Having made such a pledge, those sons of King Pāṇḍu,
2.1.29.35
vyāpārairloṃkasāmānyairninyuḥ kālamataṃdritāḥ .. 16 ..
untiring, passed the time in ordinary worldly affairs.
2.1.29.36
atha jānapado vipro rājagehāṃgaṇe sthitaḥ ..
Then a rural brahmin, standing in the courtyard of the royal palace,

the steadfast Yudhiṣṭhira said these words respectfully:
2.1.29.48

how could that take on the nature of wrongdoing? Tell me, O you of noble vows!
2.1.29.53
prajāpālanakṛtyasya coropekṣaṇaśikṣaṇaiḥ ..
In the duty of protecting subjects, through neglecting or punishing thieves,
2.1.29.54
nūnaṃ phalaṃ bhavedrājño brahmahatyāśvamedhajam .. 25 ..
surely the fruit for a king is that of brahmin-slaughter or of an Aśvamedha.
2.1.29.55
asādhyānvairiṇo jñātvā'pyavanīśo na bhadrabhāk ..
Even knowing enemies are incurable, a king does not attain fortune
2.1.29.56
svadeśopaplavakarāstaskarā yadyaśikṣitāḥ .. 26 ..
if thieves who cause devastation in his country are left unpunished.

such was the deed done by you; there is indeed no fault in you for this.”

“O king, do not speak thus, violating your own vow,
2.1.29.64
jānatā dharmasarvasvamullasaddharmamūrtinā .. 29 ..
when you know the essence of righteousness, being the radiant embodiment of righteousness.
2.1.29.65

that vow must never be broken by a man.
2.1.29.67
aśaktānāṃ gatiḥ seyaṃ yadbaṃdhuguruvākyataḥ ..
That is the resort of the weak: that on the word of kinsmen or teachers
2.1.29.68
dharmaṃ tyajaṃti samayaṃ tyaktāḥ prāksvaṃ samīritam .. 31 ..
they abandon righteousness, abandoning the compact previously uttered by themselves.
2.1.29.69
kṛpayā tīrthagamanādāryo yadi nivartayet ..
If the noble one should turn [me] back from going to sacred fords out of pity,
2.1.29.70
hatapratijñaṃ māṃ lokāñjalpataḥ ko nivārayet .. 32 ..
who would stop the people who prate of me as one who has broken his vow?
2.1.29.71
mamāpi tīrthayātrāyāṃ kautukottaralaṃ manaḥ ..
Moreover, my mind is eager with longing for the pilgrimage to sacred fords,
2.1.29.72
kartavyaṃ ca smṛtaṃ rājannāradādiṣṭaśāsanam .. 33 ..
and the command ordained by Nārada has been remembered as duty, O king.
2.1.29.73
tatprasīda mahārāja yattīrthagamanodyame ..
Therefore be gracious, O great king, in this undertaking to go to sacred fords;
2.1.29.74
saṃmānanīyaḥ prabhubhiḥ samayo hyanujīvinām .. 34 ..
for the compact of dependents ought to be respected by lords.”
2.1.29.75
tatheti bhrātṛbhiḥ sārddhaṃ kṛtānumatirarjunaḥ ..
Saying ‘So be it,’ Arjuna, having obtained permission together with his brothers,

agrajaṃ toṣayāmāsa praṇāmapraśrayādibhiḥ .. 35 ..
gratified his elder brother with salutations, humble deference, and the like.
2.1.29.77
yathārhaṃ bhīmasenādīnbhrātṝnāmantrya pāṇḍavaḥ ..
Having taken leave of his brothers, Bhīmasena and the rest, as was fitting, the Pāṇḍava,
