> On this matter there is a well-known story in the Sanatkumārasaṃhitā:
> In ancient times there was an Ābhīra named Hṛṣīkeśa, a keeper of eight thousand cows. A daughter named Ekāṅgī was born to him. In the absence of a son, he performed extensive charitable deeds and religious acts for the sake of obtaining a son, and by means of that a son was born. Then his priest, named Dundubhi, who was one-eyed and greedy, came there and, out of avarice, untruthfully said: "He was born under the Mūla asterism." Then the frightened father said to his daughter: "O Ekāṅgī, 'Quickly take this boy, put ghee and honey in his mouth, / and swiftly cast him into the Gaṅgā for the increase of our happiness.'" Then Ekāṅgī, taking him out of compassion, placed him in the hollow of a great tree. "Coming repeatedly by day and by night, / nursing him with milk, she would return again to her own home. / In merely a year, that boy was able to speak sweet words, / and Ekāṅgī too became a maiden whose body was possessed by youth." One day the priest Dundubhi propositioned Ekāṅgī with lustful intent. Then she rebuked him. Out of hatred because of that, Dundubhi said to her father: "O Hṛṣīkeśa, I saw this daughter of yours sporting with Yavanas. A boy was born from a Yavana and he has been placed in the hollow of a tree. Go and look! Alas, your lineage is ruined; casting her out is indeed proper, otherwise there will be excommunication." Having heard this, Hṛṣīkeśa, in the manner told by the priest, bound Ekāṅgī and her \[foster-\]son to the back of a bull and abandoned them in the forest. By destiny that bull, taking her, went to Haridvāra, and the bondage became loosened. Then Ekāṅgī built a hut there, sold grass, and with that money maintained the boy and the bull. When the month of Kārtika arrived, people came from various countries for ritual ablution. Knowing her to be a cowherdess, they gave her cows brought for donation to protect. She also undertook great service to the cows. Then, together with the Vaiṣṇavas, she performed cow-worship on the twelfth day. Thus she did for three years. There, by destiny, Hṛṣīkeśa came together with the priest Dundubhi. Seeing his own daughter there, being utterly astonished, and having learned the true events from her, he arranged her marriage. And Dundubhi was condemned, and she too uttered a curse: "From this day forth, may those who place trust in a one-eyed man certainly go to destruction!" Having thus cursed him, giving the boy to her father and instructing \[him\] in the cow-vow, she departed herself with her husband. .. 14 ..
