Jaimini said:
2.2.28.36
stutvetthaṃ divyasiṃhaṃ tamiṃdradyumnaṃ prajāpatiḥ ..
Having thus praised that divine lion, the lord of creatures [Brahmā] drew a lion-yantra,
2.2.28.37
siṃhayaṃtraṃ samālekhya tasyopari niveśya ca .. 18 ..
seated Indradyumna upon it,
2.2.28.38
dīkṣayitvā mantrarājaṃ sākṣādātharvaṇoditam ..
and initiated him into the king of mantras proclaimed directly in the Atharvaveda,
2.2.28.39

performed creation after receiving it from this four-faced [Brahmā],
2.2.28.43
aṇimādiguṇā yasya phalaṃ syādānuṣaṃgikam .. 21 ..
whose secondary fruit are the powers such as atomicity.
2.2.28.44
eka eva mahāmantraḥ puruṣārthacatuṣṭayam ..
This single great mantra is the very cause
2.2.28.45
prāptuṃ kāraṇabhūto hi kiṃ punaḥ kṣudrakāmanām .. 22 ..
for obtaining the four aims of human life; what need to speak of trivial desires?
2.2.28.46
eka eva mahāmaṃtraḥ sarvakratuphalapradaḥ ..
This single great mantra grants the fruit of all sacrifices;
2.2.28.47
sarvatīrthapradaḥ sarvadānavrataphalapradaḥ .. 23 ..
it grants [the merit of] all sacred fords; it grants the fruit of all gifts and vows.
2.2.28.48
yathāyaṃ sarvapāpaughatūlarāśerdavānalaḥ ..
Just as this god in the form of a divine lion is a forest fire
2.2.28.49
divyasiṃhākṛtirdevo maṃtrarājñastathā hyayam .. 24 ..
to the heap of cotton that is all heaps of sin, so too is this king of mantras.
2.2.28.50
enamabhyasya yatayo bhavaroga tyajaṃti hi ..
Practicing this, ascetics indeed cast off the disease of worldly existence.
2.2.28.51
yasya grahaṇamātreṇa grahāpasmārarākṣasāḥ .. 25 ..
By merely receiving it, seizing spirits, epilepsy, Rākṣasas,
2.2.28.52
ḍākinyo bhūtavetālapiśācā uragā grahāḥ ..
Ḍākinīs, Bhūtas, Vetālas, Piśācas, serpents, and malevolent planets
2.2.28.53
dūrādeva palāyaṃte neśate vīkṣituṃ ca tam .. 26 ..
flee from afar, nor are they able even to look upon him.
2.2.28.54
maṃtrarājaṃ tato labdhvā indradyumnaścaturmukhāt ..
Then, having obtained the king of mantras from the four-faced one, Indradyumna saw
2.2.28.55
nṛsiṃhaṃ śātavapuṣaṃ lakṣmīsaṃśritavakṣasam .. 27 ..
Nṛsiṃha, whose body was radiant, whose chest was embraced by Lakṣmī,
2.2.28.56
cakraṃ pinākaṃ dadhataṃ caṃdrasūryāgnicakṣuṣam ..
holding the discus and the bow, whose eyes were the moon, sun, and fire,
2.2.28.57
jānuprasāritakarasarojadvaṃdvamunnasam .. 28 ..
whose pair of lotus hands were extended over his knees, having an elevated nose,
2.2.28.58
yogapaṭṭāsanārūḍhadvātriṃśaddalapadmake ..
seated comfortably in the yogapaṭṭa posture upon a thirty-two-petalled lotus
2.2.28.59
maṃtravarṇamaye madhye karṇikāpraṇavojjvale .. 29 ..
composed of the letters of the mantra, in the center shining with the praṇava on the pericarp,
2.2.28.60
sukhāsīnaṃ sāṭṭahāsaṃ vīkṣaṃtaṃ śrīmukhāṃbujam ..
laughing heartily, gazing at his auspicious lotus face,
2.2.28.61
saṭāmaṃḍitavaktrābjaṃ divyaratnojjvalākṛti .. 2.2.28.30 ..
his lotus face adorned with a mane, his form gleaming with divine jewels;
2.2.28.62
phaṇāsahasraṃ vistārya paścācchatrākṛtiṃ vibhoḥ ..
and behind the all-pervading lord, spreading a thousand hoods in the form of an umbrella,
2.2.28.63
dadarśa balabhadraṃ taṃ halalāṃgaladhāriṇam .. 31 ..
he saw Balabhadra, who wields the ploughshare and plough.
2.2.28.64
prajaharṣa nṛpo dṛṣṭvā tādṛśaṃ puruṣottamam ..
Having seen Puruṣottama of such a kind, the king rejoiced;
2.2.28.65
vismayāviṣṭacetāśca papraccha kamalāsanam .. 32 ..
and, his mind filled with wonder, he asked the lotus-seated one:
2.2.28.66
bhagavaṃścitrametadvai caritaṃ madhughātinaḥ ..
“O Lord, wondrous indeed is this deed of the slayer of Madhu!
2.2.28.67
vijñātuṃ kathamasmābhiḥ śakyaḥ syāllokabhāvana .. 33 ..
How could it be possible for us to comprehend it, O creator of the worlds?
2.2.28.68
yajñāṃte tādṛśaṃ rūpaṃ babhāra dārunirmitam ..
At the conclusion of the sacrifice, he assumed such a form made of wood;
2.2.28.69
rathasthaṃ bhagavāneva prāsādāṃtarnyaveśayat .. 34 ..
and the Lord himself, mounted on a chariot, entered inside the temple.
2.2.28.70
māmāha pūrvaṃ vāṇī sā gaganāṃtaritā tadā ..
That voice concealed in the sky previously said to me:
2.2.28.71
apauruṣeyataruṇā caturmūrtirbhaviṣyati .. 35 ..
‘By means of the super-human tree, there will be four forms.’
2.2.28.72
idānīmeka evāsau dṛśyate supratiṣṭhitaḥ ..
Now he is seen well-established as one alone.
2.2.28.73
māyā vā tattvamatha vā tattvato me vada prabho .. 36 ..
Is this māyā, or is it reality? Tell me according to reality, O Lord,
2.2.28.74
śravaṇe yadi māṃ vetsi bhājanaṃ bhavabhāvana ..
if you consider me a worthy vessel to hear it, O creator of existence!”
2.2.28.75
śrutvaitatpratyuvācātha saṃśayānaṃ nṛpottamam .. 37 ..
Hearing this, [Brahmā] then replied to that best of kings who was filled with doubt.
2.2.28.76
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
2.2.28.77
ādyā mūrtirbhagavato nārasiṃhākṛtirnṛpa ..
“The primordial form of the Lord has the appearance of Nārasiṃha, O king,
2.2.28.78
nārāyaṇena prathitā madanugrahatastvayi .. 38 ..
revealed to you by Nārāyaṇa out of grace toward me.
2.2.28.79
dāravī mūrtireṣeti pratimābuddhiratra vai ..
‘This is a wooden form’—such a notion that it is merely an image
2.2.28.80
mā bhūtte nṛpaśārdūla paraṃ brahmākṛtistviyam .. 39 ..
should not be yours, O tiger among kings! For this is the form of the supreme Brahman.
2.2.28.81
khaṃḍanātsarvaduḥkhānāmakhaṃḍānaṃdadānataḥ ..
Because it cuts through (khaṇḍanāt) all sufferings and because it bestows unbroken (akhaṇḍa) bliss,
2.2.28.82
svabhāvāddārureṣo hi paraṃ brahmābhidhīyate .. 2.2.28.40 ..
this wood (dāru) by its very nature is called the supreme Brahman.
2.2.28.83
itthaṃ dārumayo devaścaturvedānusārataḥ ..
Thus the god made of wood, in accordance with the four Vedas,
2.2.28.84
sraṣṭā sa jagatāṃ tasmādātmānaṃ cāpi sṛṣṭavān .. 41 ..
is the creator of the worlds, and from that he also created himself.
2.2.28.85
śabdabrahma paraṃbrahma nānayorbheda iṣyate ..
Between the Brahman as sound (śabdabrahman) and the supreme Brahman, no difference is admitted;
2.2.28.86
laye tu ekamevedaṃ sṛṣṭau bhedaḥ pravarttate .. 42 ..
in dissolution this is only one, but in creation difference operates.”
2.2.28.87
anyonyāpekṣiṇau bhūpa śabdārthau hi parasparam..
Word and meaning are mutually interdependent, O king;
2.2.28.88
arthābhāvena śabdo'sti śabdābhāvena buddhyate .. 43 ..
a word exists for the purpose of meaning, and through a word [meaning] is understood.
2.2.28.89
arthastasmāccaturvedāḥ śabdā hyarthāśca tādṛśāḥ ..
Therefore, the four Vedas are the meaning; the words and meanings are of such nature.
2.2.28.90
ṛgvedarūpī haladhṛksāmavedo nṛkesarī .. 44 ..
The plough-bearer (Balarāma) has the form of the Ṛgveda; the man-lion (Nṛsiṃha) is the Sāmaveda.
2.2.28.91
yajurmūrttistviyaṃ bhadrā cakramātharvaṇaṃ smṛtam ..
This Subhadrā is the form of the Yajurveda; the discus is considered to be the Atharvaveda.
2.2.28.92
vedaścaturddhā bhedo'yamekarāśirabhedataḥ .. 45 ..
The Veda is fourfold; this division forms a single mass through non-difference.
2.2.28.93
ataste saṃśayo mā bhūdekastu bahudhā vibhuḥ ..
Therefore let there be no doubt in you: the all-pervading Lord is one, yet manifold.
2.2.28.94
avatāreṣu cānyeṣu nyāyenaitena varttate .. 46 ..
And in his other incarnations he operates according to this same rule.
2.2.28.95
bhedābhedau tathā khyātau jagannāthasya te nṛpa ..
Thus both difference and non-difference of Jagannātha have been declared to you, O king.
2.2.28.96
yena te manasastuṣṭistena bhaktyā samācara .. 47 ..
Practice [worship] with devotion according to whatever pleases your mind.
2.2.28.97
sarvarūpamayo hyeṣa sarvamaṃtramayaḥ prabhuḥ ..
For this Lord consists of all forms and consists of all mantras.
2.2.28.98
ārādhyate yathā yena tathā tasya phalapradaḥ .. 48 ..
Just as and by whomsoever he is worshipped, in that very manner he bestows fruits upon him.
2.2.28.99
yathā suśuddhaṃ kanakaṃ svecchayā ghaṭitaṃ nṛpa ..
Just as purely refined gold, fashioned according to one's desire, O king,
2.2.28.100
tattatsaṃjñāmavāpyeha tattatsaṃtoṣakārakam .. 49 ..
obtaining various designations in this world, produces various kinds of satisfaction,
2.2.28.101
evaṃ mahimnā bhagavānatrāvirabhavannṛpa ..
even so the Blessed Lord has manifested here by his majesty, O king.
2.2.28.102
yasya yāvāṃstu viśvāsastasya siddhistu tāvatī .. 2.2.28.50 ..
Whatever trust a person has, so great is his attainment of perfection.
2.2.28.103
karmaṇā manasā vācā viśuddhenāṃtarātmanā ..
With an inner self purified by action, mind, and speech,
2.2.28.104
samārādhaya goviṃdamatra dāruvapurddharam .. 51 ..
worship Govinda here, who bears a wooden body,
2.2.28.105
caturvargaphalāvāptyai yathābhilaṣitaṃ tava ..
in order to attain the fruit of the four goals of life as desired by you.
2.2.28.106
anena maṃtrarājena viṣṇumenaṃ samarcaya .. 52 ..
Worship this Viṣṇu with this king of mantras.
2.2.28.107
nātaḥ parataro maṃtro na bhūto na bhaviṣyati ..
There is no mantra superior to this, nor has there been, nor will there be.
2.2.28.108
anenābhyarcito viṣṇuḥ prīto bhavati tatkṣaṇāt .. 53 ..
Worshipped with this, Viṣṇu becomes pleased that very moment;
2.2.28.109
dadāti svapuraṃ cāpi bhagavānbhaktavatsalaḥ ..
the Blessed Lord, who is affectionate to his devotees, grants even his own abode.
2.2.28.110
yajñaistīrthairvratairdānaistapobhiścāpi tasya kim .. 54 ..
What need has he of sacrifices, sacred fords, observances, gifts, and austerities,
2.2.28.111
nīlācalasthaṃ yo viṣṇuṃ dārumūrtimupāsti vai ..
who worships Viṣṇu in wooden form stationed on Nīlācala?
2.2.28.112
tattvaṃ bravīmi te bhūpa śrutvaitadavadhāraya .. 55 ..
I tell you the truth, O king; having heard it, keep it in mind:
2.2.28.113
nyagrodhamūle kūle'sya siṃdhornīlācale sthitam ..
stationed on Nīlācala at the base of the banyan tree on the shore of this ocean,
2.2.28.114
dāruvyājāmṛtaṃ brahma dṛṣṭvā mucyenna saṃśaya .. 56 ..
having seen Brahman disguised as wood, which is immortal, one is liberated; there is no doubt.
2.2.28.115
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe puruṣottamakṣetramāhātmye jaiminiṛṣisaṃvāde'ṣṭāviṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 28 ..
Thus ends the twenty-eighth chapter, in the dialogue of the sage Jaimini, in the Glorification of the Puruṣottama-kṣetra, in the second Vaiṣṇava Section, in the venerable Skanda Mahāpurāṇa containing eighty-one thousand verses.
