so'tha prāgjyotiṣādbāhye mahopavanasaṃsthitam ..
Then, outside Prāgjyotiṣa, he saw a golden palace
1.4.58.3
sahasrabhūmikaṃ gehamapaśyata hiraṇmayam .. 1 ..
situated in a great grove, having a thousand storeys,
1.4.58.4
veṇuvīṇāmṛdaṃgānāṃ niḥsvanaiḥ paripūritam ..
filled with the sounds of flutes, vīṇās, and mṛdaṅgas,
1.4.58.5
daśasāhasrasaṃkhyābhiśceṭībhiḥ paripūritam .. 2 ..
crowded with handmaidens numbering ten thousand,
1.4.58.6
āyādbhiḥ pratiyādbhiśca bhagadattasya kiṃkaraiḥ ..
and crowded with messengers of Bhagadatta arriving and departing,
1.4.58.7
kimicchantīti bhaginī pṛcchakairabhipūritam .. 3 ..
asking, ‘What does [our] sister desire?’
1.4.58.8
tadāsādya sa haiḍaṃbirmeroḥ śikharavadgraham ..
Approaching that palace, which was like a peak of Mount Meru, the son of Hiḍimbā
1.4.58.9
dvāri sthitāṃ saṃdadarśa karṇaprāvaraṇāṃ sakhīm .. 4 ..
beheld a female companion, Karṇaprāvaraṇā, standing at the door.
1.4.58.10
tāmāha lalitaṃ vīro bhadre sā kva muroḥ sutā ..
The hero spoke gracefully to her: ‘O auspicious lady, where is that daughter of Mura?
1.4.58.11
kāmuko draṣṭumicchāmi dūradeśāgato'tithiḥ .. 5 ..
As a suitor, a guest arrived from a distant land, I wish to see [her].’
1.4.58.12
.. karṇaprāvaraṇovāca .. ..
Karṇaprāvaraṇā said:
1.4.58.13
kiṃ tavāsti mahābāho tayā maurvyā prayojanam ..
‘What purpose do you have, O mighty-armed one, with that Maurvī?
1.4.58.14
koṭiśo nihatāḥ pūrvaṃ tayā kāmuka kāmukāḥ .. 6 ..
O lover, crores of suitors have been slain by her before!
1.4.58.15
tava rūpamahaṃ dṛṣṭvā ghaṭahāsaṃ sadotkacam ..
Having seen your form, with a pot-like laugh and hair ever erect,
1.4.58.16
praṇamya pādayorvīra sthitā te vacanaṃkarī .. 7 ..
I bow down at your feet, O hero, and stand obedient to your command.
1.4.58.17
tanmayā saha modasva bhuṃkṣva bhogāṃśca kāmuka ..
Therefore, rejoice with me, and enjoy pleasures, O lover!
1.4.58.18
dāsyāmyanucarāṇāṃ te trayāṇāṃ ca priyātrayam .. 8 ..
I shall also give a trio of beloved women to your three attendants.’
1.4.58.19
.. ghaṭotkaca uvāca .. ..
Ghaṭotkaca said:
1.4.58.20
kalyāṇi kiṃvadaṃtī te pramuktā svocitā śubhe ..
‘O auspicious and beautiful one, the rumour spoken by you is fitting for yourself;
1.4.58.21
punarnaitadvacastubhyaṃ viśate mama cetasi .. 9 ..
nonetheless, this speech of yours does not enter my heart.
1.4.58.22
vāmaḥ kāmo yato bhadre yasminnupanibaddhyate ..
For desire is perverse, O blessed lady, towards whatever it fastens upon;
1.4.58.23
sa cātra naiva badhnāti tadvayaṃ ki prakurmahe .. 1.2.60.10 ..
and it does not attach here [to you], so what can we do?
1.4.58.24
adya te svāminī dṛṣṭā jitā vā krīḍate mayā ..
Today your mistress, being seen, will either be won and dally with me,
1.4.58.25
tayā vā vijito yāsye pūrveṣāṃ kāmināṃ gatim .. 11 ..
or, conquered by her, I shall go the way of the previous suitors.
1.4.58.26
karṇaprāvaraṇe tasmācchīghrameva nivedyatām ..
Therefore, O Karṇaprāvaraṇā, let it be announced immediately!’
1.4.58.27
yathā darśanamātreṇa pūjayaṃtyatithiṃ khalu .. 12 ..
so that, by a mere sight, they indeed honour the guest.”
1.4.58.28
iti bhaimervacaḥ śrutvā praskhalaṃtī niśācarī ..
Hearing these words of Bhīma's son, the female demon, stumbling,
1.4.58.29
prāsādaśikharasthāṃ tāṃ maurvīmevaṃ vacovadat .. 13 ..
spoke thus to Maurvī, who was sitting atop the palace:
1.4.58.30
devi ko'pi yuvā śrīmāṃstrailokyeṣvamitaprabhaḥ ..
“O queen, a certain glorious youth, of immeasurable splendour in the three worlds,
1.4.58.31
kāmātithistava dvāri vartate diśa tatparam .. 14 ..
a guest of love, stands at your door; command what is next.”
1.4.58.32
.. kāmakaṭaṃkaṭovāca .. ..
Kāmakaṭaṅkaṭā said:
1.4.58.33
mucyatāṃ śīghramevāsau kimarthaṃ vā vilaṃbase ..
“Let him be released at once! Why do you delay?
1.4.58.34
kadāciddevasaṃgatyā samayo me'bhipūryate .. 15 ..
Perhaps, by divine conjunction, my condition may be fulfilled.”
1.4.58.35
ityuktavacanācceṭī prāpyāvocadghaṭotkacam ..
Upon these spoken words, the maid approached and said to Ghaṭotkaca:
1.4.58.36
vraja śīghraṃ kāmuka tvaṃ tasyā mṛtyośca sannidhau .. 16 ..
“Go quickly, O lover, into her presence—and that of death!”
1.4.58.37
ityuktaḥ sa prahasyaiva tatrotsṛjya svakānugān ..
Thus addressed, laughing and leaving his followers there,
1.4.58.38
praviveśa gṛhaṃ bhaimiḥ siṃho meruguhāmiva .. 17 ..
Bhīma's son entered the palace like a lion entering a cave of Meru.
1.4.58.39
sa paśyañchukasaṃghātānpārāvatagaṇāṃstathā ..
Seeing flocks of parrots and crowds of pigeons,
1.4.58.40
sārikāśca madonmattāśceṭīstāṃ cāpyapaśyata .. 18 ..
and impassioned mainas, he also saw the maidservants,
1.4.58.41
rūpeṇa vayasaḥ caiva raterapi ratiṃkarīm ..
and her, who by her beauty and youth could create delight even in Rati,
1.4.58.42
āṃdolakasukhāsīnāṃ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām .. 19 ..
comfortably seated on a swing, adorned with all ornaments.
1.4.58.43
tāṃ vidyutamivonnaddhāṃ dṛṣṭvā bhaimiraciṃtayata ..
Beholding her standing like lightning, Bhīma's son thought:
1.4.58.44
aho kṛṣṇena pitrā me nirdiṣṭeyaṃ mamocitā .. 1.2.60.20 ..
“Ah, she was properly designated for me by my father Kṛṣṇa!
1.4.58.45
nyāyyametatkṛte pūrvaṃ naṣṭā yatkāmināṃ gaṇāḥ ..
It is fitting that hosts of lovers have perished before on her account.
1.4.58.46
śarīrakṣayaparyāptaṃ kṣīyate yadi kāminām .. 21 ..
If it leads to bodily destruction, lovers are destroyed;
1.4.58.47
kāminīnāṃ kṛte yeṣāṃ kṣīyate gaṇanātra kā ..
what reckoning is there of those destroyed for the sake of lovely women?”
1.4.58.48
evaṃ bahuvidhaṃ kāmī ciṃtayannāha bhīmabhūḥ .. 22 ..
Thinking thus in many ways, the impassioned son of Bhīma spoke:
1.4.58.49
niṣṭhure vajrahṛdaye prāpto'hamatithistava ..
“O cruel woman with a heart of stone, I have arrived as your guest.
1.4.58.50
ucitāṃ tatsatāṃ pūjāṃ kuru yā te hṛdi sthitā .. 23 ..
Render that appropriate honour due to good men, whatever lies in your heart.”
1.4.58.51
iti haiḍaṃbivacanaṃ śrutvā kāmakaṭaṃkaṭā ..
Hearing these words of Hiḍimbā's son, Kāmakaṭaṅkaṭā
1.4.58.52
vismitābhūttasya rūpātsvaṃ niniṃda ca bāliśam .. 24 ..
was astonished by his beauty and blamed her own foolishness:
1.4.58.53
dhigahaṃ yanmayā pūrvaṃ samayaḥ sa kṛto'bhavat ..
“Fie upon me, that such a condition was made by me before!
1.4.58.54
na kṛto'bhūdyadi purā abhaviṣyadasau patiḥ .. 25 ..
If it had not been made in the past, he would have been my husband.”
1.4.58.55
iti saṃcintayantī sā bhaimiṃ vacanamabravīt ..
Thinking thus, she spoke these words to Bhīma's son:
1.4.58.56
vṛthā tvamāgato bhadra jīvanyāhi punaḥ sukhī .. 26 ..
“You have come in vain, gentle sir; go back alive and happy!
1.4.58.57
atha kāmayase māṃ tvaṃ tatkathāṃ śīghramuccara ..
Yet if you desire me, then narrate a tale at once.
1.4.58.58
kathāmābhāṣya yadi māṃ sandehe pātayiṣyasi ..
If, having told a tale, you throw me into doubt,
1.4.58.59
tato'haṃ vaśagā jātā hato vā svapsyase mayā .. 27 ..
then I shall become subject to your will; otherwise, slain by me, you shall sleep.”
1.4.58.60
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
1.4.58.61
ityuktavacanāmetāṃ netropāṃtena vīkṣya saḥ..28..
Having looked with the corner of his eye at her who had spoken thus,
1.4.58.62
smṛtvā carācaraguruṃ kṛṣṇamārabdhavānkathām ..
and remembering Kṛṣṇa, the guru of the moving and unmoving, he began a tale:
1.4.58.63
kasyāṃcidabhavatpatnyāṃ yuvā ko'pyajitedriyaḥ ..29..
“A certain youth with uncontrolled senses had a wife;
1.4.58.64
tasya caikā sutā jajñe bhāryā tasya mṛtā'bhavat ..
a daughter was born to him, and his wife died.
1.4.58.65
tato bālakikāṃ putrīṃ rarakṣa ca pupoṣa ca .. 1.2.60.30 ..
Then he protected and nourished the little girl, his daughter.
1.4.58.66
sā yadābhūdyauvanagā vyaṃjitāvayavā śubhā ..
When she reached youth, with her auspicious limbs developed,
1.4.58.67
prollasatkucamadhyāṃgī prollasanmukhapaṃkajā .. 31 ..
with radiant breasts and slender waist, and a radiant lotus-face,
1.4.58.68
tadāsya kāmalulitamālānaṃ prajahau manaḥ ..
then his mind, agitated by passion, abandoned restraint.
1.4.58.69
provāca tāṃ ca tanayāṃ samāliṃgya durāśayaḥ .. 32 ..
The wicked-minded man embraced that daughter and said:
1.4.58.70
prātiveśmakaputrī tvaṃ mayānīyātra poṣitā ..
‘You are the daughter of a neighbour, brought here and reared by me
1.4.58.71
bhāryārthaṃ suciraṃ kālaṃ tatkāryaṃ sādhaya priye .. 33 ..
for a long time to be my wife; accomplish that purpose, beloved!’
1.4.58.72
ityuktā sā ca mene ca tattathaiva vacastadā ..
Thus addressed, she believed those words to be true;
1.4.58.73
patitvena ca bheje taṃ bhāryātvena sa tāṃ tathā .. 34 ..
she received him as a husband, and he received her as a wife.
1.4.58.74
tatastasyāṃ sutā jajñe tasmānmadanarāsabhāt ..
Then a daughter was born to her from that ass of lust.
1.4.58.75
vada sā tasya bhavati kiṃ dauhitrī sutā'thavā ..
Tell me: is she his granddaughter or his daughter?
1.4.58.76
enaṃ praśnaṃ mama brūhi śīghraṃ cecchaktirasti te .. 35 ..
Answer this question of mine quickly, if you have the power.”
1.4.58.77
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
1.4.58.78
iti praśnaṃ sā ca śrutvā ciṃtayadbahudhā hṛdi .. 36 ..
Having heard this question, she thought deeply in her heart;
1.4.58.79
na ca paśyati nirddhāraṃ praśnasyāsya kathaṃcana ..
she saw no resolution to this question whatsoever.
1.4.58.80
tataḥ praśnena vijitā svāṃ śaktiṃ samupādade .. 37 ..
Then, defeated by the question, she resorted to her own power:
1.4.58.81
atāḍayadrukmarajjuṃ karābhyāṃ dolakasya ca ..
she struck the golden rope of the swing with both hands;
1.4.58.82
tato rakṣāṃsi niṣpetuḥ koṭiśo bhīṣaṇānyati .. 38 ..
then demons rushed out by the millions, exceedingly dreadful,
1.4.58.83
siṃhavyāghravarāhāśca mahiṣāścitrakā mṛgāḥ ..
along with lions, tigers, boars, buffaloes, leopards, and deer.
1.4.58.84
samīkṣya tānasaṃkhyeyānkhādituṃ dhāvato ruṣā .. 39 ..
Seeing them run innumerably in rage to devour him,
1.4.58.85
avādayannakhau bhaimiḥ kaniṣṭhāṃguṣṭhajau hasan ..
Bhīma's son laughed and snapped the nails of his little finger and thumb;
1.4.58.86
tato viniḥsṛtāstatra dviguṇā rākṣasādayaḥ .. 1.2.60.40 ..
then double the number of rākṣasas and beasts sprang forth there.
1.4.58.87
tairmaurvīnirmitāḥ sarve kṣaṇādeva sma bhakṣitāḥ ..
By them, all those created by Maurvī were devoured in an instant.
1.4.58.88
vijitāyāṃ svaśaktau ca balaśaktimathādade .. 41 ..
And when her own power was conquered, she then took up the power of strength.
1.4.58.89
utthāya sahasā dolātkhaḍgamādātumaicchata ..
Rising swiftly from the swing, she wished to seize a sword.
1.4.58.90
uttiṣṭhaṃtīṃ ca tāṃ bhaimiranusṛtya javādiva .. 42 ..
And as she was rising up, Bhīma's son pursued her as if with speed,
1.4.58.91
keśeṣvādāya savyena pāṇinā'pātayadbhuvi ..
and seizing her by the hair with his left hand, cast her down onto the ground.
1.4.58.92
tataḥ kaṃṭhe savyapādaṃ dattvādāya ca kartikām ..43..
Then, placing his left foot upon her neck and taking a knife
1.4.58.93
dakṣiṇena kareṇāsyāśchettumaicchata nāsikām..
with his right hand, he wished to cut off her nose.
1.4.58.94
visphuraṃtī tato maurvī maṃdamāha ghaṭotkacam ..44..
Then Maurvī, trembling, spoke softly to Ghaṭotkaca:
1.4.58.95
praśnena śaktyā ca balena nātha tridhā tvayāhaṃ vijitā namaste ..
"By question, by power, and by strength, O lord, I have been conquered by you in three ways; homage to you.
1.4.58.96
tanmuṃca māṃ karmakarī tavāsmi samādiśa tvaṃ prakaromi tacca .. 45 ..
Therefore release me; I am your servant. Command me, and I shall do that."
1.4.58.97
.. ghaṭotkaca uvāca .. ..
Ghaṭotkaca said:
1.4.58.98
yadyevaṃ tarhi muktāsi bhūyo darśaya yadbalam ..
"If so, then you are released; show again whatever strength [you have]."
1.4.58.99
evamuktvā mumocaināṃ muktā cāha praṇamya sā .. 46 ..
Having spoken thus, he released her; and released, she bowed and said:
1.4.58.100
jānāmi tvāṃ mahābāho vīraṃ śaktimatāṃ varam ..
"I know you, O mighty-armed hero, best of the powerful,
1.4.58.101
sarvarākṣasabhartāraṃ trailokye'mitavikramam .. 47 ..
master of all rākṣasas, of immeasurable prowess in the three worlds.
1.4.58.102
guhyakādhipatistvaṃ hi kālanābha iti smṛtaḥ ..
For you are the lord of the guhyakas, remembered as Kālanābha,
1.4.58.103
ṣaṣṭikoṭipatirjāto yakṣarakṣākṛte bhuvi .. 48 ..
born on earth as the master of sixty crores for the protection of yakṣas and rākṣasas.
1.4.58.104
iti māṃ prāha kāmākhyā sarvaṃ tatsaṃsmarāmyaham ..
Thus Kāmākhyā spoke to me; I remember all that.
1.4.58.105
idaṃ gehaṃ sānugaṃ me dattaṃ mayātmanā tava .. 49 ..
This house, along with my followers, is given by me, myself, to you.
1.4.58.106
samādiśa prāṇanātha kamādeśaṃ karomi te ..
Command me, O lord of my life; what order of yours shall I carry out?"
1.4.58.107
.. ghaṭotkaca uvāca .. ..
Ghaṭotkaca said:
1.4.58.108
pracchannastasya ghaṭate na vivāhaḥ kathaṃcana .. 1.2.60.50 ..
"A secret marriage is not fitting in any way
1.4.58.109
morvi yasya hi vartaṃte pitarau bāṃdhavāstathā ..
for one whose parents and kin are present, O Morvī.
1.4.58.110
tanmāṃ śīghraṃ vaha śubhe śakraprasthāya saṃprati .. 51 ..
Therefore carry me quickly now to Śakraprastha, O fair one.
1.4.58.111
ayaṃ kulakramo'smākaṃ yadbhāryā patimudvahet ..
This is the custom of our family, that a wife should carry her husband.
1.4.58.112
tatrānujñāṃ samāsādya pariṇeṣyāmi tvāmaham .. 52 ..
Having obtained permission there, I shall marry you."
1.4.58.113
bhagadattamatho nāthaṃ tato maurvī nyavedayat ..
Maurvī then informed the lord Bhagadatta;
1.4.58.114
samādāya bahudravyaṃ visasarjātha bhrātaram .. 53 ..
and taking much wealth, she then took leave of her brother.
1.4.58.115
tataḥ pṛṣṭhiṃ samāropya ghaṭotkacamaniṃditā ..
Then, having mounted Ghaṭotkaca upon her back, the blameless woman,
1.4.58.116
nānādravyaparīvārā śakraprasthaṃ samāvrajat .. 54 ..
accompanied by various kinds of wealth, traveled to Śakraprastha.
1.4.58.117
tato'sau vāsudevena pāṃḍavaiścābhinaṃditaḥ ..
Then he was welcomed by Vāsudeva and the Pāṇḍavas;
1.4.58.118
śubhe lagne pāṇimasyā jagṛhe bhīmanaṃdanaḥ .. 55 ..
at an auspicious moment, Bhīma's son took her hand,
1.4.58.119
kurūṇāṃ rākṣasānāṃ ca proktottamavidhānataḥ ..
according to the best prescribed rites of the Kurus and the rākṣasas.
1.4.58.120
udvāhya tāṃ taddhanaiśca tarpayāmāsa pāṃḍavān .. 56 ..
Having married her, he gratified the Pāṇḍavas with that wealth.
1.4.58.121
kuṃtī ca draupadī cobhe mumudāte nitāṃtataḥ ..
Both Kuntī and Draupadī rejoiced exceedingly;
1.4.58.122
maṃgalānyasya cakrāte maurvyāśca dhana tarpite .. 57 ..
gratified with wealth, they performed auspicious rites for him and Maurvī.
1.4.58.123
tato vivāhe nirvṛtte pratipūjya ghaṭotkacam ..
Then, when the marriage was completed, having honored Ghaṭotkaca
1.4.58.124
bhāryayā sahitaṃ rājā svarājyāya samādiśat .. 58 ..
together with his wife, the king directed him to his own kingdom.
1.4.58.125
maurvyā''jñāṃ śirasā gṛhya haiḍaṃbirbhāryayānvitaḥ ..
Taking the command upon their heads along with Maurvī, the son of Hiḍimbā, accompanied by his wife,
1.4.58.126
śubhaṃ hiḍambasya vane svarājyaṃ samupāvrajat ..59..
went to his own auspicious kingdom in the forest of Hiḍimba.
1.4.58.127
tato rākṣasayoṣābhirvīrakāṃsyaiḥ pravardhitaḥ..
Then, celebrated by the rākṣasa women with bronze vessels of heroes,
1.4.58.128
mahotsavena mahatā svarājye pramumoda saḥ ..1.2.60.60..
he rejoiced with a great festival in his own kingdom.
1.4.58.129
tato vaneṣu citreṣu nimnagāpulineṣu ca ..
Then, in wondrous forests and on the sandbanks of rivers,
1.4.58.130
reme saha tayā bhaimirmaṃdodaryeva rāvaṇaḥ .. 61 ..
Bhīma's son sported with her like Rāvaṇa with Mandodarī.
1.4.58.131
evaṃ vikrīḍatastasya garbho jajñe mahādyuteḥ..
As he was thus sporting, an embryo was conceived in her by that one of great splendor,
1.4.58.132
heḍaṃbai rākṣasavyāghrādbālasūryasamaprabhaḥ .. 62 ..
by that son of Hiḍimbā, tiger among rākṣasas, having the luster of the morning sun.
1.4.58.133
sa jātamātro vavṛdhe kṣaṇādyauvanago'bhavat ..
As soon as he was born, he grew, and in an instant he reached youth.
1.4.58.134
nīlameghacayaprakhyo ghaṭāsyo dīrghalocanaḥ .. 63 ..
Resembling a mass of blue clouds, with a face like a jar and large eyes,
1.4.58.135
ūrdhvakeśaścordhvaromā pitarau praṇato'bravīt ..
with hair standing erect and body hair pointing upward, he bowed to his parents and said:
1.4.58.136
praṇamāmi yuvāṃ cobhau jātasya pitarau gurū .. 64 ..
"I bow to both of you, my parents and gurus of my birth.
1.4.58.137
bhavatorhi priyaṃ kṛtvā anṛṇaḥ syāṃ sadā hyaham ..
Having done what is pleasing to you both, may I indeed always be free from debt.
1.4.58.138
bhavadbhyāṃ dattamicchāmi abhidhānaṃ yathātmanaḥ..65..
I desire a name for myself given by you both,
1.4.58.139
ataḥ paraṃ tu yacchreyaṃ kartavyaṃ pronnatipradam..
and after this, whatever is the highest good that grants advancement [to be done]."
1.4.58.140
tato bhemistamāliṃgya putraṃ vacanamabravīt ..66..
Then Bhīma's son embraced his son and spoke these words:
1.4.58.141
barbarākārakeśatvādbarbarīkābhidho bhavān ..
"Because your hair resembles that of a barbarian, you shall have the name Barbarīka;
1.4.58.142
bhaviṣyati mahābāho kulasyānandavardhanaḥ .. 67 ..
you shall be, O mighty-armed one, an enhancer of the family's joy.
1.4.58.143
śreyaśca te yatparamaṃ dṛḍhaṃ ca tatkīrtyate bahudhā vipra mukhyaiḥ ..
And what is your highest and firm good is praised in many ways by eminent brahmins;
1.4.58.144
prakṣyāvahe tadyaduvaṃśanāthaṃ gatvā purīṃ dvārakāṃ vāsudevam .. 68 ..
having gone to the city of Dvārakā, we two shall ask Vāsudeva, the lord of the Yadu lineage, about that."
1.4.58.145
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ prathame māheśvarakhaṇḍe kaumārikākhaṃḍe barbarīkotpattivarṇanaṃnāma ṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 60 ..
Thus ends the sixtieth chapter, named 'The Description of the Birth of Barbarīka', in the Kaumārikākhaṇḍa of the first [section], the Māheśvarakhaṇḍa, in the Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
