2.7.13.17
yasminsaṃgīyate yo hi prīyate puruṣottamaḥ .. 8 ..
In it Puruṣottama is sung, and he is pleased;
2.7.13.18
kathaṃ na yāti ca gatiṃ tasyā'nuṣṭhānata tparaḥ ..
how could one intent upon its observance not attain that goal?

2.7.13.21
tasya viṣṇuḥ prasannātmā sahāye sarvadā sthitaḥ .. 2.7.13.10 ..
Viṣṇu, gracious in mind, stands always to assist him.
2.7.13.22
na tasya bhūpateḥ saure samarthastvaṃ ca śikṣaṇe ..
And you are not capable, O son of Sūrya, of punishing that king.
2.7.13.23
na vāsudevabhaktānāmaśubhaṃ vidyate kvacit ..
For the devotees of Vāsudeva there is nowhere any misfortune;
2.7.13.24
janmamṛtyujarāvyādhi bhayaṃ naivopajāyate .. 11 ..
fear of birth, death, old age, and disease never arises for them.
2.7.13.25
niyogī svāmikāryeṣu yāvacchakti samīhate ..
As long as a servant strives in his master's tasks according to his ability,
2.7.13.26
tāvatā sa kṛtārthaḥ syānnarakānnaiva gacchati .. 12 ..
so far has he fulfilled his purpose; he does not go to hell.
2.7.13.27
kārye śakti viniṣkrānte svāmine ca nivedayet ..

when effort has been made in one's duty, an embodied being incurs no fault.
2.7.13.31
tasmādaśakyakārye'sminna viśocitumarhasi .. 15 ..
Therefore, you ought not to grieve over this impossible task.
2.7.13.32
ityukto brahmaṇā sauriḥ punaratyaṃtakhinnadhīḥ ..
Thus addressed by Brahmā, the son of Sūrya, his mind deeply grieved again,
2.7.13.33
uvāca dīnayā vācā galadvāṣpā''kulekṣaṇaḥ .. 16 ..
spoke with a plaintive voice, his eyes dimmed with flowing tears:
2.7.13.34
prāptaṃ tāta mayā sarvaṃ tvadaṃghribhajanena vai ..
Everything has been obtained by me, O father, through worship of your feet.
2.7.13.35
nā'haṃ yāsye punaḥ kartuṃ niyogaṃ padmasaṃbhava .. 17 ..
I will not go again to carry out my duty, O lotus-born one!
2.7.13.36
praśāsati mahāvīrye bhūpe'sminbhūmimaṇḍale ..
While this king of great valor rules the earthly orb,
2.7.13.37
cālayitvā svadharmāṃśca tamekaṃ bhūpatiṃ vibho ..17..
having caused that single sovereign to deviate from his duties, O Lord,
2.7.13.38
kṛtakṛtyo'smi tanayo gayāyāṃ piṇḍado yathā..
I shall have fulfilled my purpose, like a son offering a funeral cake at Gayā.
2.7.13.39
kṛpālo tadidaṃ kāryaṃ sādhayasva mamāvyayam .. 19 ..
O compassionate one, therefore accomplish this imperishable purpose of mine!
2.7.13.40
vijvarastu tato bhūyaḥ śāsanaṃ te karomyaham ..
Freed from fever [of distress], I will then again execute your command."
2.7.13.41
śrutvā brahmā yamenoktaṃ punaściṃtāparāyaṇaḥ .. .. 2.7.13.20 ..
Hearing what was spoken by Yama, Brahmā was once again overcome with worry.
2.7.13.42
tamuvāca punarbrahmā sāṃtvayanbahudhāpyamum ..
Brahmā spoke to him again, consoling him in many ways:
2.7.13.43
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
2.7.13.44
na nirgrāhyastvayā rājā viṣṇudharmaparāyaṇaḥ .. 21 ..
"You must not restrain this king who is devoted to the righteousness of Viṣṇu.
2.7.13.45
yadi cchalayase kopādgacchāmo hyaṃtikaṃ hareḥ ..
If you act deceitfully out of anger, let us go indeed to the presence of Hari.
2.7.13.46
nivedya sakalaṃ tasmai karma paścāttadīritam .. 22 ..
Having reported the whole matter to him, then whatever is spoken by him [shall be done].
2.7.13.47
sa eva karttā lokasya dharmasya paripālakaḥ ..
He alone is the creator of the world and the protector of righteousness;
2.7.13.48
sa ca daṇḍadharo'smākaṃ śāstā karttā niyāmakaḥ ..23..
he is our bearer of punishment, ruler, creator, and ordainer.
2.7.13.49
na tadukte'sti pratyuktirasmākaṃ vihitā vṛṣa ..
No counter-reply to what is spoken by him is ordained for us, O bull of justice!
2.7.13.50
na rājoktestu pratyuktirdṛśyate kvā'pi bhūtale.. 24 ..
Indeed, no reply to a king’s command is seen anywhere on earth."
2.7.13.51
ityāśvāsya yamaṃ tena sākaṃ kṣīrāṃbudhiṃ yayau ..
Having thus comforted Yama, he went with him to the Ocean of Milk.
2.7.13.52
brahmā tuṣṭāva cinmātraṃ nirguṇaṃ parameśvaram .. 25 ..
Brahmā praised the supreme lord, pure consciousness alone and devoid of attributes,
2.7.13.53
sāṃkhyayogairadvitīyamekaṃ taṃ puruṣottamam ..
the one without a second, the Puruṣottama [attainable] through Sāṃkhya and Yoga.
2.7.13.54
āvirāsīttadā viṣṇurbrahmaṇā saṃstuto hariḥ .. 26 ..
Then Viṣṇu, Hari, praised by Brahmā, manifested himself.
2.7.13.55
praṇāmaṃ cakratustasmai yamo brahmā ca satvaram ..
Yama and Brahmā quickly bowed down to him.
2.7.13.56
tāvuvāca mahāviṣṇurmeghagaṃbhīrayā girā .. .. 27 ..
Mahāviṣṇu spoke to the two of them with a voice deep like a thundercloud:
2.7.13.57
kasmādyuvāmihā''yātau kiṃ duḥkhaṃ danujairabhūt ..
"Why have you two come here? What distress has arisen on account of the Danujas?
2.7.13.58
mlānaṃ yamamukhaṃ kasmātkena vā natakaṃdharaḥ .. 28 ..
Why is the face of Yama faded, or why is his neck bent low?
2.7.13.59
etadvadasva me brahmannityuktaścāha kaṃjajaḥ ..
Tell me this, O Brahmā!" Thus addressed, the lotus-born one said:
2.7.13.60
tvaddāsavarye bhūpāle bhūmiṃ śāsati vai narāḥ .. 29 ..
"While that king, the best among your servants, is ruling the earth, indeed men,
2.7.13.61
vaiśākhadharmaniratā yāṃti te paramavyayam ..
intent upon the observances of the month of Vaiśākha, attain the supreme, imperishable state.
2.7.13.62
tato yamapurī śūnyā tena cā'tīvaduḥkhitaḥ .. 2.7.13.30 ..
Therefore, the city of Yama is desolate, and he is exceedingly distressed on that account.
2.7.13.63
tena yuddhaṃ cakārā'sau haṃtuṃ daṃḍamathā'dade ..
He waged battle against him and took up his rod to slay him;
2.7.13.64
tvaccakreṇa parābhūto yayāvadya mamāntikam .. 31 ..
defeated by your discus, he has come today to my presence.
2.7.13.65
na ca śakto vayaṃ daṃḍaṃ tvadbhaktānāṃ mahātmanām ..
We are not capable of inflicting punishment upon the great-souled ones who are devoted to you.
2.7.13.66
tasmāttvāmeva śaraṇaṃ vayaṃ prāptā mahāvibho .. 32 ..
Therefore we have sought refuge only with you, O mighty Lord!
2.7.13.67
tasmādbhūpaṃ daṃḍayitvā pālayainaṃ yamaṃ svakam ..
Therefore, having punished the king, protect this Yama, your own [servant]."
2.7.13.68
ityuktaḥ prahasanprāha brahmāṇaṃ yamameva ca .. 33 ..
Thus addressed, [Viṣṇu] said with a gentle laugh to Brahmā and Yama:
2.7.13.69
lakṣmīṃ vā'pi parityakṣye prāṇāndehamathā'pi vā ..
"I might abandon even Lakṣmī, my life breaths, or even my body,
2.7.13.70
śrīvatsaṃ kaustubhaṃ mālāṃ vaijayaṃtīmathā'pi vā ..34..
the Śrīvatsa mark, the Kaustubha jewel, or even the garland Vaijayantī;
2.7.13.71
śvetadvīpaṃ ca vaikuṃṭhaṃ kṣīrasāgarameva ca..
Śvetadvīpa, Vaikuṇṭha, and the Ocean of Milk;
2.7.13.72
śeṣaṃ ca garuḍaṃ caiva na bhaktaṃ tyaktumutsahe .. 35 ..
Śeṣa and even Garuḍa—yet I cannot bear to abandon a devotee.
2.7.13.73
vissṛjya sakalānbhogānmadarthe tyaktajīvitān ..
Having given up all pleasures, having surrendered their lives for my sake,
2.7.13.74
madātmakānmahābhāgānkathaṃ tāṃstyaktumutsahe .. 36 ..
possessing their very self in me—how can I bear to abandon those exalted ones?
2.7.13.75
tasmāttvadduḥkhaśamane hyupāyaṃ kalpayāmyaham ..
Therefore, I shall devise an expedient to appease your distress:
2.7.13.76
tasya cāyurmayā dattamayutaṃ bhūpaterbhuvi .. 37 ..
A lifespan of ten thousand years on earth was granted by me to that king.
2.7.13.77
gatānyaṣṭau sahasrāṇi tatredānīṃ narāṃtaka ..
Eight thousand years have passed by now, O destroyer of mortals!
2.7.13.78
āyuḥśeṣe tena nīte matsāyujyaṃ gate'pi ca..38..
When the rest of his lifespan has been spent by him, and he has reached union with me,
2.7.13.79
bhaviṣyati tato rājā veno nāma durātmavān..
there will then be an evil-minded king named Vena.
2.7.13.80
sa luṃpati mahādharmānsarvānetāñchrutīritān ..39..
He will destroy all these great duties taught by the Vedic scriptures.
2.7.13.81
tadā vaiśākhadharmāśca vicchinnā syurna saṃśayaḥ ..
Then the observances of the month of Vaiśākha will be discontinued without a doubt.
2.7.13.82
svakṛtenaiva pāpena veno dagdho bhaviṣyati ..2.7.13.40..
By his very own sin, Vena will be consumed.
2.7.13.83
paścādahaṃ pṛthurbhūtvā punardharmānpravartaye ..
Afterwards, having become Pṛthu, I shall set the sacred duties in motion again.
2.7.13.84
tadā janeṣu prakhyātānvaiśākhoktānkaromyaham ..41..
Then I shall make widely known among people the practices enjoined for Vaiśākha.
2.7.13.85
madbhakto madgataprāṇo yastu vinyastasaṃgrahaḥ ..
He who is devoted to me, whose life is dedicated to me, who has renounced all hoardings—
2.7.13.86
ekaḥ sahasre bhavitā tasya prakhyāpayeddhi tān .. 42 ..
one in a thousand will be such, and to him [the teacher] should proclaim them.
2.7.13.87
kaścideva hi jānātu dharmānetānkṣitau mama ..
Only a rare one on earth will know these duties belonging to me.
2.7.13.88
tataste bhavitā kāryaṃ mā viṣīda narāṃtaka .. 43 ..
Then your purpose will be accomplished; do not despond, O destroyer of mortals!
2.7.13.89
dāpayiṣyāmi te bhāgaṃ māse'sminmādhave'pi ca ..
I will cause your portion to be given, even in this month of Mādhava,
2.7.13.90
naraiḥ sarvaiśca vaiśākhadharmaniṣṭhairmahātmabhiḥ .. 44 ..
by all the great-souled men dedicated to the duties of Vaiśākha,
2.7.13.91
bhūpenā'pi ca kālena khedaṃ śamaya tena ca ..
and by the king in due course; by that, dispel your distress!
2.7.13.92
vīryaśulkaṃ tu te bhāgaṃ śatrorbhuṃkte balādhikāt.. 45 ..
One receives your portion as a tribute of valor from an enemy of superior strength.
2.7.13.93
gṛhṇangṛhṇansvakaṃ bhāgaṃ na bhāgī duḥkhamarhati ..
Accepting his own due share again and again, one entitled to a share does not deserve grief.
2.7.13.94
tvāmuddiśya na kurvaṃti pratyahaṃ ye narā bhuvi ..46..
Those men on earth who do not perform [rites] daily addressing you—
2.7.13.95
snānaṃ cārghyaṃ sodakuṃbhaṃ dadhyannaṃ cāṃtime dine ..
[do not perform] ritual ablution and [offer] an arghya with a water jar, and curd-rice on the final day,
2.7.13.96
vaiśākhe sakalaṃ karma teṣāṃ ca viphalaṃ bhavet .. 47 ..
all their rites in Vaiśākha become fruitless.
2.7.13.97
tasmātkrodhaṃ tyaja nṛpe bhāgade matparāyaṇe ..
Therefore, renounce your anger toward the king who grants shares and is devoted to me.
2.7.13.98
ye ke cā'pi ca kurvaṃti loke te bhāgadā narāḥ .. 48 ..
And whatever people in the world grant those shares,
2.7.13.99
vaiśākhokte mahādharme teṣāṃ vighnaṃ ca mā kuru ..
do not place any obstacle in their great religious duties prescribed for Vaiśākha.
2.7.13.100
māmeva ye yajaṃtyaddhā tvāṃ hitvā dharmapālakam .. 49 ..
Indeed, those who worship only me, abandoning you, the guardian of dharma,
2.7.13.101
madājñayā mahābhāga tadā daṃḍaṃ ca tvaṃ kuru ..
upon them, O highly fortunate one, you may inflict punishment by my command.
2.7.13.102
nṛpādbhāgaṃ dāpayituṃ sunaṃdaṃ preṣayāmi ca ..2.7.13.50 ..
And I shall send Sunanda to cause the king to give your share.
2.7.13.103
macchāsanātsa vai gatvā bhāgaṃ te dāpayiṣyati ..
Having gone by my command, he will surely cause your share to be given to you.”
2.7.13.104
tiṣṭhatyevaṃ yame svasya sannidhau garuḍāsanaḥ .. 51 ..
While Yama thus stood in his presence, he whose seat is Garuḍa,
2.7.13.105
sunandaṃ preṣayāmāsa nṛpaṃ bodhayituṃ vibhuḥ ..
the Lord, sent Sunanda to enlighten the king.
2.7.13.106
so'pi gatvā bodhayitvā pārśvaṃ ca punarāgamat .. 52 ..
He too went, enlightened [the king], and came back to [the Lord's] side.
2.7.13.107
ityāśvāsya yamaṃ viṣṇustatraivāntaradhīyata ..
Having thus comforted Yama, Viṣṇu vanished right there.
2.7.13.108
yamaṃ svayaṃ sāṃtvayitvā samanujñāpya vegataḥ .. 53 ..
Having himself consoled Yama and swiftly granted him leave,
2.7.13.109
ativismayamāpanno yayau dhāma sahānugaiḥ ..
filled with immense wonder, he went to his abode along with his attendants.
2.7.13.110
yamo'pi svapurīṃ prāyātkiṃcitsaṃhṛṣṭamānasaḥ .. 54 ..
Yama also set out for his own city, his mind somewhat delighted.
2.7.13.111
paścādviṣṇornideśena sunandaparibodhitaḥ ..
Afterward, by Viṣṇu's command, instructed by Sunanda,
2.7.13.112
bhāgadāḥ sakalā lokā ye vaiśākhaparāyaṇāḥ .. 55 ..
all the people devoted to Vaiśākha became givers of [Yama's] share.
2.7.13.113
dharmarājaṃ puraskṛtya ye na kurvaṃti mānavāḥ ..
Those mortals who do not act having honored Dharmarāja—
2.7.13.114
teṣāṃ hi svayamādatte puṇyaṃ vaiśākhasaṃbhavam .. 56 ..
he himself takes away their merit arising from Vaiśākha.
2.7.13.115
kuryācca pratyahaṃ snānaṃ dadyādarghyaṃ yamāya vai ..
One should perform ritual ablution daily and indeed offer an arghya to Yama;
2.7.13.116
vaiśākhe sakalaṃ puṇyamanyathā viphalaṃ bhavet .. 57 ..
otherwise, all merit in Vaiśākha becomes fruitless.
2.7.13.117
sodakumbhaṃ ca dadhyannaṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ ca mādhave ..
And on the full moon day in the month of Mādhava, a water jar and curd-rice
2.7.13.118
dharmarājaṃ samuddiśya dātavyaṃ prathamaṃ janaiḥ .. 58 ..
should be given first by people intended for Dharmarāja.
2.7.13.119
paścātpitṝnsamuddiśya gurumuddiśya vai naraḥ ..
Afterward, a man [should give] intended for the ancestors, intended for the guru,
2.7.13.120
madhusūdanamuddiśya paścāddevaṃ janārdanam .. 59 ..
and then intended for Madhusūdana, God Janārdana.
2.7.13.121
śītalodakadadhyannaṃ tāṃbūlaṃ ca sadakṣiṇam ..
Curd-rice with cool water, betel, along with a sacrificial fee,
2.7.13.122
saphalaṃ kāṃsyapātrasthaṃ brāhmaṇāya nivedayet .. 2.7.13.60 ..
and with fruit, placed in a bronze vessel, one should offer to a brahmin.
2.7.13.123
dadyācca pratimāṃ divyāṃ madhusūdanadevatām ..
And one should give a divine image of the deity Madhusūdana;
2.7.13.124
māsadharmapravaktre ca dadyādviprāya sīdate .. 61 ..
and one should give to the proclaimer of the month's religious duties, to an impoverished brahmin.
2.7.13.125
tameva dharmavaktāraṃ pūjayedvibhavaiḥ svakaiḥ ..
One should worship that very speaker of dharma with one's own resources.
2.7.13.126
ityādiṣṭaḥ sunandena tathā rājā cakāra ha .. 62 ..
Thus instructed by Sunanda, the king acted accordingly.
2.7.13.127
sa nītvā cāyuṣaḥ śeṣaṃ bhuktvā bhogānyathepsitān ..
Having spent the remainder of his life and enjoyed desired pleasures,
2.7.13.128
putrapautrādibhiryukto jagāma harimaṃdiram .. 63 ..
accompanied by sons, grandsons, and others, he went to the abode of Hari.
2.7.13.129
vaikuṇṭhasthe nṛpe tasminveno rājā'dhamo'bhavat ..
When that king had gone to Vaikuṇṭha, Vena became a vile king.
2.7.13.130
sarve dharmāśca vaiśākhadharmā api viśeṣataḥ .. 64 ..
All religious duties, and especially the duties of Vaiśākha,
2.7.13.131
durātmanā ca tenaiva luptā eva babhūvire ..
were completely destroyed by that evil-minded one alone;
2.7.13.132
na prakhyātāḥ punarbhūmau bhūriśo mokṣahetavaḥ .. 65 ..
they, the causes of liberation, were no longer widely known on earth.
2.7.13.133
yaḥ kaścinnaiva jānāti vaiśākhoktānimāñcchubhān ..
Scarcely anyone knows these auspicious [duties] taught for Vaiśākha;
2.7.13.134
bahujanmārjite puṇyaparipāka upāgate .. .. 66 ..
only when the ripening of merit accumulated over many births has arrived
2.7.13.135
vaiśākhokteṣu dharmeṣu matirātyantikī bhavet ..
does one's mind become utterly devoted to the duties taught for Vaiśākha.
2.7.13.136
.. maithila uvāca .. ..
The king of Mithilā said:
2.7.13.137
pūrvamanvaṃtarastho hi veno rājā durātmavān .. 67 ..
King Vena, that evil-minded one, belonged to a previous Manvantara,
2.7.13.138
ayaṃ vaivasvatastho hi rājā cekṣvākunaṃdanaḥ ..
whereas this king, the joy of Ikṣvāku, belongs to the Vaivasvata [Manvantara].
2.7.13.139
iti śrutaṃ mayā pūrvamidānīṃ cocyate tvayā .. 68 ..
Thus was it heard by me formerly, yet now it is spoken by you
2.7.13.140
ayaṃ vaikuṇṭhagaḥ paścādveno rājā bhaviṣyati ..
that after this [king] went to Vaikuṇṭha, King Vena will exist.
2.7.13.141
ityetaṃ saṃśayaṃ chiṃdhi śrutadeva mahāmate .. 69 ..
Cut through this doubt, O noble-minded Śrutadeva!
2.7.13.142
.. śrutadeva uvāca .. ..
Śrutadeva said:
2.7.13.143
purāṇeṣu ca vaiṣamyaṃ yugakalpavyavasthayā ..
Discrepancy in the Purāṇas is due to the arrangement of yugas and kalpas;
2.7.13.144
na cāprāmāṇyaśaṃkā te kathāyā vyatyaye kvacit .. 2.7.13.70 ..
you should have no doubt about the authority [of the Purāṇas] when there is an inversion in a story anywhere.
2.7.13.145
gate dainaṃdine kalpe yathaiṣā śāśvatī śubhā ..
When the daily kalpa passed, just as this eternal and auspicious [narrative]
2.7.13.146
mārkaṇḍeyena me proktā sā coktā tava bhūpate .. 71 ..
was spoken to me by Mārkaṇḍeya, it has been told to you, O king.
