“Master, this one who has arrived with you is indeed not understood to be an ordinary person.

Where you see the guardians of the directions, the ancestors, and the lords of the manvantaras,
2.2.23.8
tatrāyaṃ marttyanilayastiṣṭhedapi hi pauruṣam ..
there this mortal dweller might indeed take his stand; such is his valour!

2.2.23.14
ityukto nārado gatvā brahmāṇaṃ jagatāṃ patim ..

2.2.23.15
natvā sāṣṭāṃgapatanaṃ vijñapto vasudhādhipaḥ .. 7 ..
bowing down with an eight-limbed prostration, he reported the lord of the earth.
2.2.23.16
kaṭākṣeṇādiśatso'tha indradyumnapraveśanam ..
Then, with a side glance, he indicated the admission of Indradyumna;
2.2.23.17
novāca kiṃcidbhagavāngāne dattāvadhānataḥ .. 8 ..
the Lord did not say anything, because his attention was fixed on the singing.
2.2.23.18
divyagāyanasaṃgīte kautukāviṣṭamānasaḥ ..
His mind was captivated with delight by the music of the celestial singer.
2.2.23.19
jñātveṃgitaṃ nārado'tha iṃdradyumnaṃ nṛpottamam ..
Understanding the gesture, Nārada then
2.2.23.20
praveśayāmāsa tataḥ śakrādyaiḥ sunirīkṣitaḥ .. 9 ..
brought in the best of kings, Indradyumna, who was closely observed by Śakra and the others.
2.2.23.21

2.2.23.22
amanyata dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ sākṣāddārumayaṃ harim .. 2.2.23.10 ..
the king considered him, O best of the twice-born, to be Hari in wooden form visibly manifest.
2.2.23.23
śanaiḥ śanairyayau bhūpaḥ praṇamaṃśca kṛtāṃjaliḥ ..
Very slowly the king advanced, bowing down with folded hands,
2.2.23.24
stuvannamanpraṇipatansādhvasaskhalitaṃ vrajan ..
praising, bending low, prostrating, walking with steps faltering from awe;
2.2.23.25
kiṃciddūre sthito bhūpo nāradasya nideśataḥ .. 11 ..
at a little distance the king stood, by Nārada's direction.
2.2.23.26
tataḥ puṇyaṃ gīyamānaṃ caritaṃ siṃdhujāpateḥ ..

the four-faced one remained for a moment, O bulls among the twice-born,
2.2.23.28
sāvitrīśāradābhyāṃ ca vījyamānastu pārśvayoḥ ..
being fanned on both flanks by Sāvitrī and Śāradā,
2.2.23.29
śuddhadehadharairvedaiḥ stūyamānaḥ svayaṃbhuvaḥ .. 13 ..
and praised by the Vedas who bore pure bodies.
2.2.23.30
kalākāṣṭhānimeṣādi kalpayanyugaparyayam ..
Arranging the cycle of the yugas through kalās, kāṣṭhās, blinks of an eye, and the rest—
2.2.23.31
na jarājanmamaraṇaṃ rūpādipariṇāmanam .. 14 ..
for those who have reached whose world there is neither old age, birth, nor death, nor alteration of form and the like,
2.2.23.32
yasya lokagatānāṃ vai nādhayo vyādhayastathā ..
nor indeed mental anguishes and physical illnesses;
2.2.23.33
manvatarādayo yatra yugāvarttādayastathā .. 15 ..
where there are no manvantaras, nor cycles of yugas,
2.2.23.34
kalpāṃtādyā na vidyaṃte sa sākṣātparameśvaraḥ ..
nor ends of kalpas—he, the Supreme Lord visibly manifest,
2.2.23.35
gītāvasāne taṃ bhūpamuvāca prahasanniva .. 16 ..
spoke to that king at the conclusion of the song, as though smiling:
2.2.23.36
iṃdradyumna mahāsattva sākṣāttvaṃ bhagavatpriyaḥ ..
“O Indradyumna of great courage, you are visibly dear to the Lord!
2.2.23.37
anyasya durlabho lokaḥ satyākhyo viditastava .. 17 ..

2.2.23.39
taponiṣṭhāśca tiṣṭhaṃti yāvadābhūtasaṃplavam .. 18 ..
and who are steadfast in austerity remain until the dissolution of all elements.
2.2.23.40
caturdaśasu lokeṣu sṛṣṭānāṃ prāṇināṃ hi yat ..
For among creatures created in the fourteen worlds, whatever
2.2.23.41
caitanyādivicitrāṇi sarveṣāmāśrayo hyasau .. 19 ..
wondrous things exist such as consciousness—he indeed is the refuge of all of them.”
2.2.23.42
jānannapi hi tatkāryaṃ mānayannṛpasattamam ..
Although knowing his business, honoring the best of kings,
2.2.23.43
uvāca paramaprīta iṃdradyumnaṃ pitāmahaḥ .. 2.2.23.20 ..
the Grandfather, supremely pleased, said to Indradyumna:
2.2.23.44
kimarthamāgatosyatra tadbrūhi hṛdayasthitam ..
“For what purpose have you come here? Speak that which is in your heart.
2.2.23.45
mayi dṛṣṭe na duṣprāpamamṛtaṃ kinnu vāṃchitam .. 21 ..
When I am seen, immortality is not difficult to attain; what is it that is desired?”
2.2.23.46
.. indradyumna uvāca .. ..
Indradyumna said:
2.2.23.47
aṃtaryāminhi bhagavaṃstvadajñātaṃ kuto bhavet..
“O Inner Ruler, Lord, whence could there be anything unknown to you?
2.2.23.48
tathāpi praśno yo nātha mayyanukrośa eva saḥ .. 22 ..
Nevertheless, Master, the question you ask is compassion itself toward me.
2.2.23.49
mūrdhnyādhāya tavānujñāṃ kathitaṃ tava sūnunā ..
Placing your command upon my head, as spoken by your son,
2.2.23.50
iṣṭāḥ sahasraṃ kratavastadaṃte dārudehabhṛt.. 23 ..
a thousand sacrifices were offered by me; at the end of them, bearing a wooden body,
2.2.23.51
āvirbabhūva bhagavānbhūtabhavyabhavatprabhuḥ ..
the Lord, ruler of the past, future, and present, manifested himself.
2.2.23.52
tvadanugrahasaṃpattivaśādevāvalokayan .. 24 ..
Looking upon me solely through the power of the wealth of your grace,
2.2.23.53
tādṛśaṃ puṃḍarīkākṣaṃ yena tvallokamāgataḥ ..
the lotus-eyed one was of such a nature; because of which I have come to your world.
2.2.23.54
yasyārabdho mayā deva prāsādastatra cetsvayam .. 25 ..
For whom a temple has been begun by me, O god—if you yourself
2.2.23.55
gatvā devaṃ jagannāthaṃ sthāpayiṣyasi cetprabho ..
go there, O Lord, and install the divine Jagannātha,
2.2.23.56
tvadanugrahastu saphalo bhavenme lokabhāvana ... .. 26 ..
your grace toward me will indeed bear fruit, O Creator of the world!
2.2.23.57
etadarthaṃ jagatsvāminnāradena sahādhunā ..
For this purpose, O Master of the universe, now along with Nārada
2.2.23.58
tvatpādapadmayugalaṃ draṣṭuṃ tvallokamāgataḥ .. 27 ..
I have come to your world to see the pair of your lotus feet.”
2.2.23.59
prasīda māṃ kuruṣvedaṃ jagannāthastvameva hi ..
Be gracious to me and do this, for you alone are the Lord of the Universe (Jagannātha).
2.2.23.60
tvameva sa jagannātho na bhedo yuvayorvibho ..28 ..
You alone are that Lord of the Universe; there is no distinction between the two of you, O all-pervading Lord.
2.2.23.61
sthāpyaḥ sthāpayitā cāsi vedyo vedayitā bhavān .. 29 ..
You are the one to be consecrated and the consecrator; you are the one to be known and the one who makes known.
2.2.23.62
.. jaiminiruvāca .. ..
Jaimini said:
2.2.23.63
evaṃ vijñāpanāṃte tu durvāsā sa mahāmuniḥ ..
At the conclusion of this entreaty, the great sage Durvāsas,
2.2.23.64
praṇamya sāṣṭāṃgapātaṃ kṛtāṃjalirupasthitaḥ ..
having bowed down with a prostration of all eight limbs, stood with joined palms,
2.2.23.65
provāca vinayānnīco dhātāraṃ jagatāṃ gurum .. 2.2.23.30 ..
and, humble through modesty, spoke to the Creator, the teacher of the worlds:
2.2.23.66
vibho dvārapraveśe'tra dauvārikanivāritāḥ ..
“O all-pervading Lord, held back at the entrance of the gate by the doorkeeper,
2.2.23.67
lokapālāḥ sapitarastathā manvaṃtarādhipāḥ .. 31 ..
the guardians of the quarters, along with the ancestors, and likewise the lords of the manvantaras,
2.2.23.68
tiṣṭhaṃti dīnajanavatsucirāllokabhāvana ..
have been waiting for a long time like wretched folk, O source of the worlds.
2.2.23.69
tadājñāpaya paśyaṃtu tava pādasaroruham .. 32 ..
Therefore give the command, so that they may behold your lotus-like feet.”
2.2.23.70
tacchrutvā devadevastu tadā durvāsaso vacaḥ ..
Hearing that speech of Durvāsas, the god of gods then,
2.2.23.71
prahasya vacanaṃ prāha naiṣāṃ prastāva eva hi .. 33 ..
laughing aloud, uttered these words: “This is not their occasion at all.
2.2.23.72
iṃdradyumnena sparddhaṃte kiṃ tu mohavaśānugāḥ ..
Do they vie with Indradyumna, succumbing to the sway of delusion?
2.2.23.73
jīvanmukto'yaṃ nṛpatiḥ kṣīṇakarmāghasaṃhatiḥ . 34 ..
This king is liberated while living, his heap of karmic sins destroyed.
2.2.23.74
matsaṃtateḥ paṃcamo'yaṃ vaiṣṇavo viṣṇutatparaḥ ..
He is the fifth in descent from my lineage, a Vaiṣṇava devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.2.23.75
ete hi sukhabhogāya karmaṇā prāptapauruṣāḥ .. 35 ..
For these [gods] attained their status through action for the sake of enjoying pleasure.
2.2.23.76
atrāgatiṃ prārthayaṃtastapastaptvā hi devatāḥ ..
These deities, performing austerity while praying for arrival here,
2.2.23.77
mamānugrahata ete āyātā madupāsane .. 36 ..
have come by my grace into my worship.
2.2.23.78
tathāpi tvadanujñātā āyāṃtu mama darśane ..
Even so, permitted by you, let them come to have my darśana.”
2.2.23.79
tataḥ praviṣṭāste devā durvāsovacanena vai .. 37 ..
Then those gods entered at the word of Durvāsas.
2.2.23.80
dūrātpraṇemurbrahmāṇaṃ gāyanānāṃ samīpataḥ ..
From afar they bowed to Brahmā, near the singers,
2.2.23.81
iṃdradyumnaṃ narapatiṃ saṃlapaṃtaṃ kṛtāṃjalim.. 38 ..
[and to] King Indradyumna who was conversing with joined palms.
2.2.23.82
tām̐llokapālānpraṇatānkaṭākṣeṇa jagatprabhuḥ ..
Looking with a side-glance upon those bowed guardians of the quarters, the Lord of the Universe
2.2.23.83
anujagrāha kathayanniṃdradyumnaṃ sasādaram .. 39 ..
favored them, speaking respectfully to Indradyumna:
2.2.23.84
rājankṛtastvayā satyaṃ prāsādo bhagavatsthitau ..
“O King, truly a temple was built by you for the presence of the Lord.
2.2.23.85
nāyaṃ kālastathā rājyaṃ na vā tvatsaṃtatirnṛpa .. 2.2.23.40 ..
Neither that time, nor that kingdom, nor your lineage remains now, O King.
2.2.23.86
gītagānāvasarato bhūyānkālo gatastava ..
During this interval of musical singing, a great amount of time of yours has elapsed.
2.2.23.87
manvaṃtaro hi divyānāṃ yugānāmekasaptatiḥ .. 41 ..
For a manvantara consists of seventy-one divine yugas.
2.2.23.88
tava vaṃśo'pi vicchinnaḥ koṭiśaḥ kṣitipā gatāḥ ..
Your lineage has also been cut off; crores of rulers of the earth have passed away.
2.2.23.89
devoṃ'timaśca prāsādo dvayamatrāvaśiṣyate .. 42 ..
The final deity and the temple—these two alone remain here.
2.2.23.90
dvitīyasya manorādiyugaṃ svārociṣasya tu ..
It is now the first yuga of the second Manu, Svārociṣa.
2.2.23.91
mamāṃtike'tra vasatomṛtyurvā na jarā tathā .. 43 ..
For one dwelling here in my presence, there is neither death nor old age,
2.2.23.92
viparyayamṛtūnāṃ vā na kālapariṇāmatā ..
nor change of the seasons, nor the maturing effects of time.
2.2.23.93
tadgaccha bhūmau rājeṃdra devaṃ prāsādameva ca .. 44 ..
Therefore go to the earth, O king of kings, and to the deity and the temple,
2.2.23.94
ātmasaṃbaṃdhinaṃ kṛtvā punarāyāhi vegavān ..
establish your connection with it, and return swiftly.
2.2.23.95
athavāhaṃ prayāsyāmi tavānupadameva hi .. 45 ..
Or rather, I shall set out right on your heels.
2.2.23.96
tvamagrato dharāṃ gatvā yāvatsaṃbhāramṛddhimat ..
Having gone to the earth ahead of me, while you make ready
2.2.23.97
kariṣyasi mahābhāga tāvadeva vrajāmyaham .. 46 ..
the abundant provisions, O fortunate one, in that very time I will come.”
2.2.23.98
ityājñāpyeṃdradyumnaṃ taṃ bhagavānsa pitāmahaḥ ..
Having thus instructed Indradyumna, the blessed Grandfather
2.2.23.99
devānpuraḥsthitānāha vinayānatakaṃdharān .. 47 ..
spoke to the gods standing before him with their necks bowed in humility,
2.2.23.100
baddhāṃjalīnsādhvasāṃstāṃstatpādanyastavīkṣaṇān ..
with hands joined in reverence, filled with awe, their gazes fixed on his feet.
2.2.23.101
uvāca bhagavānsnigdhagaṃbhīravacasā dvijāḥ .. 48 ..
The Blessed One spoke with an affectionate, deep voice, O twice-born ones:
2.2.23.102
kimarthamāgatāḥ sarve yugapattu divaukasaḥ ..
“For what reason have all you dwellers of heaven arrived simultaneously?
2.2.23.103
yatkāryaṃ vo mayā kāryaṃ vijñāpayata mā ciram .. 49 ..
State what business of yours is to be performed by me, without delay.”
2.2.23.104
.. jaiminiruvāca .. ..
Jaimini said:
2.2.23.105
iti śrutvā vaco dhātustridaśā vigatajvarāḥ ..
Having heard the words of the Creator, the gods, free from agitation,
2.2.23.106
pratyūcurharṣitāḥ sarve bhagavaṃtaṃ pitāmaham .. 2.2.23.50 ..
all rejoiced and replied to the blessed Grandfather.
2.2.23.107
.. devā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gods said:
2.2.23.108
upāsitaḥ purāsmābhiryo nīlādrau maṇīmayaḥ ..
“The one who was previously worshipped by us on the Blue Mountain, made of sapphire—
2.2.23.109
antarhitaḥ kathaṃ deva idānīṃ dārudehadhṛk .. 51 ..
how has he disappeared, O God, and now, bearing a wooden body,
2.2.23.110
āvirbhūtaḥ kratoraṃta indradyumnasya bhūpateḥ ..
appeared at the conclusion of King Indradyumna's sacrifice?
2.2.23.111
etasya kāraṇaṃ jñātuṃ bhavataḥ pādapaṃkajam .. 52 ..
To learn the reason for this, to your lotus feet
2.2.23.112
ārādhitumihāyātāḥ prasīda kathayasva tat ..
we have come here to worship; be gracious and tell us that.”
2.2.23.113
ityukte tridaśairdevo bhagavānpaṃkajāsanaḥ .. 53 ..
When this was said by the gods, the blessed lotus-seated deity [said]:
2.2.23.114
rahasyametadbho devāḥ kasyacinnoditaṃ purā ..
“This is a secret, O gods, which was not declared to anyone previously.
2.2.23.115
sarve samuditā yasmādapṛcchata cirāgatāḥ .. 54 ..
Since you have all come together after a long time and asked,
2.2.23.116
tato vaḥ kathayiṣyāmi surāṇāṃ guhyamuttamam ..
therefore I shall tell you the supreme secret of the gods.
2.2.23.117
pūrve parārddhe bho devāḥ kṣetraṃ śrīpuruṣottamam .. 55 ..
In the previous parārdha, O gods, Janārdana,
2.2.23.118
nīlāśmavapurāsthāya na tatyāja janārdanaḥ ..
taking a body made of sapphire, did not abandon the sacred field of glorious Puruṣottama.
2.2.23.119
sāṃprataṃ me dvitīyaṃ tu parārddhaṃ samupasthitam .. 56 ..
Now, however, the second half of my life has arrived,
2.2.23.120
manuḥ svāyambhuvo nāma śvetavārāhakalpake ..
in the Śvetavārāha Kalpa, during the time of the Manu named Svāyambhuva.
2.2.23.121
pravarttate'yaṃ kālo vai prātarādyadinasya ca .. 57 ..
This period is indeed current, the morning of the very first day.
2.2.23.122
dārumūrtirayaṃ devo bhuvanānāṃ hi madhyame ..
This god, in a wooden form in the middle of the worlds,
2.2.23.123
mamāyuṣaḥ pramāṇaṃ tu sthāsyate mānayanprabhuḥ .. 58 ..
the Lord, will remain, honouring the measure of my lifespan.
2.2.23.124
mamātmā eṣa bhagavānahametanmayaḥ surāḥ ..
This Blessed One is my own self; I am made of him, O gods.
2.2.23.125
nāvayorvidyate kiṃcidasminsthāvarajaṃgame .. 59 ..
There is nothing between the two of us in this world of moving and unmoving things.
2.2.23.126
kṣīrodārṇavamadhye hi śvetadvīpe hi talpake ..
He who in the middle of the Milk Ocean, on Śvetadvīpa, upon a couch,

yaḥ śete yoganidrāṃ tāṃ mānayanpuruṣottamaḥ .. 2.2.23.60 ..
lies observing that yogic sleep, Puruṣottama—
2.2.23.128
sa mūlaṃ jagatāmādistasya romāṇi yāni vai .. tāni kalpadrumākhyāni śaṃkhacakrāṃkitāni vai .. 61 ..
he is the root, the origin of the worlds. His hairs, indeed, / are named the wish-fulfilling trees, marked with the conch and the discus.

2.2.23.132
anekajanmasāhasrairbhaktiyogena bhāvitaḥ .. 63 ..
cultivated through the yoga of devotion across many thousands of births,
2.2.23.133
ghorasaṃsāranāśāya mayā pūrvaṃ prayācitaḥ ..
was prayed to by me formerly for the destruction of dreadful worldly existence,
2.2.23.134

mokṣāya bhagavānāvirbabhūva puruṣottamaḥ ..
the Blessed One, Puruṣottama, became manifest for the sake of liberation.
2.2.23.138

dharmigrāhapramāṇena yādṛgdṛṣṭaḥ sa eva saḥ ..
According to the measure of the subject's perception, as he is seen, just so is he;

Jaimini said:
2.2.23.144
etacchrutvā tu te devāḥ padmayonervacomṛtam ..
Hearing this nectar of words from the Lotus-Born [Brahmā],
2.2.23.145
hṛṣṭāḥ saṃciṃtayāmāsuḥ prahṛṣṭenāṃtarātmanā .. 69 ..
the delighted gods reflected with overjoyed inner selves:
2.2.23.146
acirasthāyi devatvaṃ vihāyaitadbhuvaṃ gatāḥ ..
"Leaving behind this fleeting divinity and going to the earth,
2.2.23.147
asminkṣetravare devamārādhyāmaḥ susaṃyatāḥ .. 2.2.23.70 ..
let us worship the god in this excellent sacred field, fully self-controlled."
