that kingdom should be considered Vaikuṇṭha, devoid of sin.
2.5.11.55
cakṣurhīnaṃ yathā dehaṃ patihīnā yathā striyaḥ ..
Just as a body without eyes, just as women without a husband,
2.5.11.56
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 26 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.57
yathā putro mahīpāla mātāpitrorapoṣakaḥ ..
Just as a son, O ruler of the earth, who does not support his mother and father,
2.5.11.58
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 27 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.59
dānahīno yathā rājā brāhmaṇo rasavikrayī ..
Just as a king without generosity, [or] a brahmin selling juices,
2.5.11.60
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 28 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.

2.5.11.63
pratigrahārthaṃ vedādi dravyārthaṃ sukṛtaṃ yathā ..
Just as the Veda [studied] for the sake of monetary gifts, [or] good deeds [done] for the sake of wealth,
2.5.11.64
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 2.5.11.30 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.65
darbhahīnā yathā saṃdhyā yathā śrāddhamadakṣiṇam ..
Just as the twilight worship without darbha grass, just as an ancestral rite without a priestly gift,
2.5.11.66
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 31 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.67
saśikhaśca yathā śūdrā kapilākṣīrapāyakaḥ ..
Just as a Śūdra with a topknot, and a drinker of a brown cow’s milk,
2.5.11.68
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 32 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.69
śūdraśca brāhmaṇīgāmī hemaghno dharmadūṣakaḥ ..
And a Śūdra who approaches a brahmin woman, a thief of gold, a corruptor of dharma—
2.5.11.70
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 33 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.71
harisūryādivṛkṣāṇāṃ yathā chedo narottama ..
Just as the cutting down of trees sacred to Hari, Sūrya, and others, O best among men,
2.5.11.72
dvādaśī daśamī yuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 34 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.73
yathā''hutirmaṃtrahīnā mṛtavatsāpayo yathā ..
Just as an oblation devoid of mantra, just as the milk of a cow whose calf has died,
2.5.11.74
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 35 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.75
sakeśā vidhavā yadvadvrataṃ snānavivarjitam ..
Just as a widow with hair, [or] a vow devoid of ritual ablution,
2.5.11.76
dvādaśī daśamīyuktā tathā rāṣṭramavaiṣṇavam .. 36 ..
and [just as] a Dvādaśī combined with a Daśamī, so is a kingdom that is not devoted to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.77
sa rājā procyate sadbhiryo bhakto madhusūdane ..
He is proclaimed a king by the virtuous, who is devoted to Madhusūdana.
2.5.11.78
tadrāṣṭraṃ vardhate nityaṃ sukhī bhavati saprajaḥ .. 37 ..
His kingdom constantly prospers, and he is happy along with his subjects.
2.5.11.79
dṛṣṭirme saphalā rājanyanmayā tvaṃ nirīkṣitaḥ ..
My sight has borne fruit, O king, in that you have been seen by me.
2.5.11.80
adya me saphalā vāṇī jalpate yā tvayā saha .. 38 ..
Today my voice has borne fruit, in that it converses with you.
2.5.11.81
dūrameva hi gaṃtavyaṃ śrūyate yatra vaiṣṇavaḥ ..
One should indeed travel far wherever a devotee of Viṣṇu is heard of.
2.5.11.82
darśanāttu bhavetpuṇyaṃ tīrthasnānasamudbhavam .. 39 ..
For by their darśana arises the merit born of ritual ablution at a sacred ford.
2.5.11.83
sa tvaṃ rājanmayā dṛṣṭo viṣṇubhaktirataḥ śuciḥ ..
Such a one are you, O king, seen by me: pure, devoted to devotion to Viṣṇu.
2.5.11.84
svasti te'stu gamiṣyāmi sukhī bhava narādhipa .. 2.5.11.40 ..
May it be well with you; I shall depart. Be happy, O ruler of men!
2.5.11.85
etasminnaṃtare rājñyā kāṃtimatyā namaskṛtaḥ ..
At this moment, greeted with obeisance by Queen Kāntimatī,
2.5.11.86
bhāradvājo muniśreṣṭhaḥ pravaraḥ sarvayoginām .. 41 ..
Bhāradvāja, the best of sages, the foremost among all yogins, [spoke]:
2.5.11.87
avaidhavyaṃ varārohe bhaktā bhava svabharttari ..
“May you be free from widowhood, O fair-waisted one! Be devoted to your husband.
2.5.11.88
niścalā keśave bhaktiḥ sadā bhavatu te śubhe .. 42 ..
May unwavering devotion to Keśava always be yours, O auspicious woman!”
2.5.11.89
etasminnaṃtare rājā bhāradvājaṃ mahāmunim ..
In this meantime, the king to the great sage Bhāradvāja
2.5.11.90
uvāca prīṇayanvācā meghanādagabhīrayā .. 43 ..
spoke, pleasing him with a voice deep as the roar of a thundercloud:
2.5.11.91
.. rājovāca .. ..
The king said:
2.5.11.92
vipulā me kathaṃ lakṣmīḥ kiṃ kṛtaṃ pūrvajanmani ..
“How has my great fortune arisen? What was done in a previous birth?
2.5.11.93
sarvaṃ brūhi muniśreṣṭha kṛpā yadi mamopari .. 44 ..
Tell everything, O best of sages, if you have compassion upon me!
2.5.11.94
etanmayā kathaṃ prāptaṃ rājyaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ..
How was this kingdom attained by me, its thorns destroyed?
2.5.11.95
putro vai guṇavāñcchreṣṭhaḥ priyā ca sumanoharā .. 45 ..
A son who is virtuous and noble, and a beloved wife most captivating,
2.5.11.96
maccittā madgataprāṇā ciṃtayantī janārdanam ..
whose mind is fixed on me, whose life is dedicated to me, and who meditates on Janārdana?
2.5.11.97
ko'haṃ mune kathaṃ caiṣā kaśca dharmo mayā kṛtaḥ .. 46 ..
Who was I, O sage? And how [was she born]? And what dharma was performed by me?
2.5.11.98
kiṃ cā'nayā'pi cārvaṃgyā mama patnyā kṛtaṃ mune ..
And what was done by this wife of mine, of lovely limbs, O sage?
2.5.11.99
kena puṇyena me lakṣmīrmṛtyuloke sudurlabhā .. 47 ..
By what merit is this fortune mine, so hard to attain in the mortal world,
2.5.11.100
aśeṣā bhūmipālā vai vartaṃte yasya me vaśe ..
where all the rulers of the earth indeed remain under my control,
2.5.11.101
vikramaṃ cā'pratihataṃ śarīrārogyatā tathā .. 48 ..
and [where I have] unhindered valour and bodily health?
2.5.11.102
mamā'pi vipulaṃ tejo na kaścitsahate mune ..
Moreover, no one can withstand my vast splendour, O sage.
2.5.11.103
icchāmyadya pratijñātuṃ yathā ceyamaniṃditā .. 49 ..
Today I wish to know fully about it, and how this blameless woman [became so].
2.5.11.104
mayā'pi sukṛtaṃ vipra kiṃ kṛtaṃ pūrvajanmani ..
What good deed was done by me as well, O brahmin, in a previous birth?”
2.5.11.105
iti pṛṣṭo nareṃdreṇa pūrvajanmaviceṣṭitam .. 2.5.11.50 ..
Thus questioned by the king concerning the deeds of the previous birth,
2.5.11.106
svapatnyāśceṣṭitaṃ caiva saṃpadāṃ caiva kāraṇam ..
and the deeds of his wife, and the cause of their fortunes,
2.5.11.107
yogotthaṃ suciraṃ kālaṃ tathāviṃdata mānase .. 51 ..
he perceived [it all] in his mind for a long time, arising through yoga.
2.5.11.108
vijñātametannṛpate pūrvajanmaviceṣṭitam ..
"This conduct in a past birth is known, O king,
2.5.11.109
tava patnyāśca rājarṣe śṛṇuṣva kathayāmyaham .. 52 ..
and that of your wife, O royal sage; listen as I narrate it." // 52
2.5.11.110
..bhāradvāja uvāca .. ..
Bhāradvāja said:
2.5.11.111
śṛṇu bhūpāla sakalaṃ yasyedaṃ karmaṇaḥ phalam ..
"Listen, O protector of the earth, to everything whose fruit this action is:
2.5.11.112
tvamāsīḥ śūdrajātīyo jīvahiṃsāparāyaṇaḥ .. 53 ..
You were born of the Śūdra class, devoted to harming living beings, // 53
2.5.11.113
nāstiko duṣṭacāritraḥ paradārapradharṣakaḥ ..
an atheist, of wicked conduct, a violator of other men's wives,
2.5.11.114
kṛtaghno durvinītaśca suṣṭhvācāravivarjitaḥ .. 54 ..
ungrateful, undisciplined, and completely devoid of good conduct. // 54
2.5.11.115
iyaṃ yā bhavato bhāryā pūrvamapyāyatekṣaṇā ..
This wide-eyed woman who is your wife was also yours before:
2.5.11.116
karmaṇā manasā vācā nānyadasyāstvayā vinā .. .. 55 ..
in deed, thought, and word, she knew no other than you. // 55
2.5.11.117
pativratā mahābhāgā bhajamānā nirantaram ..
Devoted to her husband, highly fortunate, serving [you] constantly,
2.5.11.118
bhāvaṃ na kurute duṣṭaṃ tavopari tathā sati .. 56 ..
she harbored no evil feeling towards you, though you were such. // 56
2.5.11.119
sakhibhistvaṃ parityakto bandhubhiḥ pāpakarmakṛt ..
You, an evildoer, were abandoned by your friends and kinsmen,
2.5.11.120
kṣayaṃ jagāma cā'rtho yaḥ sañcitastava pūrvajaiḥ .. 57 ..
and the wealth that had been accumulated by your ancestors went to ruin. // 57
2.5.11.121
naṣṭe dravye phalā''kāṃkṣī tvamāsīrjagatīpate ..
When your wealth was lost, O ruler of the earth, you desired livelihood;
2.5.11.122
pūrvakarmavipākena kṛṣiśca viphalā gatā .. .. 58 ..
through the ripening of past deeds, even your agriculture failed. // 58
2.5.11.123
tato vitte parikṣīṇe parityaktaśca bāṃdhavaiḥ ..
Then, with your wealth completely exhausted, abandoned by your relatives,
2.5.11.124
kṣīyamāṇā'pi sādhvīyamatyajattvāṃ na bhāminī .. 59 ..
this virtuous and spirited woman, though wasting away, did not abandon you. // 59
2.5.11.125
tvaṃ bhagnaḥ sarvakāmebhyo gatavānnirjane vane ..
Frustrated in all your desires, you went into a deserted forest,
2.5.11.126
hatvā jīvānanekāṃśca cakārātmavipoṣaṇam ..2.5.11.60 ..
and, killing many living beings, supported yourself. // 60
2.5.11.127
evaṃ pravṛttasya tava saha patnyā tadā nṛpa ..
As you were thus engaged together with your wife, O king,
2.5.11.128
gatāni bahuvarṣāṇi pāpavṛttyā mahītale..61..
many years passed on the surface of the earth through this sinful livelihood. // 61
2.5.11.129
anyasminvāsare rājanmārgabhraṣṭo mahāmuniḥ ..
On another day, O king, a great sage strayed from the path;
2.5.11.130
na diśaṃ vidiśaṃ vetti devaśarmā dvijottamaḥ .. 62 ..
Devaśarman, the best of twice-born, did not know cardinal direction or intermediate direction. // 62
2.5.11.131
kṣuttṛṣāpīḍito'tyarthaṃ madhyāhnagadivākare ..
Severely afflicted with hunger and thirst, when the sun had reached midday,
2.5.11.132
patito vanamadhye tu mārgabhraṣṭo mahīpate .. 63 ..
he fell in the middle of the forest, having lost his way, O ruler of the earth. // 63
2.5.11.133
dayā jātā ca te bhūpa dṛṣṭvā duḥkhena pīḍitam ..
Compassion arose in you, O king, seeing him afflicted with distress;
2.5.11.134
brāhmaṇaṃ vṛddhamajñātaṃ gṛhītvā tu kareṇa vai .. 64 ..
taking that unknown, elderly brahmin by the hand, // 64
2.5.11.135
utthāpya patitaṃ bhūmau tvayoktaṃ hi tadā nṛpa ..
and lifting him as he lay fallen on the ground, you indeed said then, O king:
2.5.11.136
prasādaṃ kuru viprarṣa āgaccha tvaṃ mamā''śramam .. 65 ..
'Grant me your favor, O brahmin seer; come to my hermitage! // 65
2.5.11.137
jalapūrṇaṃ taḍāgaṃ ca padminīkhaṇḍamaṇḍitam ..
[There is] a pond full of water, adorned with clusters of lotuses,
2.5.11.138
vṛkṣairmanoharairyuktaṃ phalaiḥ puṣpairmanoramaiḥ .. 66 ..
endowed with charming trees with delightful fruits and flowers. // 66
2.5.11.139
snātvā suśītale toye kṛtvā karma ca naityakam ..
Having bathed in the very cool water and performed your daily rites,
2.5.11.140
kuru vipra phalāhāraṃ piba vāri suśītalam .. 67 ..
partake of fruits, O brahmin, and drink the very cool water! // 67
2.5.11.141
