they remained fearful of him. Then the daitya reflected:

hṛtādhikārāstridaśā mayā yadyapi nirjitāḥ ..
"Although the thirty [gods] have had their authority taken away and have been conquered by me,
2.4.13.58

2.4.13.61
iti matvā tato daityo viṣṇumālakṣya nidritam..
Thinking thus, then, observing that Viṣṇu was asleep,
2.4.13.62
satyalokājjahārāśu vedānādisvayaṃbhuvaḥ .. 28 ..
the daitya quickly seized the Vedas of the primeval self-manifest [Brahmā] from Satyaloka.
2.4.13.63
nītāstu tena te vedāstadbhayātte nirākraman ..
Carried away by him, those Vedas escaped out of fear of him;
2.4.13.64
toyāni viviśuryajñamaṃtrabījasamanvitāḥ .. 29 ..
accompanied by the seed-syllables of sacrificial mantras, they entered the waters.
2.4.13.65
tānmārgamāṇaḥ śaṃkho'pi samudrāṃtargato bhraman ..
Searching for them, even Śaṅkha, wandering inside the ocean,
2.4.13.66
na dadarśa tadā daityaḥ kvacidekatra saṃsthitān ..
did not see them gathered together anywhere at that time, O daitya!
2.4.13.67
atha devaiḥ stuto viṣṇurbodhitastānuvāca ha .. .. 2.4.13.30 ..
Then Viṣṇu, praised by the gods and awakened, spoke to them:
2.4.13.68
.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:
2.4.13.69
varado'haṃ suragaṇā gītavādyādimaṃgalaiḥ .. 31 ..
"I am the granter of boons, O hosts of gods! By auspicious songs, musical instruments, and the like,

All the Vedas stolen by Śaṅkha are residing in the water.
2.4.13.73
tānānayāmyahaṃ devā hatvā sāgaranaṃdanam .. 33 ..
I shall bring them back, O gods, having slain the son of the ocean.
2.4.13.74
adyaprabhṛti vedāstu maṃtrabījasamanvitāḥ ..
From this day forward, let the Vedas, accompanied by the seed-syllables of mantras,
2.4.13.75
pratyabdaṃ kārtike māsi viśramaṃtvapsu sarvadā .. 34 ..
always rest in the waters every year during the month of Kārtika.
2.4.13.76
kāle'sminye prakurvaṃti prātaḥsnānaṃ narottamāḥ ..
The best among men who perform morning ritual ablution at this time,
2.4.13.77
te sarve yajñā'vabhṛthaiḥ susnātāḥ syurna saṃśayaḥ .. 35 ..
they would all become well-bathed with the concluding baths of sacrifices—of this there is no doubt.
2.4.13.78
adyaprabhṛtyahamapi bhavāmi jalamadhyagaḥ ..
From this day forward, I too shall dwell amidst the waters.
2.4.13.79
bhavanto'pi mayā sārddhamāyāṃtu samunīśvarāḥ .. 36 ..
You also, together with the lords of sages, come along with me!
2.4.13.80
kātikavratināṃ ceṃdra rakṣā kāryā tvayā sadā ..
And, O Indra, protection is always to be provided by you to those observing the Kārtika vow."
2.4.13.81
ityuktvā bhagavānviṣṇuḥ śapharītulyarūpadhṛk ..
Having spoken thus, the Lord Viṣṇu, assuming a form resembling a śapharī fish,
2.4.13.82
khātpapāta jale viṃdhyavāsinaḥ kasya paśyataḥ .. 37 ..
fell from the sky into the water while a certain dweller of the Vindhya was watching.
2.4.13.83
hatvā śaṃkhāsuraṃ viṣṇurbadarīvanamāgamat ..
Having slain the asura Śaṅkha, Viṣṇu went to the Badarī forest.
2.4.13.84
tatrā''hūya ṛṣīnsarvānidamājñāpayatprabhuḥ .. 38 ..
Summoning all the seers there, the Lord commanded this:
2.4.13.85
viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:
2.4.13.86
jalāṃtaraviśīrṇāṃstānyūyaṃ vedānpramārgatha ..
"Search for those Vedas scattered within the waters,
2.4.13.87
ānayadhvaṃ ca tvaritāḥ sāgarasya jalāṃtarāt ..
and swiftly bring them from within the waters of the ocean.
2.4.13.88
tāvatprayāgaṃ tiṣṭhāmi devatāgaṇasaṃyutaḥ.. .. 39 ..
Meanwhile, I shall remain at Prayāga accompanied by the hosts of deities."

.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.4.13.90
tatastaissarvamunibhistapobalasamanvitaiḥ .. 2.4.13.40 ..
'Then, by all those sages endowed with the power of austerity,
2.4.13.91
uddhṛtāśca sabījāste vedā yajñasamanvitāḥ ..
those Vedas, accompanied by sacrifices and endowed with their seeds, were drawn up.
2.4.13.92
teṣu yāvanmitaṃ yena labdhaṃ tāvaddhi tasya tat .. 41 ..
Among them, whatever portion was obtained by whomever, that indeed belonged to him.
2.4.13.93
sa sa eva ṛṣirjātastattatprabhṛti pārthiva ..
From that point onward, O king, each one became the seer of that [particular part].'
2.4.13.94
atha sarve'pi saṃgamya prayāgaṃ munayo yayuḥ .. 42 ..
Then all the sages gathered together and went to Prayāga.
2.4.13.95
viṣṇave savidhātre te labdhānvedānnyavedayan ..
They presented the recovered Vedas to Viṣṇu and the Creator.
2.4.13.96
labdhvā vedānsamagrāṃstu brahmā harṣasamanvitaḥ .. 43 ..
Having obtained all the Vedas, Brahmā, filled with joy,
2.4.13.97
ayajadvājimedhena devarṣigaṇasaṃyutaḥ ..
sacrificed with a horse sacrifice, accompanied by the hosts of celestial seers.
2.4.13.98
yajñāṃ'te devatāḥ sarve vijñaptiṃ cakruraṃjasā .. 44 ..
At the end of the sacrifice, all the gods quickly made a petition:
2.4.13.99
.. devā ūcuḥ .. ..
The gods said:
2.4.13.100
devadeva jagannātha vijñaptiṃ śṛṇu naḥ prabho ..
O God of gods, Lord of the universe, O Lord, listen to our request!
2.4.13.101
harṣakālo'yamasmākaṃ tasmāttvaṃ varado bhava .. 45 ..
This is a time of joy for us; therefore, grant us a boon!
2.4.13.102
sthāne'smindruhiṇo vedānnaṣṭānprāpa punastvayam ..
In this sacred spot, Brahmā recovered the lost Vedas,
2.4.13.103
yajñabhāgānvayaṃ prāptāstvatprasādādramāpate .. 46 ..
and by your grace, O husband of Ramā, we have received our sacrificial shares.
2.4.13.104
sthānametaddhi naḥ śreṣṭhaṃ pṛthivyāṃ puṇyavardhanam ..
May this spot on earth be the best for us, increasing merit,

and may what is given here become inexhaustible. Grant us such a boon!

.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:

O gods, that which has been stated by you is chosen by me as well.
2.4.13.110
