having then circumambulated it, bowed down full of devotion. (23)
2.4.8.50
dṛṣṭvaitaddharimedhāstu uvāca parayā mudā ..

2.4.8.51
jñātuṃ tulasyā māhātmyaṃ tatphalaṃ ca punaḥpunaḥ .. 24 .. ..
in order to learn the māhātmya of tulasī and its fruit again and again, said: (24)

.. harimedhā uvāca .. ..
Harimedhas said:
2.4.8.53
kimarthaṃ vipra deveṣu tīrtheṣu ca vrateṣu ca ..
For what reason, O brahmin, when gods, sacred fords, and vows,
2.4.8.54
sthiteṣu vipramukhyeṣu praṇāmaṃ kṛtavānasi .. 25 ..
and foremost brahmins are present, have you offered obeisance [here]? (25)

.. sumedhā uvāca .. ..
Sumedhas said:
2.4.8.56
śṛṇu vipra mahābhāga sādhu vākyamudīritam ..
Listen, fortunate brahmin; you have spoken well.
2.4.8.57
ātapo bādhate hyāvāṃ gatvaitadvaṭasannidhau .. 26 ..

2.4.8.58
tasyacchāyāṃ samāśritya vakṣyāmi te yathārthataḥ ..
and resorting to its shade, I will tell you according to the truth.
2.4.8.59
evamuktaḥ sumedhāstu harimedhena saṃyutaḥ .. 27 ..
Having spoken thus, Sumedhas, accompanied by Harimedhas,
2.4.8.60
vaṭaṃ jagāma dharmajño mahatkoṭarasaṃyutam ..
who knew righteousness, went to the banyan tree endowed with a large hollow.
2.4.8.61
tatra viśrāmya viprosau harimedhamuvāca ha .. 28 ..
Resting there, that brahmin spoke indeed to Harimedhas:
2.4.8.62
śrūyatāṃ vipraśārdūla tulasyāstūttamāṃ kathām ..
“Let the excellent story of Tulasī be heard, O tiger among brahmins,
2.4.8.63
parameśaprasādena saṃjātā yā payonidhau .. 29 ..
who arose in the ocean of milk through the grace of the Supreme Lord.
2.4.8.64
purā durvāsasaḥ śāpādgataiśvarye puraṃdare ..
Formerly, when Puraṃdara’s sovereignty was lost through the curse of Durvāsas,
2.4.8.65
mamaṃthuḥ kṣīrajaladhiṃ brahmādyāḥ sasurā'surāḥ .. 2.4.8.30 ..
Brahmā and others, along with the gods and asuras, churned the ocean of milk.
2.4.8.66
airāvataḥ kalpataruścandramāḥ kamalā tathā ..

2.4.8.67
uccaiḥśravā kaustubhaśca tathā dhanvantarirhariḥ .. 31 ..
Uccaiḥśravas, the Kaustubha gem, and likewise Dhanvantari and Hari;
2.4.8.68
harītakyādayaścā'pi divyā oṣadhayastathā ..
and the myrobalan and other divine medicinal plants—
2.4.8.69
ajāyanta dvijaśreṣṭha lokaśreyovidhāyakāḥ .. 32 ..
these were born, O best among the twice-born, bestowing welfare upon the world.
2.4.8.70
tataḥ pīyūṣakalaśamajarāmaradāyakam ..
Then, holding in both hands the pot of nectar
2.4.8.71
karābhyāṃ kalaśaṃ viṣṇurdhārayansutalaṃ param ..
that grants agelessness and immortality—the supreme, beautiful vessel—
2.4.8.72
avekṣya manasā sadyaḥ parāṃ nirvṛtimāpa ha .. 33 ..
Viṣṇu, seeing it with his mind, immediately attained supreme bliss.
2.4.8.73
tasminpīyūṣakalaśa ānandāsrodabindavaḥ ..
Tears of joy fell into that pot of nectar,
2.4.8.74
vyapataṃstulasī sadyaḥ samajāyata maṇḍalā .. 34 ..
and instantly Tulasī was born, circular in form,
2.4.8.75
sarva lakṣaṇasaṃpannā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā .. 35 ..
endowed with all auspicious marks, adorned with all ornaments.
2.4.8.76
tatrotpannāṃ tathā lakṣmīṃ tulasīṃ ca dadurhareḥ ..
The gods, Brahmā and the rest, then gave Lakṣmī, who had arisen there, and Tulasī to Hari;
2.4.8.77
devā brahmādayaste hi jagṛhe bhagavānhariḥ .. 36 ..
and the blessed Lord Hari accepted [them].
2.4.8.78
tato'tīva priyakarā tulasī jagatāṃ pateḥ..37..
Thenceforth, Tulasī became exceedingly dear to the Lord of the worlds.
2.4.8.79
sā tu devagaṇaiḥ sarvairviṣṇuvatpūjyate priyā ..
She, the beloved, is worshipped like Viṣṇu by all the hosts of gods.
2.4.8.80
nārāyaṇo jagattrātā tulasī tasya vallabhā ..38..
Nārāyaṇa is the protector of the universe, and Tulasī is his beloved.
2.4.8.81
tasmāttasyā namaskāro mayā vipra kṛtastataḥ ..
Therefore obeisance was made to her by me, O brahmin.”
2.4.8.82
ityevaṃ vadatastasya sumedhasya mahātmanaḥ .. 39 ..
As the high-souled Sumedhas was speaking thus,
2.4.8.83
ārādadṛśyata mahadvimānaṃ sūryavarcasam ..
a great aerial chariot, radiant like the sun, was seen nearby.
2.4.8.84
tadānīṃ vaṭavṛkṣastu papāta purato mune ..2.4.8.40..
At that moment, O sage, the banyan tree fell before [them].
2.4.8.85
tathaiva tasmādvṛkṣācca puruṣau dvau vinirgatau ..
And likewise from that tree two men emerged,
2.4.8.86
dyotayaṃtau diśaḥ sarvāstejasā sūryasannibhau .. 41 ..
illuminating all quarters with their splendour, resembling the sun.
2.4.8.87
praṇāmaṃ cakratustau hi harimedhasumedhayoḥ ..
The two of them bowed down to Harimedhas and Sumedhas.
2.4.8.88
harimedhasumedhau tau tau dṛṣṭvā bhayavihvalau .. 42..
Harimedhas and Sumedhas, seeing them, were overcome with fear.
2.4.8.89
ūcaturvismayāviṣṭau tāvubhau devasannibhau ..43..
Filled with wonder, the two said to those two who resembled gods:
2.4.8.90
harimedhasumedhasāvūcatuḥ ..
Harimedhas and Sumedhas said:
2.4.8.91
yuvāṃ kau devasaṃkāśau bhavaṃtau sarvamaṃgalau ..
“Who are you two, who resemble gods and are all-auspicious,
2.4.8.92
maṃdāramālāṃ taruṇāṃ dhārayaṃtau tathā'marau ..
wearing garlands of fresh mandāra flowers, like immortals,
2.4.8.93
namaskāryau tathā''vābhyāṃ pūjyau ca surarūpiṇau .. 44 ..
worthy of our salutation and worship, having the form of celestials?”
2.4.8.94
ityuktau brāhmaṇābhyāṃ tāvūcaturvṛkṣanirgatau ..
Thus addressed by the two brahmins, the two who had emerged from the tree said:
2.4.8.95
yuvāmeva pitā mātā āvayośca tathā guruḥ ..45..
“You two alone are our father, mother, and likewise teacher;
2.4.8.96
baṃdhvādayastathā caiva yuvāmeva na saṃśayaḥ ..
and you two alone are our kinsmen and others, without doubt.”
2.4.8.97
jyeṣṭha uvāca .. ..
The elder one said:
2.4.8.98
ahaṃ tu devalokasya āstīkonāma nāmataḥ .. 46 ..
“I belong to the heavenly world, named Āstīka by name.
2.4.8.99
apsarogaṇasaṃvītaḥ kadācinnaṃdana vanam ..
Surrounded by a group of apsarases, once to the Nandana forest
2.4.8.100
krīḍārthamagamaṃ cādrau viṣayāsakta cetanaḥ .. 47 ..
and to a mountain I went for pleasure, my mind attached to sensual objects.
2.4.8.101
remire devavanitā yathākāmaṃ mayā saha ..
The celestial women dallied with me as they pleased.
2.4.8.102
muktāmallikamālyāni nipetustāni yoṣitām .. 48 ..
Garlands of jasmine and pearls fell from those women
2.4.8.103
tapato romaśasyaiva taddṛṣṭvā kupito muniḥ ..
upon Romaśa while he was practising austerity. Seeing that, the sage was angered.
2.4.8.104
yoṣitāṃ nā'parādhoyaṃ yāsāṃ vai parataṃtratā .. 49 ..
‘This is not the fault of the women, who are indeed dependent upon others;
2.4.8.105
ayameva durācāraḥ śāpārha iti cā'bravīt ..
this wicked-mannered one alone deserves a curse,’ he said.
2.4.8.106
tvaṃ brahmarākṣaso bhūtvā vaṭavṛkṣe careti mām .. 2.4.8.50 ..
‘Having become a brahmarākṣasa, dwell in a banyan tree,’ [he said] to me.
2.4.8.107
prasādito mayā so'tha viśāpamapi dattavān ..
Propitiated then by me, he also granted an end to the curse:
2.4.8.108
tulasīpatramāhātmyaṃ viṣṇornāma tathā dvijāt .. ..51..
‘When you hear from a twice-born the māhātmya of the tulasī leaf
2.4.8.109
yadā śṛṇoṣi sadyastvaṃ vimuktiṃ yāsyase parām..
and the name of Viṣṇu, you will immediately attain supreme liberation.’
2.4.8.110
iti śaptastu muninā cirakālaṃ suduḥkhitaḥ .. 52 ..
Thus cursed by the sage, extremely sorrowful for a long time,
2.4.8.111
vasāmyatra vaṭe daivādbhavaddarśanato dhruvam ..
I was dwelling here in the banyan tree. By fate, surely through the sight of you,
2.4.8.112
muktirjātā vipraśāpāddvitīyasya kathāṃ śṛṇu .. 53 ..
liberation from the brahmin’s curse has occurred. Listen to the story of the second one.
2.4.8.113
ayaṃ munivaraḥ pūrvaṃ guruśuśrūṣaṇe rataḥ ..
Formerly, this best of sages was devoted to serving his guru.
2.4.8.114
gurorājñāmanādṛtya brahmarākṣasatāṃ gataḥ .. ..54 ..
Having disregarded the command of his guru, he attained the state of a brahmarākṣasa.”
2.4.8.115
yuṣmatprasādādadhunā brahmaśāpādvimocitaḥ ..
"Now, by your favor, he is freed from the curse of the brahmin;
2.4.8.116
tīrthayātrāphalaṃ caiva yuvābhyāmiha sādhitam ..55..
and the fruit of a pilgrimage to sacred fords has indeed been accomplished here by you two.
2.4.8.117
uttarottarapuṇyāni vardhaṃte ca dinedine ..
May increasingly higher merits increase day by day."
2.4.8.118
ityuktvā tau munivarau praṇamya ca punaḥpunaḥ .. 56 ..
Having said this and bowed repeatedly to those two excellent sages,
2.4.8.119
tāvanujñāpya tau dhāma jagmatuḥ parayā mudā ..
having taken leave of them, those two went to their abode with supreme joy.
2.4.8.120
tatastau tīrthayātrārthaṃ paramau munipuṃgavau .. .. 57 ..
Then those two foremost of sages, for the sake of a pilgrimage to sacred fords,
2.4.8.121
śaṃsaṃtau tulasīṃ puṇyāṃ jagmaturmunipuṃgava ..
praising the holy tulasī, departed, O foremost of sages.
2.4.8.122
evaṃ nārada māhātmyaṃ tulasyāḥ ko nu varṇayet .. 58 ..
Thus, O Nārada, who indeed can describe the māhātmya of tulasī?
2.4.8.123
tasmānnārada māse'sminkārtike harituṣṭide ..
Therefore, O Nārada, in this month of Kārtika which delights Hari,
2.4.8.124
kartavyā tulasīpūjā nā'tra kāryā vicāraṇā .. 59 ..
the worship of tulasī must be performed; no hesitation should be made here.
2.4.8.125
evamaṃga vratānyeva proktāni munisattama ..
Thus, my dear, the vows have been proclaimed, O best of sages;
2.4.8.126
upāṃgāni pravakṣyāmi vālakhilyoditāni ca .. 2.4.8.60 ..
I shall explain the auxiliary rites as proclaimed by the Vālakhilyas.
2.4.8.127
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe kārtikamāsamāhātmye tulasīmāhātmyavarṇanaṃ nāmā'ṣṭamo'dhyāyaḥ ..8..
Thus ends the eighth chapter, titled 'Description of the Māhātmya of Tulasī', in the Kārtikamāsamāhātmya in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa in eighty-one thousand verses.
