1.4.56.1
.. arjuna uvāca .. ..
Arjuna said:
1.4.56.2
guptakṣetramidaṃ kasmātkasmādguptaṃ ca nārada ..
Why is this a hidden sacred field, and for what reason is it hidden, O Nārada,
1.4.56.3
yasya prabhāvaḥ sumahānnaiva kasyāpi saṃstutaḥ .. 1 ..
whose majesty is so great, yet not praised by anyone? (1)
1.4.56.4
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.56.5
purātanāmatra kathāṃ guptakṣetrasya kāraṇe ..
Regarding the cause of the hidden sacred field, an ancient story—
1.4.56.6
śṛṇu pāṃḍava śāpena guptamāsīdidaṃ yathā .. 2 ..
hear, O Pāṇḍava, how it became hidden on account of a curse. (2)
1.4.56.7
purā nimitte kasmiṃścitsarvatīrthādhidaivatāḥ ..
Long ago, on a certain occasion, the presiding deities of all sacred fords
1.4.56.8
praṇāmāya brahmasado brahmāṇaṃ sahitā yayuḥ .. 3 ..
went together to the assembly of Brahmā to pay homage to Brahmā: (3)
1.4.56.9
puṣkarasya prabhāsasya nimiṣasyārbudasya ca ..
the deities of Puṣkara, Prabhāsa, Nimiṣa, Arbuda,
1.4.56.10
kurukṣetrasya kṣetrasya dharmāraṇyasya devatāḥ .. 4 ..
the field of Kurukṣetra, and Dharmāraṇya; (4)
1.4.56.11
vastrāpathasya śvetasya phalgutīrthaṃ sya cāpi yāḥ ..
those of Vastrāpatha, Śveta, and the Phalgu sacred ford;
1.4.56.12
kedārasya tathānyeṣāṃ kṣetrāṇāṃ koṭiśo'pi yāḥ .. 5 ..
those of Kedāra, and of other sacred fields by the millions; (5)
1.4.56.13
siṃdhusāgarayogasya mahīsāgarakasya ca ..
the lords of the confluence of the Indus and the ocean, and of Mahīsāgara,
1.4.56.14
gaṃgāsāgarayogasya adhipāḥ sūkarasya ca .. 6 ..
the confluence of the Gaṅgā and the ocean, and of Sūkara; (6)
1.4.56.15
gaṃgārevāmukhīnāṃ tu nadīnāmadhidevatāḥ ..
and the presiding deities of rivers headed by the Gaṅgā and the Revā;
1.4.56.16
śoṇahradapurogāṇāṃ hradānāṃ cādhidevatāḥ .. 7 ..
and the presiding deities of pools, with the Śoṇa pool at their head. (7)
1.4.56.17
te sarve saṃghaśo bhūtvā śraiṣṭhya jñānāya cātmanaḥ ..
They all, gathering in groups in order to know their own pre-eminence,
1.4.56.18
samupājagmuramalā mahatīṃ brahmaṇaḥ sabhām .. 8 ..
came, pure, to the great assembly of Brahmā. (8)
1.4.56.19
tatra tīrthāni sarvāṇi samāyātāni vīkṣya saḥ ..
Seeing all the sacred fords arrived there,
1.4.56.20
uttasthau sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ sabhāsadbhiḥ pitāmahaḥ .. 9 ..
the Grandfather rose up together with all the members of the assembly. (9)
1.4.56.21
praṇamya sarvatīrthebhyaḥ prabaddhakarasaṃpuṭaḥ ..
Having bowed to all the sacred fords with folded hands,
1.4.56.22
tīrthāni bhagavānāha vismayotphullalocanaḥ .. 1.2.58.10 ..
the Lord spoke to the sacred fords, his eyes wide with wonder: (10)
1.4.56.23
adya naḥ sadma sakalaṃ yuṣmābhiratipāvitam ..
"Today our entire abode has been exceedingly sanctified by you,
1.4.56.24
vayaṃ ca pāvitā bhūyo yuṣmākaṃ darśanādapi .. 11 ..
and we too have been doubly sanctified merely by the sight of you. (11)
1.4.56.25
tīrthānāṃ darśanaṃ śreyaḥ sparśanaṃ snānameva ca ..
Beholding the sacred fords, touching them, and indeed bathing in them,
1.4.56.26
kīrtanaṃ smaraṇaṃ cāpi na syātpuṇyaṃ vinā param ..12..
praising them, and remembering them also—there is no higher merit than this. (12)
1.4.56.27
mahāpāpānvitā raudrāstvapi ye syuḥ suniṣṭhurāḥ ..
Even those who are burdened with grave sins, fierce and most cruel,
1.4.56.28
te'pi tīrthaiḥ prapūyaṃte kiṃ punardharmasaṃsthitāḥ ..13..
even they are thoroughly purified by the sacred fords; how much more so those established in righteousness!" (13)
1.4.56.29
evamuktvā pulastyaṃ sa putramabhyādideśa ha ..
Having spoken thus, he instructed his son Pulastya:
1.4.56.30
śīghramarghaṃ tīrthahetoḥ samānaya yathārcaye .. 14 ..
"Quickly bring guest-offering for the sake of the sacred fords, so that I may worship [them]." (14)
1.4.56.31
.. pulastya uvāca ..
Pulastya said:
1.4.56.32
asaṃkhyānīha tīrthāni dṛśyaṃte padmasaṃbhava ..
"Innumerable sacred fords are seen here, O lotus-born one.
1.4.56.33
yathā diśasi māṃ tāta arghamekamupānaye .. 15 ..
As you command me, father, I shall bring a single guest-offering, (15)
1.4.56.34
dharmapravacane śloko yata eṣa pragīyate .. 16 ..
since this verse is sung in the exposition of righteousness: (16)
1.4.56.35
bhaveyuryadyasaṃkhyātā arghayogyāḥ samarcane ..
'If in worship there are innumerable ones worthy of a guest-offering,
1.4.56.36
tatasteṣāṃ variṣṭhāya dātavyo'rghaḥ kilaikataḥ .. 17 ..
then the guest-offering is indeed to be given to the foremost of them, as one.'" (17)
1.4.56.37
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
1.4.56.38
sābhiprāyaṃ sādhu vatsa tvayā proktamidaṃ vacaḥ ..
"Well spoken, my child! This word has been uttered by you with deep meaning.
1.4.56.39
evaṃ kuruṣvaikamarghamānaya tvaṃ suśīghrataḥ .. 18 ..
Do so: bring quickly a single guest-offering." (18)
1.4.56.40
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.56.41
tataḥ pulastyo vegena samāninye'rghamuttamam ..
Then Pulastya swiftly brought an excellent guest-offering.
1.4.56.42
taṃ ca brahmā kare gṛhya tīrthānyāheti bhāratīm .. 19 ..
Taking it in his hand, Brahmā spoke these words to the sacred fords: (19)
1.4.56.43
sarvairbhavadbhiḥ saṃhatya mukhyastvekaḥ prakīrtyatām ..
"Let one who is foremost be declared by all of you together,
1.4.56.44
tasmai cārghaṃ prayacchāmi naivaṃ māmanayaḥ spṛśet .. 1.2.58.20 ..
and to that one I shall offer the guest-offering; thus impropriety will not touch me." (20)
1.4.56.45
.. tīrthānyūcuḥ .. ..
The sacred fords said:
1.4.56.46
na vayaṃ śreṣṭhatāṃ vidmaḥ kathaṃcana parasparam ..
"We do not know each other's superiority in any way.
1.4.56.47
asmāddhetośca saṃprāptā jñātvā dehi tvameva tat .. 21 ..
And for this reason we have come; knowing it yourself, bestow it!" (21)
1.4.56.48
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
1.4.56.49
nāhaṃ vedmi śreṣṭhatāṃ vaḥ kathaṃcana namo'stu vaḥ ..
"I do not know your superiority in any way; obeisance be unto you!
1.4.56.50
sarve cāpāramāhātmyaṃ svayaṃ me vaktumarhatha .. 22 ..
You ought all to tell me of your own boundless majesty. (22)
1.4.56.51
yatra gaṃgā gayā kāśī puṣkaraṃ naimiṣaṃ tathā ..
Where there are Gaṅgā, Gayā, Kāśī, Puṣkara, and Naimiṣa,
1.4.56.52
kurukṣetraṃ tathā revā mahīsāgarasaṃgamaḥ .. 23 ..
Kurukṣetra, and likewise Revā, the confluence of Mahīsāgara, (23)
1.4.56.53
prabhāsādyāni śataśo yatra nastatra kā matiḥ .. 24 ..
and hundreds beginning with Prabhāsa—what judgment could be ours?" (24)
1.4.56.54
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
1.4.56.55
evamukte padmabhuvā kopi novāca kiṃcana ..
When this was spoken by the lotus-born one, no one said anything.
1.4.56.56
cireṇedaṃ tataḥ prāha mahīsāgarasaṃgamaḥ .. 25 ..
Then, after a long time, the confluence of the Mahī and the ocean spoke this:
1.4.56.57
mamainamarghaṃ tvaṃ yaccha caturānana śīghrataḥ ..
"Quickly grant this guest-offering to me, O four-faced one [Brahmā]!
1.4.56.58
yataḥ koṭikalāyāṃ vā mama ko'pi na pūryate .. 26 ..
For no one can equal even a ten-millionth fraction of me! / 26
1.4.56.59
yataścendradyumnarājñā tāpyamānā vasuṃdharā ..
Because when the earth was scorched by King Indradyumna,
1.4.56.60
sarvatīrthadravībhūtā mahīnāmābhavannadī .. 27 ..
she was liquefied by all the sacred fords and became the river named Mahī. / 27
1.4.56.61
sā ca sarvāṇi tīrthāni saṃyuktāni mayā saha ..
And she, joined with all the sacred fords, is united with me;
1.4.56.62
sarvatīrthamayastasmādasmi khyāto jagattraye .. 28 ..
therefore, throughout the three worlds, I am renowned as consisting of all sacred fords. / 28
1.4.56.63
guhena ca mahāliṃgaṃ kumāreśvaramīśvaram ..
Moreover, after establishing the great liṅga Īśvara Kumāreśvara,
1.4.56.64
saṃsthāpya tīrthamukhyatvaṃ mama dattaṃ mahātmanā .. 29 ..
the primacy among sacred fords was granted to me by the great-souled Guha. / 29
1.4.56.65
nāradenāpi mattīre sthānaṃ saṃsthāpya śobhanam ..
Nārada too, having established a splendid seat on my bank,
1.4.56.66
sarvebhyaḥ puṇyakṣetrebhyo dattaṃ śraiṣṭhyaṃ purā mama .. 1.2.58.30 ..
formerly granted me pre-eminence over all sacred fields. / 1.2.58.30
1.4.56.67
evaṃ tribhirhetuvarairmamevārghaḥ pradīyatām ..
Thus, because of these three excellent reasons, let the guest-offering be given to me alone.
1.4.56.68
guṇaikadeśe'pi samaṃ mama tīrthaṃ na vai param .. 31 ..
No other sacred ford is equal to me, even in a fraction of my virtues!" / 31
1.4.56.69
ityukte vacane pārtha tīrtharājena bhārata..
When this speech had been spoken by the king of sacred fords, O son of Pṛthā [Arjuna], O Bhārata,
1.4.56.70
sarve nocuḥ kiṃcanāpi kiṃ brahmā vakṣyatīti yat .. 32 ..
no one said anything at all, wondering what Brahmā would say. / 32
1.4.56.71
tato brahmasuto jyeṣṭhaḥ śvetamālyānulepanaḥ ..
Then the eldest son of Brahmā, adorned with a white garland and white sandal-paste,
1.4.56.72
dakṣiṇaṃ bāhumuddhatya dharmo vacanamabravīt .. 33 ..
raising his right arm, Dharma, spoke these words: / 33
1.4.56.73
aho kaṣṭamidaṃ kūktaṃ tīrtharājena mohataḥ ..
"Ah, alas, this was ill-spoken out of delusion by the king of sacred fords!
1.4.56.74
santo'pi na guṇā vācyāḥ svayaṃ sadbhiḥ svakā yataḥ .. 34 ..
For even when they exist, one's own virtues should never be spoken by the virtuous themselves. / 34
1.4.56.75
svīyānguṇānsvayaṃ yo hi sampatsu prakṣipanparān ..
He who himself speaks of his own virtues, casting down others in [their] prosperity,
1.4.56.76
bravīti rājasastveṣa hyahaṃkāro jugupsitaḥ .. 35 ..
this is indeed a contemptible egoism born of passion. / 35
1.4.56.77
tasmādasmādahaṃkārātsatsvapyeṣu guṇeṣu ca ..
Therefore, because of this egoism, even though these virtues do exist,
1.4.56.78
aprakhyātaṃ dhvastarūpamidaṃ tīrthaṃ bhaviṣyati ..36..
this sacred ford will become unrenowned and ruined in form. / 36
1.4.56.79
staṃbhatīrthamiti khyātaṃ stambho garvaḥ kṛto yataḥ ..
It will be known as Stambhatīrtha, because arrogance (stambha) was displayed [here].
1.4.56.80
staṃbhasya hi phalaṃ sadyo brahmāpi prāpa kiṃ paraḥ .. 37 ..
For even Brahmā immediately incurred the fruit of arrogance; how much more another?" / 37
1.4.56.81
ityukte dharmadevena hāheti rava utthitaḥ ..
When this was spoken by the god Dharma, a cry of "Alas, alas!" arose.
1.4.56.82
tataḥ śīghraṃ samāyāto yogīśo'haṃ ca pāṃḍava .. 38 ..
Then, O son of Pāṇḍu, both the lord of yogins [Guha] and I arrived swiftly. / 38
1.4.56.83
guhastato vacaḥ prāha dharmadevasamāgame ..
Then Guha spoke words in the assembly of the god Dharma:
1.4.56.84
ayuktametacchāpo'yaṃ datto yaddharma dhārṣṭyataḥ .. 39 ..
"This is improper, O Dharma, that this curse has been given out of rashness! / 39
1.4.56.85
bravītu ko'pi sarveṣāṃ tīrthānāṃ teṣu vartatām ..
Let anyone among all the sacred fords present there speak,
1.4.56.86
yadyaiśvaryaṃ nārhatesau mahīsāgarasaṃgamaḥ .. 1.2.58.40 ..
if this confluence of the Mahī and the ocean does not deserve sovereignty! / 1.2.58.40
1.4.56.87
tiṣṭhatvātmaguṇo yacca tīrtharājena varṇitaḥ ..
Let alone his own virtue which was described by the king of sacred fords;
1.4.56.88
tatra ko viguṇo nāma mithyāvādī yato guṇaḥ .. 41 ..
what flaw is there in that, since the virtue was spoken truly? / 41
1.4.56.89
aho na yuktaṃ pālānāṃ yadi te'pyavimṛśya ca ..
Ah, it is not fitting for guardians if even they, without deliberating,
1.4.56.90
evamarthānkariṣyaṃti kaṃ yāṃti śaraṇaṃ prajāḥ .. 42 ..
decide matters in this way! To whom will the subjects turn for refuge?" / 42
1.4.56.91
evamukte guhenātha dharmo vacanamabravīt ..
When Guha had spoken thus, Dharma then said:
1.4.56.92
satyametadyadarho'yaṃ mahīsāgarasaṃgamaḥ .. 43 ..
"It is true that this confluence of the Mahī and the ocean is worthy / 43
1.4.56.93
mukhyatvaṃ sarvatīrthānāmarghaṃ cāpi pitāmahāt ..
of primacy among all sacred fords and also of the guest-offering from the Grandfather [Brahmā].
1.4.56.94
kiṃtu nātmaguṇā vācyāḥ satāmetatsadā vratam ..
Yet one's own virtues should not be spoken; this is the eternal vow of the virtuous.
1.4.56.95
parokṣepi svapraśaṃsā brahmāṇamapi cālayet .. 44 ..
Self-praise, even when said behind one's back, would cause even Brahmā to fall. / 44
1.4.56.96
svapraśaṃsāṃ prakurvāṇaḥ parākṣepasamanvitām ..
Did not Yayāti of old, uttering self-praise
1.4.56.97
kiṃ divaḥ pṛthivīṃ pūrvaṃ yayātirna papāta ha ..
accompanied by censuring others, fall from heaven to the earth?
1.4.56.98
yāni pūrvaṃ pramāṇāni kṛtānīśena dhīmatā ..45..
The standards that were established of old by the wise Īśa— / 45
1.4.56.99
tāni sampālanīyāni tāni ko'ti kramedbudhaḥ ..
those must be maintained; what wise person would transgress them?
1.4.56.100
tava pitrā samādiśya yadarthaṃ sthāpitā vayam .. 46 ..
We, who were established by your father by his command for this purpose, / 46
1.4.56.101
pālayāmāsa etacca tvaṃ pālayitumarhasi ..
have maintained this, and you also ought to uphold it.
1.4.56.102
īśvarāḥ svapramāṇena bhavaṃto yadi kurvate .. 47 ..
If you lords act by your own authority, / 47
1.4.56.103
tadasmābhiridaṃ yuktaṃ śāsanaṃ diśyatāṃ param ..
then let this supreme ordinance be directed by us!"
1.4.56.104
evamuktvā svīyamudrāṃ moktukāmaṃ vṛṣaṃ tadā ..48..
Having said this, as he was about to cast aside his bull, / 48
1.4.56.105
ahaṃ prastāvamanvīkṣya vākyametadudairayam..
I, seeing the occasion, spoke these words:
1.4.56.106
namo dharmāya mahate viśvadhātre mahātmane .. 49..
"Obeisance to great Dharma, the supporter of the universe, the great-souled one, / 49
1.4.56.107
brahmaviṣṇuśivairnityaṃ pūjitāyāghanāśine ..
who is constantly worshipped by Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva, the destroyer of sin!
1.4.56.108
yadi mudrāṃ bhavāndharma parityakṣyati karhicit .. 1.2.58.50 ..
If you, O Dharma, should ever abandon your seal [of authority], / 1.2.58.50
1.4.56.109
tadasmākaṃ kuto bhāvo mā viśvaṃ nāśaya prabho ..
then whence would our existence be? Do not destroy the universe, O Lord!
1.4.56.110
yogīśvaraṃ guhaṃ cāpi saṃmānayitumarhasi .. 51 ..
You also ought to show honour to Guha, the lord of yogins; / 51
1.4.56.111
śivavanmānanīyo hi yataḥ sākṣācchivātmajaḥ ..
for he is to be respected just like Śiva, being manifestly Śiva's son.
1.4.56.112
tvāṃ ca devo guhaḥ svāmī saṃmānayitumarhati..52..
And the divine lord Guha ought to show honour to you. / 52
1.4.56.113
yuvayoraikyabhāvena sukhaṃ jīvedidaṃ jagat ..
Through the unity of you two, this world may live happily.
1.4.56.114
tvayā pradattaḥ śāpo'yaṃ mā pratyākhyātilakṣaṇaḥ..53..
Let not this curse that you have given result in total rejection. / 53
1.4.56.115
anugrahaśca kriyatāṃ tīrtharājasya mānada..54..
And grant grace to the king of sacred fords, O giver of honour!" / 54
1.4.56.116
evamuccaramāṇaṃ māṃ praśasyāhāpi padmabhūḥ..
Praising me as I spoke thus, the lotus-born [Brahmā] also said:
1.4.56.117
sādhvetannāradenoktaṃ dharmaitadvacanaṃ kuru.. 55 ..
"Well said is this by Nārada. O Dharma, obey this word!
1.4.56.118
sammānaya guhaṃ cāpi guhaḥ svāmī yato hi naḥ..
Honor Guha as well, for Guha is indeed our lord."
1.4.56.119
evamukte brahmaṇā ca dharmo vacanamabravīt.. 56 ..
When this was spoken by Brahmā, Dharma uttered these words:
1.4.56.120
namo guhāya siddhāya kiṃkarāyasya te vayam..
"Homage to Guha, the perfected one! We are your servants.
1.4.56.121
madīyāṃ skanda vijñaptiṃ nāthaināmavadhāraya ..57..
O lord Skanda, consider this request of mine:
1.4.56.122
staṃbhādetanmahātīrthamaprasiddhaṃ bhaviṣyati ..
Because of the pillar (stambha), this great sacred ford shall become obscure;
1.4.56.123
staṃbhatīrthamiti khyātaṃ suprasiddhaṃ bhaviṣyati ..58 ..
it shall become very famous, known as Stambhatīrtha;
1.4.56.124
stambhatīrthamiti khyātaṃ sarvatīrthaphalapradam ..
known as Stambhatīrtha, bestowing the fruit of all sacred fords.
1.4.56.125
yaścātra snānadānāni prakariṣyati mānavaḥ .. 59 ..
And whatever man shall perform ablutions and gifts here,
1.4.56.126
yathoktaṃ ca phalaṃ tasya sphuṭaṃ sarvaṃ bhaviṣyati ..
all the fruit described for him shall be evident.
1.4.56.127
śanivāre hyamāvāsyā bhavettasyāḥ phalaṃ ca yat .. 1.2.58.60 ..
Whatever fruit there may be of a new-moon day falling on a Saturday,
1.4.56.128
mahīsāgarayātrāyāṃ bhavettaccāvadhāraya ..
know that that very fruit will be gained in a pilgrimage to the Mahīsāgara.
1.4.56.129
prabhāsadaśayātrābhiḥ saptabhiḥ puṣkarasya ca .. 61 ..
Whatever fruit would arise from ten pilgrimages to Prabhāsa, seven to Puṣkara,
1.4.56.130
aṣṭābhiśca prayāgasya tatphalaṃ prabhaviṣyati ..
and eight to Prayāga;
1.4.56.131
paṃcabhiḥ kurukṣetrasya nakulīśasya ca tribhiḥ .. 62 ..
whatever fruit [arises] from five [pilgrimages] to Kurukṣetra and three to Nakulīśa,
1.4.56.132
arbudasya ca yatṣaḍbhistatphalaṃ ca bhaviṣyati ..
and whatever from six to Arbuda;
1.4.56.133
vastrāpathasya tisṛbhirgaṃgāyāḥ paṃcabhiśca yat .. 63 ..
whatever from three to Vastrāpatha and five to the Gaṅgā;
1.4.56.134
kūpodaryāścaturbhiśca tatphalaṃ prabhaviṣyati ..
whatever fruit would arise from four to Kūpodarī;
1.4.56.135
kāśyāḥ ṣaḍbhistathā yatsyādgodāvaryāśca paṃcabhiḥ .. 64 ..
and whatever would be [gained] from six to Kāśī, and five to the Godāvarī—
1.4.56.136
tatphalaṃ staṃbhatīrthe vai śanidarśe bhaviṣyati ..
that very fruit shall indeed be at Stambhatīrtha on a Saturday new-moon day."
1.4.56.137
evaṃ datte vare skaṃdastadā prītamanābhavat .. 65 ..
When the boon was thus granted, Skanda then became pleased in mind.
1.4.56.138
brahmāpi staṃbhatīrthāya dadāvarghaṃ samāhitaḥ ..
Brahmā also, being concentrated in mind, offered arghya to Stambhatīrtha,
1.4.56.139
dadau ca sarvatīrthānāṃ śreṣṭhatvamamitadyutiḥ .. 66 ..
and he of immeasurable splendor granted it pre-eminence over all sacred fords.
1.4.56.140
tīrthāni ca guhaṃ nāthaṃ sammānya visasarja saḥ ..
And having honored the sacred fords and lord Guha, he departed.
1.4.56.141
evametatpurā vṛttaṃ guptakṣetrasya kāraṇam .. 67 ..
Such was this event of old, the cause of the hidden sacred field.
1.4.56.142
bhūyaścāpi prasiddhyarthaṃ preṣitāpsaraso'tra me ..
And again, for the sake of its fame, apsarases were sent here by me;
1.4.56.143
vimokṣitā grāharūpāttvayā tāśca kurūdvaha .. 68 ..
and they were freed by you from the form of crocodiles, O best of Kurus!
1.4.56.144
yato dharmasya sarvasya nānārūpaiḥ pravartataḥ ..
For since all dharma operates in manifold forms,
1.4.56.145
paritrāṇāya bhavataḥ kṛṣṇasya ca bhavo bhave ..69..
your and Kṛṣṇa's birth exists in every age for its protection.
