avyāhataṃ me sāmrājyaṃ prāptaṃ kṣetrottamaṃ tvidam ..
“My sovereignty is unimpeded; this best of sacred fields has been reached;

Hearing that dreadful word, equal to the stroke of a thunderbolt,
2.2.14.27
papāta dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe niḥsaṃjñaḥ sa dvijottamāḥ .. 11 ..
the king fell unconscious upon the ground, O best of brahmins.
2.2.14.28
taṃ tathā patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā purohitapurogamāḥ ..
Seeing him fallen thus, led by the family priest,
2.2.14.29
snigdhāḥ sakhāyaḥ sarve te hāhākāramupādravan ..12..
all his affectionate companions rushed forward wailing in distress.
2.2.14.30
karpūraśītalaṃ vāri mukhe siktvā punaḥpunaḥ ..
Sprinkling water cooled with camphor repeatedly upon his face,
2.2.14.31
candanāgurukarpūraiḥ sarvāṃgaṃ lilipuśca te .. 13 ..
they smeared all his limbs with sandalwood, aloe, and camphor.
2.2.14.32

They quickly fanned him with chowries and palm fans.
2.2.14.33
nārado'pi ca saṃbhrāṃto dhārayanyogadhāraṇām .. 14 ..
Even Nārada, agitated, concentrated with yogic meditation;
2.2.14.34
prāṇānararakṣannarapaterjānaṃstatra śubhāyatim ..
knowing the auspicious future there, he protected the king's vital breaths.
2.2.14.35
so'pi rājā cirātsaṃjñāṃ lebhe yatnairanuttamaiḥ .. 15 ..
By these supreme efforts, the king at last regained consciousness.
2.2.14.36
utthāya pādayorviprā nāradasyāpatatpunaḥ ..
Rising, O brahmins, he fell again at Nārada's feet:
2.2.14.37
kimakārṣaṃ mune pāpaṃ kasmiñjanmāṃtare dṛḍham .. 16 ..
"O sage, what severe sin did I commit in some other lifetime,
2.2.14.38
yasya pākadaśāyāṃ vai duḥkhamāsītsudāruṇam ..
at whose fruition there has arisen such terrible sorrow?

2.2.14.45
paṃcāśadaparādhā ye viṣṇorvaiṣṇavapuṃgava ..
The fifty transgressions against Viṣṇu, O best of Vaiṣṇavas,
2.2.14.46
tyaktāḥ prayatnātte sarve kruddhā iva mahoragāḥ .. 2.2.14.20 ..
were all carefully avoided by me like enraged great serpents.
2.2.14.47
kiṃ bhāgyaṃ caritaṃ tena purohitakanīyasā ..
What good fortune was practiced by that younger brother of the priest,
2.2.14.48
yaccarmacakṣuṣā dṛṣṭo bhagavānnīlamādhavaḥ .. 21 ..
by which the Blessed Lord Nīlamādhava was seen with mortal eyes?
2.2.14.49
kimarthaṃ rājyavibhraṃśo jānataiṣa nvayā kṛtaḥ ..
Why was this loss of kingdom caused by you who knew it?
2.2.14.50
yātrāsamaya evaitatkathaṃ vā na prakīrtitam .. 22 ..
Or why was this not proclaimed at the very time of the journey?
2.2.14.51
kimarthaṃ vā śrotriyāṇāṃ sthānabhraṃśo mayā kṛtaḥ ..
Or why was the displacement from their home caused by me for Vedic scholars?
2.2.14.52
kathametaiḥ parityaktāścirātsaṃskṛtabhūmayaḥ .. 23 ..
Why have lands consecrated for so long been abandoned by them?
2.2.14.53

The livelihood maintained by the subjects from the time of their ancestors' rise
2.2.14.54
madarthaṃ sā parityaktā jīviṣyaṃti kathaṃ nu tāḥ .. 24 ..
has been abandoned for my sake; how indeed will they live?
2.2.14.55
prāṇānna dhārayiṣyāmi na drakṣyāmi yadā harim ..
I shall not maintain my vital breaths if I do not behold Hari.
2.2.14.56
eṣa me niścayo brahmanmayi naṣṭe kutaḥ prajāḥ .. .. 25 ..
This is my resolve, O brahmin; when I am perished, what will become of my subjects?
2.2.14.57
mune sadā sakaruṇastvaṃ māṃ śāsti śubhāśubham ..
O sage, you are ever compassionate; teach me what is auspicious and inauspicious.
2.2.14.58
sāṃprataṃ matsutaṃ nītvā mālaveṣvabhiṣecaya .. 26 ..
Now take my son and consecrate him in Mālava.
2.2.14.59
sa pālayatu nyāyena na śocaṃtu imāḥ prajāḥ ..
Let him rule righteously; let these subjects not grieve.
2.2.14.60
rājāno ye samāyātāste sarvaṃ mannideśataḥ .. 27 ..
All the kings who have come here, under my command,
2.2.14.61
matsūnormālaveśasya prayāṃtu vacane sthitāḥ ..
let them depart, obeying the word of my son, the lord of Mālava.

By the rite of fasting unto death, meditating on Nīlamādhava,
2.2.14.63
āyuḥśeṣaṃ kariṣyāmi saphalaṃ kṣetrasaṃsthitaḥ .. 29 ..
remaining in the sacred field, I shall make fruitful the remainder of my life."
2.2.14.64
.. jaiminiruvāca .. ..
Jaimini said:
2.2.14.65
vilapaṃtamindrumnaṃ rājānaṃ brahmaṇaḥ sutaḥ ..
Raising the king Indradyumna as he wept, the son of Brahmā,
2.2.14.66
utthāpya praśrayagirā sāṃtvayannidamabravīt .. 2.2.14.30 ..
consoling him with gentle words, spoke this:
2.2.14.67
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.2.14.68
rājanpaṃḍitamūrddhanyo vaiṣṇavo dhaiyasāgaraḥ ..
"O King, foremost of the learned, a Vaiṣṇava, an ocean of fortitude,
2.2.14.69
śreyaḥ savighnaṃ satataṃ kathaṃ vā nāvadhārayeḥ .. 31 ..
how can you not realize that good fortune is constantly accompanied by obstacles?
2.2.14.70
idaṃ tu paramaṃ śreyaḥ puṃso janmaśatārjitam ..
For this is the ultimate good of a man, earned through a hundred lifetimes:
2.2.14.71
śarīradhāriṇaṃ paśyeccarmacakṣurgadādharam .. 32 ..
that with mortal eyes one might behold Gadādhara endowed with a physical form.
2.2.14.72
niraṃkuśā harerlīlā kena vāpyavadhāryate ..
The play of Hari is uncurbed; by whom can it be comprehended?
2.2.14.73
jīvanmukto'pyahaṃ rājaṃstallīlāṃ nātivartaye .. 33 ..
Even I, though liberated while alive, O King, cannot surpass his play.
2.2.14.74
kiyatā vaṃcito nāhaṃ dṛḍhabhakto'ntikasthitaḥ ..
How much have I not been deceived, though standing near as a steadfast devotee?
2.2.14.75
duratyayā tasya māyā bahujanmaśatairapi .. 34 ..
His māyā is difficult to cross, even over many hundreds of births.
2.2.14.76
anantā tasya māyeyaṃ durjñeyā padmayoninā ..
This endless māyā of his is difficult to comprehend even by the lotus-born [Brahmā],
2.2.14.77
nābhipadmāsthitenāpi nityaṃ ca stutiśālinā .. 35 ..
though seated upon the navel lotus and constantly offering praises.
2.2.14.78
svabhāva evaṃ kathitastasya māyāvino nṛpa ..
Thus the nature of that master of māyā has been described, O King.
2.2.14.79
viśeṣaṃ kathayāmyevaṃ tvaṃ tu bhāgyavatāṃ varaḥ .. 36 ..
Now I shall tell you the specific truth; for you are the best among the fortunate."
2.2.14.80
tisro'pi mūrtayastasya tvadanugrahabuddhayaḥ ..
His three forms, too, are disposed to bestow grace upon you.
2.2.14.81
carācarāṇāṃ sraṣṭā yaḥ sākṣāllokapitāmahaḥ ..
He who is the creator of the moving and unmoving, the Grandfather of the worlds in visible form,
2.2.14.82
māmuvāca vrajāśu tvamiṃdradyumnasya cāṃtikam .. 37 ..
spoke to me: ‘Go swiftly to the presence of Indradyumna.
2.2.14.83
nīlācalaṃ prayātyeṣa didṛkṣurnīlamādhavam ..
He is going to Nīlācala, wishing to behold Nīlamādhava.
2.2.14.84
antarddhānaṃ gato hyeṣa yamena prārthito vibhuḥ .. 38 ..
For that all-pervading Lord has disappeared, being petitioned by Yama.
2.2.14.85
na tatra śokaḥ kartavyaḥ śakyate tatra nānyathā ..
Grief should not be felt there; it cannot be otherwise in this matter.
2.2.14.86
vācyo madvacanādrājā paṃcamī mama saṃtatiḥ .. 39 ..
The king, my fifth descendant, should be addressed in my words:
2.2.14.87
tatkṛte paramātmānaṃ prasādya puruṣottamam ..
“For his sake, having propitiated Puruṣottama, the Supreme Self,
2.2.14.88
śvetadvīpānnayiṣyāmi sahasrāṃte mahākratoḥ .. 2.2.14.40 ..
I will bring Him from Śvetadvīpa at the conclusion of a thousand great sacrifices.
2.2.14.89
indradyumnaḥ sa idānīṃ kṣetre śrīpuruṣottame ..
Let that Indradyumna now remain in the sacred field of holy Puruṣottama,
2.2.14.90
aśvamedhasahasraistu yajanviṣṇuṃ sa tiṣṭhatu .. 41 ..
worshiping Viṣṇu with a thousand horse-sacrifices.
2.2.14.91
tadaṃte dāravatanuṃ viṣṇuṃ drakṣyati cakṣuṣā ..
At the conclusion thereof, he will behold with his own eyes Viṣṇu in a wooden body.
2.2.14.92
so'vatāro hareḥ khyātiṃ tasya dvārā gamiṣyati .. 42 ..
Through him, that incarnation of Hari will attain renown.
2.2.14.93
tadā tu tanavo viṣṇoḥ pratiṣṭhapyā mayā dhuvam ..
Then indeed the forms of Viṣṇu must certainly be installed by me.
2.2.14.94
purā sma maṇimūrtistu caturddhāvasthito hariḥ ..43..
Formerly, Hari existed fourfold in a jewel form.
2.2.14.95
dṛṣṭvā purodhasā tasya sākṣādagre niveditaḥ ..
Having been seen by his family priest, He was made known directly before him.
2.2.14.96
divyadāruvapurbhūyaścaturddhāvatariṣyati .. 44 ..
Again, with a celestial wooden body, He will descend fourfold.”’
2.2.14.97
tasmānmā vyatha rājeṃdra vāṃchā te saphalā dhruvam ..
Therefore do not grieve, O king of kings; your desire will surely bear fruit.
2.2.14.98
bhaviṣyati na saṃdeho nirvyalīko vaseha vai .. 45 ..
It will come to pass without doubt; live here free from deceit.
2.2.14.99
.. jaiminiruvāca .. ..
Jaimini said:
2.2.14.100
sāṃtvayitvā nināyetthaṃ rājānaṃ nāradastadā ..
Having consoled the king in this manner, Nārada then brought him
2.2.14.101
viśvāsapadavīṃ viprāḥ punarvākyamuvāca ha .. 46 ..
to the path of trust, O brahmins, and spoke these words again:
2.2.14.102
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.2.14.103
śaṃkhākṛteḥ kṣetravarasya cāgre yo nīlakaṇṭhaḥ khalu durgayā''ste ..
‘Where Nīlakaṇṭha indeed dwells with Durgā at the front of the foremost sacred field shaped like a conch,
2.2.14.104
yāmo vayaṃ tatra ca vājimedhakratūpayogyā susamā sthalī sā .. 47 ..
there let us go; that ground is very level and suitable for the horse-sacrifice.
2.2.14.105
tasyāṃ vinirmāya sahasravarṣasthirāṃ suśālāṃ hayamedhanāya ..
Having constructed upon it an excellent sacrificial hall that will endure for a thousand years for the horse-sacrifice,
2.2.14.106
nīlādrivāsasya nṛsiṃhamūrtiṃ dṛṣṭvā kṛtārthaṃ viracayya janma .. 48 ..
and having beheld the form of Nṛsiṃha residing on Nīlādri, making our birth fulfilled,
2.2.14.107
tasyaiva mūrtiṃ pratiyātanāṃ te nityārcanīyāṃ tava pūjanīyām ..
and having installed an image facing west of Him alone, to be constantly worshiped and honored by you,
2.2.14.108
pratyakpratiṣṭhāpya samastavighnavināśahetoḥ phalabṛṃhaṇāya .. 49 ..
for the sake of destroying all obstacles and augmenting the fruit [of the sacrifice],
2.2.14.109
ārapsyāmaḥ kratuvaraṃ munivaryairyathocitam ..
we shall begin the supreme sacrifice with the foremost sages in the proper manner.
2.2.14.110
vilambo'tra na hi śreyāniti paitāmahaṃ vacaḥ .. 2.2.14.50 ..
Delay is certainly not auspicious here—such is the word of the Grandfather.’
2.2.14.111
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe puruṣottamakṣetramāhātmye jaiminiṛṣisaṃvāde caturdaśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 14 ..
Thus ends the fourteenth chapter in the dialogue between the sage Jaimini and others, in the Māhātmya of the Puruṣottama Field, in the second Vaiṣṇava Section of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, in the collection of eighty-one thousand verses.
