While king Dharmagupta was wandering in that forest,
2.1.13.24
abhūdvibhāvarī viprāstamasāvṛtadiṅmukhā .. 11 ..
the night fell, O brahmins, its quarters enveloped in darkness. (11)
2.1.13.25
rājā'pi paścimāṃ sandhyāmupāsya vinayānvitaḥ ..
The king also, endowed with modesty, having performed the evening worship,
2.1.13.26
jajāpa ca vane tatra gāyatrīṃ vedamātaram .. 12 ..
chanted the Gāyatrī, the mother of the Vedas, there in the forest. (12)
2.1.13.27
siṃhavyāghrādibhītyāsminvṛkṣamekaṃ samāśrite ..
When he had taken shelter in a certain tree out of fear of lions, tigers, and others,

a bear, tormented by fear of a lion, approached that prince. (13)

2.1.13.31
āruhya ṛkṣo vṛkṣaṃ taṃ dadarśa jagatīpatim ..
Having climbed the tree, the bear saw the lord of the earth,
2.1.13.32
vṛkṣasthitaṃ mahātmānaṃ mahābalaparākramam .. 15 ..
the great-souled one stationed in the tree, possessing great strength and valor. (15)
2.1.13.33
uvāca bhūpatiṃ dṛṣṭvā ṛkṣoyaṃ vanagocaraḥ ..
Having seen the king, that bear living in the forest said:
2.1.13.34
mā bhītiṃ kuru rājeṃdra vatsyāvo rajanīmiha .. 16 ..
“Do not fear, O best of kings! We two shall spend the night here. (16)
2.1.13.35
mahāsattvo mahākāyo mahādaṃṣṭrasamākulaḥ ..
Endowed with great courage and a huge body, possessing massive fangs,
2.1.13.36
vṛkṣamūlaṃ samāyātaḥ siṃho'yamatibhīṣaṇaḥ .. 17 ..
this very terrible lion has arrived at the foot of the tree. (17)
2.1.13.37
rātryardhaṃ bhaja nidrāṃ tvaṃ rakṣyamāṇo mayodyataḥ ..
Sleep for half the night, being protected by me, who am ready.
2.1.13.38
tataḥ prasuptaṃ māṃ rakṣa śarvaryardhaṃ mahāmate .. 18 ..
Then, O wise one, protect me while I sleep for half the night.” (18)
2.1.13.39
iti tadvākyamākarṇya supte nandasute hariḥ ..
Having heard those words, while Nanda's son was asleep, the lion
2.1.13.40
provāca ṛkṣaṃ supto'yaṃ nṛpo me tyajyatāmiti .. 19 ..
said to the bear: “Cast down to me this sleeping king!” (19)
2.1.13.41
taṃ siṃhamabravīdṛkṣo dharmajño dvijasattamāḥ ..
The righteous bear said to that lion, O best of the twice-born:
2.1.13.42
bhavāndharmaṃ na jānīte mṛgarāja vanecara .. 2.1.13.20 ..
“You do not know righteousness, O forest-dwelling king of beasts! (20)
2.1.13.43
viśvāsaghātināṃ loke mahākaṣṭaṃ bhavatyaho ..
Ah, great suffering befalls those who betray trust in the world.
2.1.13.44
na hi mitradruhāṃ pāpaṃ naśyedyajñāyutairapi .. 21 ..
Indeed, the sin of those who harm a friend cannot be destroyed even by ten thousand sacrifices. (21)
2.1.13.45
brahmahatyādipāpānāṃ kathañcinniṣkṛtirbhavet ..
There may somehow be expiation for sins such as the slaying of a brahmin,
2.1.13.46
viśvāsaghātināṃ pāpaṃ na naśyejjanmakoṭibhiḥ .. 22 ..
but the sin of betrayers of trust cannot be destroyed even in ten million births. (22)
2.1.13.47
nāhaṃ meruṃ mahābhāraṃ manye pañcāsya bhūtale ..
I do not consider Meru to be a great burden on earth, O lion;
2.1.13.48
mahābhāramimaṃ manye lokaviśvāsaghātakam .. 23 ..
I consider this person who betrays the trust of people to be the great burden.” (23)
2.1.13.49
evamukto'tha ṛkṣeṇa siṃhastūṣṇīṃ babhūva ha ..
Spoken to thus by the bear, the lion became silent indeed.
2.1.13.50
dharmagupte prabuddhe tu ṛkṣaḥ suṣvāpa bhūruhe .. 24 ..
When Dharmagupta awakened, the bear slept in the tree. (24)
2.1.13.51
tataḥ siṃho'bravīdbhūpamenamṛkṣaṃ tyajasva me ..
Then the lion said to the king: “Abandon this bear to me!”
2.1.13.52
evamukto'tha siṃhena rājā suptamaśaṃkitaḥ .. 25 ..
Addressed thus by the lion, the king, without hesitation, (25)
2.1.13.53
svāṃkanyastaśiraskaṃ tamṛkṣaṃ tatyāja bhūtale ..
cast that sleeping bear onto the ground, whose head was resting in his lap.
2.1.13.54
pātyamānastato rājñā samālambitapādapaḥ .. 26 ..
Being thrown down then by the king, clinging to the tree, (26)
2.1.13.55
ṛkṣaḥ puṇyavaśādvṛkṣānna papāta mahītale ..
the bear, by the power of merit, did not fall to the ground from the tree.
2.1.13.56
sa ṛkṣo nṛpamabhyetya kopādvākyamabhāṣata .. 27 ..
That bear approached the king and spoke these words in anger: (27)
2.1.13.57
kāmarūpadharo rājannahaṃ bhṛgukulodbhavaḥ ..
“Capable of assuming forms at will, O king, I was born in the lineage of Bhṛgu.
2.1.13.58
dhyānakāṣṭhābhidho nāmnā ṛkṣarūpamadhārayam .. 28 ..
Named Dhyānakāṣṭha, I assumed the form of a bear. (28)
2.1.13.59
kasmādanāgasaṃ suptamatyākṣīnmāṃ bhavānnṛpa ..
Why did you abandon me, sleeping and innocent, O king?
2.1.13.60
macchāpādatiśīghraṃ tvamunmattaścara bhūtale .. 29 ..
By my curse, wander on the earth exceedingly fast as a madman!” (29)
2.1.13.61
iti śaptvā munirbhūpaṃ tataḥ siṃhamabhāṣata ..
Having thus cursed the king, the sage then addressed the lion:
2.1.13.62
na siṃhastvaṃ mahāyakṣaḥ kuberasacivaḥ purā .. 2.1.13.30 ..
“You are not a lion; formerly you were a great yakṣa, a minister of Kubera. (30)”
2.1.13.63
himavadgirimāsādya kadācittaṃ vadhūsakhaḥ ..
Once, having gone to the Himavat mountain accompanied by your wife,
2.1.13.64
ajñānādgautamābhyāśe vihāramatanormudā .. 31 ..
you indulged in amorous sport joyfully out of ignorance near Gautama.
2.1.13.65
gautamo'pyuṭajāddaivātsamidāharaṇāya vai ..
Gautama too, coming out from his hut by chance to gather sacrificial firewood,
2.1.13.66
nirgatastvāṃ vivasanaṃ dṛṣṭvā śāpamudāharat .. 32 ..
saw you naked and pronounced a curse:
2.1.13.67
yasmānmamāśrame'dya tvaṃ vivastraḥ sthitavānasi ..
"Since you have remained without clothes today in my hermitage,
2.1.13.68
ataḥ siṃhatvamadyaiva bhavitā te na saṃśayaḥ .. 33 ..
therefore you will surely become a lion this very day, without doubt."
2.1.13.69
iti gautamaśāpena siṃhatvamagamatpurā ..
Thus, by Gautama's curse, you became a lion long ago.
2.1.13.70
kuberasacivo yakṣo bhadranāmā bhavānpurā .. 34 ..
In the past you were a yakṣa named Bhadra, a minister of Kubera.
2.1.13.71
kubero dharmaśīlo hi tadbhṛtyāśca tathaiva hi ..
Kubera is indeed virtuous in conduct, and his servants are likewise so.
2.1.13.72
ataḥ kimarthaṃ tvaṃ haṃsi māmṛṣiṃ vanagocaram .. 35 ..
Therefore, why do you kill me, a seer dwelling in the forest?
2.1.13.73
etatsarvamahaṃ dhyānājjānāmi hi mṛgādhipa ..
All this indeed I know through meditation, O king of beasts!
2.1.13.74
ityukto dhyānakāṣṭhena tyaktvā siṃhatvamāśu saḥ .. .. 36 ..
Addressed thus by Dhyānakāṣṭha, he quickly cast off his state of being a lion,
2.1.13.75
yakṣarūpaṃ gato divyaṃ kuberasacivātmakam ..
and assumed the divine form of a yakṣa, the minister of Kubera.
2.1.13.76
dhyānakāṣṭhamasāvāha prāṃjaliḥ praṇato munim .. 37 ..
With folded hands, bowed down, he said to the sage Dhyānakāṣṭha:
2.1.13.77
adya jñātaṃ mayā sarvaṃ pūrvavṛttaṃ mahāmune ..
"Today I have known everything of my past deeds, O great sage!
2.1.13.78
gautamaḥ śāpakāle me śāpāntamapi coktavān .. 38 ..
At the time of the curse, Gautama also told me the end of the curse:
2.1.13.79
dhyānakāṣṭhena saṃvāda ṛkṣarūpeṇa te yadā ..
'When you have a conversation with Dhyānakāṣṭha in the form of a bear,
2.1.13.80
tadā nirdhūya siṃhatvaṃ yakṣarūpamavāpsyasi .. 39 ..
then, having shaken off your lion-state, you will regain your yakṣa form.'
2.1.13.81
iti māmabravīdbrahmangautamo munipuṅgavaḥ ..
Thus Gautama, the foremost among sages, spoke to me, O brahmin.
2.1.13.82
adya siṃhatvanāśānme jānāmi tvāṃ mahāmune .. 2.1.13.40 ..
Now, because my lion-state has been destroyed, I recognise you, O great sage,
2.1.13.83
dhyānakāṣṭhābhidhaṃ śuddhaṃ kāmarūpadharaṃ sadā ..
who are named Dhyānakāṣṭha, pure, and capable of assuming any form at will."
2.1.13.84
ityuktvā taṃ praṇamyātha dhyānakāṣṭhaṃ sa yakṣarāṭ .. 41 ..
Having spoken thus and then bowed down to Dhyānakāṣṭha, that lord of yakṣas
2.1.13.85
vimānavaramāruhya prayayāvalakāpurīm ..
mounted an excellent aerial chariot and departed for the city of Alakā.
2.1.13.86
unmattarūpaṃ taṃ dṛṣṭvā mantriṇastu nṛpottamam.. .. 42 ..
Seeing that best of kings looking like a madman,
2.1.13.87
pituḥ sakāśamāninyū revātīre nṛpottamam ..
the ministers brought that best of kings to the presence of his father on the bank of the Revā.
2.1.13.88
tasmai nivedayāmāsurmatibhraṃśaṃ sutasya ca .. 43 ..
They reported to him the loss of his son's mind.
2.1.13.89
jñātvā tu putravṛttāntaṃ pitā vai naṃdanastadā .. 44 ..
Upon learning the account of his son, the father, Nanda,
2.1.13.90
.. atha jaiminivākyātsvāmitīrthasnātasya dharmaguptasyonmādanivṛttiḥ .. ..
Now follows the cure of Dharmagupta's madness upon bathing in the sacred ford Svāmitīrtha according to Jaimini's words.
2.1.13.91
putramādāya sahasā jaiminerantikaṃ yayau ..
swiftly took his son and went to the presence of Jaimini.
2.1.13.92
tasmai nivedayāmāsa putravṛttāntamāditaḥ .. 45 ..
He related the entire story of his son to him from the beginning:
2.1.13.93
bhagavañjaimine putro mamādyonmattatāṃ gataḥ ..
"O venerable Jaimini, today my son has fallen into madness.
2.1.13.94
asyonmādavināśāya brūhyupāyaṃ mahāmune .. 46 ..
Speak of a means for the destruction of his madness, O great sage!"
2.1.13.95
iti pṛṣṭaściraṃ dadhyau jaiminirmunipuṃgavaḥ ..
Being questioned thus, Jaimini, the foremost of sages, meditated for a long time.
2.1.13.96
dhyātvā tu suciraṃ kālaṃ nṛpanandanamabravīt .. 47 ..
Having meditated for a very long time, he spoke to King Nanda:
2.1.13.97
dhyānakāṣṭhasya śāpena hyunmattaste suto'bhavat ..
"Your son has indeed become mad due to the curse of Dhyānakāṣṭha.
2.1.13.98
tasya śāpasya mokṣārthamupāyaṃ prabravīmi te .. 48 ..
I shall tell you a remedy for release from that curse.
2.1.13.99
suvarṇamukharītīre veṃkaṭenāma parvate ..
On the bank of the Suvarṇamukharī, on the mountain named Veṅkaṭa,
2.1.13.100
sarvapāpahare puṇye nānādhātuvinirmite .. 49 ..
which removes all sins, is meritorious, and is fashioned of various minerals,
2.1.13.101
svāmipuṣkariṇī ceti tīrthamasti mahattaram ..
there is a most great sacred ford called Svāmipuṣkariṇī,
2.1.13.102
pavitrāṇāṃ pavitraṃ hi maṃgalānāṃ ca maṃgalam .. 2.1.13.50 ..
the purest of the pure and the most auspicious of auspicious things,
2.1.13.103
śrutisiddhaṃ mahāpuṇyaṃ brahmahatyādiśodhakam ..
established by the Vedas, highly meritorious, and purifying the murder of a brahmin and other [sins].
2.1.13.104
nītvā tatra sutaṃ te'dya snāpayasva mahāmate .. 51 ..
Taking your son there today, O wise one, bathe him.
2.1.13.105
unmādastatkṣaṇādeva tasya naśyenna saṃśayaḥ ..
His madness will perish that very moment; there is no doubt."
2.1.13.106
ityuktastaṃ praṇamyāsau jaiminiṃ munipuṃgavam .. 52 ..
Addressed thus, he bowed down to Jaimini, the foremost of sages.
2.1.13.107
nandaḥ putraṃ samādāya svāmipuṣkariṇīṃ yayau ..
Taking his son, Nanda went to the Svāmipuṣkariṇī.
2.1.13.108
tatra ca snāpayāmāsa putraṃ niyamapūrvakam .. 53 ..
And there he bathed his son in accordance with the prescribed rules.
2.1.13.109
snānamātrāttataḥ sadyo naṣṭonmādo'bhavatsutaḥ ..
Immediately upon the mere bathing, the son had his madness destroyed.
2.1.13.110
svayaṃ sasnau sa nando'pi svāmipuṣkariṇījale .. 54 ..
Nanda himself also bathed in the water of the Svāmipuṣkariṇī.
2.1.13.111
uṣitvā dinamekaṃ tu sahaputraḥ pitā tadā ..
Then, having dwelt there for one day, the father along with his son,
2.1.13.112
sevitvā veṃkaṭeśaṃ ca śrīnivāsaṃ kṛpānidhim .. 55 ..
having worshipped Veṅkaṭeśa, Śrīnivāsa, the storehouse of compassion,
2.1.13.113
putramāpṛcchya nandastaṃ prayayau tapase vanam ..
Nanda took leave of his son and departed to the forest for austerity.
2.1.13.114
gate pitari putro'pi dharmagupto nṛpo dvijāḥ .. 56 ..
When his father had departed, the son, King Dharmagupta, O twice-born ones,
2.1.13.115
pradadau veṃkaṭeśasya bahuvittāni bhaktitaḥ ..
gave vast wealth to Veṅkaṭeśa with devotion.
2.1.13.116
brāhmaṇebhyo dhanaṃ dhānyaṃ kṣetrāṇi ca dadau tadā .. 57 ..
He then gave money, grain, and fields to brahmins.
2.1.13.117
prayayau mantribhiḥ sārdhaṃ svāṃ purīṃ tadanantaram ..
Thereafter he departed to his own capital together with his ministers.
2.1.13.118
dharmeṇa pālayāmāsa rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam .. 58 ..
He ruled according to righteousness the kingdom, whose thorns had been eradicated,
2.1.13.119
pitṛpaitāmahaṃ viprā dharmaguptotidhārmikaḥ ..
inherited from his father and grandfather, O brahmins, being exceedingly righteous Dharmagupta.
2.1.13.120
unmādairapyapasmārairgrahairduṣṭaiśca ye narāḥ .. 59 ..
Whatever men are seized by forms of madness, by epilepsy,
2.1.13.121
grastā bhavanti viprendrāste'pi cātra nimajjanāt ..
and by malevolent spirits, O best of brahmins, they too, by plunging here
2.1.13.122
puṣkariṇyāṃ vimuktāḥ syuḥ satyaṃ satyaṃ vadāmyaham .. 2.1.13.60 ..
into the puṣkariṇī, become liberated: I speak the truth, the truth!"
2.1.13.123
svāmipuṣkariṇīṃ tyaktvā tīrthamanyadvrajettu yaḥ ..
Whoever, forsaking the Svāmipuṣkariṇī, goes to another sacred ford,
2.1.13.124
snigdhaṃ sa gopayastyaktvā snuhīkṣīraṃ prayācate .. 61 ..
forsakes rich cow's milk and begs for the sap of the spurge.
2.1.13.125
svāmitīrthaṃ svāmitīrthaṃ svāmitīrthamiti dvijāḥ ..
"Svāmitīrtha, Svāmitīrtha, Svāmitīrtha!"—O twice-born,
2.1.13.126
triḥpaṭhanto narā evaṃ yatra kvāpi jalāśaye .. 62 ..
reciting this three times, in whatever body of water
2.1.13.127
snāṃti sarve narāste vai yāsyanti brahmaṇaḥ padam ..
men bathe, all those men will surely go to the abode of Brahmā.
2.1.13.128
evaṃ vaḥ kathitā viprā dharmaguptakathā śubhā .. 63 ..
Thus has the auspicious narrative of Dharmagupta been told to you, O brahmins,
2.1.13.129
yasyāḥ śravaṇamātreṇa brahmahatyā vinaśyati .. .. 64 ..
by the mere hearing of which the sin of killing a brahmin is destroyed.
2.1.13.130
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīveṃkaṭācalamāhālye svāmipuṣkariṇīmahimānuvarṇanaṃnāma trayodaśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 13 .. cha ..
Thus ends the thirteenth chapter, entitled 'Description of the Glory of the Svāmipuṣkariṇī', in the Venkaṭācala-māhātmya of the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a compendium of eighty-one thousand [verses].
