.. atha bakulamālikāṃ prati sakhīviniveditapadmāvatyudantaḥ ..
Now follows the story of Padmāvatī related by the companions to Bakulamālikā:
2.1.6.2
.. yoṣita ūcuḥ .. ..
The women said:
2.1.6.3
vayamākāśarājasya śuddhāntanilayāḥ striyaḥ ..
“We are the women dwelling in the inner apartments of King Ākāśa,
2.1.6.4
sakhyaḥ padmālayāyā vai duhiturvasudhāpateḥ .. 1 ..
indeed the companions of Padmālayā, the daughter of the king.
2.1.6.5
rājaputrīṃ puraskṛtya gatāḥ pūrvaṃ vanāṃtaram ..
Keeping the princess at our head, we had previously gone into the forest,
2.1.6.6
kurvaṃtyaḥ puṣpāvacayaṃ rājaputryarthamākulāḥ .. 2 ..
busily gathering flowers for the sake of the princess.
2.1.6.7
vṛkṣamūle samāsīnāstatra paśyāma pūruṣam ..

2.1.6.8

dark as a sapphire, his chest the dwelling of Indirā,
2.1.6.9

2.1.6.10
mṛṣṭapītāṃbaraṃ hemabāṇabāṇāsanojjvalam .. 4 ..
clad in a spotless yellow garment, resplendent with a golden arrow and bow,
2.1.6.11

2.1.6.12
taṃ tu padmālayā dṛṣṭvā sakhī kamalalocanā .. 5 ..
Having seen him, our lotus-eyed companion, whose abode is the lotus,
2.1.6.13

2.1.6.14
paśyantīnāṃ tadāsmākaṃ gato'ntardhānamāśu saḥ .. 6 ..
As we were looking, he then vanished quickly from sight.
2.1.6.15
sā sakhī mūrcchitāsmābhinītā rājagṛhaṃ tataḥ.. 7 .. ..
Fainting, that friend was then carried by us to the royal palace."
2.1.6.16
atha padmāvatīmuddiśya daivajñaṃ prati viyadrājakṛtapraśnādiḥ .. ..
Now the questioning of the astrologer by Viyadrāja concerning Padmāvatī, and related matters:
2.1.6.17
dṛṣṭvā'svasthāṃ nṛpaḥ putrīmapṛcchaddaivacintakam ..
Seeing his daughter unwell, the king asked an astrologer:
2.1.6.18
vada viprendra putryā me grahacāraphalaṃ mune .. 8 ..
"Tell me, O best of brahmins, O sage, the fruit of the planetary transits for my daughter."
2.1.6.19
bṛhaspatisamo vipro vicāryātmani khecarān ..
The brahmin, equal to Bṛhaspati, having contemplated the celestial bodies in his mind, [said:]
2.1.6.20
anukūlā grahāḥ sarve tava putryā nṛpottama .. 9 ..
"All the planets are favorable to your daughter, O best of kings.
2.1.6.21
kintu nityaṃ grahaphalaṃ kiṃcidbhrāṃtikaraṃ nṛpa ..
Yet the fruit of the planets always produces some confusion, O king."
2.1.6.22
tamuvāca punardhīmānpraśnakālaṃ vicārya ca .. 2.1.6.10 ..
Then, having also calculated the time of the query, the wise man spoke to him again,
2.1.6.23
chāyāṃ guṇitvā lagnaṃ ca tatphalāni vicārya ca ..
multiplying the shadow, [reckoning] the ascendant, and examining their fruits:
2.1.6.24
lagne lagnādhipaścandraḥ keṃdre caiva bṛhaspatiḥ .. 11 ..
"The Moon, ruler of the ascendant, is in the ascendant, and Bṛhaspati is indeed in the quadrant.

The bird of the day is sleeping, but the bird of the query has attained sovereignty.
2.1.6.26
śṛṇu rājanphalaṃ tasya svāsthyameva bhaviṣyati .. 12 ..
Hear, O king, its outcome: she will surely recover her health.
2.1.6.27
uttamaḥ puruṣaḥ kaścidāgataḥ kanyakāṃ prati ..
An exalted man has come for the sake of the maiden.
2.1.6.28
taṃ dṛṣṭvā mūrcchitā putrī tena yogaṃ sameṣyati .. 13 ..
Seeing him, your daughter fainted; she shall attain union with him.
2.1.6.29
tenaiva preṣitā kācidāgamiṣyati kanyakā ..
A certain young woman sent by him will arrive.
2.1.6.30
sā tu vakṣyati yadvākyaṃ taddhitaṃ te bhaviṣyati .. 14 ..
Whatever word she speaks, that will be beneficial to you.
2.1.6.31
tatkuruṣva mahārāja satyaṃsatyaṃ vadāmyaham ..
Do that, O great king; I speak the absolute truth.
2.1.6.32
kiṃ ca sarvārthadaṃ yattu sarvavyādhivināśanam .. 15 ..
Moreover, I will tell you that which grants all objectives and destroys all afflictions;
2.1.6.33
vakṣyāmi tatkuruṣvādya putryāstava sukhāvaham ..
do it today, bringing happiness to your daughter:
2.1.6.34
kārayāgastyaliṃgasya brāhmaṇairabhiṣecanam .. 16 ..
have an abhiṣeka of the Agastya-liṅga performed by brahmins."
2.1.6.35
ityuktātha gṛhaṃ yāto rājānaṃ daivacitakaḥ .. .. 17 ..
Having said this to the king, the astrologer then went home.
2.1.6.36
.. atha daivajñoktyāgastyaliṃgārcanāya viprādipreṣaṇam .. ..
Now, upon the astrologer's instruction, the sending of brahmins and others to worship the Agastya-liṅga:
2.1.6.37
ākāśarājo'pi tadā viprānāhūya vaidikān ..
Then Ākāśarāja as well, having summoned Vedic brahmins
2.1.6.38
abhyarcyājñāpayāmāsa gatvā devālayaṃ dvijāḥ .. 18 ..
and honored them, ordered: "O twice-born, having gone to the temple of the god,
2.1.6.39
mahābhiṣekaṃ śambhośca kurudhvaṃ maṃtrapūrvakam ..
perform the great abhiṣeka of Śambhu accompanied by mantras."
2.1.6.40
ityanujñāpya tānasmānāhūyābhyavadacchubhe .. 19 ..
Having thus instructed them, he summoned us and said, O auspicious lady:
2.1.6.41
mahābhiṣekasambhārānsampādayata kanyakāḥ ..
"O maidens, gather the provisions for the great abhiṣeka."
2.1.6.42
ityājñaptā nṛpeṇaiva vayaṃ devālayaṃ gatāḥ .. 2.1.6.20 ..
Having been thus commanded by the king himself, we went to the temple.
2.1.6.43
brūhi tvaṃ subhage'smākaṃ tvadāgamanamaṃjasā ..
"Tell us directly, O auspicious lady, the reason for your arrival:
2.1.6.44
kutosi kasya vārthena kva vā jigamiṣā hi te .. 21 ..
From where are you? For what purpose [do you come]? Or where do you wish to go,
2.1.6.45
divyāśvamadhiruhyemaṃ devalokādivāgatā .. 22 ..
having mounted this celestial horse, as though arrived from the world of the gods?"
2.1.6.46
.. śrīvarāha uvāca .. ..
The venerable Varāha said:
2.1.6.47
iti tābhistadā pṛṣṭā hṛṣṭā bakulamālikā ..
Having been thus questioned by them, the delighted Bakulamālikā,
2.1.6.48
provāca vācaṃ madhurāṃ harṣayantīva bālikāḥ .. 23 ..
delighting the girls, spoke sweet words:
2.1.6.49
.. bakulamālikovāca .. ..
Bakulamālikā said:
2.1.6.50
śrīveṃkaṭādreḥ prāptāhaṃ nāmnā bakulamālikā ..
"I have come from Śrīveṅkaṭādri, Bakulamālikā by name.
2.1.6.51
dharaṇīṃ draṣṭukāmāhamāruhyemaṃ turaṃgamam .. 24 ..
Desiring to see Dharaṇī, I have mounted this horse.
2.1.6.52
draṣṭuṃ śakyā bhaveddevī kimu tatra nṛpālaye ..
Would it be possible to see the queen there in the royal palace?"
2.1.6.53
iti tasyā vacaḥ śrutvā tāḥ procurnṛpakanyakāḥ .. 25 ..
Hearing her words, those daughters of the king said:
2.1.6.54
asmābhiḥ sahitā tvaṃ vai drakṣyase dharaṇīṃ śubhe ..
"Indeed, together with us, O auspicious lady, you will see Dharaṇī."
2.1.6.55
ityuktā sā tatastābhirāgatā nṛpamaṃdiram ..26..
Having been told this, she then arrived at the king's palace with them.
2.1.6.56
āgacchantīṣu tāsvevaṃ dharaṇī tu pulindinīm .. 27 ..
While they were thus arriving, Queen Dharaṇī [saw] a Pulinda woman
2.1.6.57
.. atha dharaṇīkṛta praśnasya pulindinīprativacanam .. ..
Now the answer of the Pulinda woman to the question asked by Dharaṇī:
2.1.6.58
āyāntīṃ vīthikāyāṃ sā saguṃjāśaṃkhabhūṣitām ..
coming along the street, adorned with guñjā berries and conch-shells,
2.1.6.59
śiśuṃ stanaṃ dhayaṃ pṛṣṭhe baddhvā vastrāṃcalena vai .. 28 ..
having tied an infant suckling at her breast upon her back with the end of her garment,
2.1.6.60
vadāmi satyaṃ śṛṇuta bhūtaṃ bhavyaṃ bhaviṣyakam ..
[crying:] "I speak the truth, listen! The past, the present, and the future!"
2.1.6.61
vadantī vīthivīthīṣu tāmāhūya śucismitā .. 29 ..
As she was speaking thus from street to street, [Dharaṇī] of pure smile summoned her,
2.1.6.62
svarṇaśūrpaṃ samādāya tasminmuktā nidhāya ca ..
took a golden winnowing basket, placed pearls in it,
2.1.6.63
triprasthamātrāṃstrīnrāśīnkṛtvā tasyai nidhāya ca .. 2.1.6.30 ..
and made three heaps measuring three prasthas, placing them before her [saying]:

"Speak the truth: whether what is to come, or what has been."
2.1.6.65
ityevaṃ dharaṇī devī pṛcchaṃtī tāṃ sthitā'bhavat .. 31 ..
Questioning her thus, Queen Dharaṇī stood waiting.
2.1.6.66
pṛṣṭā sāvadadasyāstu manasā yadvicintitam..
Being questioned, she said what had been thought in her mind:
2.1.6.67
madhyarāśau cintitaṃ te vada kalyāṇi me ṛju .. 32 ..
"What you thought of is in the middle heap; speak to me frankly, O auspicious lady."
2.1.6.68
omityāhātha dharaṇī puliṃdāṃ rājavallabhā ..
"So be it," Dharaṇī, the king's beloved, then said to the Pulinda woman.

Dharaṇī said:
2.1.6.70

"The astrological sign has been named; tell me the result, and I will give you a heap of wealth." // 33
2.1.6.71
.. pulindovāca .. ..
The Pulinda woman said:
