1.4.46.1
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.46.2
athātaḥ saṃpravakṣyāmi somanāthamahiṃ sphuṭam ..
“Now, therefore, I shall clearly declare the greatness of Somanātha,
1.4.46.3
śṛṇvanyāṃ kīrta yiṣyāmi pāpamokṣamavāpnuyāt .. 1 ..
hearing which as I recount it, one attains release from sin.
1.4.46.4
purā tretāyuge pārtha cauḍadeśasamudbhavau ..
Formerly in the Tretā age, O son of Pṛthā, born in the country of Cauḍa,
1.4.46.5
ūrjayaṃtaśca prāleyo viprāvāstāṃ mahādyutī .. 2 ..
there were two brahmins of great splendor, Ūrjayanta and Prāleya.
1.4.46.6
tāvekadā purāṇārthe ślokamekamapaśyatām ..
Once, among the contents of the Purāṇas, they saw a single verse.
1.4.46.7
taṃ dṛṣṭvā sarvaśāstrajñāvāstāṃ kaṃṭakitatvacau .. 3 ..
Seeing it, knowing all scriptures, their skin bristled with excitement:
1.4.46.8
prabhāsādyāni tīrthāni pulastyāyāha padmabhūḥ .
na yaistatrāplutaṃ caiva kiṃ taistīrthamupāsitam .. 4 ..
‘The lotus-born [Brahmā] said to Pulastya: “Regarding the sacred fords beginning with Prabhāsa, / what sacred ford has been worshipped by those who have not bathed there?”’
1.4.46.9
iti ślokaṃ paṭhitvā tau punaḥpunarabhiṣṭutam ..
Having read this praised verse again and again,
1.4.46.10
tarhyeva ca prabhāsāya niḥsṛtau snātumuttamau .. 5 ..
the two excellent men set out at that very moment for Prabhāsa to bathe.
1.4.46.11
tau vanāni nadīścaiva vyatikramya śanaiḥśanaiḥ ..
Gradually crossing forests and rivers,
1.4.46.12
maharṣigaṇasaṃkīrṇāmuttīṇau narmadāṃ śivām .. 6 ..
the two crossed the auspicious Narmadā, crowded with hosts of great sages.
1.4.46.13
guptakṣetrasya māhātmyaṃ mahīsāgarasaṃgamam ..
[Knowing] the greatness of the hidden sacred field, the confluence of the Mahī and the ocean,
1.4.46.14
tatra snātvā prabhāsāya tanmadhyena pratasthatuḥ .. 7 ..
having bathed there, they departed for Prabhāsa right through it.
1.4.46.15
tato mārgasya śūnyatvāttṛṭkṣudhāpīḍitau bhṛśam ..
Then, because the path was desolate, intensely afflicted by thirst and hunger,
1.4.46.16
āstāṃ vicetanau viprau siddhaliṃgasamīpataḥ .. 8 ..
the two brahmins were senseless near Siddhaliṅga.
1.4.46.17
siddhanāthaṃ namaskṛtya saṃprayātau sudhairyataḥ ..
Having bowed to Siddhanātha, they set forth with great fortitude.
1.4.46.18
kṣudhāvegena tīvreṇa tṛṣā madhyārkatāpitau .. 9 ..
Scorched by the midday sun, through the fierce assault of hunger and through thirst,
1.4.46.19
sahasā patitau bhūmau sthūṇapādau vimūrchitau ..
they suddenly fell to the ground, paralyzed in their limbs, fallen unconscious.
1.4.46.20
tato muhūrtātprāleya ūrjayaṃtamabhāṣata .. 1.2.48.10 ..
Then, after a moment, Prāleya spoke to Ūrjayanta,
1.4.46.21
kiṃcidviśvasya dhairyācca sakhe kiṃ na śrutaṃ tvayā ..
recovering somewhat and taking courage: 'Friend, have you not heard?
1.4.46.22
yathā yathā vivarṇāṃgo jāyate tīrthayātrayā .. 11 ..
Just as a person's body becomes pale through pilgrimage,
1.4.46.23
tathātathā bhaveddānairdīnaḥ someśvaro haraḥ ..
so too Someśvara Hara becomes humble through gifts.'
1.4.46.24
tathā''stāṃ luṃṭhamānau tāvevamukte śrute'pi ca .. 12 ..
Though this had been spoken and heard, the two continued rolling on the ground.
1.4.46.25
luṃṭhamāno jagāmaiva prāleyaḥ kiṃcidaṃtare ..
Rolling along, Prāleya went a little distance,
1.4.46.26
utthitaṃ sahasā liṃgaṃ bhūmiṃ bhittvā sudurdṛśam .. 13 ..
and suddenly a liṅga, very hard to behold, rose up breaking through the earth.
1.4.46.27
khe vāṇī cābhavattatra puṣpavarṣapuraḥsarā ..
And in the sky a voice arose there, preceded by a shower of flowers:
1.4.46.28
prāleya tava hetostu somanāthasamaṃ phalam ..
'Prāleya, for your sake, yielding a fruit equal to Somanātha,
1.4.46.29
utthitaṃ sāgarataṭe liṃgaṃ tiṣṭhātra suvrata .. 14 ..
a liṅga has risen on the shore of the ocean. Remain here, O you of noble vows!'
1.4.46.30
.. prāleya uvāca .. ..
Prāleya said:
1.4.46.31
yadyevaṃ satyametacca tathāpyātmā prakalpitaḥ .. 15 ..
'Even if this is so and true, nevertheless my resolve was formed:
1.4.46.32
prabhāsāya prayātavyaṃ yadā'' mṛtyormayā sphuṭam ..
clearly I must journey to Prabhāsa even until death.'
1.4.46.33
tataścaivorjjayaṃto'pi mūrchābhāvālluṭhanpuraḥ .. 16 ..
Then Ūrjayanta also, rolling forward in a state of fainting,
1.4.46.34
apaśyadutthitaṃ liṃgaṃ sa caivaṃ pratyapadyata ..
saw the liṅga that had risen up, and he too understood thus.
1.4.46.35
tataḥ pratyakṣatāṃ prāpto bhavaścakre tayordṛḍhe .. 17 ..
Then Bhava, having become manifest, made their two bodies firm
1.4.46.36
dṛṣṭyā tanū tato yātau prabhāsaṃ śivasadma ca ..
by his gaze; then they went to Prabhāsa, the abode of Śiva.
1.4.46.37
tāvetau somanāthau dvau siddheśvarasamīpataḥ .. 18 ..
These are the two Somanāthas near Siddheśvara:
1.4.46.38
ūrjayaṃtaḥ pratīcyāṃ ca prāleyasyeśvaro'paraḥ ..
Ūrjayanta is in the west, and the other is the lord of Prāleya.
1.4.46.39
somakuḍāṃbhasi śanaiḥ snātvārṇavamahījale .. 19 ..
Having slowly bathed in the water of Somakuṇḍa, in the water of the ocean and the Mahī,
1.4.46.40
somanāthadvayaṃ paśyejjanmapāpātpramucyate ..
one who beholds the pair of Somanāthas is freed from the sin of birth.
1.4.46.41
brahmātra sthāpayitvā tu hāṭakeśvara saṃjñitam .. 1.2.48.20 ..
Having installed here the liṅga named Hāṭakeśvara,
1.4.46.42
mahīnagarake liṃgaṃ pātālātsumanoharam ..
which is very charming, brought from Pātāla to Mahīnagara,
1.4.46.43
tuṣṭāva devaṃ prayataḥ stutiṃ tāṃ śṛṇu pāṃḍava .. 21 ..
Brahmā devoutly praised the god. Listen to that hymn of praise, O Pāṇḍava:
1.4.46.44
namaste bhagavanrudra bhāskarāmitatejase ..
'Homage to you, O blessed Rudra, possessing the immeasurable splendor of the sun!
1.4.46.45
namo bhavāya rudrāya rasāyāṃbumayāya te .. 22 ..
Homage to Bhava, to Rudra, to the taste whose essence is water!
1.4.46.46
śarvāya kṣitirūpāya sadā surabhiṇe namaḥ ..
Homage to Śarva, who has the form of the earth and is ever fragrant!
1.4.46.47
īśāya vāyave tubhyaṃ saṃsparśāya namonamaḥ .. 23 ..
Homage, homage to you, the Lord, the wind, the sense of touch!
1.4.46.48
paśūnāṃ pataye cāpi pāvakāyātitejase ..
And [homage] to the Lord of beasts, to fire of supreme brilliance!
1.4.46.49
bhīmāya vyomarūpāya śabdamātrāya te namaḥ .. 24 ..
Homage to you, Bhīma, who have the form of space, whose essence is sound!
1.4.46.50
mahādevāya somāya amṛtāya namo'stu te ..
Homage be to you, Mahādeva, the moon, the nectar!
1.4.46.51
ugrāya yajamānāya namaste karmayogine .. 25 ..
Homage to Ugra, the sacrificer, to you, the performer of actions!'
1.4.46.52
ityevaṃ nāmabhirdivyaiḥ stava eṣa udīritaḥ ..
Thus this hymn was uttered with divine names.
1.4.46.53
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādvāpi pitāmahakṛtaṃ stavam .. 26 ..
A person who recites or hears this hymn composed by the Grandfather
1.4.46.54
hāṭakeśvaraliṃgasya nityaṃ ca prayato naraḥ ..
to the liṅga of Hāṭakeśvara, being ever devout,
1.4.46.55
aṣṭamūrteḥ sa sāyujyaṃ labhate nātra saṃśayaḥ .. 27 ..
attains union with the eight-formed Lord; of this there is no doubt.
1.4.46.56
hāṭakeśvaraliṃgaṃ ca prayato yaḥ smaredapi ..
And whoever, being devout, even remembers the liṅga of Hāṭakeśvara,
1.4.46.57
tasya syādvarado brahmā tenedaṃ sthāpitaṃ jaya .. 28 ..
to him Brahmā becomes the granter of boons, by whom this was installed, O Arjuna.
1.4.46.58
evaṃvidhāni tīrthāni mahīsāgarasaṃgame ..
Such sacred fords at the confluence of the Mahī and the ocean,
1.4.46.59
bahūni saṃti puṇyāni saṃkṣepādvarṇitāni me .. 29 ..
many and holy, have been described in brief by me.
1.4.46.60
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe kaumārikākhaṇḍe stambhatīrthamāhātmye somanāthavṛttāṃtavarṇanaṃnāmāṣṭacatvāriṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 48 ..
Thus ends the forty-eighth chapter, named 'Description of the Account of Somanātha,' in the praise of Stambhatīrtha, in the Kaumārikākhaṇḍa, in the first Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
