.. arjuna uvāca .. ..
Arjuna said:
1.4.47.2
atyadbhutāni tīrthāni liṃgāni ca mahāmune ..
'Having heard of the exceedingly wondrous sacred fords and liṅgas, O great sage,
1.4.47.3
śrutvā tava mukhāṃbhojādbhṛśaṃ me hṛṣyate manaḥ .. 1 ..
from your lotus mouth, my mind rejoices greatly.
1.4.47.4
mahīnagarakasyāpi sthāpitasya tvayā mune ..
The principal sacred fords of Mahīnagara as well,
1.4.47.5
yāni tīrthāni mukhyāni tāni varṇaya me prabho .. 2 ..
which was established by you, O sage—describe them to me, O lord!'
1.4.47.6
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.47.7
śrīmanmahīnagarake yāni tīrthāni phālguna ..
'The sacred fords that are in glorious Mahīnagara, O Phālguna,
1.4.47.8
tāni vakṣyāmi yatrāste jayā dityo raviḥ prabhuḥ .. 3 ..
I shall relate to you, where the sun, the lord Jayāditya, resides.
1.4.47.9
jayādityasya yo nāma kīrtayediha mānavaḥ ..
Whatever person here glorifies the name of Jayāditya,
1.4.47.10
sarvarogavinirmukto labhetso'pi hṛdīpsitam .. 4 ..
freed from all diseases, he too obtains the desire of his heart.
1.4.47.11
yasya saṃdarśanādeva kalyāṇairapi pūryate ..
Merely by beholding him, a faithful person is filled with auspicious blessings,
1.4.47.12
mucyate cāpyakalyāṇaiḥ śraddhāvānpārtha mānavaḥ .. 5 ..
and is freed from inauspicious things, O son of Pṛthā.
1.4.47.13
tasya devasya cotpattiṃ śṛṇu pārtha vadāmi te ..
Listen, O son of Pṛthā, I shall tell you the origin of that deity;
1.4.47.14
śṛṇvanvā kīrtayanvāpi prasādaṃ bhāskarāllabhet .. 6 ..
hearing it or reciting it, one obtains grace from the sun.
1.4.47.15
ahaṃ saṃsthāpya saṃsthānametatkālena kenacit ..
Having established this settlement, I, in the course of time,
1.4.47.16
prayāto bhāskaraṃ lokaṃ darśanārthī yadṛcchayā .. 7 ..
went at will to the realm of the sun, desiring his darśana.
1.4.47.17
sa māṃ praṇatamāsīnamabhyarcyārgheṇa bhāskaraḥ ..
Having honored me, who was bowed down and seated, with an offering of argha,
1.4.47.18
prahasanniva prāhedaṃ devo madhurayā girā .. 8 ..
the radiant god said this with a sweet voice, as if smiling:
1.4.47.19
kuta āgamyate vipra kva ca vā pratigamyate ..
'From where do you come, O brahmin, and where are you going?'
1.4.47.20
kva cāyaṃ nāradamune kālaste vihṛto'bhavat .. 9 ..
And where, O sage Nārada, has this time been spent by you?”
1.4.47.21
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.47.22
evamukto bhāskareṇa taṃ tadā prābravaṃ vacaḥ ..
Addressed thus by the Sun, I then spoke this word to him:
1.4.47.23
bhārate vihṛtaḥ khaṇḍe mahīnagarakādapi ..
“I wandered in the Bhārata section, and from Mahīnagara,
1.4.47.24
darśanārthaṃ tava vibho samāyāto'smi bhāskara .. 1.2.49.10 ..
I have arrived, O all-pervading one, O Sun, for your darśana.”
1.4.47.25
.. raviruvāca .. ..
The Sun said:
1.4.47.26
yattvayā sthāpitaṃ sthānaṃ tatra ye saṃti brāhmaṇāḥ ..
“The place that was established by you—the brahmins who are there,
1.4.47.27
teṣāṃ guṇānmama brūhi kiṃguṇā nanu te dvijāḥ .. 11 ..
tell me their qualities. Indeed, what virtues do those twice-born have?”
1.4.47.28
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.47.29
evaṃ pṛṣṭo bhagavatā punarevābravaṃ vacaḥ .. 12 ..
Questioned thus by the Lord, I spoke this word once again:
1.4.47.30
yadi tānbhoḥ praśaṃsāmi svīyānstautīti vācyatā ..
“O Lord, if I praise them, there will be the reproach: ‘He praises his own.’
1.4.47.31
niṃdāmyanarhānkasmādvā kaṣṭamevobhayatra ca .. 13 ..
Or why should I blame those who do not deserve it? There is difficulty in both cases.
1.4.47.32
athavā pāramāhātmye sati teṣāṃ mahātmanām ..
Moreover, since the majesty of those great-souled ones is supreme,
1.4.47.33
alpe kṛte varṇane syāddoṣa eva mahānmama .. 14 ..
if a meager description is made, it would indeed be a great fault on my part.
1.4.47.34
madarcitadvijeṃdrāṇāṃ yadi syācchravaṇepsutā ..
If there is a desire to hear of those foremost twice-born honored by me,
1.4.47.35
tataḥ svayaṃ vilokyāste gatvedaṃ me mataṃ rave .. 15 ..
then you should go and observe them yourself; this is my opinion, O Sun.”
1.4.47.36
iti śrutvā mama vaco ravirāsītsuvismitaḥ ..
Hearing this word of mine, the Sun was greatly astonished,
1.4.47.37
svayaṃ drakṣyāmi covāca punaḥpunaraharpatiḥ .. 16 ..
and the Lord of Day said again and again, “I shall see them myself.”
1.4.47.38
so'tha vipratanuṃ kṛtvā māṃ visarjyaiva bhāskaraḥ ..
Then, having assumed the form of a brahmin and dismissed me, the Sun,
1.4.47.39
pratapandivi yogācca prayātorṇavarodhasi .. 17 ..
blazing in the sky and through yogic power, went to the bank of the Arṇavā.
1.4.47.40
jaṭāṃ triṣavaṇasnānapiṃgalāṃ dhārayannatha ..
Bearing matted hair tawny from ritual ablutions at the three junctures of the day,
1.4.47.41
vṛddhadvijo mahātejā dadṛśe brāhmaṇairmama .. 18 ..
an elderly twice-born of great splendor was seen by my brahmins.
1.4.47.42
tato hārītapramukhāḥ praharṣotphullalocanāḥ ..
Then, their eyes wide with intense joy, headed by Hārīta,
1.4.47.43
utthāya brahmaśālāyāste dvijā dvijamādravan ..19..
rising from the hall of Vedic study, those twice-born ran toward the twice-born.
1.4.47.44
namaskṛtya dvijāgryaṃ te praharṣādidamabruvan ..1.2.49.20..
Bowing to that foremost twice-born, out of intense joy they said this:
1.4.47.45
adya no divasaḥ puṇyaḥ sthānamadyottamaṃ tvidam ..
“Today our day is auspicious; today this place is supreme,
1.4.47.46
yattvayā viprapravara svayamāgamanaṃ kṛtam .. 21 ..
since you yourself, O best of brahmins, have come here.
1.4.47.47
dhanyasya hi gṛhasthasya kṛpayaiva dvijottamāḥ ..
For solely out of compassion for a blessed householder, the best of the twice-born
1.4.47.48
ātithyaveṣeṇāyāṃti pāvanārthaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ..22..
arrive in the guise of guests for the sake of purification; of this there is no doubt.
1.4.47.49
tattvaṃ gehāni cāsmākaṃ pādacaṃkramaṇena ca ..
Therefore, by the pacing of your feet, purify our homes,
1.4.47.50
darśanādbhojanātsthānādasmābhiḥ saha pāvaya ..23..
and together with us, [purify] this place by your darśana and by taking a meal.”
1.4.47.51
.. atithiruvāca .. ..
The guest said:
1.4.47.52
bhojanaṃ dvividhaṃ viprā prākṛtaṃ paramaṃ tathā ..
“Food is of two kinds, O brahmins: the ordinary and the supreme.
1.4.47.53
tadahaṃ samyagicchāmi dattaṃ paramabhojanam ..24 ..
I properly desire the supreme food to be given to me.”
1.4.47.54
ityetadatitheḥ śrutvā hārītaḥ putramabravīt ..
Having heard this from the guest, Hārīta said to his son:
1.4.47.55
aṣṭavarṣaṃ tu kamaṭhaṃ vetsi putra dvijoditam ..25..
“Son, an eight-year-old Kamaṭha, do you understand what was spoken by the twice-born?”
1.4.47.56
..kamaṭha uvātra.. ..
Kamaṭha said:
1.4.47.57
tāta praṇamya tvāṃ vakṣye tādṛkparamabhojanam ..
“Father, having bowed to you, I will speak of such supreme food,
1.4.47.58
dvijaṃ ca tarpayiṣyāmi dattvā paramabhojanam .. ..26..
and I will satisfy the twice-born by offering the supreme food.
1.4.47.59
sutena kila jātena jāyate cānṛṇaḥ pitā..
For indeed, when a son is born, a father becomes free from debt;
1.4.47.60
satyaṃ kariṣye tadvākyaṃ saṃtarpyātithimuttamam..27..
I will make that saying true by fully satisfying the excellent guest.
1.4.47.61
bhojanaṃ dviprakāraṃ ca pravibhāgastayorayam ..
Food is of two kinds, and this is their distinction:
1.4.47.62
prākṛtaṃ procyate tvevamanyatparamabhojanam .. 28 ..
one is called the ordinary, and the other is the supreme food.
1.4.47.63
tatra yatprākṛtaṃ nāma prakṛtipramukhasya tat..
Among them, that which is called ordinary is the satisfaction of the group
1.4.47.64
caturviṃśatitattvānāṃ gaṇasyoktaṃ hi tarpaṇam .. 29 ..
of the twenty-four cosmic principles headed by Prakṛti; so it is said.
1.4.47.65
ṣaḍrasaṃ bhojanaṃ tacca paṃcabhedaṃ vadaṃti ca ..
And that food has six flavors, and they say it has five categories;
1.4.47.66
yena bhuktena tṛptaṃ syātkṣetraṃ yaddehalakṣaṇam .. 1.2.49.30 ..
by consuming it, the field characterized by the physical body is satisfied.
1.4.47.67
yathāparaṃ paraṃnāma proktaṃ paramabhojanam ..
Just as the other is called supreme, it is named supreme food;
1.4.47.68
paramaḥ procyate cātmā tasya tadbhojanaṃ bhavet .. 31 ..
the Self is called supreme, and that would be its food.
1.4.47.69
tato nānāprakārasya dharmasya śravaṇaṃ hi yat ..
Therefore, that hearing of dharma of various kinds—
1.4.47.70
tadannaṃ procyate bhoktā kṣetrajñaḥ śravaṇau mukham .. 32 ..
that is called the food; the enjoyer is the knower of the field; the two ears are the mouth.
1.4.47.71
taddāsyāmi dvijāgryāya pṛccha vipra yadicchasi ..
I will give that to the foremost twice-born. Ask, O brahmin, whatever you wish!
1.4.47.72
śaktitastarpayiṣyāmi tvāmahaṃ viprasaṃsadi .. 33 ..
According to my ability, I will satisfy you in the assembly of brahmins.”
1.4.47.73
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.47.74
kamaṭhasyaitadākarṇya so'tithirvacanaṃ mahat ..
Hearing these great words of Kamaṭha, that guest,
1.4.47.75
manasaiva praśasyāmuṃ praśnamenamathākarot .. 34 ..
praising him in his mind alone, then asked this question:
1.4.47.76
kathaṃ saṃjāyate jaṃtuḥ kathaṃ cāpi pralīyate ..
“How is a living being born, and how does it dissolve?
1.4.47.77
bhasmatāmatha saṃprāpya kva cāyaṃ prati padyate .. 35 ..
And having been reduced to ashes, where does it go?”
1.4.47.78
.. kamaṭha uvāca .. ..
Kamaṭha said:
1.4.47.79
gurave prāṅnamaskṛtya dharmāya tadanaṃtaram ..
“Having first bowed to the Guru, and next to Dharma,
1.4.47.80
chaṃdogītamamuṃ praśnaṃ śaktyā vakṣyāmi te dvija .. 36 ..
I shall answer this question sung in the Vedas according to my ability, O twice-born.
1.4.47.81
janane trividhaṃ karma heturjaṃtorbhavetkila ..
Indeed, threefold action is the cause of a living being’s birth:
1.4.47.82
puṇyaṃ pāpaṃ ca miśraṃ ca sattvarājasatāmasam .. 37 ..
meritorious, sinful, and mixed, consisting of sattva, rajas, and tamas.
1.4.47.83
tatra yaḥ sāttviko nāma sa svargaṃ pratipadyate ..
Among them, that which is called sāttvika attains heaven;
1.4.47.84
svargātkālaparibhraṣṭo dhanī dharmī sukhī bhavet.. 38 ..
fallen from heaven by the passage of time, one becomes wealthy, righteous, and happy.
1.4.47.85
tathā yastāmaso nāma narakaṃ pratipadyate ..
Likewise, that which is called tāmasa attains hell;
1.4.47.86
bhuktvā bahvīryātanāśca sthāvaratvaṃ prapadyate .. 39 ..
having suffered many torments, one attains the state of immobile creatures.
1.4.47.87
mahatāṃ darśanasparśairupabhogasahāsanaiḥ ..
Through seeing, touching, sharing food, and sitting together with great beings,
1.4.47.88
mahatā kālayogena saṃsaranmānavo bhavet .. 1.2.49.40 ..
transmigrating through a long course of time, one becomes human.
1.4.47.89
so'pi duḥkhadaridrādyairveṣṭito vikaleṃdriyaḥ ..
Even so, surrounded by misery, poverty, and the like, with defective senses,
1.4.47.90
pratyakṣaḥ sarva lokānāṃ pāpasyaitaddhi lakṣaṇam.. 41 ..
he is visible to all people; for this is the mark of sin.
1.4.47.91
atha yo miśrakarmā syāttiryaktvaṃ pratipadyate ..
Now, he whose action is mixed attains animal birth;
1.4.47.92
mahatāmeva saṃsargātsaṃsaranmānavo bhavet .. 42 ..
by association with great beings alone, transmigrating, he becomes human.
1.4.47.93
yasya puṇyaṃ pṛthutaraṃ pāpamalpaṃ hi jāyate ..
He whose merit is greater and sin is lesser
1.4.47.94
sa pūrvaṃ duḥkhito bhūtvā paścātsaukhyānvito bhavet .. 43 ..
first becomes unhappy and afterwards is endowed with happiness.
1.4.47.95
pāpaṃ pṛthutaraṃ yasya puṇyamalpataraṃ bhavet ..
He whose sin is greater and merit is lesser
1.4.47.96
pūrvaṃ sukhī tato duḥkhī miśrasyaitaddhi lakṣaṇam .. 44 ..
is first happy and then unhappy; this is the characteristic of mixed [karma].
1.4.47.97
tatra mānuṣasaṃbhūtiṃ śṛṇu yādṛgasau bhavet ..
Hear how human birth comes to be in this regard:
1.4.47.98
puruṣasya striyāścaiva śukraśoṇitasaṃgame .. 45 ..
At the union of the semen and ovum of a man and a woman,
1.4.47.99
sarvadoṣavinirmukto jīvaḥ saṃsarate sphuṭam..
the soul, completely freed from all faults, clearly transmigrates,
1.4.47.100
guṇānvitamanobuddhiśubhāśubhasamanvitaḥ .. 46 ..
endowed with the qualities of mind and intellect, accompanied by good and bad [actions].
1.4.47.101
jīvaḥ praviṣṭo garbhaṃ tu kalale pratitiṣṭhati ..
Having entered the womb, the soul resides in the embryo at its fluid stage;
1.4.47.102
mūḍhaśca kalale tatra māsamātraṃ ca tiṣṭhati .. 47 ..
and stupified, it remains there in the fluid stage for just a month.
1.4.47.103
dvitīyaṃ tu tathā māsaṃ ghanībhūtaḥ sa tiṣṭhati ..
In the second month it remains having become a solid mass;
1.4.47.104
tasyāvayavanirmāṇaṃ tṛtīye māsi jāyate .. 48 ..
the formation of its limbs occurs in the third month.
1.4.47.105
asthīni ca tathā māsi jāyaṃte ca caturthake ..
And in the fourth month bones are produced;
1.4.47.106
tvagjanma paṃcame māsi paṣṭhe romṇāṃ samudbhavaḥ .. 49 ..
the birth of skin is in the fifth month; in the sixth is the appearance of hair.
1.4.47.107
saptame ca tathā māsi prabodhaścāsya jāyate ..
In the seventh month its consciousness is awakened;
1.4.47.108
māturāhārapītaṃ ca saptame māsyupāśnute .. 1.2.49.50 ..
and in the seventh month it partakes of what is eaten and drunk by the mother.
1.4.47.109
aṣṭame navame māsi bhṛśamudvijate tataḥ ..
In the eighth and ninth months it is then intensely agitated;
1.4.47.110
jarāyuṇā veṣṭitāṃgo mukhe baddhakarāṃguliḥ ..51..
with its limbs wrapped in the amnion, its fingers clasped to its mouth.
1.4.47.111
madhye klībastu vāme strī dakṣiṇe puruṣastathā ..
An eunuch lies in the middle, a female on the left, and a male on the right;
1.4.47.112
tiṣṭhatyudarabhāge ca pṛṣṭheragnimukhaḥ kila .. 52..
it stays in the abdominal region, facing the digestive fire from behind.
1.4.47.113
yasyāṃ tiṣṭhatyasau yonau tāṃ ca vetti na saṃśayaḥ ..
It recognizes without doubt that womb in which it stays;
1.4.47.114
sarvaṃ smarati vṛttāṃtaṃ bahūnāṃ janmanāmapi .. 53 ..
it remembers the entire course of even many births.
1.4.47.115
aṃdhe tamasi kiṃ dṛśyo gaṃdhānmohaṃ dṛḍhaṃ labhet ..
What can be seen in blind darkness? From the smell it falls into deep delusion.
1.4.47.116
śīte mātrā jale pīte śītamuṣṇaṃ tathoṣṇake .. 54 ..
When cold water is drunk by the mother, it feels cold; likewise, it feels hot when [she drinks] hot [water].
1.4.47.117
vyāyāme labhate mātuḥ kleśaṃ vyādheśca vedanām ..
During the mother's physical exertion it suffers distress, and it feels pain from illness.
1.4.47.118
alakṣyāḥ pitṛmātṛbhyāṃ jāyaṃte vyādhayaḥ parāḥ .. 55 ..
Other severe diseases arise that cannot be noticed by the father and mother;
1.4.47.119
saukumāryādrujaṃ tīvrāṃ janayaṃti ca tasya te ..
due to its delicacy, these cause sharp agony to it.
1.4.47.120
svalpamapyatha taṃ kālaṃ vetti varṣaśatopamam .. 56 ..
Even a very brief time it perceives as equal to a hundred years.
1.4.47.121
saṃtapyate bhṛśaṃ garbhe karmabhiśca purātanaiḥ ..
It burns intensely in the womb because of its past actions,
1.4.47.122
manorathāṃśca kurute sukṛtārthaṃ punaḥpunaḥ .. 57..
and repeatedly forms resolutions for the sake of virtuous deeds:
1.4.47.123
janma cedahamāpsyāmi mānuṣye jīvitaṃ tathā ..
“If I obtain birth and life in the human realm,
1.4.47.124
tatastatprakariṣyāmi yena mokṣo bhavetsphuṭam..58..
then I shall do that by which liberation will clearly come to be.”
1.4.47.125
evaṃ tu ciṃtayānasya sīmaṃtonnayanādanu..
While it is thinking thus, after the rite of parting the hair,
1.4.47.126
māsadvayaṃ tadvrajati pīḍatastriyugākṛti .. 59 ..
those two months pass in suffering, shaped with three pairs [of limbs folded].
1.4.47.127
tataḥ svakāle saṃpūrṇe sūtimārutacālitaḥ ..
Then, when its time is full, impelled by the wind of birth,
1.4.47.128
bhavatyavāṅmukho jaṃtuḥ pīḍāmanubhavanparām .. ..1.2.49.60..
the creature turns head downward, experiencing intense agony.
1.4.47.129
adhomukhaḥ saṃkaṭena yonidvāreṇa niḥsaret..
Head downward, it emerges through the narrow opening of the vulva,
1.4.47.130
pīḍayā pīḍamāno'pi carmotkartanatulyayā .. 61 ..
even while being tormented with a pain like the flaying of the skin.
1.4.47.131
karapatrasamasparśaṃ karasaṃsparśanādikam ..
The touch of hands and the like feels to it like the touch of a saw;
1.4.47.132
asau jāto vijānāti māsamātraṃ vimohitaḥ .. 62 ..
being born, deluded, it experiences this for just a month.
1.4.47.133
prākkarmavaśagasyāsya garbhajñānaṃ ca naśyati ..
Subject to past actions, its womb-knowledge perishes;
1.4.47.134
tataḥ karoti karmāṇi śvetaraktāsitāni ca .. 63 ..
then it performs actions that are white, red, and black.
1.4.47.135
asthipaṭṭatulāstaṃbhasnāyubaṃdhena yaṃtritam ..
[The body,] framed with rafters and pillars of bone and fastened by sinews,
1.4.47.136
raktamāṃsamṛdāliptaṃ viṇmūtradravyabhājanam .. 64 ..
smeared with the clay of blood and flesh, a vessel for the matter of feces and urine,
1.4.47.137
saptabhittisusaṃbaddhaṃ channaṃ roma tṛṇairapi ..
well-secured by seven walls, thatched with the grass of body hair,
1.4.47.138
vadanaikamahādvāraṃ gavākṣāṣṭavibhūṣitam .. 65 ..
having one great gate, the mouth, adorned with eight windows,
1.4.47.139
oṣṭhadvayakapāṭaṃ ca daṃtārgalavimudritam ..
possessing two lip-doors, and sealed with the bolts of teeth,
1.4.47.140
nāḍīsvedapravāhaṃ ca kaphapittapariplutam .. .. 66 ..
having a stream of channels and sweat, flooded with phlegm and bile,
1.4.47.141
jarāśokasamāviṣṭaṃ kālavaktrānalasthitam ..
overtaken by old age and sorrow, standing in the fiery mouth of Time,
1.4.47.142
rāgadveṣādibhirdhvastaṃ ṣaṭkauśikasamudbhavam .. 67 ..
ruined by passion, hatred, and the like, arisen from the six sheaths.
1.4.47.143
evaṃ saṃjāyate puṃso dehagehamidaṃ dvija ..
Thus, O twice-born, this bodily house is produced for man,
1.4.47.144
yasminvasati kṣetrajño gṛhastho buddhigehinī .. 68 ..
in which dwells the knower of the field as the householder, with intellect as the mistress of the house,
1.4.47.145
mokṣaṃ svargaṃ ca narakamāste saṃsādhayannapi .. 69 .. ..
living there while bringing about liberation, heaven, or even hell.
1.4.47.146
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśīti sāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe kaumārikākhaṃḍe kamaṭhasūryasaṃvāde jīvasya dehotpattivarṇanaṃnāmaikonapañcāśattamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 49 ..
Thus ends the forty-ninth chapter, titled "Description of the Origin of the Embodied Soul's Body" in the dialogue between Kamaṭha and the Sun, in the Kaumārikākhaṇḍa of the first [section], the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a compendium of eighty-one thousand verses.
