛtiḥ puruṣaścaiva anādī śrṛṇumaḥ purā..
sādharmyeṇāvatiṣṭhete sṛṣṭeḥ prāgajarāmarau.. 46.54 ..
We hear that of old, Prakṛti and Puruṣa are beginningless; / ageless and immortal, the two stood in equal nature before creation.
1.4.44.55
tataḥ kālasvabāvābhyāṃ preritā prakṛtiḥ purā..
puṃsaḥ saṃyogamaicchatsā tadabhāvātprakupyata.. 46.55 ..
Then of old, Prakṛti, impelled by time and inherent nature, / desired union with Puruṣa; in the absence of that, she became agitated.
1.4.44.56
tatastamomayī sā ca līlayā devavīkṣitā..
rājasī samabhūddūṣṭā sāttvikī samajāyata.. 46.56 ..
Then she, who was made of tamas, looked upon playfully by God, / became rājasika, and being purified, became sāttvika.
1.4.44.57
evaṃ triguṇatāṃ yātā prakṛtirdevadarśanāt..
tāṃ samāsthāya paramastrimūrtiḥ samajāyata.. 46.57 ..
Having thus attained the state of the three guṇas from the gaze of God, / the Supreme One, taking resort in her, became the three forms (Trimūrti).
1.4.44.58
tasyāḥ proccāraṇārthaṃ ca pravṛttaḥ svāṃśatastataḥ..
asūyata mahattattvaṃ triguṇaṃ tadvidurbudhāḥ.. 46.58 ..
And proceeding from his own portion for the sake of her evolution, / he brought forth the principle of the cosmic intellect (mahat-tattva) endowed with the three guṇas; so the wise know it.
1.4.44.59
ahaṃkāra stato jātaḥ sattvarājasatāmasaḥ..
tamo rajastvamāpadya rajaḥ sattvaguṇaṃ nayet.. 46.59 ..
From that arose egoism, sāttvika, rājasika, and tāmasika. / Bringing tamas to rajas, one should lead rajas to the quality of sattva.
1.4.44.60
śuddhasattve tato mokṣaṃ pravadaṃti manīṣiṇaḥ..
tamaso rajasasta smātsaṃśuddhyarthaṃ ca sarvaśaḥ.. 46.60 ..
The wise declare liberation to be in pure sattva. / Therefore, for the complete purification of tamas and rajas,
1.4.44.61
jīvātmasaṃjñānsvīyāṃśānvyabhajatparameśvaraḥ..
tāvaṃtaste ca kṣetrjñā dehā yāvaṃta eva hi.. 46.61 ..
the Supreme Lord divided his own portions, which are called individual souls (jīvātman). / As many as there are bodies, so many indeed are those knowers of the field (kṣetrajña),
1.4.44.62
niḥsaraṃti yathā lohāttaptalliṃgātsphuliṃgakāḥ..
tanmātrabhūtasargoyamahaṃkārāttu tāmasāt.. 46.62 ..
just as sparks emerge from a heated lump of iron. / But this creation of the subtle elements and gross elements arose from the tāmasika egoism,
1.4.44.63
iṃdriyāṇāṃ sāttvikācca triguṇāni ca tānyapi..
etaiḥ saṃsiddhayaṃtreṇa saccidānandavīkṣaṇāt.. 46.63 ..
and that of the senses arose from the sāttvika [egoism]; and these also possess the three guṇas. / Through the instrument fully fashioned by these, through contemplation of Being-Consciousness-Bliss,
1.4.44.64
rajastamaśca śodhyaṃte sattvenaiva mumukṣubhiḥ..
tasmātkāmaṃ ca krodhaṃ ca iṃdriyāṇāṃ pravartanam.. 46.64 ..
rajas and tamas are purified by sattva alone by those who seek liberation. / Therefore, directing desire, anger, and the operation of the senses,
1.4.44.65
ahaṃkāraṃ ca saṃsevya sāttvikīṃ siddhimaśnute..
rājasāstāmasāścaiva tyājyāḥ kāmādayastvamī.. 46.65 ..
and utilizing egoism, one attains sāttvika perfection. / Those [passions] such as desire that are rājasika and tāmasika should indeed be abandoned;
1.4.44.66
sāttvikāḥ sarvadā sevyāḥ saṃsāravijigīṣubhiḥ..
guṇatrayasya vakṣyāmi saṃkṣepāllakṣaṇaṃ tava.. 46.66 ..
the sāttvika ones are always to be cultivated by those who wish to conquer worldly existence. / I will explain to you in brief the characteristics of the three guṇas:
1.4.44.67
sāstrābhyāsastato jñānaṃ śaucamiṃdriyanigrahaḥ..
dharmakriyātmaciṃtā ca sāttvikaṃ guṇa lakṣaṇam.. 46.67 ..
Study of scriptures, then knowledge, purity, restraint of the senses, / righteous action, and contemplation of the Self—these are the characteristics of the sāttvika guṇa.
1.4.44.68
anyāyena dhanādānaṃ taṃdrī nāstikyameva ca..
krauryaṃ ca yācakādyaṃ ca tāmasaṃ guṇalakṣaṇam.. 46.68 ..
Acquisition of wealth through unjust means, sloth, lack of faith in the hereafter, / cruelty, and living by begging and the like—these are the characteristics of the tāmasika guṇa.
1.4.44.69
tasmādbuddhimukaistvataiḥ sāttvikairdevatāṃ bhajet..
rājasairmānavatvaṃ ca tāmasaiḥ sthāṇuyonitā.. 46.69 ..
Therefore, with these sāttvika [faculties] led by the intellect, one should worship the deity. / Through rājasika [qualities] one attains human birth, and through tāmasika ones, the state of immobile beings.
1.4.44.70
buddhyādyaireva muktiḥ syādetaireva ca yātanā.. 46.70 ..
Through intellect and the rest [when purified], liberation ensues; and through these very same [when impure], torment [results].
1.4.44.71
amīṣāṃ cāpya bhāve vai na kiṃcidupapadyate..
kalādo hi kalādīnāṃ suvarṇaṃ śodhayedyathā.. 46.71 ..
And in the absence of these [guṇas], nothing indeed comes into being. / For just as a goldsmith purifies gold of impurities and the like,
1.4.44.72
tathā rajastamaścaiva saṃśodhye sāttvikairguṇaiḥ..
asmādeva guṇānāṃ ca samavāyādanādijāt.. 46.72 ..
even so must rajas and tamas be purified by the qualities of sattva. / And solely from this conjunction of the qualities, born without beginning,
1.4.44.73
sukhino duḥkhinaścaiva prāṇinaḥ śāstradarśinaḥ..
aṣṭāviṃśatilakṣaiśca guṇamekaikamīśvaraḥ.. 46.73 ..
beings who observe the treatises are happy and unhappy. / And the Lord divided each single quality
1.4.44.74
vyabhajaccaturā śītilakṣāstā jīvayonayaḥ..
sakāśānmanasastadvadātmanaḥ prabhavaṃti hi.. 46.74 ..
into twenty-eight hundred thousand [parts]; these are eighty-four hundred thousand wombs of living beings. / In that manner, from the vicinity of the mind, they arise from the Self;
1.4.44.75
īśvarāṃśāśca te sarve mohitāḥ prākṛtairguṇaiḥ..
kleśānāsādayaṃtyeva yathaivādhikṛtā vibhoḥ.. 46.75 ..
and all of them, being portions of the Lord, are deluded by the qualities of Prakṛti. / They indeed encounter afflictions, just as those commissioned by the all-pervading Lord do.
1.4.44.76
annānāṃ payasāṃ cāpi jīvānāṃ cātha śreyase..
mānuṣyamāhustattvajñāḥ śivabhāvena bhāvitam.. 46.76 ..
For the highest good of food, water, and living beings, / the knowers of truth say that human existence is transformed by the being of Śiva."
1.4.44.77
..naṃdabhadra uvāca..
evametatkiṃ tu bhūyaḥ prakṣyāmyetanmahāmate..
īśvarāḥ sarvadātāraḥ pūjyaṃte yaiśca devatāḥ.. 46.77 ..
Nandabhadra said: / "So it is. But again I shall ask this, O great-minded one: / the deities who are all-bestowing lords are worshipped by men;
1.4.44.78
svabhaktāṃstānna duḥkhebhyaḥ kasmādrakṣaṃti mānavān..
viśeṣātkepi dṛśyaṃte duḥkhamagnāḥ surānratāḥ.. 46.78 ..
why do they not protect those devoted to them from sufferings? / In particular, some who are devoted to the gods are seen plunged in suffering.
1.4.44.79
iti me muhyate buddhistvaṃ vā kiṃ bāla manyase.. 46.79 ..
Thus my intellect is bewildered; or what do you think, O boy?"
1.4.44.80
..bāla uvāca..
aśuciśca śuciścāpi devabhakto dvidhā smṛtaḥ..
karmaṇā manasā vācā tadrato bhakta ucyate.. 46.80 ..
The boy said: / "The devotee of a deity is remembered as twofold: impure and pure. / One who is devoted to him in deed, mind, and speech is called a devotee.
1.4.44.81
aśucirdevatāścaiva yadā pūjayate naraḥ..
tadā bhūtānyā viśaṃti sa ca muhyati tatkṣaṇāt.. 46.81 ..
When an impure man worships the deities, / then spirits enter him, and he is bewildered in that very moment.
1.4.44.82
