vālmīke:pūrvajanmasya kathā
"śrutakīrtiruvāca..
The story of Vālmīki's previous birth.
Śrutakīrti said:
2.7.17.2
vaiśākhadharmānakhilānihāmutra phalapradā..
“All the duties of Vaiśākha yield fruits both in this world and the next;
2.7.17.3
bhūyo'pi śṛṇvataścāsīttṛptirnā'dyāpi mānada..1..
though hearing them repeatedly, no satiety has come even today, O bestower of honor!
2.7.17.4
yatra cākaitavo dharmo yatra viṣṇukathā śubhāḥ..
Where there is genuine dharma, where there are auspicious stories of Viṣṇu,
2.7.17.5
tacchāstraṃ śṛṇvato naiva tṛptiḥ karṇarasāyanam..2..
one who hears that teaching, an elixir for the ears, never feels satiated.
2.7.17.6
pūrvajanmakṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ diṣṭyā pāramupāgatam ..
By good fortune, the merit acquired in a previous life has reached its culmination,
2.7.17.7
ātithyavyapadeśena yadbhavāngṛhamāgataḥ.. 3 ..
since you have arrived at my house under the pretext of hospitality.
2.7.17.8
vaco'mṛtaṃ mukhāṃbhojaniḥsṛtaṃ paramādbhutam..
Having drunk the wonderful nectar of your words flowing from your lotus face,
2.7.17.9
pītvā tṛptaḥ pārameṣṭhyaṃ mokṣaṃ vā ca na kāmaye..4..
I am satisfied, and I do not desire the station of Brahmā or liberation.
2.7.17.10
tasmāttāneva dharmānme bhuktimuktipradāyakān..
Therefore, explain to me again at length those very duties
2.7.17.11
viṣṇuprītikarāndivyānbhūyo vistarato vada..5..
that bestow worldly enjoyment and liberation, pleasing to Viṣṇu, divine.”
2.7.17.12
ityuktastu purā rājñā śrutadevo mahāyaśāḥ..
Thus addressed formerly by the king, the highly renowned Śrutadeva,
2.7.17.13
saṃhṛṣṭā''tmā śubhāndharmānpunarvyāhartumārabhat..6..
delighted in spirit, began to expound the auspicious duties again.
2.7.17.14
"śrutadeva uvāca..
Śrutadeva said:
2.7.17.15
śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi kathāṃ pāpapraṇāśinīm ..
“Listen, O king! I shall tell a tale that destroys sins,
2.7.17.16
vaiśākhadharmaviṣayāṃ bhāvitāṃ munibhirmuhuḥ..7..
concerning the duties of Vaiśākha, repeatedly reflected upon by sages.
2.7.17.17
pampātīre dvijaḥ kaścicchaṃkhonāma mahāyaśāḥ..**
gurau siṃhagate cāgānnadīṃ godāvarīṃ śubhām..8..
On the bank of the Pampā was a twice-born named Śaṅkha, of great renown;
when Jupiter entered Leo, he went to the auspicious Godāvarī river.
2.7.17.18
tīrtvā bhīmarathīṃ puṇyāṃ kāntāre kaṇṭakācale..
Crossing the holy Bhīmarathī, in a wilderness at Kaṇṭakācala,
2.7.17.19
nirjale nirjane ghore vaiśākhe tapakarṣitaḥ..9..
waterless, desolate, and terrible, in the month of Vaiśākha, tormented by the heat,
2.7.17.20
vṛkṣe copaviveśā'sau madhyāhnasamaye dvijaḥ ..
the twice-born sat down beneath a tree at noon.
2.7.17.21
tadā kaściddurācāro vyādhaścāpadharaḥ śaṭhaḥ..2.7.17.10..
Then a certain rogue hunter of vile conduct, carrying a bow,
2.7.17.22
nirghṛṇaḥ*sarvabhūteṣu kālāntaka ivā'paraḥ..
pitiless toward all beings, like another Death, the ender of time,
2.7.17.23
taṃ kuṇḍaladharaṃ vipraṃ dīkṣitaṃ bhāskaropamam..11..
seeing that consecrated brahmin wearing earrings, radiant like the sun,
2.7.17.24
dṛṣṭvā baddhvā sa jagrāha kuṇḍalādikamugradhīḥ..
that fierce-minded man bound him and seized his earrings and other belongings:
2.7.17.25
upānahau cacchatraṃ ca akṣamālāṃ kamaṇḍalum..12..
the two sandals, the umbrella, the rosary, and the water-pot.
2.7.17.26
paścādvisṛjya taṃ vipraṃ gacchetyāha vimūḍhadhīḥ.. 13..
Afterward, letting that brahmin go, the foolish-minded one said, ‘Be off!’
2.7.17.27
tataḥ sa gacchanpathi śarkarā''vile sūryāṃśutapte jalavarjite khare..
Then, as he walked along the path covered with gravel, scorched by the rays of the sun, waterless and rough,
2.7.17.28
santaptapādastṛṇachādite sthale kvaciccacāropavasannūrdhvaretāḥ ..14..
his feet severely burnt, that chaste ascetic walked on, in some places, onto grass-covered ground, pausing repeatedly.
2.7.17.29
sa vai drutaṃ sampatankvāpi tuṣyanhāheti vādī sa jagāma tūrṇam..
Stumbling rapidly, content nowhere, crying out ‘Alas, alas!’, he went along swiftly.
2.7.17.30
dṛṣṭvā muniṃ khidyamānaṃ pṛthivyāṃ madhyaṃ gate pūṣṇi dayā babhūva ..15..
Seeing the sage suffering on the earth when the sun had reached the meridian, compassion arose [in the hunter].
2.7.17.31
vyādhasya dharmavimukhasya ca pāpabuddhestasmai dadāmi sukhadāṃ khalu pādarakṣām..16..
[Thought] the hunter, though averse to dharma and sinful in mind: ‘I will give him the comfort-giving footwear!
2.7.17.32
cauryeṇaiva svadharmeṇa yā gṛhītā vanāntare..
What was taken in the forest by theft alone, by one's own livelihood—
2.7.17.33
tadīyameva tatsarvaṃ vyādhānāṃ dharmanirṇayaḥ..
all that indeed belongs to him: such is the determination of duty for hunters.
2.7.17.34
tasmādupānahau dāsye muhurduḥkhāpanuttaye..17..
Therefore, I will give the two sandals to dispel his constant pain.
2.7.17.35
tena śreyo bhavedyacca tadbhavenmama pāpinaḥ..
Whatever good may arise from that, let it accrue to me, a sinner!
2.7.17.36
jīrṇe copānahau dve ca vartete pādayormama..
Moreover, two worn-out sandals are on my feet;
2.7.17.37
na tābhyāmasti me kṛtyaṃ tasmātte vai dadāmyaham.. ..18..
I have no need of those two; therefore, I shall indeed give them to him.’
2.7.17.38
iti niścitya manasi tūrṇaṃ gatvā dadau ca te..
Having so resolved in his mind, he went quickly and gave them
2.7.17.39
śarkarātaptapādāya dvijavaryāya sīdate ..19..
to that best of twice-born who was suffering with feet scorched by the gravel.
2.7.17.40
upānahau gṛhītvā te nirvṛtiṃ ca parāṃ yayau..
Taking the two sandals, he attained supreme relief;
2.7.17.41
sukhī bhaveti taṃ vyādhamāśīrbhirabhinandya ca.. 2.7.17.20..
and blessing that hunter with blessings, saying ‘Be happy!’, [he said:]
2.7.17.42
nūnaṃ supakvapuṇyo'yaṃ vaiśākhe dattavānamū ..
‘Surely his merit has fully ripened, that he gave these two in Vaiśākha!’
2.7.17.43
vyādhasyāpi ca durbuddheḥ prāyo viṣṇuḥ prasīdati.. 21..*
sarvasyā''ptyā ca bhūyo'pi yatsukhaṃ tadabhūnmama..
even to this hunter of evil mind, Viṣṇu is mostly gracious. / And the joy that has become mine is like that of regaining all that was lost."
2.7.17.44
tato'bhiśrutya tadvākyaṃ kimetaditi vismitaḥ..22..
Then, having heard that statement, astonished, wondering, 'What is this?',
2.7.17.45
vyājahāra punarvipraṃ brahmiṣṭhaṃ brahmavādinam ..
he addressed the brahmin again, most knowledgeable in the Veda and an expounder of Brahman:
2.7.17.46
tvadīyaṃ tu mayā dattaṃ kathaṃ puṇyaṃ bhavenmama..23..
"Yet what belonged to you was given by me; how can there be merit for me?
2.7.17.47
praśaṃsasi ca vaiśākhaṃ haristuṣṭo bhavediti..
And you praise Vaiśākha, saying that Hari will be pleased.
2.7.17.48
etadācakṣva me brahmanko vaiśākhastu ko hariḥ.. 24..
Tell this to me, O brahmin: what is Vaiśākha, and who is Hari?
2.7.17.49
ko dharmaḥ kiṃ phalaṃ tasya śuśrūṣorme dayānidhe..
What is dharma, and what is its fruit, for me who am eager to hear, O treasure of compassion?"
2.7.17.50
iti vyādhavacaḥ śrutvā śaṃkhastuṣṭamanā abhūt..25..
Hearing these words of the hunter, Śaṅkha became pleased in mind.
2.7.17.51
praśaṃsansa ca vaiśākhaṃ punarvismitamānasaḥ ..
Praising Vaiśākha, his mind filled with wonder again:
2.7.17.52
idānīṃ dattavānpādatrāṇe me lubdhakaḥ śaṭhaḥ..26..
"Just now the deceitful hunter gave me foot-coverings.
2.7.17.53
yaddurbuddheśca vaiṣamyaṃ jātaṃ citramaho vata..
Oh, how marvelous that the wickedness of his evil mind has been overturned!
2.7.17.54
sarveṣāmeva dharmāṇāṃ phalaṃ janmāṃtareṣu vai..27..
For the fruit of all dharmas indeed [accrues] in other births,
2.7.17.55
vaiśākhamāsadharmāṇāṃ phalaṃ sadyaḥ kṣaṇe nṛṇām ..
[but] the fruit of the dharmas of the month of Vaiśākha comes instantly in a moment to men.
2.7.17.56
pāpācārasya durbuddhervyādhasyāpi durātmanaḥ..28..
Even of this wicked, evil-minded hunter of sinful conduct,
2.7.17.57
daivādupānahordānātsattvaśuddhirabhūdaho ..
by the gift of shoes through providence, purity of being has arisen—oh!
2.7.17.58
yacca viṣṇoḥ priyaṃ karma yattatsantoṣanirmalam.. 29..
And whatever action is dear to Viṣṇu, which is spotless through his satisfaction,
2.7.17.59
tadeva dharmamityā hurmanvādyā dharmavittamāḥ..
that alone Manu and others who know dharma best call dharma.
2.7.17.60
dharmā mādhavamāsīyāḥ priyā viṣṇoratīva te.. 2.7.17.30..
Those dharmas belonging to the month of Mādhava are exceedingly dear to Viṣṇu.
2.7.17.61
dharmairmādhavamāsīyairyathā tuṣyati keśavaḥ..
As Keśava is pleased by dharmas belonging to the month of Mādhava,
2.7.17.62
na tathā sarvadānaiśca tapobhiśca mahāmakhaiḥ ..31..
he is not so pleased by all gifts, nor by austerities, nor by great sacrifices.
2.7.17.63
nānena sadṛśo dharmaḥ sarvadharmeṣu vidyate ..
No dharma equal to this is found among all dharmas.
2.7.17.64
mā gayāṃ yāṃtu mā gaṃgāṃ mā prayāgaṃ tu puṣkaram ..32..
Let them not go to Gayā, let them not go to the Gaṅgā, let them not go to Prayāga or to Puṣkara;
2.7.17.65
mā kedāraṃ kurukṣetraṃ mā prabhāsaṃ syamantakam ..
let them not go to Kedāra, to Kurukṣetra, to Prabhāsa, or to Syamantaka;
2.7.17.66
mā godā mā ca kṛṣṇāṃ ca mā setuṃ mā marudvṛdham ..33..
let them not go to the Godāvarī, nor to the Kṛṣṇā, nor to the Setu, nor to the Marudvṛdhā.
2.7.17.67
vaiśākhadharmamāhātmyaṃ śaṃsaṃtī ca kathā''pagā..
The river of narrative proclaiming the majesty of the dharma of Vaiśākha—
2.7.17.68
tatra snātasya vai viṣṇuḥ sadyo hṛdyavarudhyate..34..
for one who has bathed therein, Viṣṇu is instantly retained in the heart.
2.7.17.69
māse mādhavasaṃjñe'sminyastvalpenaiva sādhyate ..
He who is attained with very little in this month named after Mādhava
2.7.17.70
na tadbahuvyayairdānairna dharmairvā'pi vai makhaiḥ..35..
is not [attained] by gifts involving great expenditure, nor by dharmas, nor indeed by sacrifices.
2.7.17.71
māso'yaṃ mādhavonāma* vyādha puṇyavivarddhanaḥ ..
This month called Mādhava, O hunter, increases merit.
2.7.17.72
tasminmahyaṃ tvayā datte pāduke tāpanāśane ..36..
In it, you gave me two sandals that remove heat.
2.7.17.73
tena te pūrvakālīnaṃ puṇyaṃ pākamupāgatam..
Because of that, your past merit has reached fruition.
2.7.17.74
tuṣṭastu bhagavānprāyaḥ śreyo vyādhavidhāsyati..37..
The Lord is pleased and will surely grant you the highest good, O hunter.
2.7.17.75
anyathā te kathaṃ bhūyādbuddhiretādṛśī śubhā ..
Otherwise, how could such an auspicious mindset arise in you?"
2.7.17.76
munāvevaṃ bruvāṇe ca mṛtyunā prerito balī ..38..
While the sage was speaking thus, a mighty lion impelled by death,
2.7.17.77
siṃho vyāghravadhārthāya prādravatkrodhavihvalaḥ ..
distraught with rage, rushed forward to kill a tiger.
2.7.17.78
madhye dṛṣṭvā ca mātaṅgaṃ daivāddevena kalpitam .. 39..
Seeing an elephant between them, arranged through providence by the Lord,
2.7.17.79
taṃ haṃtumudyato'gacchatpadākrāṃtaṃ vyavasthitam..
he set out intent on killing it, standing there trampled by its feet.
2.7.17.80
tayoryuddhamabhūdrājansiṃhamātaṃgayorvane.. 2.7.17.40..
A battle took place between the lion and the elephant in the forest, O king.
2.7.17.81
śrāntau yuddhācca viratau nirīkṣantau ca tasthatuḥ ..
Weary from the fight and having ceased, both stood gazing at each other.
2.7.17.82
vyādhamuddiśya yaccoktaṃ muninā ca mahātmanā..41..
And what was spoken by the great-souled sage addressed to the hunter,
2.7.17.83
samastapātakadhvaṃsi daivācchuśruvatuśca tau ..
destroying all sins, the two of them happened to hear through providence.
2.7.17.84
tenaiva māsamāhātmyaśravaṇenāmalāśayau ..42..
By that very hearing of the greatness of the month, their intentions became pure.
2.7.17.85
śāpānmuktau ca tau dehātsadyo muktau divaṃ gatau ..
Freed from the curse and instantly freed from that body, they went to heaven.
2.7.17.86
divyarūpadharau divyau divyagandhānulepanau ..43..
Assuming divine forms, celestial, smeared with divine fragrance and ointments,
2.7.17.87
divyaṃ vimānamārūḍhau divyanārīniṣevitau..
mounted upon a divine aerial chariot, attended by divine women,
2.7.17.88
sadyo'vanatamūrddhānau prāñjalī copatasthatuḥ..44 ..
instantly bowing their heads, they approached with folded hands.
2.7.17.89
munīṃdro dharmavaktā ca vyādhamuddiśya vai pathi ..
The lord of sages, speaker of dharma, who had been speaking to the hunter on the path,
2.7.17.90
tau dṛṣṭvā vismitaḥ prāha kau yuvāmiti niścalaḥ ..45..
seeing the two of them, was astonished and said, remaining still: "Who are you two?
2.7.17.91
duryonau tu kuto janma yuvayorvā kathaṃ mṛtiḥ ..
Whence was your birth in a degraded womb, or how did your death occur,
2.7.17.92
ahetorvipine cā'snmiparasparavadhodyatau ..46..
ready to kill each other in this forest without reason?
2.7.17.93
etatsarvaṃ suvistārya samyagvadata me'naghau..
Tell me all this in full detail, O sinless ones."
2.7.17.94
ityuktau muninā tena vacaḥ pratyūcatuḥ punaḥ..47..
Thus addressed by that sage, the two replied again:
2.7.17.95
mataṃgasya muneḥ putrau dantilaḥ kohalo'paraḥ ..
"We are the two sons of the sage Mataṅga: Dantila and the other, Kohala.
2.7.17.96
śāpadoṣeṇa tau jātau nāmnā dantilakohalau.. 48..
Through the fault of a curse, those two were born by the names Dantila and Kohala,
2.7.17.97
rūpayauvanasaṃpannau sarvavidyāviśāradau..
endowed with beauty and youth, skilled in all fields of knowledge.
2.7.17.98
āvāmuddiśya provāca pitā dharmārthakovidaḥ..49..
Our father, knowledgeable in dharma and its purpose, spoke addressing us:
2.7.17.99
mataṃgonāma brahmarṣiḥ sarvadharmaviduttamaḥ ..
The brahmin seer named Mataṅga, the best of knowers of all dharma:
2.7.17.100
vaiśākhe māsi tanayau madhusūdanavallabhe.. 2.7.17.50..
'In the month of Vaiśākha, dear to the Slayer of Madhu, O sons,
2.7.17.101
prapāṃ kuruta mārge ca janānvījayataṃ kṣaṇam..
set up a water-stall on the road and fan the people for a moment.
2.7.17.102
mārge chāyā vidhattāṃ ca bhūryannaṃ śītalāṃbu ca..51..
Provide shade on the road, abundant food, and cool water.
2.7.17.103
kurutaṃ snānamuṣasi tathaivārcayataṃ vibhum ..
"Perform ritual ablution at dawn, and worship the Lord in the same way;
2.7.17.104
kathāṃ ca śṛṇutaṃ nityaṃ yayā bandho nivartate..52..
and constantly listen to the sacred narrative by which bondage is dispelled."
2.7.17.105
evaṃ ca bahubhirvākyairbodhitāvapi durmatī ..
Even though thus instructed with many words, the two of us, foolish-minded,
2.7.17.106
kuddho'bhavaṃ dantilo'haṃ matto'haṃ kohalāhvayaḥ.. 53..
[became angry]—I, Dantila, became angry, and he, called Kohala, became arrogant.
2.7.17.107
kruddhaḥ śaśāpa tau sadyaḥ pitā dharmeṣu lālasaḥ.. 54..
Enraged, our father, who was devoted to righteous duties, immediately cursed the two:
2.7.17.108
putraṃ ca dharmavimukhaṃ bhāryāṃ cā'priyavādinīm ..
"A son averse to righteousness, a wife who speaks harsh words,
2.7.17.109
abrahmaṇyaṃ ca rājānaṃtyajetsadyo na cetpatet.55..
and a king unfriendly to brahmins—one should renounce them immediately, lest one fall.
2.7.17.110
dākṣiṇyādarthalobhādvā saṃsargaṃ ye prakurvate..
Those who associate [with them] out of courtesy or greed for wealth,
2.7.17.111
te sarve narakaṃ yāṃti yāvadiṃdrāścaturdaśa..
they all go to hell for as long as fourteen Indras reign."
2.7.17.112
iti jñātvā śaśāpāvāṃ madakrodhapariplutau..56..
Knowing this, he cursed the two of us overwhelmed with pride and anger:
2.7.17.113
kuddho'yaṃ daṃtilo bhūyātsiṃhaḥ krodhapariplutaḥ..
"Let this Dantila, who is angry, become a lion filled with rage;
2.7.17.114
mattastu kohalo bhūyānmatto mātaṃgayūthapaḥ..57..
and let Kohala, who is proud, become a rutting leader of a herd of elephants!"
2.7.17.115
kṛtānutāpau paścāttu prārthayāvo vimocanam..
Having repented afterwards, however, the two of us begged for deliverance.
2.7.17.116
āvābhyāṃ prārthito bhūyo viśāpaṃ ca dadaupitā.. 58..
Besought by the two of us, our father once more granted an end to the curse:
2.7.17.117
yuvāṃ prāpya ca duryoniṃ kiyatkālāntare'pi ca ..
"After having entered a wretched womb, yet after some time,
2.7.17.118
saṃgamo bhavitā tatra parasparavadheṣiṇoḥ..59..
there shall be a meeting for the two of you, seeking to kill each other.
2.7.17.119
tasminneva hi samaye saṃvādo vyādhaśaṃkhayoḥ ..
At that very time, the dialogue of the hunter and Śaṅkha
2.7.17.120
vaiśākhadharmaviṣayo daivādvāṃ śravaṇe'pi ca.. 2.7.17.60..
concerning the righteous duties of Vaiśākha, by destiny, into your hearing also
2.7.17.121
gamiṣyati kṣaṇādeva tasmānmuktirbhaviṣyati ..
shall enter; instantly from that, liberation will come about.
2.7.17.122
śāpānmuktau pūrvameva rūpamāsthāya putrakau..61 ..
Released from the curse, assuming your former forms, O my two sons,
2.7.17.123
māmeva prāpya vasataṃ nānyathā me vaco bhavet..
come to me and live; my word cannot be otherwise."
2.7.17.124
iti śaptau ca guruṇā duryoniṃ prāpya durmatī..62..
Having been cursed thus by our father and entered a wretched womb, foolish-minded,
2.7.17.125
prāpya daivātsaṃgatiṃ ca parasparavadhaiṣiṇau ..
and having by destiny met together, seeking to kill each other,
2.7.17.126
saṃvādaṃ yuvayordivyaṃ śubhaṃ taṃ śuśruvāvahe ..63..
we two have heard that divine, auspicious conversation of you two.
2.7.17.127
tena sadyo vimuktiśca kṣaṇādevā''vayorabhūt..
By that, immediate liberation came to both of us in a mere instant.
2.7.17.128
iti sarvaṃ samākhyāya praṇamya ca munīśvaram..64..
Having related all this and bowed to the lord of sages,
2.7.17.129
samāmaṃtryābhyanujñātau jagmatuḥ pituraṃtikam..
having taken leave and been permitted, they went to their father's presence.
2.7.17.130
tadevaṃ saṃpradṛśyāha munirvyādhaṃ dayānidhiḥ ..65..
Seeing that happen thus, the sage, a treasure of compassion, said to the hunter:
2.7.17.131
paśya vaiśākhamāhātmyaśravaṇasya phalaṃ mahat ..
"Behold the great fruit of hearing the Vaiśākha-māhātmya!
2.7.17.132
muhūrtaśravaṇādeva tayormuktiḥ kare sthitā ..66..
From listening for just a single muhūrta, liberation was placed in their hands!"
2.7.17.133
iti bruvāṇaṃ munipuṃgavaṃ taṃ dayānidhiṃ niḥspṛhamagryabuddhim..
To that eminent sage who was speaking thus, a treasure of compassion, detached, of foremost intellect,
2.7.17.134
viśuddhasattvaṃ sukṛtaikapātraṃ sa nyastaśastraḥ punarāha vyādhaḥ..67..
of purified nature, the sole vessel of good deeds, the hunter, having cast down his weapon, spoke again:
