2.1.25.1
.. atha jābālitīrthamāhātmyavarṇanam ..
Now begins the description of the māhātmya of Jābālitīrtha.
2.1.25.2
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.25.3
bhobhostapodhanāḥ sarve naimiṣāraṇyavāsinaḥ ..
"O all you whose wealth is austerity, dwellers of Naimiṣāraṇya!
2.1.25.4
veṃkaṭādrau mahāpuṇye sarvapātakanāśane .. 1 ..
On the holy Veṅkaṭa mountain, the destroyer of all sins,
2.1.25.5
tato jābālitīrthasya māhātmyaṃ varṇayāmyaham ..
I shall now describe the māhātmya of Jābālitīrtha,
2.1.25.6
durācārābhidho yatra snātvā mukto'bhavaddvijāḥ .. 2 ..
Where, having bathed, a [brahmin] named Durācāra became liberated, O twice-born ones."
2.1.25.7
.. munaya ūcuḥ .. ..
The sages said:
2.1.25.8
durācārābhidhaḥ ko'sau sūta tattvārthakovida ..
"Who was this one named Durācāra, O Sūta, knower of true principles?
2.1.25.9
kiñca pāpaṃ kṛtaṃ tena durācāreṇa vai mune .. 3 ..
And what sin was committed by that Durācāra, O sage?
2.1.25.10
kathaṃ vā pātakānmuktastīrthesminsnānavaibhavāt ..
Or how was he freed from his sin by the power of bathing in this sacred ford?
2.1.25.11
etacchuśrūṣamāṇānāṃ vistarādvada no mune .. 4 ..
Tell this to us in detail, as we wish to hear it, O sage."
2.1.25.12
.. atha kāverītīravāsidurācārākhyadvijodantaḥ ..
Now begins the account of the twice-born named Durācāra who lived on the bank of the Kāverī.
2.1.25.13
..śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.25.14
munayaḥ śrūyatāṃ tasya durācārasya pātakam ..
"O sages, hear the sin of that Durācāra,
2.1.25.15
jābālitīrthasnānena yathā muktaśca pātakāt.. 5 ..
And how he was freed from the sin by bathing in Jābālitīrtha.
2.1.25.16
durācārābhidho vipraḥ kāverītīramāśritaḥ ..
There was a certain sinful twice-born named Durācāra,
2.1.25.17
kaścidāste dvijaḥ pāpī krūrakarmarataḥ sadā .. 6 ..
A brahmin who lived on the bank of the Kāverī, ever engaged in cruel deeds.
2.1.25.18
brahmaghnaiśca surāpaiśca steyibhirgurutalpagaiḥ ..
Corrupted by continual association with killers of brahmins, drinkers of liquor,
2.1.25.19
sadā saṃsargaduṣṭo'sau taiḥ sākaṃ nyavasaddvijāḥ .. 7 ..
Thieves, and defilers of the Guru's bed, he lived with them, O twice-born ones.
2.1.25.20
mahāpātakasaṃsargadoṣeṇāsya dvijasya vai ..
By the fault of association with those who commit great sins,
2.1.25.21
brāhmaṇyaṃ sakalaṃ naṣṭaṃ niḥśeṣeṇa dvijottamāḥ .. 8 ..
All the brahminhood of this twice-born was completely destroyed, O best of the twice-born.
2.1.25.22
mahāpātakibhiḥ sārdhaṃ dinamekaṃ tu yo dvijaḥ ..
Whatever twice-born should dwell respectfully for even a single day
2.1.25.23
nivasetsādaraṃ tasya tatkṣaṇādvai dvijanmanaḥ .. 9 ..
With perpetrators of great sins, from that very moment, of that twice-born,
2.1.25.24
brāhmaṇasya tu caikāṃśo naśyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ ..
One part of his brahminhood is indeed destroyed—there is no doubt.
2.1.25.25
dvidinaṃ sevanātsparśāddarśanācchayanāttathā .. 2.1.25.10 ..
From serving, touching, seeing, or sleeping [with them] for two days,
2.1.25.26
bhojanātsaha paṃktau ca mahāpātakibhirdvijāḥ ..
And from eating in the same row with perpetrators of great sins, O twice-born ones,
2.1.25.27
dvitīyabhāgo naśyeta brāhmaṇyasya na saṃśayaḥ .. 11 ..
The second part of his brahminhood would be destroyed—there is no doubt.
2.1.25.28
tridinācca tṛtīyāṃśo naśyatyeva na saṃśayaḥ ..
From three days, the third part is indeed destroyed—there is no doubt;
2.1.25.29
caturdināccaturthāṃśo vilayaṃ yāti hi dhuvam .. 12 ..
And from four days, the fourth part certainly dissolves away.
2.1.25.30
ataḥ paraṃ ca taiḥ sākaṃ śayanāsanabhojanaiḥ ..
Beyond that, by sleeping, sitting, and dining together with them,
2.1.25.31
tattulyapātakī bhūyānmahāpātakisaṃgavān .. 13 ..
He who associates with perpetrators of great sins becomes an equal sinner to them.
2.1.25.32
tena brāhmaṇyahīno'yaṃ durācārābhidho dvija. ..
Therefore, this twice-born named Durācāra was bereft of brahminhood...
2.1.25.33
grasto'bhavadbhīṣaṇena vyāleneva balīyasā .. 14 ..
was seized, as if by a mighty, terrifying serpent.
2.1.25.34
asau paravaśastena vetālenātipīḍitaḥ ..
Fallen under its control and exceedingly tormented by that vetāla,
2.1.25.35
deśāddeśaṃ bhramanvipro vanāccaiva vanāntaram .. 15 ..
that brahmin wandered from country to country and from forest to forest.
2.1.25.36
pūrvapuṇyavipākena daivayogena sa dvijaḥ ..
Through the ripening of former merit and the working of destiny, that brahmin,
2.1.25.37
veṃkaṭādriṃ mahāpuṇyaṃ sarvapātakanāśanam .. 16 .. ..
[came to] Mount Veṅkaṭa, supremely meritorious and destroying all sins.
2.1.25.38
atha jñābālitīrthasnānāddurācāravetālayormahapātakādinivṛttiḥ .. ..
Now, the release of Durācāra and the vetāla from the mortal sins and other [evils] through ritual ablution in the Jābālitīrtha.
2.1.25.39
anudrutaḥ piśācena vetālena dvijo yayau ..
Pursued by the piśāca, the vetāla, the brahmin reached [it].
2.1.25.40
nyamajjayatsa vetālo mahāpātakanāśane .. 17 ..
That vetāla submerged him into the destroyer of mortal sins,
2.1.25.41
jābālitīrthe viprendrā mahāpātakisaṃginam ..
into the Jābālitīrtha, O foremost brahmins, [the brahmin] who had associated with a mortal sinner.
2.1.25.42
udatiṣṭhatkṣaṇādeva vetālena vimocitaḥ .. 18 ..
In that very instant he arose, freed by the vetāla.
2.1.25.43
utthito'sau dvijo viprāstasmāttīrthāttu pāvanāt ..
Having emerged from that purifying sacred ford, O brahmins,
2.1.25.44
svastho vyacintayatko'yaṃ svarṇamukhyāḥ samīpataḥ .. 19 ..
restored to health, that brahmin reflected: “What is this [mountain] near the Svarṇamukhī?
2.1.25.45
kathaṃ mayāgatamaho kāverītīravāsinā ..
Oh, how have I, an inhabitant of the banks of the Kāverī, come here?”
2.1.25.46
iti cintākulaḥ so'yaṃ jābālestīrthamuttamam .. 2.1.25.20 ..
Disturbed by this thought, [seeing] that excellent sacred ford of Jābāli
2.1.25.47
jābāliṃ ca mahātmānaṃ yogīndravaramuttamam ..
and the great-souled Jābāli, the best and highest of lordly yogins,
2.1.25.48
samāgamya praṇamyāsau durācāro'bhyabhāṣata .. 21 ..
that Durācāra approached, bowed down, and spoke:
2.1.25.49
na jāne bhagavanvipra parvato'yaṃ vadādhunā ..
“O venerable brahmin, I do not know this mountain; tell me now!
2.1.25.50
kāverītīranilayo durācārābhidho hyaham .. 22 ..
I am indeed an inhabitant of the bank of the Kāverī, named Durācāra.
2.1.25.51
kṛpayā brūhi me brahmanmayātra kathamāgatam..
Out of compassion, tell me, O brahmin: how did I come here?”
2.1.25.52
iti pṛṣṭo munistena durācāreṇa suvrataḥ .. 23 ..
Thus questioned by that Durācāra, the sage of good vows,
2.1.25.53
dhyātvā muhurtamavadaddurācāraṃ kṛpānidhiḥ .. 24 .. ..
that treasure-house of compassion, meditated for a moment and spoke to Durācāra.
2.1.25.54
.. atha jābālivarṇitapārvaṇaśrāddhākaraṇadoṣakathanam ..
Now, the recounting of the fault of not performing the pārvaṇa-śrāddha, as related by Jābāli.
2.1.25.55
.. jābāliruvāca .. ..
Jābāli said:
2.1.25.56
mahāpātakisaṃsargāddurācārasya te purā ..
“Because of your association with a mortal sinner, O Durācāra, in the past,
2.1.25.57
brāhmaṇyaṃ naṣṭamabhavadvetālastvāṃ tato'grahīt .. 25 ..
your brahminhood was lost; then a vetāla seized you.
2.1.25.58
tenāviṣṭastvamāyāto vivaśo'tra vimūḍhadhīḥ ..
Possessed by him, bewildered in mind and helpless, you came here.
2.1.25.59
nyamajjayattvāṃ vetālastīrthe'sminnatipāvane .. 26 ..
The vetāla submerged you in this exceedingly purifying sacred ford.
2.1.25.60
atra majjanamātreṇa vimuktaḥ pātakādbhavān ..
By mere immersion here, you have been freed from sin.
2.1.25.61
jābālitīrthe ye snānaṃ puṇyaṃ kurvanti mānavāḥ.. 27..
Those mortals who perform a meritorious ritual ablution in the Jābālitīrtha,
2.1.25.62
teṣāṃ naśyaṃti vai satyaṃ pañcapātakasaṃcayāḥ ..
their accumulated five mortal sins are truly destroyed.
2.1.25.63
satkarmasādhane puṇyatīrthe'sminsnānamātrataḥ .. 28 ..
By merely bathing in this meritorious sacred ford, an instrument for good deeds,
2.1.25.64
mahāpātakisaṃsargadoṣaste vilayaṃ gataḥ ..
your guilt arising from contact with a mortal sinner has dissolved.
2.1.25.65
tvāmagrahīdyo vetālaḥ purāyaṃ brāhmaṇo'bhavat .. 29 ..
The vetāla who seized you was previously a brahmin.
2.1.25.66
mṛte'hani pitṛśrāddhaṃ nākarotpārvaṇena vai ..
He did not perform the ancestral śrāddha on the day of death with the pārvaṇa rite.
2.1.25.67
tena svapitṛbhiḥ śapto vetālatvamagādayam .. 2.1.25.30 ..
Cursed by his own ancestors because of that, he attained the state of a vetāla.
2.1.25.68
so'pi jābālitīrthasya jale snānaprabhāvataḥ ..
Even he, through the power of ritual ablution in the waters of the Jābālitīrtha,
2.1.25.69
vetālatvaṃ vihāyaiva viṣṇulokamavāptavān.. 31 ..
abandoned the state of a vetāla and attained the world of Viṣṇu.
2.1.25.70
na kuryādyo naraḥ śrāddhaṃ mātāpitrormṛte'hani ..
A man who does not perform the śrāddha on the day of his parents' death,
2.1.25.71
vetālatvamavāpyāśu paścānnarakamaśnute .. 32 ..
quickly reaches the state of a vetāla and afterward experiences hell.”
2.1.25.72
.. śrīsūta uvāca .. ..
Śrī Sūta said:
2.1.25.73
durācāro mahāpāpī tīrthe'smitsnānamātrataḥ ..
Even that great sinner Durācāra, by merely bathing in this sacred ford,
2.1.25.74
prāptavānviṣṇulokaṃ vai punarāvṛttivarjitam .. 33 ..
attained the world of Viṣṇu, from which there is no return.
2.1.25.75
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ puṇyaṃ durācāravimokṣaṇam..
Thus the meritorious deliverance of Durācāra has been related to you.
2.1.25.76
tasmātpuṇyatamaṃ tīrthaṃ sarvapāpaharaṃ śubham .. 34 ..
Therefore it is the most meritorious, auspicious sacred ford, removing all sins,
2.1.25.77
yatra hi snānamātreṇa durācāro vimocitaḥ ..
where Durācāra was delivered by merely bathing.
2.1.25.78
yāni niṣkṛtihīnāni pāpānyapi vināśayet .. 35 ..
It destroys even those sins for which there is no expiation.
2.1.25.79
śūdreṇa pūjitaṃ liṅgaṃ viṣṇuṃ vā yo nameddvijaḥ ..
If a brahmin bows to a liṅga or to Viṣṇu worshipped by a Śūdra,
2.1.25.80
prāyaścittaṃ na smṛtiṣu tasyoktaṃ paramarṣibhiḥ .. 36 ..
no expiation is prescribed for him in the smṛtis by the supreme seers;
2.1.25.81
naśyettasyāpi tatpāpaṃ tīrthe jābālisaṃjñake ..
yet even that sin of his is destroyed in the sacred ford named Jābāli.
2.1.25.82
vipranindākṛtāṃ caiva prāyaścittaṃ na vidyate .. 37 ..
And for those who revile brahmins, no expiation is found;
2.1.25.83
viśvāsaghātukānāṃ ca kṛtaghnānāṃ ca niṣkṛtiḥ ..
for betrayers of trust and ungrateful people, no expiation,
2.1.25.84
bhrātṛbhāryāratānāṃ ca prāyaścittaṃ na vidyate .. 38 ..
and for those engaged with a brother’s wife, no expiation is found.
2.1.25.85
teṣāṃ jābālitīrthe vai snānācchuddhirbhaviṣyati ..
For them, purification will surely come from ritual ablution in the Jābālitīrtha.
2.1.25.86
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprā jābālestīrthavaibhavam .. 39 ..
Thus the grandeur of the sacred ford of Jābāli has been recounted to you, O brahmins,
2.1.25.87
yacchrutvā sarvapāpebhyo mucyate mānavo bhuvi .. 2.1.25.40 ..
hearing which a mortal on earth is liberated from all sins.
2.1.25.88
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīveṃkaṭācalamāhātmye jābālitīrthamahimānuvarṇanaṃnāma pañcaviṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 25 ..
Thus ends the twenty-fifth chapter, entitled “Description of the Greatness of the Jābālitīrtha,” in the Venkaṭācalamāhātmya in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skandamahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
