.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.4.17.2
sa māṃ provāca vidhivatsaṃpūjyātīva bhaktimān ..
Having worshipped me according to rule, full of great devotion,
2.4.17.3
saṃprahasya tadā vākyaṃ snehapūrvaṃ ca vai nṛpa .. 1 ..
he then spoke words to me with a smile and with affection, O king:
2.4.17.4
kuta āgamyate brahmankiciddṛṣṭaṃ tvayā prabho ..
“From where have you come, O holy one? Has anything been seen by you, O master?
2.4.17.5
yadarthamiha cā''yātastadā''jñāpaya māṃ mune ..2..
Instruct me, O sage, concerning the purpose for which you have arrived here.”
2.4.17.6
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.4.17.7
gataḥ kailāsaśikharaṃ daityeṃdrāhaṃ yadṛcchayā ..
“I went to the peak of Kailāsa of my own accord, O lord of Daityas;
2.4.17.8
tatromayā samāsīnaṃ dṛṣṭavānasmi śaṃkaram..3..
there I saw Śaṃkara seated together with Umā.”
2.4.17.9
yojanāyutavistīrṇe kalpavṛkṣamahāvane ..
In a great grove of wish-fulfilling trees extending ten thousand yojanas,
2.4.17.10
kāmadhenuśatākīrṇe ciṃtāmaṇisudīpite ..4..
abounding with hundreds of wish-granting cows, and brilliantly illuminated by wish-fulfilling gems.
2.4.17.11
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṃ vismayo me'bhavattadā ..
Seeing that great wonder, astonishment arose in me then:
2.4.17.12
kvā'pīdṛśī bhavedṛddhistrailokye vā na veti ca ..5..
‘Could such opulence exist anywhere in the three worlds, or not?’
2.4.17.13
tadā tavā'pi daityeṃdra samṛddhiḥ saṃsmṛtā mayā ..
Then, O king of Daityas, your opulence too was remembered by me;
2.4.17.14
tadvilokanakāmo'smi tvatsānnidhyamihā''gataḥ .. 6 ..
desiring to see it, I have come here to your presence.
2.4.17.15
tvatsamṛddhimimāṃ paśyanstrīratnarahitāṃ dhuvam ..
Looking upon this opulence of yours, surely devoid of that jewel among women,
2.4.17.16
tarkayāmi śivādanyastrilokyāṃ na samṛddhimān .. 7 ..
I judge that none other than Śiva in the three worlds possesses true opulence.
2.4.17.17
apsaronāgakanyādyā yadyapi tvadvaśe sthitāḥ ..
Although apsarases, Nāga maidens, and others remain subject to you,
2.4.17.18
tathā'pi tā na pārvatyā rūpeṇa sadṛśā dhruvam .. 8 ..
even so, they are surely not equal to Pārvatī in beauty.
2.4.17.19
yasyā lāvaṇyajaladhau nimagnaścaturānanaḥ ..
The four-faced [Brahmā], drowned in the ocean of her loveliness,
2.4.17.20
svadhairyamamucatpūrvaṃ tayā kā'nyopamīyate .. 9 ..
abandoned his own steadfastness of old; what other woman can be compared to her?
2.4.17.21
vītarāgo'pi hi yathā madanāriḥ svalīlayā ..
Even the enemy of Madana, though free from passion, by his own divine play
2.4.17.22
sauṃdaryagahane'bhrāmi śapharīrūpayā purā .. 2.4.17.10 ..
roamed formerly in the deep forest of beauty with her in the form of a saphara fish.
2.4.17.23
yasyāḥ punaḥ punaḥ paśyanrūpaṃ dhātā'pi sarjane ..
Looking again and again at her beauty during creation, even the Creator
2.4.17.24
sasarjā'psarasastāsāṃ tatsamaikā'pi nābhavat .. 11 ..
created the apsarases; yet not one among them was equal to her.
2.4.17.25
ataḥ strīratnasaṃbhoktuḥ samṛddhistasya sā varā ..
Therefore, that opulence belongs to him who enjoys the jewel among women; it is superior;
2.4.17.26
tathā na tava daityeṃdra sarvaratnā'dhipasya ca .. 12 ..
it is not so for you, O king of Daityas, though you are the master of all jewels.”
2.4.17.27
evamuktvā tamāmaṃtrya gate sati sa daityarāṭ ..
Having spoken thus, when he had taken his leave and departed, the king of Daityas,
2.4.17.28
tadrūpa śravaṇādāsīdanaṃgajvarapīḍitaḥ .. 13 ..
from hearing of her beauty, became afflicted with the fever of love.
2.4.17.29
atha saṃpreṣayāmāsa sa dūtaṃ siṃhikāsutam ..
Then, deluded by the illusion of Viṣṇu, he dispatched
2.4.17.30
tryaṃbakāyā'pi ca tadā viṣṇumāyāvimohitaḥ .. 14 ..
the son of Siṃhikā as a messenger to Tryambaka.
2.4.17.31
kailāsamagamadrāhuḥ kurvañchukleṃduvarcasam ..
Rāhu went to Kailāsa, causing the luster of the waxing moon
2.4.17.32
kārṣṇyena kṛṣṇapakṣenduvarcasaṃ svāṃgajena tam .. 15 ..
to have the luster of the waning moon by the darkness born of his own limbs.
2.4.17.33
niveditastadeśāya naṃdinā praviveśa saḥ ..
Announced then to the Lord by Nandin, he entered;
2.4.17.34
tryaṃbakabhrūlatāsaṃjñā prerito vākyamabravīt .. 16 ..
impelled by a signal from Tryambaka's creeper-like eyebrow, he spoke these words:
2.4.17.35
.. rāhuruvāca .. ..
Rāhu said:
2.4.17.36
devapannagasevyasya trailokyādhipateḥ prabhoḥ ..
“Of the master of the three worlds, the lord served by gods and serpents,
2.4.17.37
sarvaratneśvarasya tvamājñāṃ śṛṇu vṛṣadhvaja .. 17 ..
the ruler of all jewels, hear the command, O bull-bannered god!
2.4.17.38
smaśānavāsino nityamasthibhāravahasya ca ..
To you, who constantly dwell in the cremation ground, who carry a load of bones,
2.4.17.39
digaṃbarasya te bhāryā kathaṃ haimavatī śubhā .. 18 ..
and who are sky-clad, how is the auspicious daughter of Himavat suitable as a wife?
2.4.17.40
ahaṃ ratnādhinātho'smi sā ca strīratnasaṃjñikā ..
I am the supreme lord of jewels, and she is called the jewel among women;
2.4.17.41
tasmānmamaiva sā yogyā naiva bhikṣāśinastava .. 19 ..
therefore, she is fit for me alone, not at all for you who eat begged food!”
2.4.17.42
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.4.17.43
vadatyevaṃ tadā rāhau bhrūmadhyācchūlapāṇinaḥ ..
Even as Rāhu was speaking thus, from between the eyebrows of the trident-bearer
2.4.17.44
abhavatpuruṣo raudrastīvrāśanisamasvanaḥ .. 2.4.17.20 ..
arose a fierce person, roaring like a violent thunderbolt,
2.4.17.45
siṃhāsyaḥ pralalajjihvaḥ sa jvalannayano mahān ..
lion-faced, with a lolling tongue, having blazing eyes, huge,
2.4.17.46
ūrdhvakeśaḥ śuṣkatanurnṛsiṃha iva cā'paraḥ .. 21 ..
with hair standing upright and an emaciated body, like another Nṛsiṃha.
2.4.17.47
sa taṃ khāditumāyāṃtaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāhurbhayāturaḥ ..
Seeing him coming to devour him, Rāhu, overwhelmed with fear,
2.4.17.48
adhāvata sa vegena bahiḥ sa ca dadhāra tam .. 22 ..
ran swiftly outside, and he seized him.
2.4.17.49
sa ca rāhurmahābāho meghagambhīrayā girā ..
And that Rāhu, O mighty-armed one, with a voice deep as a thundercloud,
2.4.17.50
uvāca devadeva tvaṃ pāhi māṃ śaraṇāgatam ..23..
said: “O God of gods, protect me, who have sought refuge!
2.4.17.51
brāhmaṇaṃ māṃ mahādeva khādituṃ samupāgataḥ ..
O Mahādeva, he has come forward to devour me, a brahmin!”
2.4.17.52
mahādevo vacaḥ śrutvā brāhmaṇasya tadā'bravīt ..24..
Hearing the word of the brahmin, Mahādeva then said:
2.4.17.53
naivā'sau vadhyatāmeti dūto'yaṃ paravānyataḥ ..
“This one must not be killed, because he is a messenger subject to another.”
2.4.17.54
muṃceti puruṣaḥ śrutvā rāhuṃ tatyājya soṃ'bare ..25..
Hearing “Release [him]!” that person released Rāhu in the sky.
2.4.17.55
rāhuṃ tyaktvā'tha puruṣastadā rudraṃ vyajijñapat ..
Having released Rāhu, that person then petitioned Rudra:
2.4.17.56
.. puruṣa uvāca .. ..
The person said:
2.4.17.57
kṣudhā māṃ vādhate'tyaṃtaṃ kṣutkṣāmaścā'smi sarvathā .. 26 ..
“Hunger torments me exceedingly, and I am completely wasted with hunger.
2.4.17.58
kiṃ bhakṣayāmi deveśa tadājñāpaya māṃ prabho ..
What shall I eat, O Lord of gods? Command me, O Master!”
2.4.17.59
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..
Īśvara said:
2.4.17.60
bhakṣayasvātmanaḥ śīghraṃ māṃsaṃ tvaṃ hastapādayoḥ .. 27 ..
“Quickly eat the flesh of your own hands and feet!”
2.4.17.61
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.4.17.62
sa śivenaivamājñaptaścakhāda puruṣaḥ svakam..
Ordered thus by Śiva, that person ate his own
2.4.17.63
hastapādodbhavaṃ māṃsaṃ śiraḥśeṣo yathā'bhavat .. 28 ..
flesh of his hands and feet, so that only his head remained.
2.4.17.64
dṛṣṭvā śiro'vaśeṣaṃ taṃ suprasannastadā śivaḥ ..
Seeing that only his head remained, Śiva, exceedingly pleased then,
2.4.17.65
uvāca bhīmakarmāṇaṃ puruṣaṃ jātavismayaḥ .. 29 ..
said to the person of dreadful deeds, filled with wonder:
2.4.17.66
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..
Īśvara said:
2.4.17.67
tvaṃ kīrtimukhasaṃjño hi bhava maddvārigaḥ sadā ..
“Be named Kīrtimukha, always situated at my door;
2.4.17.68
tvadarcāṃ ye na kurvaṃti naiva te me priyaṃkarāḥ .. 2.4.17.30 .. *
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
those who do not perform your worship do not please me at all!”
Nārada said:
2.4.17.69
tadā prabhṛti devasya dvāri kīrtimukhaḥ sthitaḥ ..
From that time forth, Kīrtimukha remained at the door of the god.
2.4.17.70
nārcayantīha ye pūrvaṃ teṣāmarcā vṛthā bhavet ..31..
For those who do not worship him first, worship becomes in vain. (31)
2.4.17.71
rāhurvimukto yastena so'pi tadbarbare sthale ..
The Rāhu who was released by him also [went] to that Barbaric place.
2.4.17.72
ataḥ sa barbarodbhūta iti bhūmau prathāṃ gataḥ .. 32 ..
Therefore, he became known on earth as ‘born of Barbara’. (32)
2.4.17.73
tataḥ sa rāhuḥ punareva jātamātmānamasminniti manyamānaḥ ..
Then that Rāhu, considering himself to have been born anew in that place,
2.4.17.74
sametya sarvaṃ kathayāṃbabhūva jalaṃdharāyaiva viceṣṭitaṃ tat .. 33 ..
approached Jalandhara and recounted that entire encounter. (33)
2.4.17.75
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe kārtikamāsamāhātmye jalaṃdharopākhyāne dūtavākyakathanaṃnāma saptadaśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 17 ..
Thus ends the seventeenth chapter, titled “Account of the Messenger’s Words,” in the Jalandhara story, in the Māhātmya of the Month of Kārttika, in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skandamahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses. (17)
2.4.17.76
