Īśvara said:
Then one should go, O great goddess, to Parṇāditya, the lord of gods,
situated on the northern bank, on the shore of the eastern Sarasvatī.

Formerly in the Tretā age, O goddess, a twice-born named Parṇāda,
having reached Prabhāsa kṣetra, performed severe austerity;
endowed with supreme devotion, he worshipped the Sun.
16.259.3
tarpayitvā tataḥ sūryaṃ dhūpamālyavilepanaiḥ ..
vedoktaiḥ stavanaiḥ sūktairdivārātraṃ samāhitaḥ .. 3 ..
Having then propitiated the Sun with incense, garlands, and ointments,
with Vedic praises and hymns, he remained composed day and night.

As he was meditating thus, after a long time,
the blessed Sun was pleased and spoke this speech:

varaṃ varaya bhadraṃ te nityaṃ yanmanasepsitam.. 5 ..
'I am well pleased, O best of brahmins, by this austerity, O one of good vows.
Choose a boon—may it be well with you—whatever is always desired in your heart.'
16.259.6
.. brāhmaṇa uvāca .. ..
eṣa eva varaḥ kāmo yattuṣṭo bhagavānsvayam ..
darśanaṃ tava deveśa svapneṣvapi ca durllabham.. 6 ..
The brahmin said:
'This itself is the boon and wish: that the Blessed Lord himself is pleased.
Darśana of you, O lord of gods, is difficult to attain even in dreams.
16.259.7
avaśyaṃ yadi dātavyo varo mama divākara ..
atra saṃnihato deva sadā tvaṃ bhava bhāskara .. 7 ..
If a boon must certainly be given to me, O Maker of Day,
be ever present here, O divine Bhāskara!
16.259.8
tava prasādātte yāṃtu tava lokaṃ divā kara ..
evaṃ bhaviṣyatītyuktvā hyantardhānaṃ gato raviḥ .. 8 ..
By your grace, may they go to your world, O Maker of Day!'
Having said, 'So it shall be,' the Sun vanished.

tatra bhādrapade māse ṣaṣṭhyāṃ snānaṃ samācaret ..
parṇādityaṃ tataḥ paśyenna sa duḥkhamavāpnuyāt .. 9 ..
Parṇāda too remained there, intent upon his worship.
There, in the month of Bhādrapada, on the sixth lunar day, one should perform ritual ablution;
then one should view Parṇāditya—he would not suffer distress.

a mortal obtains that fruit from the darśana of Parṇāditya.

parṇādityaṃ na jānaṃti nūnaṃ te maṃdabuddhayaḥ .. 11 ..
Those who suffer from severe leprosy, lameness, and scabs,
and do not know of Parṇāditya—surely they are dull of intellect.
