covered with various trees and creepers, crowded with flocks of various birds,
2.2.15.7
śilāviṣamasaṃrodhamabhitaḥ pariveṣakam .. 3 ..
hedged all around by an impassable barrier of rocks,
2.2.15.8
bhramadbhramarasaṃbhūtabhramakṛdgaṃḍaśailakam..
having massive boulders that induced dizziness caused by wandering bees,
2.2.15.9
dakṣiṇāṃbhodhikallolajalāvṛtanitaṃbakam .. 4 ..
its slopes enveloped by the surging waters of the southern ocean,
2.2.15.10
apratarkyaṃ sadā martyairduṣpraveśyaṃ mahoragaiḥ ..
ever inconceivable to mortals, difficult to enter for great serpents,
2.2.15.11
mattamātaṃgakaghaṭābṛṃhitairbhīṣaṇāṃtaram .. 5 ..
its interior made terrifying by the trumpetings of herds of rutting elephants,
2.2.15.12
śvāpadaiścirasaṃvāsaiḥ śastrāghātamavedibhiḥ ..
thronged with wild beasts that had dwelt there long and knew not the blow of weapons,
2.2.15.13
nirbhayaiḥ paritaḥ kīrṇaṃ mṛgayūthairanekaśaḥ .. 6 ..
filled all around with numerous herds of deer devoid of fear.
2.2.15.14
praveṣṭukāmā na prāpuryadā te mārgamaṃtaram..
When they, wishing to enter, could find no path into its interior,
2.2.15.15
tadā nāradasaṃsargādviditvā tu gireḥ śiraḥ .. 7 ..
then, having learned the summit of the mountain through the company of Nārada,
2.2.15.16
āseduryatra vasati kṛṣṇāgurutaroradhaḥ ..
they reached where the all-pervading Lord dwells beneath a black agallochum tree,
2.2.15.17
sarvāpadbhayasaṃhartā divyasiṃhavapurvibhuḥ .. .. 8 ..
possessing a celestial lion's body, the destroyer of all perils and fears,
2.2.15.18
yaṃ dṛṣṭvā brahmahatyāyā līyante koṭayo nṛṇām ..
beholding whom, crores of sins of killing a brahmin dissolve away for men;
2.2.15.19
vyāttāsyaṃ bhīmadaśanamāpiṃgalasaṭākulam .. 9 ..
with open mouth, terrifying fangs, and thick reddish-brown mane,
2.2.15.20
ugraṃ trinetraṃ daityasya svorāvuttānaśāyinaḥ ..
fierce, three-eyed, tearing the chest of the demon
2.2.15.21
vakṣaḥsthalaṃ dārayaṃtaṃ nakharairvajradāruṇaiḥ .. 2.2.15.10 ..
lying supine on His own lap, with claws terrible as thunderbolts,
2.2.15.22
aruṇābhaṃ lasajjihvaṃ sāṭṭahāsamukhaṃ vibhum ..
the all-pervading Lord, radiant as dawn, with flickering tongue and a face loud with boisterous laughter,
2.2.15.23
śaṃkhacakralasadbāhuṃ kirīṭamukuṭojjvalam .... 11 ..
whose arms shone with conch and discus, resplendent with a diademed crown,
2.2.15.24
netrocchaladvahnikaṇasaṃtrāsitadigantaram ..
terrifying the quarters with sparks of fire flashing from His eyes,
2.2.15.25
pracaṃḍāghātabhūmyaṃtapraviṣṭapadapaṃkajam .. 12 ..
whose lotus feet had penetrated into the earth under violent impact.
2.2.15.26
tamādimṛrtiṃ te dṛṣṭvā nāradāgre tadā harim ..
Then, seeing before Nārada that primal form, Hari,
2.2.15.27
nirbhayā dadṛśurdūrātpraṇemurvigatajvarāḥ .. 13 ..
they, free from fear, beheld Him from afar and bowed down, relieved of feverish anxiety.
2.2.15.28
indradyumno'pi taṃ dṛṣṭvā nāradoktau viśasvase ..
Indradyumna too, having beheld Him, placed his faith in Nārada's words.
2.2.15.29
bhāvikārye pratyayavānidamāha mahāmunim .. 14 ..
Trusting in what was to come, he said this to the great sage:
2.2.15.30
maharṣe kṛtakṛtyo'smi tvaṃ hi jñānanidhiḥ param ..
“O great seer, my purpose is fulfilled! You are indeed the supreme treasure of knowledge.
2.2.15.31
durārādhyo nṛsiho'yaṃ darśane'pi bhayāvahaḥ ..15..
Difficult to worship is this Nṛsiṃha, terrifying even to look upon.
2.2.15.32
bhavādṛśaiḥ susevyoyaṃ mādṛśairdūrato'pi saḥ ..
He may well be served by people like you, but by people like me only from afar.
2.2.15.33
darśanātkṛtakṛtyo'smi saṃlīnāśeṣapātakaḥ .. 16 ..
From his darśana my purpose is fulfilled, all my sins dissolved.
2.2.15.34
tvatsannidhānādevātra tiṣṭhāmo nirbhayā mune ..
It is only through your presence, O sage, that we stand here without fear.
2.2.15.35
atyugra mūrtirbhagavānsvalpavīryairnaraiḥ katham .. 17 ..
How can the Lord of exceedingly fierce form be worshipped
2.2.15.36
ārādhyate daityarājaṃ trilokeśaṃ vidārayan ..
by men of little power, tearing apart the king of daityas, the master of the three worlds?
2.2.15.37
yasya nīlamayī mūrtiḥ kṛpāsiṃdhoḥ sthitā tu vai .. 18 ..
In what place does the form made of sapphire of that ocean of mercy reside,
2.2.15.38
kasminsthale muniśreṣṭha darśanādyā vimuktidā ..
O best of sages, which grants liberation merely upon darśana?
2.2.15.39
tanme darśaya vipreṃdra yanme muktipradaṃ matam .. 19 ..
Show that to me, O best of brahmins, which is considered to grant me liberation.”
2.2.15.40
ityukto nāradastasmai darśayāmāsa pāvanam ..
Addressed thus, Nārada showed him the purifying
2.2.15.41
sthānaṃ yatra sthito devaḥ svarṇasaikata saṃvṛtaḥ .. 2.2.15.20 ..
place where the god stayed, covered with golden sand:
2.2.15.42
paśyaitaṃ yojanāyāmaṃ yojanadvayamucchritam ..
“Behold this banyan tree, one yojana in breadth and two yojanas high,
2.2.15.43
kalpāṃtasthāyinaṃ bhūpa nyagrodhaṃ muktidaṃ nṛṇām .. 21 ..
which lasts until the end of the kalpa, O king, granting liberation to men.
2.2.15.44
chāyāyāḥ kramaṇādyasya mucyate pāpakaṃcukāt ..
From stepping into its shade, one is freed from the slough of sin;
2.2.15.45
asya mūle naraḥ prāṇāṃstyajanmuktimavāpnuyāt ..22..
a man giving up his life-breaths at its root would attain liberation.
2.2.15.46
nyagrodharūpaṃ dṛṣṭvāpi nārāyaṇamakalmaṣam ..
Even upon merely seeing spotless Nārāyaṇa in the form of a banyan tree,
2.2.15.47
niṣpāpo jāyate martyaḥ kimuta pūjayanstuvan .. 23 ..
a mortal becomes sinless—how much more so worshipping and praising him?
2.2.15.48
asya mūlātpratīcyāṃ hi nṛsiṃhasyottare nṛpa ..
To the west of its root and to the north of Nṛsiṃha, O king,
2.2.15.49
atiṣṭhanmādhavo yatra caturmūrtidharo vibhuḥ .. 24 ..
where the all-pervading Mādhava, bearing four forms, once stood—
2.2.15.50
anugrahītuṃ tvāmeva punaratrodbhaviṣyati ..
in order to favor you alone, he will manifest here again.
2.2.15.51
śvetadvīpe yathā viṣṇurbhogabhūmau nijālayaḥ .. 25 ..
Just as Viṣṇu has his own abode in Śvetadvīpa, the realm of enjoyment,
2.2.15.52
jaṃbūdvīpe karmabhūmau nijaṃ sthānamidaṃ smṛtam ..
so this is remembered as his own place in Jambudvīpa, the realm of action.
2.2.15.53
svasyaivātirahasyatvānna prakāśosya saṃmataḥ .. 26 ..
Because it is supremely secret even to himself, its revelation is not widely granted.
2.2.15.54
mokṣādhikārī jānāti sthalametanmahīpate ..
Only one entitled to liberation knows this place, O king;
2.2.15.55
aviśvāsapadaṃ nṛṇāṃ duṣkṛtāṃ hi viśeṣataḥ .. 27 ..
it is an object of disbelief to men, especially to evildoers.
2.2.15.56
atra yā'nyā pratikṛtiḥ paurairviṣṇoḥ pratiṣṭhitā ..
Even another image of Viṣṇu consecrated here by citizens
2.2.15.57
sāpi muktipradā bhūpa kiṃ punaḥ sā svayaṃbhuvā .. 28 ..
grants liberation, O king—how much more one [consecrated] by the self-manifest [Lord]?
2.2.15.58
aṃtarddhānatirodhāne sunimitte jagatprabhoḥ..
The disappearance and appearance of the Lord of the universe occur for an auspicious cause
2.2.15.59
anugrahārthaṃ sādhūnāṃ jāyate ca yugeyuge .. 29 ..
in each age, for the sake of favoring the virtuous.
2.2.15.60
nānāvatārairbhagavānmatsyakūrmādikairnṛpa ..
The Lord [appears] in various incarnations, such as the fish and the tortoise, O king,
2.2.15.61
nimittanāśe ca tirodadhāti parameśvaraḥ .. 2.2.15.30 ..
and when the cause ceases, the Supreme Lord disappears.
2.2.15.62
nirnimittaṃ sthito nityamiha kāruṇyasāgaraḥ ..
Without any cause, the ocean of compassion abides here eternally.
2.2.15.63
śvetadvīpādyathā viṣṇuranyatrāvataretprabhuḥ .. 31 ..
Just as the Lord Viṣṇu descends elsewhere from Śvetadvīpa,
2.2.15.64
atra sthito'pi sa dvārakākāṃcīpuṣkarādiṣu ..
so, though remaining here, he becomes manifest out of compassion in Dvārakā, Kāñcī, Puṣkara, and other places,
2.2.15.65
prakāśaṃ yāti kṛpayā tarumūlaprarohavat .. 32 ..
like shoots from the root of a tree.
2.2.15.66
nānātīrtheṣu deśeṣu kṣetreṣvāyataneṣu ca ..
In various sacred fords, regions, sacred fields, and shrines,
2.2.15.67
aṃśāvatārāstasyaiva mā bhūtte saṃśayo nṛpa ..33..
there are partial incarnations of him; let there be no doubt in you, O king.
2.2.15.68
kṣaṇaṃ na tyajatīśānaḥ kṣetraṃ kṣetramiva svakam ..
The Lord does not leave this sacred field for an instant, just as [a husband does not leave] his own wife.
2.2.15.69
tvadupajñastu bhūpāla prakāśo'nyo bhaviṣyati .. 34 ..
Yet, initiated by you, O king, another manifestation will occur.”
2.2.15.70
iti saṃdarśitaṃ sthānaṃ nāradena mahātmanā ..
When the place was thus shown by the high-souled Nārada,
2.2.15.71
sāṣṭāṃgapātaṃ bhūmau tadiṃdradyumno nanāma ha .. 35 ..
Indradyumna prostrated himself on the ground with all eight limbs.
2.2.15.72
manvānastu sthitaṃ devaṃ prakāśamiva tuṣṭuve .. 36 ..
Conceiving the god to be present before him, as if manifest, he praised him:
2.2.15.73
.. iṃdradyumna uvāca .. ..
Indradyumna said:
2.2.15.74
devadeva jagannātha praṇatārtivināśana ..
“O God of gods, Lord of the world, destroyer of the distress of those bowed down,
2.2.15.75
trāhi māṃ puṃḍarīkākṣa patitaṃ bhavasāgare .. 37 ..
save me, O lotus-eyed one, fallen into the ocean of worldly existence!
2.2.15.76
tvameka eva duḥkhaughadhvaṃsakaḥ parameśvara ..
You alone are the destroyer of the flood of sorrows, O Supreme Lord!
2.2.15.77
kṣudrāḥ kṣudrānhi sevaṃte sukhaleśasya lipsayā .. 38 ..
The petty indeed serve the petty, desiring a tiny fraction of happiness,
2.2.15.78
anāditrividhaughasya rāśeḥ svasya mahāṃhasaḥ ..
of their own great sin, a beginningless three-fold flood,
2.2.15.79
durucchedyasya satataṃ pūryamāṇasya janmanaḥ .. 39 ..
a heap hard to cut off, constantly fulfilled through rebirth.
2.2.15.80
kiṃ punarbhaktibhāvena sākṣānmuktipradaṃ nṛṇām..
How much more [is it achieved] by devotion to him who directly grants liberation to men?
2.2.15.81
karmādhīnaṃ tu ye mūḍhā vadaṃti tvāṃ krṛpānidhim .. 2.2.15.40 ..
Those fools who describe you, the treasure of compassion, as subordinate to karma
2.2.15.82
te na jānaṃti bhagavankarmaivaṃ preritaṃ tvayā ..
do not know, O Lord, that karma itself is impelled by you.
2.2.15.83
ajāmilena vipreṇa tyaktvā varṇāśramoditam .. 41 ..
By the brahmin Ajāmila, abandoning what is prescribed for class and life-stage,
2.2.15.84
kiṃ na pāpaṃ kṛtaṃ svāminso'pi tvannāmakīrtanāt ..
what sin was not committed, O Master? Yet even he, from reciting your name,
2.2.15.85
mukto'bhūtsmaraṇādeva pāśahastairvimocitaḥ .. 42 ..
became liberated; merely by remembrance, he was freed by the snare-handed [attendants of Yama].
2.2.15.86
sarve'pyupāyā deveśa kīrtitāstava darśane ..
All spiritual means, O Lord of gods, are said to [culminate in] seeing you;
2.2.15.87
tvayi dṛṣṭe hi bhidyaṃte saṃśayā hṛdi saṃsthitāḥ .. 43 ..
for when you are seen, the doubts residing in the heart are shattered.
2.2.15.88
niḥsaṃśayo bhavetsadyaḥ pāpapuṇyakṣayo dhuvam ..
One becomes instantly free of doubt, and sin and merit are surely destroyed.”
2.2.15.89
tvameva śaraṇaṃ dīnamanugṛhṇīṣva māṃ vibho .. 44 ..
You alone are my refuge; have mercy on me, a miserable soul, O omnipresent Lord!
2.2.15.90
niścitāni tvayā deva garbhasthasya ca yāni me ..
Whatever [circumstances] were determined by you, O God, while I was in the womb,
2.2.15.91
taireva me janirjātu yāce tvāṃ kevalaṃ tvidam .. 45 ..
my birth is indeed through them alone; yet I beg this one thing of you:
2.2.15.92
tiraśco muktidā mūrtiḥ sthitā te yā'tra tāṃ punaḥ ..
that form of yours which grants liberation to animals, which stood here—
2.2.15.93
anena cakṣuṣā paśyāmīśa nānyatprayojanam ..46..
may I behold it again with these eyes, O Lord; I have no other purpose!
2.2.15.94
kṛtāṃjalipuṭo rājā stutvaivaṃ madhusūdanam..
Having thus praised Madhusūdana with folded hands,
2.2.15.95
punarnanāma dharaṇīpṛṣṭhe sāśruvilocanaḥ .. 47 ..
the king bowed down again to the surface of the earth, his eyes filled with tears.
2.2.15.96
tatoṃ'tarikṣagā vāṇī sāmasusvarabhāṣiṇī ..
Then an incorporeal voice traveling through the sky, speaking in the sweet tones of the Sāmaveda,
2.2.15.97
uccacāra nabhomadhye indradyumnasya śṛṇvataḥ .. 48 ..
resounded in the midst of the heavens while Indradyumna listened:
2.2.15.98
mā ciṃtāṃ vraja bhūpāla vrajiṣye tvadṛśoḥ patham ..
“Do not worry, O king; I shall come into the path of your sight.
2.2.15.99
paitāmahaṃ vacaḥ prāha nārado yatkuruṣva tat .. 49 ..
Perform that which Nārada told you, the instruction of the Grandfather [Brahmā].”
2.2.15.100
tacchrutvā divyavacanaṃ nāradasya ca bhāṣitam ..
Having heard that divine voice and the utterance of Nārada,
2.2.15.101
śraddadhe vājimedhāya bhagavatprītikārakaḥ .. 2.2.15.50 ..
he placed his faith in the horse sacrifice, eager to please the Lord.
2.2.15.102
nāradaṃ ca punaḥ prāha harṣagadgadayā girā ..
And he spoke again to Nārada with words choked with joy:
2.2.15.103
mune tvayā yadādiṣṭaṃ caturmukhanideśataḥ .. 51 ..
“O sage, that which was commanded by you at the direction of the four-faced [Brahmā]—
2.2.15.104
aśarīrā tviyaṃ vāṇī anujajñe tadeva hi ..
this bodiless voice has indeed confirmed precisely that.
2.2.15.105
pitāmaho jagannātho bhedo vai nā'nayoḥ kvacit .. 52 ..
Between the Grandfather and Jagannātha there is never any difference.
2.2.15.106
padmayoneḥ sutastvaṃ hi vacaste bhagavadvacaḥ ..
You are indeed the son of the lotus-born [Brahmā]; your word is the Lord's word.
2.2.15.107
tatkartavyaṃ prayatnena yacchreyaupapādakam .. 53 ..
That which brings about the highest good must be carried out with great effort.”
2.2.15.108
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe puruṣottamakṣetramāhātmye jaiminiṛṣisaṃvāde paṃcadaśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 15 ..
Thus ends the fifteenth chapter in the dialogue between the sage Jaimini in the Puruṣottamakṣetramāhātmya, in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skandapurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
