2.1.16.1
.. atha śrīveṃkaṭādrau jaladānapraśaṃsā ..
Now begins the praise of the gift of water on glorious Mount Venkaṭa.
2.1.16.2
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The glorious Sūta said:
2.1.16.3
veṃkaṭākhye mahāpuṇye tṛṣārtānāṃ viśeṣataḥ ..
On the very sacred [mountain] named Venkaṭa, especially to those tormented by thirst,
2.1.16.4
jaladānamakurvāṇastiryagyonimavāpnuyāt ..1..
one who does not give water will attain birth as an animal.
2.1.16.5
tasmādveṃkaṭaśailendre yathāśaktyanusārataḥ ..
Therefore, on the king of mountains, Venkaṭa, according to one's capacity,
2.1.16.6
jaladānaṃ hi kartavyaṃ sarveṣāṃ jīvanaṃ mahat.. 2 ..
the gift of water should indeed be made; it is the great sustenance of all.
2.1.16.7
atraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam ..
In this very connection, they cite this ancient legend,
2.1.16.8
viprasya gṛhagodhāyāḥ saṃvādaṃ paramādbhutam .. 3 ..
the exceedingly wondrous dialogue between a brahmin and a house lizard.
2.1.16.9
.. atha hemāṃgasya jaladānākaraṇena gṛhagodhikātvaprāptiḥ .. ..
Now begins Hemāṅga's attainment of the state of a house lizard due to not giving water.
2.1.16.10
purā cekṣvākuvaṃśe'bhūddhemāṃga iti bhūmipaḥ ..
Long ago, in the Ikṣvāku dynasty, there was a king named Hemāṅga,
2.1.16.11
brahmaṇyo brahmabhūyiṣṭho jitāmitro jiteṃdriyaḥ ..4..
devoted to brahmins, steeped in Brahman, having conquered his enemies and subdued his senses.
2.1.16.12
yāvanto bhūmikaṇikā yāvantastoyabindavaḥ ..
As many as are the particles of dust on earth, as many as are the drops of water,
2.1.16.13
yāvantyuḍūni gagane tāvatīrgā dadātyasau .. 5 ..
as many as are the stars in the sky, so many cows would he give away.
2.1.16.14
yeneṣṭayajñadarbhaiśca bhūmirbarhiṣmatī smṛtā ..
By whom, through the darbha grass of sacrifices performed, the earth was known as Barhiṣmatī;
2.1.16.15
gobhūtilahiraṇyādyaistoṣitā bahavo dvijāḥ .. 6 ..
Many brahmins were satisfied with gifts of cows, land, sesame, gold, and the like.
2.1.16.16
tenādattāni dānāni na vidyanta iti śrutam ..
It is heard that there were no gifts left ungiven by him;
2.1.16.17
tenādattaṃ jalaṃ caikaṃ sukhalabhyadhiyā dvijāḥ .. 7 ..
Only water was not given by him, thinking it easily obtained, O brahmins.
2.1.16.18
bodhito brahmaputreṇa vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā ..
Though instructed by Vasiṣṭha, the noble-minded son of Brahmā, [he thought:]
2.1.16.19
amūlyaṃ sarvatolabhyaṃ taddātuḥ kiṃ phalaṃ labhet .. 8 ..
“It is priceless and obtainable everywhere; what fruit would its giver obtain?”
2.1.16.20
iti durdhīrhetuvādairna jalaṃ dattavānvibhuḥ ..
Thus, poor in intellect, through sophistry the king did not give water.
2.1.16.21
alabhyadāne puṇyaṃ syādityavādītsayuktikam .. 9 ..
He argued with specious reasons: “Merit lies in giving what is hard to obtain.”
2.1.16.22
sa ānarca dvijānvyaṅgāndaridrānvṛttikarśitān ..
He honored brahmins who were mutilated, impoverished, and worn down by lack of livelihood;
2.1.16.23
nānarca śrotriyānviprānbrahmajñānbrahmavādinaḥ .. 2.1.16.10 ..
He did not honor learned brahmins who knew Brahman and discoursed on Brahman.
2.1.16.24
prakhyātānpūjayiṣyanti sarvalokāḥ sahārhaṇaiḥ ..
“All people will worship famous men with offerings;
2.1.16.25
anāthānāmavidyānāṃ vyaṅgānāṃ ca kuṭuṃbinām .. 11 ..
For those who are helpless, ignorant, mutilated, and burdened with families,
2.1.16.26
daridrāṇāṃ gatiḥ kā vā tasmātte maddayāspadāḥ ..
And poor, what refuge is there? Therefore, they are the objects of my compassion.”
2.1.16.27
iti duṣṭeṣu pātreṣu dattavānkimapi svakam .. 12 ..
Thinking thus, he gave whatever he possessed to unworthy recipients.
2.1.16.28
tena doṣeṇa mahatā cātakatvaṃ trijanmasu ..
On account of that grave transgression, after being a cātaka bird for three lives,
2.1.16.29
ekajanmani gṛdhratvaṃ śvatvaṃ vā sapta janmasu .. 13 ..
A vulture for one life, or a dog for seven lives,
2.1.16.30
prāpya paścādgṛhe jāto bhūpo'yaṃ gṛhagodhikā ..
Having undergone those, this king was then born in the house as a house-lizard—
2.1.16.31
śrutakīrtestu bhūpasya mithilādhipaterdvijāḥ .. 14 ..
In the house of King Śrutakīrti, the ruler of Mithilā, O brahmins.
2.1.16.32
gṛhadvārapratolyāṃ sma vartate kīṭakāśanaḥ ..
He lived in the gateway lane of the palace eating insects;
2.1.16.33
aṣṭāśītiṣu varṣeṣu sthitaṃ tena durātmanā .. 15 ..
For eighty-eight years that evil-minded soul remained there.
2.1.16.34
.. atha śrutadevapādodakasevanena hemāṃgasya jātismaraṇam .. ..
Now Hemāṅga remembers his former lives by the contact with Śrutadeva's foot-washing water.
2.1.16.35
videhādhipatergehaṃ kadācidṛṣisattamaḥ ..
Once, to the house of the king of Videha, an excellent seer
2.1.16.36
śrutadeva iti khyātaḥ śrānto madhyāhna āgamat .. 16 ..
Named Śrutadeva arrived at midday, weary.
2.1.16.37
taṃ dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya jātaharṣo narādhipaḥ ..
Seeing him, the ruler of men immediately rose, filled with joy;
2.1.16.38
madhuparkaḥ susaṃpūjya tasya pādāvanejanīḥ .. 17 ..
Having duly honored him with madhuparka, the water for washing his feet
2.1.16.39
apo mūrdhnāvahatkṣipraṃ tadotkṣiptaiśca bindubhiḥ ..
He quickly poured over his head; and by the droplets cast up then,
2.1.16.40
daivopadiṣṭakālena prokṣitā gṛhagodhikā .. 18 ..
At the time ordained by destiny, the house-lizard was sprinkled.
2.1.16.41
sadyo jātismṛtirabhūtkṛtakarmātiduḥkhitā ..
Immediately recollection of its former births arose, deeply distressed by the deeds it had done;
2.1.16.42
trāhi trāhīti cukrośa brāhmaṇaṃ gṛhamāgatam .. 19 ..
It cried out, “Save me! Save me!” to the brahmin who had entered the house.
2.1.16.43
tiryagjanturavaṃ śrutvā brāhmaṇo vismito'bhavat ..
Hearing the voice of an animal, the brahmin was astonished:
2.1.16.44
kutaḥ krośasi godhe tvaṃ daśeyaṃ kena karmaṇā .. 2.1.16.20 ..
“Why do you cry out, O lizard? By what action did this state come about?
2.1.16.45
upadevo'tha devo vā tvaṃ nṛpo'tha dvijottamaḥ ..
Are you a demigod, or a god, a king, or an exalted brahmin?
2.1.16.46
kastvaṃ brūhi mahābhāga tvāmadyāhaṃ samuddhare .. 21 ..
Who are you, noble one? Speak! Today I shall deliver you.”
2.1.16.47
ityuktaḥ sa nṛpaḥ prāha śrutadevaṃ mahāprabhuḥ ..
Addressed thus, that king, a mighty lord, said to Śrutadeva:
2.1.16.48
ahamikṣvākukulajaḥ śastravidyāviśāradaḥ .. 22 ..
“I was born in the Ikṣvāku line, skilled in the science of arms.
2.1.16.49
yāvanto bhūmikaṇikā yāvantastoyabindavaḥ ..
As many as the specks of dust on earth, as many as the drops of water,
2.1.16.50
yāvantyuḍūni gagane tāvatīrgā adāmaham .. 23 ..
As many as the stars in the sky—that many cows I gave away.
2.1.16.51
sarvairyajñairmayā ceṣṭaṃ pūrtānyācaritāni me ..
I performed all sacrifices; deeds of public piety were undertaken by me;
2.1.16.52
dānānyapi ca dattāni dharmajātaṃ svanuṣṭhitam .. .. 24 ..
Gifts were also bestowed, and the entire host of duties was well performed.
2.1.16.53
tathāpi durgatirjātā na me cordhvagatirvibho ..
Even so, a wretched state befell me, and no upward path was mine, O lord.
2.1.16.54
trivāraṃ cātakatvaṃ me gṛdhratvaṃ caikajanmani ..25..
Three times I was a cātaka bird, and a vulture for one life;
2.1.16.55
saptajanmasu ca śvatvaṃ prāptaṃ pūrvaṃ mayā dvija ..
And for seven lives, the state of a dog was attained by me formerly, O brahmin.
2.1.16.56
dharatānena bhūpena cāpaḥ pādāvanejanīḥ .. 26 ..
As the water for washing feet was being taken by this king,
2.1.16.57
bindavo dūramutkṣiptāstaiḥ sikto'haṃ kathaṃcana ..
Drops were cast far off; by them I was somehow sprinkled.
2.1.16.58
tadā janmasmṛtirabhūttena me hatapāpmanaḥ .. 27 ..
Then memory of my births arose, my sin being destroyed thereby.
2.1.16.59
godhājanmāni bhāvyānītyaṣṭāviṃśati me dvija ..
Twenty-eight lizard births are yet to be undergone by me, O brahmin;
2.1.16.60
dṛśyante devadiṣṭāni bibhyate janmabhirbhṛśam .. 28 ..
They are seen as ordained by fate, and I am terrified of those births.
2.1.16.61
na kāraṇaṃ prapaśyāmi tanme vistarato vada ..
I do not see the cause; explain it to me in detail.”
2.1.16.62
ityuktaḥ sa dvijaḥ prāha jñātaṃ vijñānacakṣuṣā .. 29 ..
Thus addressed, that brahmin spoke, having perceived it with the eye of higher knowledge:
2.1.16.63
.. atha śrutadevadattapuṇyena hemāṃgasya godhikātvavimuktiḥ .. ..
Now Hemāṅga's release from lizardhood through the merit granted by Śrutadeva.
2.1.16.64
śṛṇu bhūpa pravakṣyāmi tava durgatikāraṇam ..
“Listen, O king, I will tell the cause of your wretched condition.
2.1.16.65
na jalaṃ tu tvayā dattaṃ veṃkaṭāhvayabhūdhare .. 2.1.16.30 ..
Water was not given by you on the mountain named Veṅkaṭa.
2.1.16.66
tajjalaṃ sulabhaṃ matvā na maulyamiti niścitaḥ ..
Deeming that water to be easily available, and convinced that it had no price,
2.1.16.67
nādhvagānāṃ dvijādīnāṃ gharmakāle'pyajānatā .. 31 ..
You, unaware, did not give it to travelers, brahmins, and others, even in the hot season.
2.1.16.68
tathā pātraṃ samutsṛjya hyapātre pratipāditam ..
Likewise, abandoning worthy recipients, gifts were given to the unworthy.
2.1.16.69
jvalantamagnimutsṛjya na hi bhasmani hūyate .. 32 ..
Leaving aside the blazing fire, one surely does not pour oblations into ashes.
2.1.16.70
tulasīṃ tu samutsṛjya bṛhatī pūjyate nu kim ..
Leaving aside tulasī, is the bṛhatī plant ever worshipped?
2.1.16.71
anāthavyaṃgapaṃgutvaṃ na prayojakatāmiyāt .. 33 ..
Being helpless, mutilated, or lame does not constitute entitlement [as a worthy recipient].
2.1.16.72
paṃgvādyā yepyanāthā hi dayāpātraṃ hi kevalam ..
The lame and the like, who are helpless, are merely objects of pity.
2.1.16.73
taponiṣṭhā jñānaniṣṭhāḥ śrutiśāstraparāyaṇāḥ .. 34 ..
Those devoted to austerity, devoted to knowledge, dedicated to the Vedas and scriptures—
2.1.16.74
viṣṇurūpāḥ sadā pūjyā netare tu kadācana ..
are forms of Viṣṇu and always worthy of worship, but never others.
2.1.16.75
tatrāpi jñānino'tyarthaṃ priyā viṣṇoḥ sadaiva hi .. 35 ..
Even among them, those possessing knowledge are especially dear to Viṣṇu at all times.
2.1.16.76
jñānināmapi bhūpāla viṣṇureva sadā priyaḥ ..
And to those possessing knowledge, O king, Viṣṇu alone is always dear.
2.1.16.77
tasmājjñānī sadā pūjyaḥ pūjyātpūjyataraḥ smṛtaḥ .. 36 ..
Therefore, the one who possesses knowledge is always to be worshipped, considered more worthy of worship than any [other] worthy of worship.
2.1.16.78
na jalaṃ tu tvayā dattaṃ sādhavo vā na sevitāḥ ..
Water was not given by you, nor were virtuous people served;
2.1.16.79
tena te durgatiśceyaṃ prāptā cekṣvākunandana .. 37 ..
therefore, O joy of Ikṣvāku, this miserable state has been obtained by you.
2.1.16.80
veṃkaṭādrau kṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ tubhyaṃ dāsyāmi śāntaye ..
I shall give you the merit acquired on Mount Veṅkaṭa for [your] pacification.
2.1.16.81
bhūtaṃ bhavyaṃ bhavattena karmajātaṃ vijeṣyasi .. 38 ..
By that you will conquer the host of karma—past, present, and future.
2.1.16.82
ityuktvāpa upaspṛśya dadau puṇyamanuttamam ..
Having spoken thus and touched water [in sipping], he gave the unsurpassed merit
2.1.16.83
yaddattaṃ brāhmaṇenāpi snānaṃ caikadine kṛtam .. 39 ..
that was acquired by the brahmin through the ritual ablution performed on a single day.
2.1.16.84
tena dhvastākhilā''gāstu tyaktvā ca gṛhagodhikā ..
Thereby, with all sins destroyed, shedding the form of a house-lizard,
2.1.16.85
rūpaṃ karmocitaṃ ghoraṃ sadyo'dṛśyata pūruṣaḥ .. 2.1.16.40 ..
a terrible form appropriate to his deeds, immediately a man was seen,
2.1.16.86
divyaṃ vimānamārūḍho divyasragvastrabhūṣaṇaḥ ..
mounted upon a celestial aerial chariot, adorned with divine garlands, garments, and ornaments,
2.1.16.87
paśyatāmeva sādhūnāṃ maithilasya gṛhāntare .. 41 ..
in the house of the king of Mithilā, while the virtuous looked on.
2.1.16.88
baddhāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā parikramya praṇamya ca ..
Having folded his hands in reverence, circumambulated, and bowed down,
2.1.16.89
anujñāto yayau rājā stūyamāno'marairdivam .. 42 ..
permitted [to depart], the king went to heaven while being praised by the immortals.
2.1.16.90
tatra bhuktvā mahābhogānvarṣāyutamatandritaḥ ..
Having enjoyed great pleasures there untiringly for ten thousand years,
2.1.16.91
sa eva cekṣvākukule kakutstho'bhūnmahārathaḥ .. 43 ..
he was born in the lineage of Ikṣvāku as Kakutstha, a great car-warrior,
2.1.16.92
saptadvīpapratīpālo brahmaṇyaḥ sādhusaṃmataḥ ..
ruler of the seven continents, devoted to brahmins, honored by the virtuous,
2.1.16.93
devendrasya samo viṣṇoraṃśa evaṃ mahāprabhuḥ .. 44 ..
equal to Devendra, a portion of Viṣṇu, a great lord.
2.1.16.94
bodhitastu vasiṣṭhena sarvāndharmānmanoharān ..
Instructed by Vasiṣṭha in all the delightful dharmas,
2.1.16.95
anuṣṭhāyākhilānrājā tena dhvastāśubhādikaḥ .. 45 ..
and having practiced them all, the king, his impurities and inauspiciousness destroyed by that,
2.1.16.96
divyaṃ jñānaṃ samāsādya viṣṇoḥ sāyujyamāptavān ..
attained divine knowledge and obtained union with Viṣṇu.
2.1.16.97
tasmādveṃkaṭaśailendraḥ puṇyaḥ pāpavināśanaḥ .. 46 ..
Therefore, the lord of mountains, Veṅkaṭa, is meritorious and destroys sins.
2.1.16.98
tasmiṃśca jaladānaṃ tu viṣṇulokapradāyakam ..
And the gift of water upon it bestows the world of Viṣṇu.
2.1.16.99
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprā jaladānasya vaibhavam ..
Thus has the glory of the gift of water been described to you, O brahmins,
2.1.16.100
veṃkaṭādrau mahāpuṇye sarvapātakanāśane .. 47 ..
on the exceedingly meritorious Mount Veṅkaṭa, which destroys all sins.
2.1.16.101
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīveṃkaṭācalamāhātmye jaladānavaibhavavarṇanaṃnāma ṣoḍaśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 16 ..
Thus ends the sixteenth chapter, named 'Description of the Glory of the Gift of Water', in the glorious Veṅkaṭācalamāhātmya in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses.
