vāsāṃsyācchādayāmāsuḥ sundaro na tu sāhasī .. 8 ..
Covered themselves with garments; but not the reckless Sundara. // 8
2.1.24.20
tato vasiṣṭhaḥ kupitaḥ śaśāpainaṃ gatatrapam .. 9 ..

.. vasiṣṭha uvāca .. ..
Vasiṣṭha said:
2.1.24.22
yasmātsundara gandharva dṛṣṭvā'smām̐llajjayā tvayā ..
“Since, O Gandharva Sundara, on seeing us, you did not, out of shame,
2.1.24.23
vāso nācchāditaṃ śīghraṃ yāhi rākṣasatāṃ tataḥ .. 2.1.24.10 ..
cover yourself with a garment, quickly attain the state of a rākṣasa on that account!”
2.1.24.24
evamukte vasiṣṭhena rāmāḥ prāñjalayastadā ..
When this was spoken by Vasiṣṭha, the women, with folded hands,
2.1.24.25
praṇipatya vasiṣṭhaṃ taṃ bhaktinamreṇa cetasā ..11..
bowing down to Vasiṣṭha with hearts humbled by devotion,
2.1.24.26
munimaṇḍalamadhye tu vasiṣṭhamidamabruvan .. 12 ..
said this to Vasiṣṭha in the midst of the circle of sages:

.. rāmā ūcuḥ .. ..
The women said:
2.1.24.28
bhagavansarvadharmajña caturānananandana ..
“O blessed one, knower of all righteousness, son of the four-faced [Brahmā]!
2.1.24.29

Even a woman with a hundred sons, O sage, if bereft of a husband,
2.1.24.32
vidhavetyucyate loke tāsāṃ janma nirarthakam ..
is called a widow in the world; their life is utterly in vain.
2.1.24.33
tatprasādaṃ kuru mune patyāvasmākamādarāt .. 15 ..
Therefore, show grace, O sage, out of respect, toward our husband.

Extend forgiveness, O ocean of compassion, to Sundara here, who is your pupil.”
2.1.24.36
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.24.37
vasiṣṭhaḥ prārthitastvevaṃ sundarasyāṃganājanaiḥ ..
Vasiṣṭha, being thus implored by the women of Sundara,
2.1.24.38
provāca vacanaṃ bhūyaḥ prasannaḥ sa dvijottamaḥ .. 17 ..
spoke these words once more, pleased, that best of the twice-born:
2.1.24.39
.. atha sundarākhyasya vasiṣṭhoktarākṣatvanivṛttyupāyaḥ ..
Now the means spoken by Vasiṣṭha for the end of the state of a rākṣasa of the one named Sundara:
2.1.24.40
.. vasiṣṭha uvāca .. ..
Vasiṣṭha said:
2.1.24.41
na me syādvacanaṃ mithyā kadācidapi subhruvaḥ ..
“My word can never be false, O fair-browed ones.
2.1.24.42
upāyaṃ vaḥ pravakṣyāmi śṛṇudhvaṃ śraddhayā saha .. 18 ..
I shall tell you a remedy; listen with faith.
2.1.24.43
ṣoḍaśābdāvadhiḥ śāpo bharturvai bhavitā dhruvam ..
The curse on your husband will certainly have a duration of sixteen years.
2.1.24.44
ṣoḍaśābdāvadhau caiva sundaro rākṣasākṛtiḥ .. 19 ..
And at the end of the sixteen-year limit, Sundara, possessing the form of a rākṣasa,
2.1.24.45
yadṛcchayā veṃkaṭādriṃ sarvapāpaharaṃ śubham ..
by chance [reaching] the auspicious Veṅkaṭa mountain that removes all sins,
2.1.24.46
gatvāsau cakratīrthaṃ tadgamiṣyati surāṃganāḥ .. 2.1.24.20 ..
having gone [there], O celestial women, will reach that Cakratīrtha.
2.1.24.47
āste tatra mahāyogī padmanābho munīśvaraḥ ..
There dwells Padmanābha, a great yogin and lord of sages.
2.1.24.48
bhakṣārthaṃ taṃ muniṃ so'yaṃ rākṣaso'bhigamiṣyati .. 21 ..
This rākṣasa will approach that sage in order to devour him.
2.1.24.49
tato brāhmaṇarakṣārtha preritaṃ cakramuttamam ..
Then, dispatched for the protection of the brahmin, the excellent discus
2.1.24.50
viṣṇunāsya śiraḥ kāyāddhariṣyati na saṃśayaḥ .. 22 ..
will sever his head from his body by Viṣṇu, no doubt.
2.1.24.51
tataḥ svaṃ rūpamāsādya śāpānmuktaḥ sa sundaraḥ ..
Then, having regained his own form and being freed from the curse, that Sundara,
2.1.24.52
patirvastridivaṃ bhūyo gantā nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ .. 23 ..
your husband, will go to heaven once more; there is no doubt about this.
2.1.24.53
tatastridivamāsādya sundaro'yaṃ patirhi vaḥ ..
Then, having reached heaven, this Sundara, your husband,
2.1.24.54
ramayiṣyati sundaryo yuṣmānsundaraveṣabhṛt .. 24 ..
wearing a beautiful attire, will delight you, O beautiful ones!”
2.1.24.55
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.24.56
ityuktvā tu vasiṣṭhastāḥ sundarasya varāṃganāḥ ..
Having spoken thus to those excellent women of Sundara, Vasiṣṭha,
2.1.24.57
svāśramaṃ prayayau tūrṇaṃ śrīraṃgeśvarabhaktimān .. 25 ..
devoted to the lord Śrīraṅga, quickly departed to his own hermitage.
2.1.24.58
atha rāmāstamāliṃgya sundaraṃ patimātmanaḥ ..
Then the women, embracing him, Sundara, their husband,
2.1.24.59
ruruduḥ śokasantaptā duḥkhasāgaramadhyagāḥ .. 26 ..
wept, tormented by grief, plunged into the midst of an ocean of sorrow.
2.1.24.60
dṛśyamānāsu tāsvevaṃ sundaro rākṣaso'bhavat ..
While they were thus watching, Sundara became a rākṣasa,
2.1.24.61
mahādaṃṣṭro mahākāyo raktaśmaśruśiroruhaḥ .. 27 ..
with huge fangs, a massive body, and red beard and hair on his head.
2.1.24.62
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bhayasaṃvignā jagmū rāmāstriviṣṭapam ..
Seeing him, agitated with fear, the women went to heaven.
2.1.24.63
tato rākṣasaveṣo'yaṃ suṃdarī bhairavākṛtiḥ .. 28 ..
Then this one disguised as a rākṣasa, [formerly] Sundara, terrifying in appearance,
2.1.24.64
bhakṣayanprāṇinaḥ sarvāndeśāddeśaṃ vanādvanam..
devouring all living beings, from region to region, from forest to forest,
2.1.24.65
bhramannanilavego'yaṃ veṃkaṭādriṃ nagottamam .. 29 ..
wandering with the speed of the wind, [arrived at] the excellent mountain, Veṅkaṭādri.
2.1.24.66
praviśyāsau mahāpāpī cakratīrthaṃ tato yayau ..
Having entered it, that great sinner then went to Cakratīrtha.
2.1.24.67
evaṃ ṣoḍaśavarṣāṇi bhramato'sya yayustadā .. 2.1.24.30 ..
In this way sixteen years passed for him as he wandered.
2.1.24.68
tatastu ṣoḍaśābdānte rākṣaso'yaṃ munīśvarāḥ ..
Then, at the end of the sixteen years, O lords of sages, this rākṣasa,
2.1.24.69
bhakṣituṃ padmanābhaṃ taṃ cakratīrthanivāsinam .. 31 ..
in order to devour that Padmanābha, the dweller at Cakratīrtha,
2.1.24.70
upādravadvāyuvegaḥ sacāstauṣījjanārdanam ..
rushed with the speed of the wind; and he [the sage] praised Janārdana.
2.1.24.71
yoginā ca stuto viṣṇustadā cakramacodayat .. 32 ..
And Viṣṇu, praised by the yogin, then dispatched his discus
2.1.24.72
rakṣituṃ padmanābhaṃ taṃ rākṣasena prapīḍitam ..
to protect that Padmanābha who was oppressed by the rākṣasa.
2.1.24.73
athāgatya hareścakraṃ rākṣasasya śiro'harat .. .. 33 ..
Then, arriving, Hari's discus severed the head of the rākṣasa.
2.1.24.74
.. atha sundarākhyasya rākṣasatvavimuktipūrvakaṃ svasvarūpaprāptiḥ .. ..
Now the attainment of his own true form preceded by the release from the state of a rākṣasa of the one named Sundara:
2.1.24.75
tato'yaṃ rākṣasaṃ dehaṃ tyaktvā divyakalevaraḥ ..
Then he, abandoning the rākṣasa body, having an ethereal form,
2.1.24.76
vimānavaramāruhya sundaraḥ puṣpavarṣitaḥ .. 34 ..
mounting an excellent vimāna, Sundara, showered with flowers,
2.1.24.77
prāñjaliḥ praṇato bhūtvā vavaṃde tatsudarśanam ..
having folded his hands and bowed down, paid homage to that Sudarśana.
2.1.24.78
tuṣṭāva śrutiramyābhirvāgbhiragryābhirādarāt .. 35 ..
He praised it with foremost words, pleasing to the ear, with reverence:
2.1.24.79
.. sundara uvāca .. ..
Sundara said:
2.1.24.80
sudarśana namaste'stu viṣṇuhastaikabhūṣaṇa ..
“O Sudarśana, salutations unto you, sole ornament of Viṣṇu’s hand!
2.1.24.81
namaste'surasaṃhartre sahasrādityatejase .. 36 ..
Homage to you, destroyer of the asuras, possessed of the radiance of a thousand suns!
2.1.24.82
kṛpāveśena bhavatastyakvāhaṃ rākṣasīṃ tanum ..
Through an influx of your grace, casting off my rākṣasa body,
2.1.24.83
svaṃ rūpamabhajaṃ viṣṇoścakrāyudha namo'stu te .. 37 ..
I have attained my own form. O discus weapon of Viṣṇu, homage to you!
2.1.24.84
anujānīhi māṃ gaṃtuṃ tridivaṃ viṣṇuvallabha ..
Permit me to go to heaven, O beloved of Viṣṇu;
2.1.24.85
bhāryā me pariśocanti virahāturacetasaḥ .. 38 ..
My wives are grieving, their hearts anguished by separation.
2.1.24.86
tvanmanasko bhaviṣyāmi yāvajjīvaṃ yathā hyaham ..
As long as I live, may my mind remain fixed on you;
2.1.24.87
tathā rūpaṃ kuruṣva tvaṃ mayi cakra namo'stu te .. 39 ..
Grant such a state to me, O discus! Homage to you!"
2.1.24.88
evaṃ stutaṃ viṣṇucakraṃ sundareṇa sabhaktikam ..
Thus praised with devotion by Sundara,
2.1.24.89
anujagrāha sahasā tathāstviti munīśvarāḥ .. 2.1.24.40 ..
Viṣṇu's discus at once granted him [his prayer], saying, "May it be so," O lords of sages.
2.1.24.90
cakrāyudhābhyanujñātaḥ sundaro brāhmaṇottamam ..
Having received permission from the discus weapon, Sundara bowed down to the best of brahmins;

praṇamya tenānujñāto gandharvastridivaṃ yayau .. 41 ..
Permitted by him, the gandharva went to heaven.
2.1.24.92
sundare tu gate svargaṃ padmanābho munīśvaraḥ ..
And when Sundara had gone to heaven, Padmanābha, the lord among sages,
2.1.24.93
taccakraṃ prārthayāmāsa viṣṇvāyudha namo'stu te .. .. 42 ..
Prayed to that discus: "O weapon of Viṣṇu, homage to you!

iti samprārthitaṃ cakraṃ padmanābhena yoginā ..
When prayed to in this manner by the yogin Padmanābha,
