balaṃ sādhaya pūrvaṃ tvamatulaṃ tena śikṣaya .. 23 ..
First attain unequaled strength; through that, chastise (23)
1.4.59.52

the wicked and protect the virtuous; thus you will attain heaven.

Sūta said:
1.4.59.59
iti pṛṣṭaḥ kṣaṇaṃ dhyātvā prāha dāmodaro vibhuḥ ..
Thus asked, the all-pervading Dāmodara, having meditated for a moment, said:
1.4.59.60
vatsa kṣetraṃ pravakṣyāmi yatra tapsyasi tattapaḥ ..
"Dear child, I will tell you the sacred field where you will perform that austerity.
1.4.59.61
guptakṣetramiti khyātaṃ mahīsāgarasaṃgame .. 27 ..
It is known as the Guptakṣetra, at the confluence of the Mahī and the ocean. (27)"
1.4.59.62
tatra tribhuvane yāśca saṃti devyaḥ pṛthagvidhāḥ ..
The various goddesses who are in the three worlds,
1.4.59.63
nāradena samānītāstāścaikyaṃ sumahātmanā .. 28 ..
were brought together into unity there by the great-souled Nārada.
1.4.59.64
catasrastasya digdevyo nava durgāśca saṃti yāḥ ..
There are the four goddesses of the cardinal directions and the nine Durgās;
1.4.59.65
samārādhaya tā gatvā tāsāmaikyaṃ hi durlabham .. 29 ..
go and worship them, for their assembly is rare to attain.
1.4.59.66
nityaṃ pūjaya tāḥ putra puṣpadhūpavilepanaiḥ ..
Worship them daily, my son, with flowers, incense, and unguents,
1.4.59.67
stutibhiścopahāraiśca yathā tuṣyati tāstava .. 1.2.61.30 ..
and with hymns of praise and offerings, so that they may be pleased with you.
1.4.59.68
tuṣṭāsu devīṣu balaṃ dhanaṃ ca kīrtiśca putrāḥ subhagāśca dārāḥ ..
When the goddesses are pleased, strength, wealth, renown, sons, and fortunate wives,
1.4.59.69
svargastathā muktipadaṃ ca satsukhaṃ na durlabhaṃ satyametattavoktam .. 31 ..
as well as heaven and the state of liberation, true happiness, are not difficult to attain; this truth has been told to you."

.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
1.4.59.71
evamuktvā barbarīkaṃ kṛṣṇaḥ prāha ghaṭotkacam ..
Having spoken thus to Barbarīka, Kṛṣṇa addressed Ghaṭotkaca:
1.4.59.72
ghaṭotkacārya putraste dṛḍhaṃ suhṛdayo hyasau .. 32 ..
"Noble Ghaṭotkaca, this son of yours truly has a firm, good heart;
1.4.59.73
tasmātsuhṛdayetyevaṃ dattaṃ nāma mayā dvikam ..
therefore, 'Suhṛdaya' ('Good-hearted') is the second name given [to him] by me."
1.4.59.74
evamuktvā samāliṃgya saṃtarjya vividhairdhanaiḥ .. 33 ..
Having spoken thus, embracing [him] and gratifying [him] with various riches,
1.4.59.75
guptakṣetrāya bhagavānbarbarīkaṃ samādiśat ..
the Lord directed Barbarīka to the Guptakṣetra.
1.4.59.76
so'tha kṛṣṇaṃ namaskṛtya pitaraṃ yādavāṃśca tān .. 34 ..
He then bowed to Kṛṣṇa, to his father, and to those Yādavas,
1.4.59.77
anujñāpya ca tānsarvānguptakṣetraṃ samāvrajat ..
and having taken leave of them all, he proceeded to the Guptakṣetra.
1.4.59.78
ghaṭotkaco'pi kṛṣṇena visṛṣṭaḥ svavanaṃ yayau .. 35 ..
Ghaṭotkaca too, dismissed by Kṛṣṇa, went to his own forest;
1.4.59.79
smaranputraguṇānpatnyā svarājyaṃ samapālayat ..
remembering the virtues of his son with his wife, he protected his realm.
1.4.59.80
tataḥ suhṛdayo dhīmāndagdhasthalyāṃ kṛtāśramaḥ .. 36 ..
Then the wise Suhṛdaya, having made his hermitage at Dagdhasthalī,
1.4.59.81
trikālaṃ pūjayāmāsa devīḥ karmasamādhibhiḥ ..
worshipped the goddesses at the three junctures of the day with absorption in ritual action,
1.4.59.82
nityaṃ puṣpaiśca dhūpaiśca upahāraiḥ pṛthagvidhaiḥ .. 37 ..
constantly with flowers, incense, and various offerings.
1.4.59.83
tasyārādhayato devyastutuṣurhāyanaistribhiḥ ..
As he worshipped them, the goddesses were pleased after three years.
1.4.59.84
tataḥ pratyakṣato bhūtvā balāttasya mahātmanaḥ .. 38 ..
Then, having appeared manifestly, by their power to that great-souled one [they gave]
1.4.59.85
balaṃ yattriṣu lokeṣu kasyacinnāsti durlabham ..
strength which belongs to no one in the three worlds and is hard to attain.
1.4.59.86
ūcuśca kaṃcitkālaṃ tvaṃ vasātraiva mahādyute .. 39 ..
And they said: "Dwell right here for some time, O one of great splendour;
1.4.59.87
saṃgatyā vijayasya tvaṃ bhūyaḥ śreyo hyavāpsyasi ..
through the companionship of Vijaya, you will indeed attain even greater welfare."
1.4.59.88
ityuktaḥ sarvadevībhiḥ sa tatraiva vyavasthitaḥ ..1.2.61.40 ..
Addressed thus by all the goddesses, he remained right there.
1.4.59.89
ājagāmātha vijayo nāmnā māgadhabrāhmaṇaḥ ..
Then there arrived a Magadhan brahmin named Vijaya;
1.4.59.90
sa sarvāṃ pṛthivīṃ kṛtvā pādākrāṃtāṃ dvijottamaḥ .. 41 ..
that best of the twice-born, having traversed the whole earth on foot,
1.4.59.91
kāśyāṃ vidyābalaṃ prāpya sādhanārthamupāyayau ..
and having obtained the power of spells in Kāśī, came for the sake of accomplishing [the rite].
1.4.59.92
guheśvaramukhānyeṣa saptaliṃgānyapūjayat .. ..42..
He worshipped seven liṅgas, beginning with Guheśvara;
1.4.59.93
ārādhayāmāsa ciraṃ devīrvidyāphalāptaye..
he worshipped the goddesses for a long time to obtain the fruit of the spells.
1.4.59.94
tatastuṣṭāstasya devyaḥ svapne procuridaṃ vacaḥ..43..
Then, pleased with him, the goddesses spoke these words in a dream:
1.4.59.95
vidyāṃ sādhaya tvaṃ sādho siddhamātuḥ puroṃ'gaṇe ..
"O virtuous one, accomplish the spell in the courtyard before Siddhāmātā;
1.4.59.96
ayaṃ bhaktaḥ suhṛdayaḥ sāhāyyaṃ te kariṣyati .. 44 ..
this devotee Suhṛdaya will assist you."
1.4.59.97
tatastadvacanaṃ śrutvā vijayaḥ svapnamadhyataḥ ..
Then, having heard that speech from within the dream,
1.4.59.98
utthāya gatvā devyāstaṃ vavre bhīmātma jātmajam .. 45 ..
Vijaya arose, went to the Goddess, and chose that grandson of Bhīma.
1.4.59.99
so'pi devīvacaḥ śrutvā mene sāhāyyakāraṇam ..
He too, having heard the command of the Goddess, agreed to be an assistant.
1.4.59.100
tataḥ kṛṣṇacaturdaśyāmupoṣya vijayaḥ śuciḥ .. 46 ..
Then on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, Vijaya, having fasted and purified himself,
1.4.59.101
snātvābhyarcyaiva liṃgāni devīścaivārcayatpṛthak ..
bathed and worshipped the liṅgas, and separately worshipped the goddesses.
1.4.59.102
kṛtvā snānamupoṣyaiva barbarīkoṃ'tike'bhavat .. 47 ..
Barbarīka, having performed ritual ablution and fasted, stood near him.
1.4.59.103
prathamāyāṃ tato rātrau yayau siddhāṃbikāpuraḥ ..
Then in the first watch of the night, he went before Siddhāmbikā,
1.4.59.104
maṃḍalaṃ tatra kṛtvā ca bhagākāraṃ karānnava .. 48 ..
and having drawn a maṇḍala there nine cubits in size in the shape of a yoni,
1.4.59.105
aṣṭadikṣvaṣṭakīlāṃśca nikhanyaiva sasūtrakān ..
and having driven eight pegs tied with cords into the eight directions,
1.4.59.106
kṛṣṇājinadharo bhūtvā barbarīkasamanvitaḥ .. 49 ..
wearing a black antelope skin, accompanied by Barbarīka,
1.4.59.107
śikhāmābaddhya digbaṃdhaṃ kṛtvā rebhe tato vidhim ..
having tied up his topknot and formed the protective barrier of directions, he then began the rite.
1.4.59.108
madhye vai maṃḍalasyāpi kuṃḍe śubhre trimekhalaṃ .. 1.2.61.50 ..
In the middle of the maṇḍala, in a bright fire-pit with three girdles,
1.4.59.109
samarpya ca tataḥ khaḍgaṃ khādiraṃ maṃtratejitam ..
having offered [oblations], and then having consecrated a sword of khadira wood with mantras,
1.4.59.110
saṃsthāpya kīlānabhito barbarīkamathābravīt .. 51 ..
and having established the pegs all around, he then spoke to Barbarīka:
1.4.59.111
śucirvinidraḥ saṃtiṣṭha stavaṃ devyāḥ samudgiran ..
"Pure and sleepless, remain standing while chanting the praise of the Goddess,
1.4.59.112
yāvatkarma karomyeṣa yathā vighnaṃ na jāyate .. 52 ..
so long as I perform this rite, so that no obstacle arises."
1.4.59.113
ityukte saṃsthite tatra barbarīke mahābale ..
When Barbarīka of great strength remained standing there as spoken,
1.4.59.114
vijayaḥ śoṣaṇaṃ dāhaṃ plāvanaṃ kṛtavānyamī .. 53 ..
the self-restrained Vijaya performed the desiccating, the burning, and the flooding.
1.4.59.115
tataḥ sukhāsano bhūtvā guṃgurubhyo namaḥ iti ..
Then, comfortably seated, uttering 'Guṃ, salutations to the gurus,'
1.4.59.116
maṃtramaṣṭottaraśataṃ japtvā gurubhyaḥ praṇamya ca ..
he chanted the mantra one hundred and eight times, bowed to the gurus,
1.4.59.117
tato gaṇeśvaravidhānamārabdhavān .. 54 ..
and then commenced the rite of Gaṇeśvara.
1.4.59.118
athātaḥ saṃpravakṣyāmi maṃtraṃ gaṇapateḥ param .. 55 ..
"Now, therefore, I will proclaim the supreme mantra of Gaṇapati,
1.4.59.119
sarvakāryakaraṃ svalpaṃ mahārthaṃ sarvasiddhidam .. 56 ..
which accomplishes all tasks, is brief, carries great meaning, and bestows all perfections:
1.4.59.120
oṃgāṃgīṃgūṃgaiṃgauṃgaḥ saptākṣaro'yaṃ mahāmaṃtraḥ ..
'Oṃ gāṃ gīṃ gūṃ gaiṃ gauṃ gaḥ'—this is the great seven-syllable mantra.
1.4.59.121
oṃgaṇapatimaṃtrasya gaṇako nāma ṛṣiḥ vighneśvaro devatā gaṃ bījam oṃśaktiḥ pūjārthe japārthe vā tilakārthe vā manasa īpsitārthe homārthe vā viniyoga iti ..
Of the Oṃ-Gaṇapati mantra, the seer is Gaṇaka; the deity is Vighneśvara; the seed-syllable is gaṃ; the energy is oṃ; the application is for worship, for recitation, for applying the forehead mark, for the heart's desired purpose, or for the fire oblation."
1.4.59.122
sādha kasya pūrvaṃ tilakakaraṇam ..
First, the practitioner applies the tilaka.
1.4.59.123
oṃgāṃgaṇapataye namaḥ ..
“Oṃ gāṃ, homage to Gaṇapati.”
1.4.59.124
iti tilakasyopari akṣatāndadyāt anena mantreṇa ..
With this mantra, he should place unbroken grains of rice upon the tilaka:
1.4.59.125
oṃ gāṃgaṇapataye namaḥ ..
“Oṃ gāṃ, homage to Gaṇapati.”
1.4.59.126
iti tilakamaṃtraḥ ..
This is the tilaka mantra.
1.4.59.127
oṃgāṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ ..
“Oṃ gāṃ, homage to Gaṇapati.”
1.4.59.128
anena maṃtreṇa gaṇeśāya puṣpāṃjalitrayaṃ dadyāt ..
With this mantra, he should offer three double handfuls of flowers to Gaṇeśa.
1.4.59.129
mūlamaṃtreṇātra caṃdanagaṃdhapuṣpadhūpadīpanaivedyapūgīphala tāṃbūlādikaṃ dadyāt ..
With the root-mantra, he should offer sandalwood paste, perfumes, flowers, incense, a lamp, food-offerings, betel nut, betel leaves, and the rest.
1.4.59.130
ata ūrdhvaṃ mūlamantreṇa japaṃ kuryāt ..
After this, he should perform recitation using the root-mantra.
1.4.59.131
aṣṭottaraśataṃ sahasraṃ lakṣaṃ koṭiṃ ceti yathāśakti japtvā daśāṃśahomārthe gaṇeśāgnaye āvāhayāmīti agnimāvāhya ..
Having recited one hundred and eight, a thousand, a hundred thousand, or ten million times according to his capacity, he invokes the fire for the sake of the tenth-part fire sacrifice, saying, “I invoke [the fire] for Gaṇeśa's fire”;
1.4.59.132
oṃ gāṃ gaṇapataye svāheti mantreṇa guggulaguṭikābhirhomaṃ vidadhyādviniyogaṃ ceti gāṇeśvaro tā?kalpaḥ ..
and with the mantra, “Oṃ gāṃ, to Gaṇapati, svāhā,” he should perform the fire sacrifice with pellets of bdellium and recite the ritual application. Such is the ritual procedure of Gaṇeśa.
1.4.59.133
ya evaṃ sarva vighneṣu sādhayenmantramuttamam ..
Whoever thus masters this supreme mantra amid all obstacles—
1.4.59.134
sarvavighnāni naśyaṃti manobhīṣṭaṃ ca sidhyati .. 57 ..
all his obstacles are destroyed, and his heart's desire is fulfilled. (57)
1.4.59.135
ḍākinyo yātudhānāśca pretādyāśca bhayaṃkarāḥ ..
Ḍākinīs, yātudhānas, and terrifying spirits such as pretas [are averted];
1.4.59.136
śatrūṇāṃ jāyate nāśo vaśīkaraṇameva ca .. 58 ..
the destruction of enemies takes place, as well as their subjugation. (58)
1.4.59.137
imaṃ gāṇeśvaraṃ kalpaṃ vijānanvijayo'pi ca ..
Knowing this ritual procedure of Gaṇeśa, Vijaya too,
1.4.59.138
tilakaṃ vidhinā kṛtvā japtvā cāṣṭottaraṃ śatam .. 59 ..
having applied the tilaka according to the rule and recited [the mantra] one hundred and eight times, (59)
1.4.59.139
daśāṃśaṃ guṭikā hutvā pūjya siddhivināyakam ..
having offered a tenth part in pellets into the fire and worshipped Siddhivināyaka,
1.4.59.140
siddheyakṣetrapālasya cakre pūjāṃ tato niśi .. 1.2.61.60 ..
