2.1.32.9
jñānavijñānavimukhaḥ sākāra iva bhūsuraḥ ..
just like a brahmin who has a physical body but is averse to knowledge and spiritual insight,

āścaryāṇāṃ mahāścaryaṃ maṃgalānāṃ ca maṃgalam ..
"The greatest wonder among wonders, and the most auspicious among auspicious things,
2.1.32.28
tavaiva śobhate divyaṃ tvaccaritraṃ kṛpānidhe .... 13 ..
is your divine conduct, O treasure of compassion!
2.1.32.29
tava huṃkāramātreṇa bhraṣṭo devādhirājyataḥ ..
By your mere utterance of 'Huṃ', Nahuṣa fell from the sovereignty of the gods
2.1.32.30
nahuṣaḥ kīṭatāṃ prāpa tataścitraṃ na vidyate .. 14 ..
and became a worm; there is nothing more wonderful than that!
2.1.32.31
samāvṛtadharācakraḥ kallolātāḍitāmbaraḥ ..
That the ocean—which envelops the terrestrial sphere
2.1.32.32
kiṃ nvato vidyate citraṃ yadabdhiśculakīkṛtaḥ .. 15 ..

2.1.32.37
vayaṃ kṛtārthāḥ saṃjātāstrailokye yanmahāmune ..
We have achieved our purpose in the three worlds, O great sage,
2.1.32.38
nivasāmo'tra bhavatā sanāthā hyāśramasthale .. 18 ..

The ripening of our fortunes has now arrived,
2.1.32.44
yadādiṣṭosi vibudhaiḥ pravartaya mahānadīm .. 21 ..
since you have been commanded by the gods: 'Bring forth a great river!'
2.1.32.45
pravartitāyāṃ deśesminmahānadyāṃ tavānagha ..
When this great river has been brought forth in this region by you, O sinless one,
2.1.32.46
kadā nu khalu yāsyāmaḥ kṛtasnānā kṛtārthatām .. 22 ..
when indeed shall we, having performed our ritual ablutions, attain fulfillment?
2.1.32.47
kiṃ vitarkeṇa bahunā prayatnaḥ kriyatāṃ dhuvam ..
What is the use of extensive speculation? Let an effort surely be made
2.1.32.48
samānetuṃ jagadvandyāṃ śaraṇyāṃ sariduttamām .. 23 .. ..
to bring that best of rivers, adored by the world, which affords shelter!"
2.1.32.49

2.1.32.55
aṃgīkṛtya vrataṃ gāḍhaṃ bahulakleśaduḥsaham ..
he undertook a severe vow difficult to endure due to manifold hardships,
2.1.32.56
ananyasulabhaṃ yatnātsa cakāra mahattapaḥ .. 26 ..

ghoreṣu gharmadivaseṣvantarastho havirbhujām ..
During the dreadful days of the hot season, standing in the midst of four fires,

During the rainy days, though struck by downpours
2.1.32.60

hemante samaye tiṣṭhankaṇṭhadaghneṣu vāriṣu ..
Standing in neck-deep waters during the winter season,
2.1.32.62
japadhyānaparo bhūtvā na kiñcidvikṛtiṃ yayau .. 29 ..
Devoted to recitation and meditation, he underwent no agitation whatsoever. // 29
2.1.32.63
tataḥ samīhitārthasya vilambamavalokya saḥ ..
Then, seeing the delay in the attainment of his desired goal, he
2.1.32.64
punargāḍhatarāṃ niṣṭhāṃ prapede lokabhīṣaṇām .. 2.1.32.30 ..
undertook an even firmer steadfastness, terrifying to the worlds. // 2.1.32.30
2.1.32.65
nigṛhya mānasīṃ vṛttiṃ nirāhāro jitendriyaḥ ..
Restraining mental activity, abstaining from food, with subdued senses,
2.1.32.66
avijñātabahirvṛttistasthau pāṣāṇavattadā .. 31 ..
unaware of external occurrences, he stood then like a stone. // 31
2.1.32.67
evaṃ tapasyatastasya sarvāṅgeṣu hutāśanaḥ ..
As he was thus performing austerity, from all his limbs a fire,
2.1.32.68
abhraṃliho jvalajjyotirniścakrāma bhayaṅkaraḥ ..32..
a flaming, terrifying blaze licking the clouds, issued forth. // 32
2.1.32.69
tato'dbhutaśikhājālairāvṛtāḥ sarvato diśaḥ ..
Then all the quarters were enveloped by marvelous networks of flames;
2.1.32.70
samudagrabhayodvignā janaughāḥ paricukruśuḥ .. 33 ..
distressed by supreme fear, the multitudes of people cried out. // 33
2.1.32.71
tadā tathāvidhaṃ ghoraṃ jagatsaṃkṣobhamāgatam ..
Then, with the world fallen into such frightful turmoil,
2.1.32.72
devā vijñāpayāmāsurnamaskṛtyābjajanmane .. 34 ..
the gods bowed to the lotus-born [Brahmā] and informed him. // 34
2.1.32.73
.. athāgastyāśramaṃ prati caturmukhāgamanam .. ..
Now, the arrival of the four-faced [Brahmā] at Agastya's hermitage.
2.1.32.74
tānāśvāsya tato brahmā siddhagandharvasevitaḥ ..
Having consoled them, Brahmā, attended by siddhas and gandharvas,
2.1.32.75
prādurāsītkumbhabhuvaḥ purobhāge tapasyataḥ .. 35 ..
manifested in front of the pot-born [Agastya] who was performing austerity. // 35
2.1.32.76
tamāgataṃ samālokya brahmāṇaṃ paramaṃ dvijaḥ ..
Seeing that supreme Brahmā arrived, the twice-born,
2.1.32.77
praṇamya vividhaiḥ stotraistoṣayāmāsa tanmanāḥ .. 36 ..
having bowed, pleased him with various hymns of praise, his mind fixed on him. // 36
2.1.32.78
tatastaṃ vinayānamramagastyaṃ vīkṣya padmabhūḥ ..
Then, seeing that Agastya bowed with modesty, the lotus-born [Brahmā],
2.1.32.79
prasādasumukho bhūtvā pūtāṃ giramupādade .. 37 ..
his face bright with grace, uttered pure speech: // 37
2.1.32.80
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
2.1.32.81
parituṣṭo'smi tapasā duścareṇa tavānagha ..
I am well-pleased by your austerity, O sinless one, which is difficult to perform.
2.1.32.82
vṛṇīṣva yadyadiṣṭaṃ te tattaddāsyāmi suvrata .. 38 ..
Choose whatever you desire; I will grant it all, O you of noble vows! // 38
2.1.32.83
.. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.1.32.84
tava prasādātsakalamupapannaṃ mama prabho ..
By your grace everything is attained for me, O Lord.
2.1.32.85
saṃprayacchasi cetkāmaṃ yāce niḥśaṃkayā dhiyā .. 39 ..
If you grant a wish, I ask with an unhesitating mind. // 39
2.1.32.86
nadīhīnamimaṃ deśaṃ dṛṣṭvā khidyati me manaḥ ..
Seeing this region devoid of a river, my mind is grieved,
2.1.32.87
arthāvavodharahitaṃ śrutipāṭhamivādhikam .. 2.1.32.40 ..
much like the recitation of the Vedic scriptures devoid of comprehension of meaning. // 2.1.32.40
2.1.32.88
urvīṃ pāvayituṃ dakṣāṃ rakṣituṃ ca mahānadīm ..
A great river capable of purifying the earth and protecting it—
2.1.32.89
prasādaṃ kuru deveśa mameṣṭamidameva hi .. 41 ..
bestow this favor, O Lord of the gods! This alone is my wish. // 41
2.1.32.90
.. athāgastyaprārthanayā gaṅgāṃ prati caturmukhacodanā ..
Now, the four-faced [Brahmā's] urging of the Gaṅgā upon Agastya's request.
2.1.32.91
.. śrībharadvāja uvāca .. ..
The venerable Bharadvāja said:
2.1.32.92
agastyasya vacaḥ śrutvā bhūyādevamiti bruvan ..
Hearing Agastya's words, saying "So be it!"
2.1.32.93
sasmāra manasā brahmā suravartmāśrayāṃ nadīm .. 42 ..
Brahmā recollected in his mind the river dwelling in the celestial path. // 42
2.1.32.94
athopetya viyadgaṃgā purastātparameṣṭhinaḥ ..
Then, approaching the presence of Parameṣṭhin, the heavenly Gaṅgā
2.1.32.95
atiṣṭhanmukuṭanyastapraśastāñjalibhāsurā .. 43 ..
stood, radiant with hands folded in praise placed upon her diadem. // 43
2.1.32.96
svaśāsanātsamāyātāṃ vinayānatamastakām ..
To her who had arrived by his command, her head bowed in humility,
2.1.32.97
tāṃ sarvajagatāṃ dhātrīmidaṃ vacanamabravīt .. 44 .. ..
to that maintainer of all the worlds, he spoke these words: // 44
2.1.32.98
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
2.1.32.99
gaṃge mayānuśāsyāsi kārye lokopakārake ..
O Gaṅgā, you are to be commanded by me in a task beneficial to the world;
2.1.32.100
tavāpi lokarakṣāyāṃ mameva niyatā sthitiḥ .. 45 ..
your abiding purpose, like mine, is constantly in the protection of the world. // 45
2.1.32.101
deśe nadīvihīne'tra pravartayitumāpagām ..
In this region devoid of rivers, in order to set flowing a stream
2.1.32.102
hitārthaṃ sarvalokānāṃ kumbhajanmā samīhate .. 46 ..
for the benefit of all worlds, the pot-born [Agastya] desires. // 46
2.1.32.103
tasmāttvamavatīryorvīṃ svāṃśenaikena bhūjanān ..
Therefore, descending to the earth with a single portion of yourself, purify
2.1.32.104
punīhi gaccha vasudhāmetaddarśitavartmanā.. 47 ..
the inhabitants of the earth! Go to the earth along the path shown by him! // 47
2.1.32.105
bhūloke saṃpravṛtte tu pravāhe siddhikāṃkṣiṇaḥ ..
When your current has started in the mortal realm, those desiring perfection,
2.1.32.106
seviṣyante suravarā munivaryāśca saṃtatam .. 48 ..
the foremost gods and the best of sages, will resort to you continuously. // 48
2.1.32.107
nadīṣūttamatāṃ yāhi trāhi tvatsaṃśrayāñjanān ..
Attain supremacy among rivers! Protect the people who take refuge in you!
2.1.32.108
kuru priyamagastyasya gaccha bhadre yathāsukham .. 49 ..
Do what pleases Agastya! Go happily, O auspicious one! // 49
2.1.32.109
.. bharadvāja uvāca .. ..
Bharadvāja said:
2.1.32.110
ityuktvāntardadhe brahmā tayā nadyā ca tena ca ..
Having spoken thus, Brahmā vanished, greeted
2.1.32.111
praṇāmapūjanastotrairviśeṣairabhinanditaḥ .. 2.1.32.50 ..
by that river and by him with special bows, worship, and praises. // 2.1.32.50
2.1.32.112
.. athāgastyasamīpe svāṃśatvena gaṃgākṛtanadyutpattyabhyupagamaḥ .. ..
Now, the Gaṅgā's agreement in Agastya's presence to generate a river as a portion of herself.
2.1.32.113
atha gaṃgā munipateḥ purastātsvāṃśasaṃbhavām ..
Then the Gaṅgā, having manifested before the lord of sages an image
2.1.32.114
divyatejomayīṃ mūrtiṃ darśayitvā vaco'bravīt .. 51 ..
consisting of divine light, born of her own portion, uttered these words: // 51
2.1.32.115
.. gaṃgovāca .. ..
The Gaṅgā said:
2.1.32.116
madīyāṃśo'yamavanīṃ saṃprāpya munivallabha ..
Having reached the earth, O beloved of sages, this portion of mine,
2.1.32.117
pūrayiṣyati te'bhīṣṭaṃ nadīrūpaṃ samāśritaḥ .. 52 ..
assuming the form of a river, will fulfill your desire. // 52
2.1.32.118
.. bharadvāja uvāca .. ..
Bharadvāja said:
2.1.32.119
ityuktvā siddhavāhinyāṃ gatāyāṃ tatprayuktayā ..
Having spoken thus, when the river of the siddhas departed, [the portion] sent forth by her
2.1.32.120
gantavyaṃ vartmanā kenetyukto muniruvāca tām .. 53 ..
asked, "By which path must I go?"; and the sage spoke to her. // 53
2.1.32.121
.. agastya uvāca .. ..
Agastya said:
2.1.32.122
gacchanpurastātkalyāṇi tvadīyagamanocitam ..
"Going ahead, O auspicious lady, I shall show [you]
2.1.32.123
ahaṃ pradarśayiṣyāmi mārgaṃ tvaṃ māmanuvraja .. 54 ..
the path fit for your passage; follow after me."
2.1.32.124
ityuktā muninā tena saṃprahṛṣṭā tavānagha ..
Addressed thus by that sage, she was overjoyed, O sinless one,
2.1.32.125
yadiṣṭaṃ tatkariṣye'hamiti provāca sā śubhā .. 55 ..
and the auspicious lady replied: "I shall do whatever is desired [by you]."
2.1.32.126
atha muniravatārya tāṃ nagendrāddhṛtataṭinītanumabhrasaṃgiśṛṅgāt ..
Then the sage, having brought her down from the lord of mountains—her who had assumed the form of a river—from the peak touching the clouds,
2.1.32.127
muditataramanā yayau purastāttadabhimatāṃ padavīṃ pradarśayansaḥ .. 56 ..
went ahead with an exceedingly delighted mind, showing her the desired path.
2.1.32.128
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīveṃkaṭācalamāhātmye śrīsuvarṇamukharīmāhātmyapraśaṃsāyāṃ suvarṇamukharyāvirbhāvavarṇanaṃnāma dvātriṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 32 ..
