1.4.51.1
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.51.2
athānyatsaṃpravakṣyāmi śālāmāhātmya muttamam ..
Now I shall describe another excellent [topic], the supreme māhātmya of the hall.
1.4.51.3
saṃsthāpite purā sthāne proktohaṃ dvijapuṃgavaiḥ .. 1 ..
Formerly, when the place was established, I was addressed by the eminent twice-born:
1.4.51.4
sthānasya rakṣaṇārthāya upāyaṃ kuru suvrata ..
'For the protection of this place, O you of noble vows, devise an expedient!'
1.4.51.5
tato mayā pratijñātaṃ kariṣye sthāna rakṣaṇam .. 2 ..
Then a vow was made by me: 'I will ensure the protection of the place.'
1.4.51.6
ārādhitā mayā paścādbrahmaviṣṇumaheśvarāḥ ..
Afterwards, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara were worshipped by me,
1.4.51.7
trayastvekāgracittena tatastuṣṭāḥ surottamāḥ .. 3 ..
The three indeed, with single-minded focus; then the foremost gods were pleased.
1.4.51.8
samāgamyātha māṃ procurnārada vriyatāṃ varaḥ ..
Approaching, they then said to me: 'O Nārada, choose a boon!'
1.4.51.9
proktaṃ tānārcya ca mayā kriyatāṃ sthānarakṣaṇam .. 4 ..
Having honoured them, I said: 'Let the protection of the place be carried out!
1.4.51.10
ayameva varo mahyaṃ deyo devaiḥ sutoṣitaiḥ ..
Just this boon is to be granted to me by the well-pleased gods,
1.4.51.11
sthānalopo yathā na syādyathā kīrtirbhavenmama .. 5 ..
So that there may be no loss of the place, and so that my renown will endure.'
1.4.51.12
evamastviti deveśaiḥ pratijñātaṃ tadā mune ..
'So be it!' Thus a promise was made then by the lords of gods, O sage:
1.4.51.13
svāṃśena prakaripyāma dvijānāṃ tava rakṣaṇam .. 6 ..
'By our own portions we will protect your twice-born.'
1.4.51.14
evamuktvā kalā muktā devaistripuruṣaiḥ svayam ..
Having spoken thus, a portion was released by the gods, the three persons themselves;
1.4.51.15
aṃtardhānaṃ tataḥ prāptāḥ sarve'pi surasattamāḥ .. 7 ..
Then all the foremost gods vanished.
1.4.51.16
tato mayā dvijaiḥ sārdhaṃ śālāgre sthānarakṣaṇam ..
Then, together with the twice-born, in front of the hall, for the protection of the place,
1.4.51.17
sthāpitāśca pṛthagdevāstrayastribhuvaneśvarāḥ .. 8 ..
The three separate gods, the lords of the three worlds, were installed by me.
1.4.51.18
pīḍyamānā yadā viprāḥ kenāpi ca bhavaṃti hi ..
Whenever the brahmins are oppressed by anyone,
1.4.51.19
pūrvāhne cāpi ṛgvedaṃ madhyāhne ca yajūṃ ṣyatha .. 9 ..
Having recited the Ṛgveda in the forenoon and the Yajurveda at midday,
1.4.51.20
yāme tṛtīye sāmāni tārasvaramadhītya ca ..
And the Sāmans in a high pitch in the third watch,
1.4.51.21
śāpaṃ yasya pradāsyaṃti śālāgre bhṛśaroṣitāḥ .. 1.2.53.10 ..
Whomever they, deeply angered, curse in front of the hall,
1.4.51.22
saptāhādvarṣamadhyādvā trivarṣādbhasmatāṃ vrajet ..
He will be reduced to ashes within seven days, within a year, or within three years:
1.4.51.23
pratijñātā sthānarakṣā yadi vo nāradāgrataḥ .. 11 ..
'If the protection of this place was promised by you before Nārada,
1.4.51.24
satyena tena no vairī bhasmībhavatu ha kṣaṇāt ..
By that truth let our enemy be reduced to ashes in an instant!'
1.4.51.25
anena śāpa maṃtreṇa bhasmībhavati niścitam .. 12 ..
By this curse-mantra he is surely reduced to ashes.
1.4.51.26
śālāṃ tripuruṣāṃ tatra yaḥ paśyati dinedine ..
Whoever beholds daily that hall of the Three Persons there,
1.4.51.27
arcayettoṣayeccāsau svargaloke mahīyate .. 13 ..
And worships and propitiates [them], is glorified in the heavenly world.
1.4.51.28
iti tripuruṣaśālāmāhātmyam .. ..
Thus ends the māhātmya of the hall of the Three Persons.
1.4.51.29
nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.51.30
athānyatsaṃpravakṣyāmi madīyasaraso mahat .. 14 ..
Now I shall proclaim another great [matter]: of my lake
1.4.51.31
māhātmyamatulaṃ pārtha devānāmapi durlabham ..
The matchless māhātmya, O son of Pṛthā, difficult even for the gods to attain.
1.4.51.32
mayā pūrvaṃ saraḥ khātaṃ darbhāṃkuraśalākayā .. 15 ..
Formerly, a lake was dug by me with a needle made of a darbhā sprout.
1.4.51.33
mṛttikā tāmrapātreṇa tyaktā bāhye tataḥ svayam ..
Then the earth was personally carried out with a copper vessel.
1.4.51.34
sarveṣāmeva tīrthānāmāhṛtyodaka muttamam .. 16 ..
Having fetched the excellent water of all sacred fords,
1.4.51.35
tattatra sarasi kṣiptaṃ tena saṃpūritaṃ saraḥ ..
It was poured there into the lake; by that, the lake was filled.
1.4.51.36
āśvine māsi saṃprāpte bhānuvāre naraḥ śuciḥ .. 17 ..
When the month of Āśvina arrives, a pure man, on a Sunday,
1.4.51.37
śrāddhaṃ yaḥ kurute tatra snātvā dānaṃ viśeṣataḥ ..
Who bathes there and performs a śrāddha, especially giving gifts,
1.4.51.38
pitarastasya tṛpyaṃti yāvadābhūtasaṃplavam .. 18 ..
His ancestors are satisfied until the dissolution of all beings.
1.4.51.39
nāradīyaṃ saro hyetadvikhyāta jagatītale ..
This lake belonging to Nārada is renowned on the surface of the earth;
1.4.51.40
mahatā puṇyayogena devairapi hi labhyate .. 19 ..
Even by the gods it is attained only through a great accumulation of merit.
1.4.51.41
yadatra dīyate dānaṃ hūyate yacca pāvake ..
Whatever gift is given here, and whatever is offered into the fire,
1.4.51.42
sarvaṃ tadakṣayaṃ vidyājjapānaśanasādhanāt .. 1.2.53.20 ..
One should know all that to be imperishable through recitation, fasting, and spiritual practice.
1.4.51.43
nāradīye saraḥśreṣṭhe snātvā yo nāradeśva ram ..
Having bathed in this best of lakes belonging to Nārada, whichever mortal
1.4.51.44
pūjayecchraddhayā martyaḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate .. 21 ..
Worships Nāradeśvara with faith, is freed from all sins.
1.4.51.45
atra tīrthe purā pārtha sarvanāgaistapaḥ kṛtam ..
At this sacred ford formerly, O son of Pṛthā, austerity was performed by all the Nāgas
1.4.51.46
kadrūśāpasya mokṣārthamātmano hitakā myayā .. 22 ..
For release from the curse of Kadrū, wishing for their own welfare.
1.4.51.47
tataḥ siddhiṃ parāṃ prāptā etarttārthaprabhāvataḥ ..
Then they attained supreme perfection through the power of this sacred ford;
1.4.51.48
tato nāgeśvaraṃ liṃgaṃ sthāpayāmāsurūrjitam .. 23 ..
Then they installed the powerful liṅga, Nāgeśvara,
1.4.51.49
nāradāduttare bhāge sarve nāgāḥ praharṣitāḥ ..
To the north of Nārada's [lake], all the Nāgas greatly delighted.
1.4.51.50
nāradīye saraḥśreṣṭhe yaḥ snātvā pūjayeddharam .. 24 ..
Whoever, having bathed in the best lake belonging to Nārada, worships Hara—
1.4.51.51
nāgeśvaraṃ mahābhaktyā tasya puṇyamanantakam ..
[and] Nāgeśvara with great devotion, his merit is endless.
1.4.51.52
teṣāṃ sarpabhayaṃ nāsti nāgānāṃ vacanaṃ yathā .. 25 ..
They have no fear of snakes, according to the word of the serpents. // 25
1.4.51.53
iti nāradīyasaromāhātmyam ..
Thus ends the māhātmya of Nārada’s lake.

guarded by two hundred and forty million goddesses. // 27
1.4.51.58
