2.5.15.1
.. śrībhagavānuvāca .. ..
The Blessed Lord said:
2.5.15.2
ye tvayā vai kṛtāḥ praśnāḥ pūrvaṃ praśnavidāṃ vara ..
The questions that were asked by you before, O best of questioners,
2.5.15.3
tānvarṇayiṣye kramaśo niśāmaya suniścitam ..1 ..
I shall describe them in due order; listen attentively with certainty.
2.5.15.4
sahomāse ca devo vai kīrtiyukto hi keśavaḥ ..
In the month of Sahas, the deity is indeed Keśava, endowed with fame (Kīrti).
2.5.15.5
tasya pūjā prakartavyā yathāpūrvaṃ prabhāṣitam .. 2 ..
Worship of him should be performed as previously declared.
2.5.15.6
brāhmaṇaṃ keśavaṃ smṛtvā tatpatnīṃ kīrtimeva ca ..
Contemplating the brahmin as Keśava and his wife as Kīrti,
2.5.15.7
daṃpatī vidhivatpūjyau vastrābharaṇadhenubhiḥ .. 3 ..
the married couple should be worshipped according to rule with clothes, ornaments, and cows.
2.5.15.8
dampatī pūjitau vatsa pūjito'haṃ na saṃśayaḥ..
When the couple is worshipped, my child, I am worshipped without a doubt.
2.5.15.9
tasmādavaśyaṃ saṃpūjyau daṃpatī mama tuṣṭidau ..4..
Therefore, the married couple, who bring me satisfaction, must certainly be worshipped.
2.5.15.10
dānaṃ ca vividhaṃ kāryaṃ mama tuṣṭikaraṃ param ..
And gifts of various kinds should be given, which cause great satisfaction to me:
2.5.15.11
godānaṃ bhūmidānaṃ ca svarṇadānaṃ viśeṣataḥ ..5..
the gift of a cow, the gift of land, and especially the gift of gold,
2.5.15.12
vastradānaṃ tathā śayyā tathā'laṃkaraṇāni ca ..
as well as the gift of garments, and beds, and ornaments;
2.5.15.13
sadmadānaṃ prakartavyaṃ mama santoṣakārakam .. 6 ..
the gift of a house should be made, bringing joy to me.
2.5.15.14
sarveṣāmeva dānānāṃ viśeṣaṃ ca trikaṃ smṛtam ..
Among all gifts, a triad is traditionally considered distinguished:
2.5.15.15
vasundharā tathā dhenurvidyādānaṃ tathaiva ca ..7..
the earth, a cow, and likewise the gift of knowledge.
2.5.15.16
datte dānatrike vatsa bhavetprītirmamā'tulā ..
When that triad of gifts is given, my child, my delight is unequaled.
2.5.15.17
tasmānnaraistu kartavyaṃ sahomāse trikaṃ śubham .. 8 ..
Therefore, people should perform that auspicious triad in the month of Sahas.
2.5.15.18
snānasya ca vidhiḥ samyakpuraivokto mayā'nagha ..
The procedure for the ritual ablution was already properly stated by me earlier, O sinless one.
2.5.15.19
pūjāsnānaṃ ca dānaṃ ca vidhireṣa na saṃśayaḥ .. 9 ..
Worship, ritual ablution, and giving gifts—this is the rule, beyond doubt.
2.5.15.20
mārgaśīrṣaṃ samagraṃ tu ekabhaktena yaḥ kṣipet ..
Whoever spends the entire month of Mārgaśīrṣa eating only one meal a day,
2.5.15.21
bhojayedyo dvijānbhaktyā sa mucyedvyādhikilviṣaiḥ..2.5.15.10..
and who feeds the twice-born with devotion, is freed from diseases and sins.
2.5.15.22
kṛṣibhāgī bahudhano bahudhānyaśca jāyate ..
He becomes a sharecropper with great wealth and abundant grain.
2.5.15.23
kimatra bahunoktena śṛṇu guhyaṃ para mama .. 11 ..
What is the use of saying much here? Hear my supreme secret:
2.5.15.24
hutabhugbrāhmaṇaścaiva vadanaṃ mama mānada ..
The fire and the brahmin are both my mouth, O giver of honor.
2.5.15.25
brāhmaṇākhyaṃ mukhaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ na tathā havyavāhanaḥ .. 12 ..
The mouth called 'brahmin' is the superior one; the carrier of oblations is not like it.
2.5.15.26
brāhmaṇākhye mukhe putra hutaṃ koṭiguṇaṃ bhavet ..
What is offered into the mouth called 'brahmin', O son, becomes ten million times greater.
2.5.15.27
agnyākhyaṃ brāhmaṇādhīnaṃ svataṃtrā brāhmaṇāḥ kila .. 13 ..
The one called 'fire' is dependent on brahmins, but brahmins are truly independent.
2.5.15.28
saśarkaraṃ ghṛtayutaṃ pāyasaṃ śaśisannibham ..
Milk-rice resembling the moon, prepared with sugar and mixed with clarified butter,
2.5.15.29
hotavyaṃ brāhmaṇamukhe mama tuṣṭikaraṃ suta .. 14 ..
should be offered into the mouth of a brahmin, causing satisfaction to me, O son.
2.5.15.30
śubhamaṃḍalamodakakokarasaṃ suta phenikayā ghṛtapūrayutam ..
Auspicious round sweet dumplings, sweet drinks, together with phenikā-pastries and ghṛtapūra-cakes, O son,
2.5.15.31
yaja vipramukhe mama tuṣṭikaraṃ yadi cecchasi dārasutādisukham ..15..
offer into the mouth of a brahmin, causing satisfaction to me, if you desire the happiness of a wife, sons, and the like.
2.5.15.32
kumudena samaprabhasaurabhadaṃ śubhabhaktayutaṃ tvatha mudgayutam ..
Having a luster and fragrance like a white lotus, mixed with good cooked rice, or mixed with mung beans,
2.5.15.33
surabhīkṛtapuṣkalasarpisamaṃ kuru vipramukhe havanaṃ hi sahe .. 16 ..
and fragrant, accompanied by an abundance of clarified butter—make this offering into the mouth of a brahmin in the month of Sahas.
2.5.15.34
payasā saha sarpiṣi ca kvathitaṃ bahukhārikacāraphalaiḥ sitayā ..
Boiled in milk with clarified butter, with abundant dried dates and cāra-fruits, with sugar,
2.5.15.35
saha karpuranāriphalena samaṃ yutasīkarakaṃ suta śubhrakaram .. 17 ..
together with camphor, coconuts, mixed with refined sugar crystals, making it white, O son,
2.5.15.36
vyaṃjanāni ca śubhrāṇi manojñāni priyāṇi ca ..
and savory dishes, bright, appealing, and well-liked,
2.5.15.37
karttavyāni sahomāse brāhmaṇārthe caturmukha .. 18 ..
should be prepared for the sake of brahmins in the month of Sahas, O four-faced one.
2.5.15.38
priyā śikhariṇī kāryā cānyatteṣāṃ priyaṃ ca yat ..
Beloved śikhariṇī should be prepared, and whatever else is pleasing to them.
2.5.15.39
kṛtvaivaṃ bhojayedviprāñchraddhayā parayā suta .. 19 ..
Having prepared all this, one should feed the twice-born with supreme faith, O son.
2.5.15.40
rasāsvādanapūrvaṃ hi bhuñjate vai yathāyathā ..
In whatever manner they eat, truly relishing the flavors,
2.5.15.41
tathātathā mama prītirjāyate bhuvi durlabhā ..2.5.15.20..
in that same manner my delight arises, rarely found on earth.
2.5.15.42
tasmāttattattathā kāryaṃ yathā tuṣyaṃti brāhmaṇāḥ ..
Therefore, that should be done in such a way that the brahmins are satisfied.
2.5.15.43
tuṣṭaistaiścāpyahaṃ tuṣṭo bhavāmīha na saṃśayaḥ .. 21 ..
When they are pleased, I too become pleased in this world; of this there is no doubt.
2.5.15.44
śraddhatsva tvaṃ caturvaktra na te mithyā bravīmyaham ..
Have faith, O four-faced one; I do not speak falsely to you.
2.5.15.45
etadguhyaṃ mayā proktaṃ śreyorthaṃ tava mānada .. 22 ..
This secret has been spoken by me for your welfare, O respectful one.
2.5.15.46
ākrośayaṃti yadi te athavā praharaṃti cet ..
Even if they revile you or strike you,
2.5.15.47
tathāpi te namasyā vai mama prītyā hi mānada .. 23 ..
they must nevertheless be bowed to, O respectful one, out of love for me.
2.5.15.48
evaṃ kāryaṃ sadā putra mārgaśīrṣe viśeṣataḥ ..
This should always be done, O son, especially in Mārgaśīrṣa.
2.5.15.49
yaduktaṃ bhavatā brahmanbhoktavyaṃ kiṃ śṛṇuṣva tat .. 24 ..
As to what was asked by you, O Brahmā, regarding what should be eaten, hear that:
2.5.15.50
bhoktavyaṃ mama cocchiṣṭaṃ mama bhaktiparāyaṇaiḥ ..
The remains of my food should be eaten by those wholly devoted to my bhakti;
2.5.15.51
pavitrakaraṇaṃ putra pāpināmapi muktidam ..25..
it brings purification, O son, and grants liberation even to sinners.
2.5.15.52
mamāśanasya śeṣaṃ ca yo bhunakti dinedine ..
He who day by day eats the remainder of my meal,
2.5.15.53
sikthesikthe bhavetpuṇyaṃ cāṃdrāyaṇaśatodbhavam .. 26 ..
for every morsel of boiled rice he gains the merit arising from a hundred cāndrāyaṇa penances.
2.5.15.54
avaśiṣṭaṃ tathocchiṣṭaṃ bhaktānāṃ bhojanadvayam ..
What remains and what is left over: these are the two foods for devotees.
2.5.15.55
nā'nyadvai bhojanaṃ teṣāṃ bhuktvā cāṃdrāyaṇaṃ caret .. 27 ..
They have no other food; having eaten [anything else], one should perform a cāndrāyaṇa penance.
2.5.15.56
anarpayitvā yo bhuṃkte annapānādikaṃ ca yat ..
Whatever food, drink, and the like one consumes without having offered it,
2.5.15.57
śvānaviṣṭhāsamaṃ cānnaṃ pānaṃ ca madirāsamam .. .. 28..
that food is equal to dog feces, and that drink is equal to wine.
2.5.15.58
tasmānmāmarpayetputra annapānādi cauṣadham ..
Therefore, O son, one should offer to me food, drink, and medicine;
2.5.15.59
bhakṣayetparayā bhaktyā aśuceḥ śucikārakam .. 29 ..
one should consume it with supreme devotion; it makes pure the impure.
2.5.15.60
tīrthayajñādikaphalaṃ kalidoṣavināśanam ..
Yielding the fruit of sacred fords, sacrifices, and the like, destroying the evils of the Kali age,
2.5.15.61
mamocchiṣṭaṃ sugatidamapi duṣkṛtakarmaṇām .. 2.5.15.30 ..
the remains of my food grant a good destination even to those of evil deeds.
2.5.15.62
anyeṣāṃ daivatānāṃ ca na gṛhṇīyācca bhakṣitam ..
One should not take what has been eaten by other deities;
2.5.15.63
abhaktānāṃ ca pakvānnaṃ bhuktvā ca narakaṃ vrajet .. 31 ..
and by eating the cooked food of non-devotees, one goes to hell.
2.5.15.64
vaktavyameva yatproktaṃ tacchṛṇuṣva samāhitaḥ ..
Listen attentively to what is to be spoken, as mentioned [before];
2.5.15.65
kathayiṣye tava prītyā api guhyataraṃ mama .. 32 ..
out of love for you, I will tell even my more secret [teaching].
2.5.15.66
mama nāma pravaktavyaṃ sahe caiva viśeṣataḥ ..
My name is to be spoken, especially in the month of Saha;
2.5.15.67
kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti vaktavyaṃ mama prītikaraṃ param ..33..
one should recite 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa', which brings me supreme delight.
2.5.15.68
pratijñaiṣā ca me putra na jānaṃti surāsurāḥ ..
And this is my vow, O son, which gods and asuras do not know:
2.5.15.69
manasā karmaṇā vācā yo me śaraṇamāgataḥ .. .. 34 ..
He who has taken refuge in me in mind, deed, and speech,
2.5.15.70
sa hi sarvāmavāpnoti kāmanāmiha laukikīm ..
attains every worldly desire in this world,
2.5.15.71
sarvotkṛṣṭaṃ ca vaikuṇṭhaṃ matpriyāṃ kamalāmapi .. 35 ..
as well as supreme Vaikuṇṭha and even Kamalā, who is dear to me.
2.5.15.72
kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti yo māṃ smarati nityaśaḥ ..
He who constantly remembers me, saying 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa'—
2.5.15.73
jalaṃ bhittvā yathā padmaṃ narakāduddharāmyaham..36..
just as a lotus pierces through the water, so do I lift him up from hell.
2.5.15.74
vinodenā'pi daṃbhena mauḍhyāllobhācchalādapi ..
Even in jest, deceit, delusion, greed, or pretense,
2.5.15.75
yo māṃ bhajatyasau vatsa madbhakto nā'vasīdati .. 37 ..
whoever worships me, dear child, as my devotee, does not perish.
2.5.15.76
ye vai paṭhaṃti kṛṣṇeti maraṇe paryupasthite ..
Those who recite 'Kṛṣṇa' when death is at hand,
2.5.15.77
yadi pāpayutāḥ putra na paśyaṃti yamaṃ kvacit .. 38 ..
even if full of sins, O son, never see Yama.
2.5.15.78
pūrve vayasi pāpāni kṛtānyapi ca kṛtsnaśaḥ ..
Even if sins were committed completely in early life,
2.5.15.79
aṃtakāle ca kṛṣṇeti smṛtvā māmetyasaṃśayam .. 39 ..
by remembering 'Kṛṣṇa' at the moment of death, one comes to me without doubt.
2.5.15.80
namaḥ kṛṣṇāya mahate vivaśo'pi vadedyadi ..
Even if helpless, should one say: 'Obeisance to great Kṛṣṇa,'
2.5.15.81
dhruvaṃ padamavāpnoti maraṇe paryupasthite .. 2.5.15.40 ..
one attains the eternal abode when death is at hand.
2.5.15.82
śrīkṛṣṇeti kṛtoccāraiḥ prāṇairyadi viyujyate ..
If one's vital breaths depart while making the utterance 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa,'
2.5.15.83
dūrasthaḥ paśyati ca taṃ svargataṃ pretanāyakaḥ .. 41 ..
the lord of spirits sees him from afar gone to heaven.
2.5.15.84
śmaśāne yadi rathyāyāṃ kṛṣṇakṛṣṇeti jalpati ..
If in a cremation ground or on a street one repeats 'Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa,'
2.5.15.85
mriyate yadi cetputra māmevaiti na saṃśayaḥ .. 42 ..
and if one dies, O son, one attains me alone, there is no doubt.
2.5.15.86
darśanātmama bhaktānāṃ mṛtyumāpnoti yaḥ kvacit ..
Whoever meets death somewhere on seeing my devotees,
2.5.15.87
vinā matsmaraṇātputra muktimeti sa mānavaḥ .. 43 ..
that mortal goes to liberation even without remembering me, O son.
2.5.15.88
pāpānalasya dīptasya bhayaṃ mā kuru putraka ..
Do not fear the blazing fire of sin, my son;
2.5.15.89
śrīkṛṣṇanāmameghotthaiḥ sicyate nīrabiṃdubhiḥ .. 44 ..
it is extinguished by drops of water rising from the cloud that is the name of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
2.5.15.90
kalikālabhujaṃgasya tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭrasya kiṃ bhayam ..
What fear can there be from the serpent of Kali's age with sharp fangs?
2.5.15.91
śrīkṛṣṇanāmadārūtthavahnidagdhaḥ sa naśyati .. 48 ..
Burned by the fire arising from the firewood of the name of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, it perishes.

there is no remedy other than the remembrance of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
2.5.15.94
prayāge vai yathā gaṃgā śuklatīrthe ca narmadā ..
Just as the Gaṅgā is at Prayāga, and the Narmadā at Śuklatīrtha,
2.5.15.95
sarasvatī kurukṣetre tadvacchrīkṛṣṇakīrtanam ..47..
and Sarasvatī at Kurukṣetra, so is the praise of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
2.5.15.96
bhavāṃbhodhinimagnānāṃ mahāpāpormipātinām ..
For human beings submerged in the ocean of worldly existence, dashed by waves of great sin,

na gatirmānavānāṃ ca śrīkṛṣṇasmaraṇaṃ vinā .. 48 ..
there is no refuge other than the remembrance of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
2.5.15.98
mṛtyukāle'pi martyānāṃ pāpināṃ tadanicchatām ..
Even at the time of death, for sinners who do not desire it,
2.5.15.99
gacchatāṃ nā'sti pātheyaṃ śrīkṛṣṇasmaraṇaṃ vinā .. 49 ..
as they depart, there are no provisions for the journey without the remembrance of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

tatra putra gayā kāśī puṣkaraṃ kurujāṃgalam ..
There, O son, are Gayā, Kāśī, Puṣkara, and Kurujāṅgala,

2.5.15.110
śrīkṛṣṇeti vacaḥ pathyaṃ na tyajedyaḥ kalau naraḥ ..
The mortal in the Kali age who does not abandon the wholesome utterance 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa'—

the disease of sin shall certainly not arise in his mind in the Kali age. // 55
2.5.15.112
śrīkṛṣṇeti prajalpaṃtaṃ dakṣiṇāśāpatirnaram ..
Hearing a man repeating 'Śrī Kṛṣṇa',

2.5.15.122
yukto yadi mahāpāpairagamyāgamanādibhiḥ ..

na sā cetkalikāle yā śrīkṛṣṇaguṇavādinī .. 63 ..
if it is not one that declares the virtues of Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the Kali age. // 63

kurute yā kalau putra śrīkṛṣṇa guṇakīrtanam .. 64 ..
if it performs the chanting of the virtues of Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the Kali age, O son. // 64
2.5.15.130
pāpavallī mukhe tasya jihvārūpeṇa kīrtyate ..
It is declared to be a creeper of sin in the form of a tongue in his mouth,
