To a eunuch, to one without a son, to one devoted to hypocritical conduct,
2.1.22.12
vedavidveṣiṇaścaiva dvijavidveṣiṇastathā .. 5 ..
to a hater of the Vedas, and likewise to a hater of twice-born men,
2.1.22.13

asūyāviṣṭamanasaḥ kṛtaghnasya ca māyinaḥ .. 7 ..
To one whose mind is overcome by malice, to an ungrateful person, to a deceiver,

To one constantly intent on begging, to a violent person, and to an impotent man,
2.1.22.19

to a seller of Smṛti, and likewise to a seller of dharma,
2.1.22.21
paropatāpaśīlasya dattaṃ bhavati niṣphalam ..
and to one whose nature is to torment others—what is given becomes fruitless.

ye kecitpāpaniratā ninditāḥ sukṛtaistathā .. 2.1.22.10 ..
Whatever persons are intent upon sin and censured by the virtuous—
2.1.22.23

One should not accept anything from them, nor should anything be given to them.

2.1.22.26

and to one dedicated to the worship of the gods, and to a narrator of the Purāṇas.
2.1.22.27
deyaṃ prayatnato viprā daridrasya viśeṣataḥ ..
O brahmins, gifts should diligently be given, especially to one who is poor.
2.1.22.28
bahunā kimihoktena śṛṇudhvaṃ dvijasattamāḥ .. 13 ..
What is the use of speaking much on this point? Listen, O best of the twice-born:
2.1.22.29
sarveṣāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ ca pradātuṃ śakyate sadā ..
It is always possible to give to all brahmins;
2.1.22.30
vandhyābhartre pradattañcedrāsabho jāyate naraḥ .. 14 ..
yet if a gift is given to the husband of a barren woman, that man is born as an ass.
2.1.22.31
nāstikaṃ bhinnamaryādaṃ putrahīnaṃ jaḍaṃ khalam ..
An atheist, one who transgresses propriety, one without sons, a fool, a wicked man,
2.1.22.32
steyinaṃ kitavaṃ caiva kadācinnābhivādayet .. 15 ..
a thief, and a gambler—one should never salute [them].
2.1.22.33
pāṣaṇḍaṃ patitaṃ vrātyaṃ vedavikrayiṇaṃ tathā ..
A heretic, an outcaste, an apostate, and a seller of the Veda,
2.1.22.34
kṛtaghnaṃ pāpanirataṃ kadācinnābhivādayet .. 16 ..
an ungrateful person, and one intent on sin—one should never salute [them].
2.1.22.35
tathā snānaṃ prakurvantaṃ samitpuṣpakaraṃ tathā ..
Likewise, one who is performing ritual ablution, one holding firewood and flowers in hand,
2.1.22.36
udapātradharañcaiva bhuṃjantaṃ nābhivādayet .. 17 ..
one holding a water vessel, and one who is eating—one should not salute.
2.1.22.37
vivādaśālinaṃ caṇḍaṃ vamantaṃ janamadhyagam ..
A contentious man, a fierce man, one vomiting, one who is in the midst of a crowd,
2.1.22.38
bhikṣānnadhāriṇaṃ caiva śayānaṃ nābhivādayet .. 18 ..
one carrying alms-food, and one lying down—one should not salute.
2.1.22.39
vandhyāñca puṣpiṇīṃ jārāṃ sūtikāṃ garbhapātinīm ..
A barren woman, a menstruating woman, an adulteress, a woman recently delivered of a child, one who procures abortion,
2.1.22.40
vrataghnīñca tathā caṇḍīṃ kadācinnābhivādayet .. 19 ..
one who breaks her vows, and a wrathful woman—one should never salute.
2.1.22.41
sabhāyāṃ yajñaśālāyāṃ devatāyataneṣvapi ..
In an assembly, in a sacrificial hall, and in temples of the deities,
2.1.22.42
pratyekaṃ tu namaskāro hanti puṇyaṃ purātanam .. .. 2.1.22.20 ..
paying individual obeisance destroys past merit.
2.1.22.43
śrāddhavrate niyuktañca devatābhyarcakaṃ tathā ..
One engaged in a śrāddha observance, one worshipping deities,
2.1.22.44
yajñaṃ ca tarpaṇañcaiva kurvantaṃ nābhivādayet .. 21 ..
and one performing sacrifice or water libation—one should not salute.
2.1.22.45
kurvate vandanaṃ yastu na kuryātprativandanam ..
He who does not return a salutation to one who salutes him,
2.1.22.46
nābhivādyaḥ sa vijñeyo yathā śūdrastathaiva ca .. 22 ..
is to be known as not fit to be saluted, just like a śūdra.
2.1.22.47
tasmātsarvepu kāleṣu buddhimānbrāhmaṇottamaḥ ..
Therefore, at all times, an intelligent, best of brahmins
2.1.22.48
vandhyāpatiṃ dvijaṃ krūraṃ kadācinnābhivādayet .. .. 23 ..
should never salute a cruel twice-born who is the husband of a barren woman.
2.1.22.49
.. athākāśagaṃgāmāhātmyam..
Now begins the māhātmya of Ākāśagaṅgā.
2.1.22.50
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
The venerable Sūta said:
2.1.22.51
atretihāsaṃ vakṣyāmi puṇyaśīlasya dhīmataḥ ..
In this regard, I will narrate an ancient story concerning the wise Puṇyaśīla,
2.1.22.52
sanatkumāramunaye nāradena prabhāṣitam .. 24 ..
which was spoken by Nārada to the sage Sanatkumāra.
2.1.22.53
tadvakṣyāmi muniśreṣṭhāḥ śṛṇudhvaṃ susamāhitāḥ ..
I shall relate that, O best of sages; listen with attentive minds.
2.1.22.54
purā godāvarītīre sarvadharmaparāyaṇaḥ .. 25 ..
Formerly on the bank of the Godāvarī, devoted to all duties,
2.1.22.55
puṇyaśīlo dvijavaraḥ satyavādī jitendriyaḥ ..
there lived the excellent twice-born Puṇyaśīla, truthful of speech, master of his senses,
2.1.22.56
dayāvānsarvabhūteṣu devāgnidvijapūjakaḥ ..26..
compassionate toward all beings, a worshipper of gods, fire, and brahmins,
2.1.22.57
karmaṇā janmaśuddhaśca mātāpitṛhite rataḥ ..
pure by birth and action, devoted to the welfare of his mother and father,
2.1.22.58
gurubhaktiḥ sadākṣiṇyo brahmaṇyaḥ sādhusaṃmataḥ .. 27 ..
devoted to gurus, ever polite, friendly to brahmins, and respected by the virtuous.
2.1.22.59
etādṛśaguṇairyuktaḥ puṇyaśīlasya dhīmataḥ .. 28 ..
Endowed with such virtues, to the wise Puṇyaśīla's
2.1.22.60
.. atha puṇyaśīlasya vandhyāpatinimantraṇena gardabhamukhatvaprāptiḥ .. ..
Now the acquisition of an ass-face by Puṇyaśīla on account of inviting the husband of a barren woman:
2.1.22.61
gṛhaṃ samprāptavānvipro vedavedāṃgapāragaḥ ..
house came a brahmin who had crossed to the end of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.
2.1.22.62
prārthitaḥ puṇyaśīlena pitṛśrāddhe'tivegataḥ .. 29 ..
He was invited with great eagerness by Puṇyaśīla for his father's śrāddha.
2.1.22.63
taṃ vipraṃ śrotriyaṃ śāntaṃ pitṛśrāddhe niyojya vai ..
Having appointed that calm brahmin learned in the Veda for the ancestral śrāddha,
2.1.22.64
śrāddhaṃ cakāra dharmātmā pratyābdikamanuttamam.. 2.1.22.30 ..
the righteous man performed the excellent annual śrāddha.
2.1.22.65
tataḥ kālāntare tasya puṇyaśīlasya cānane ..
Then, after some time, upon Puṇyaśīla's face
2.1.22.66
vairūpyaṃ prāptamatyugraṃ rāsabhānanavattadā .. 31 ..
came an exceedingly terrible deformity, resembling the face of an ass.
2.1.22.67
tataḥ khinnamanā bhūtvā puṇyaśīlo'tidhārmikaḥ ..
Thereupon, sorrow-minded, the exceedingly righteous Puṇyaśīla,
2.1.22.68
niḥśvasya bahudhā khinnaḥ prapede'gastyayoginaḥ .. 32 ..
sighing deeply, distressed, approached the yogin Agastya
2.1.22.69
suvarṇamukharītīre ṛṣisaṃghaniṣevite ..
on the bank of the Suvarṇamukharī, frequented by hosts of seers,
2.1.22.70
āśramaṃ paramaṃ divyaṃ sarvakāmaphalapradam.. 33 ..
at his supreme, divine hermitage that bestows the fruits of all desires.
2.1.22.71
tatrāśrame munivaraiḥ sevyamānamaharniśam ..
Seeing in that hermitage the great-souled Agastya, served day and night by excellent sages,
2.1.22.72
dṛṣṭvāgastyaṃ mahātmānaṃ sarvalokahitaiṣiṇam .. 34 ..
who wishes the welfare of all the world,
2.1.22.73
praṇāmamakarottasmai gārdabhāsyo'tiduḥkhitaḥ .. 35 ..
he, bearing an ass-face and exceedingly grieved, bowed down to him.
2.1.22.74
.. puṇyaśīla uvāca .. ..
Puṇyaśīla said:
2.1.22.75
taponidhe namastubhyamagastya munisevita ..
O treasure of austerity, served by sages, obeisance to you, O Agastya!
2.1.22.76
kutsitāsyaṃ mahāpāpaṃ rakṣarakṣa dayānidhe .. 36 ..
Protect me, protect me, a great sinner with a repulsive face, O ocean of mercy!
2.1.22.77
kena doṣeṇa me cātra mukhasyāsītkurūpatā .. 37 ..
By what fault has this deformity of my face occurred?
2.1.22.78
mayi prītyā mahābhāga vadasva munisattama .. 38 ..
Out of affection for me, O fortunate one, speak, O best of sages!
2.1.22.79
agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.1.22.80
vipravarya mahābhāga puṇyaśīla mahāmate ..
O best of brahmins, O highly fortunate Puṇyaśīla, O man of great intellect,
2.1.22.81
ānanasya virūpaṃ vai śṛṇu nānyamanā dvija ..39.. ..
listen with an undivided mind, O twice-born, to [the cause of] the deformity of your face:
2.1.22.82
atha vandhyāpateḥ śrāddhanimantraṇānarhatvakathanam .. ..
Now the narration of the unfitness of the husband of a barren woman to be invited to a śrāddha:
2.1.22.83
kañcidvipraṃ guṇanidhiṃ vedavedāṃgapāragam ..
A certain brahmin, a treasure of virtues, who had mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas,
2.1.22.84
śrotriyaṃ putrarahitaṃ śrāddhe tvaṃ viniyuktavān .. 2.1.22.40 ..
a learned scholar of the Veda, but devoid of a son, you appointed at a śrāddha.
2.1.22.85
tena doṣeṇa mahatā mukhe tava virūpatā ..
Because of that great fault, your face became disfigured.
2.1.22.86
ye loke havyakavyādau vandhyāyāḥ svāminaṃ dvijam.. 41 ..
Those in the world who, in offerings to gods and ancestors and the like, [appoint] a brahmin who is the husband of a barren woman—
2.1.22.87
niyojayanti te yānti mukhe gardabharūpatām ..
those who appoint [such a one] attain the form of a donkey's face.
2.1.22.88
śubhakarmaṇi vā vipra paitṛke vāpi karmaṇi .. .. 42 ..
Either in an auspicious rite, O brahmin, or in an ancestral rite,
2.1.22.89
vandhyāpatiṃ mahāpāpaṃ kadācinna nimantrayet ..
one should never invite the husband of a barren woman, [who is] a great sinner.
2.1.22.90
vandhyāpatiṃ mahākrūraṃ vṛṣalīpatimeva vā .. 43 ..
The husband of a barren woman, or one exceedingly cruel, or the husband of a Śūdra woman—
2.1.22.91
śreyaskāmī hi vipreṃdra śrāddhe tu na nimantrayet ..
one who desires his own welfare, O best of brahmins, should never invite [them] to a śrāddha.
2.1.22.92
vedaśāstrādiyukto'pi kulīnaḥ karmaṭho'pi vā .. 44 ..
Even if he is endowed with the Veda, scriptures, and the like, of noble birth, or dedicated to rituals,
2.1.22.93
vandhyābhartā dvijaśreṣṭha śrāddhe tyājyaḥ kathañcana ..
the husband of a barren woman, O best of brahmins, must by all means be avoided at a śrāddha.
2.1.22.94
jyotiṣṭomādiyajñeṣu vrateṣu ca tapaḥsu ca .. 45 ..
In sacrifices such as the Jyotiṣṭoma, in vows, and in austerities,
2.1.22.95
samartho'pi dvijaśreṣṭhaḥ śrāddhe vandhyāpatiṃ tyajet ..
even if he is competent, O best of brahmins, one should avoid the husband of a barren woman at a śrāddha.
2.1.22.96
alabhye tu dvije pātre tantumātropajīvinam .. 46 ..
If a worthy brahmin cannot be found, one who lives merely by spinning thread,
2.1.22.97
putravantaṃ sadācāraṃ śrāddhārthaṃ tu nimantrayet ..
having a son and good conduct, should be invited for the purpose of the śrāddha.
2.1.22.98
tadabhāve dvijaśreṣṭha putraṃ vā'nujameva vā .. 47 ..
In his absence, O best of brahmins, one's son or younger brother,
2.1.22.99
ātmānaṃ vā niyuñjīta śrāddhe vandhyāpatiṃ tyajet ..
or even oneself, one may appoint; but one should avoid the husband of a barren woman at a śrāddha.
2.1.22.100
puṇyaśīla mahābhāga coddhṛtya bhujamucyate .. 48 ..
O highly fortunate Puṇyaśīla, raising my arm it is proclaimed:
2.1.22.101
sarvathā putrahīnaṃ tu śrāddhārthaṃ na niyojayet ..
By no means should one appoint one who is destitute of a son for the purpose of a śrāddha.
2.1.22.102
vandhyāpatiṃ dvijaṃ yastu śrāddhakartā niyokṣyati .. 49 ..
The performer of a śrāddha who appoints a brahmin who is the husband of a barren woman,
2.1.22.103
tacchrāddhamāsuraṃ jñeyaṃ kartā ca narakaṃ vrajet .. 2.1.22.50 ..
his śrāddha is to be known as demonic, and the performer goes to hell.
2.1.22.104
.. athākāśagaṃgāsnānena puṇyaśīlasya tadvikṛtinivṛttiḥ .. ..
Now, the removal of that deformity of Puṇyaśīla by bathing in the Ākāśagaṅgā:
2.1.22.105
bahunātra kimuktena taddoṣavinivṛttaye ..
What is the use of speaking much here? For the removal of that fault,
2.1.22.106
upāyaṃ te pravakṣyāmi svarṇamukhyāstaṭe śubhe .. 51 ..
I will tell you an expedient. On the auspicious bank of the Svarṇamukhī,
2.1.22.107
vartate devasaṃghaiśca sevito veṃkaṭācalaḥ ..
Mount Veṅkaṭa stands, frequented by hosts of gods,
2.1.22.108
meruputro mahāpuṇyaḥ sarvakāmaphalapradaḥ .. .. 52 ..
the son of Meru, greatly sacred, bestowing the fruit of all desires.
2.1.22.109
tasminveṃkaṭaśailendre surāsuranamaskṛte ..
On that lord of mountains, Veṅkaṭa, bowed to by gods and asuras,
2.1.22.110
viyadgaṃgeti nāmnā vai tīrthamasti mahattaram .. 53 ..
there is indeed a very great sacred ford named Viyadgaṅgā,
2.1.22.111
sarvapāpapraśamanamāyurārogyavardhanam ..
which calms all sins and increases life and health.
2.1.22.112
tvaṃ gatvā veṃkaṭaṃ śailaṃ svāmipuṣkariṇījale .. 54 ..
Going to Mount Veṅkaṭa, in the water of the Svāmipuṣkariṇī,
2.1.22.113
snātvā saṃkalpapūrvaṃ tu gaṃgātīrthamanantaram ..
having bathed with a prior vow of intention, and immediately thereafter [going] to the sacred ford of Gaṅgā,
2.1.22.114
gatvā tīrthavidhānena snānaṃ kuru mahāmate .. 55 ..
having gone, perform the ritual ablution according to the rules of the sacred ford, O noble-minded one.
2.1.22.115
snānamātrāttataḥ sadyo mukhasyāsya mahāmate ..
From that ritual ablution alone, instantly, O noble-minded one,
2.1.22.116
vairūpyaṃ tatkṣaṇādeva naṃkṣyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ ..56..
the disfigurement of this face will surely vanish that very moment; of this there is no doubt.
2.1.22.117
evamuktaḥ puṇyaśīlo hyagastyena mahātmanā ..
Thus addressed by the great-souled Agastya,
2.1.22.118
taṃ praṇamya mahātmānaṃ veṃkaṭādriṃ tato yayau ..57 ..
having bowed to that great soul, Puṇyaśīla then went to Mount Veṅkaṭa.
2.1.22.119
tatra gatvā mahābhāgaḥ svāmipuṣkariṇījale ..
Having gone there, the highly fortunate one, in the water of the Svāmipuṣkariṇī,
2.1.22.120
snātvā niyamapūrvaṃ tu viyadgaṃgāsamīpagaḥ .. 58 ..
having bathed with due observance, approached the Viyadgaṅgā.
2.1.22.121
tatra snānena dharmātmā kāmavakropamaṃ mukham ..
By the ritual ablution there, the righteous-minded Puṇyaśīla
2.1.22.122
prāptavānpuṇyaśīlastu aho tīrthasya vaibhavam .. 59 ..
obtained a face resembling the face of Kāma. Ah, the glory of the sacred ford!
2.1.22.123
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.22.124
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprā nāradena prabhāṣitam ..
Thus has been narrated to you, O brahmins, what was spoken by Nārada
2.1.22.125
sanatkumāramunaye śaunakādyā mahaujasaḥ .. 2.1.22.60 ..
to the sage Sanatkumāra, O Śaunaka and other [sages] of great splendour.
2.1.22.126
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīveṃkaṭācalamāhātmya ākāśagaṃgāmāhātmyavarṇanaṃnāma dvāviṃśatitamo'dhyāyaḥ .. 22 ..
Thus, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the collection of eighty-one thousand verses, in the second Vaiṣṇava section, in the Veṅkaṭācalamāhātmya, the twenty-second chapter, entitled 'Description of the Glory of Ākāśagaṅgā'.
