The son of Mithilā said:
Which lunar days are holy in this month named Vaiśākha? / Which gifts are praised specifically on which of those days?
Which are famous in the world? Tell me this in detail.
Śrutadeva said:
All thirty lunar days are holy in Vaiśākha when the sun is in Aries.
Merit acquired on an Ekādaśī becomes multiplied a hundred millionfold. / Whatever merit there is in all gifts, whatever fruit in all sacred fords,
one attains it entirely when bathed in water on an Ekādaśī in Vaiśākha. / Bathing, gift-giving, austerity, oblation, pious acts of worshiping deities,
and listening to the narrative bring about immediate liberation. / Even one afflicted by diseases and the like, or oppressed by poverty,
becomes fulfilled upon hearing this holy narrative. / One by whom these auspicious [days] are spent without bathing and without giving,
is considered a slayer of cows, an ungrateful person, and a great slayer of his ancestors. / Reservoirs of water are accessible, and one's body is under one's control;
Mādhava is to be served with the mind, and the season is endowed with the best of virtues. / The virtuous are compassionate—who would not serve Mādhava?
By the poor, by the rich, by the lame, and by the blind, / by eunuchs, by widows, by women, and likewise by men,
by children, youth, and the elderly, and even by the sick, O protector of the earth: / the religious duty within the sphere of Vaiśākha is indeed extremely easy to perform.
Having reached this month, perform these auspicious duties. / Who does not make an effort? What other [month] could be more auspicious than this?
The lowest of men who does not perform these extremely accessible duties, / for him alone hellish worlds are easily attained; of this there is no doubt.
Now, therefore, I shall declare what is the best lunar day in that month, / that day which destroys all sins, extracted like the essence of curd.
In the exceedingly holy month of Caitra, when the sun is stationed in Aries, / destroying sins, having the ancestors as its deities, granting the fruit of ten million Gayās;
right here a holy ancient song about the ancestors is heard. / Listen, O king, to that true story: while Sāvarṇi was ruling the earth,
at the end of thirty Kaliyugas, when all religious duty was abandoned, / in Ānarta there was a certain twice-born known as Dharmavarṇa.
Seeing people engaged in sin in the Kaliyuga, O king, / in its very first quarter, bereft of the duties of caste;
he once went to the sacrificial session of the great-souled sages, / who were observing silence, in the sacred field of Puṣkara.
There, holy discourses of the seers pertaining to the scriptures were held; / there, certain ones steadfast in their vows praised the Kaliyuga:
'The merit pleasing Mādhava which in the Kṛtayuga takes a year to achieve, / in the Tretā takes a month, and in the Dvāpara a fortnight, O king;
therefore, from remembering Viṣṇu in the Kaliyuga, the merit is tenfold. / Even very little merit becomes ten millionfold in the Kaliyuga.
When [the world] is devoid of compassion and merit, and destitute of charity and duty, / if one exercises compassion and gives a gift, uttering the name of Hari even once,
he surely goes upward; and likewise one who gives food in a famine.' / On the occasion of this discourse, the sage Nārada arrived,
holding his penis with one hand and his tongue with the other, laughing, / and like a madman, that best of sages danced there.
The assembly members then asked him: 'What is this, O Nārada?' / That wise one, still dancing and laughing, replied to them all:

'What has been said here out of delight by you dancing ones whose minds are purified,
2.7.22.254_2

that "we have achieved our aim, there is no doubt, this holy Kali has arrived"—
2.7.22.254_3

that is true, without doubt; much is achieved through very little;
2.7.22.254_4
smaraṇāttoṣamāyāti keśavaḥ kleśanāśanaḥ .. 27 ..
Keśava, the destroyer of distress, becomes pleased through mere remembrance.
2.7.22.254_5

Nevertheless, I shall tell you of two things that are certainly difficult to accomplish:
2.7.22.254_6

the control of the penis, O sons, and of the tongue constantly.
2.7.22.254_7

He who possesses both of these would indeed be Janārdana himself.

Therefore, you must not stay here upon the arrival of the Kaliyuga.

Completing the sacrificial session, they quickly went away at their ease.

wearing matted hair and bark garments, he departed once again,
2.7.22.254_16

his mind astonished, to see the immoral ways in the Kali age.
2.7.22.254_17

There he saw dreadful people, wicked and intent on sinful conduct:
2.7.22.254_18

all the twice-born were heretics, and śūdras were wandering ascetics;
2.7.22.254_19

the wife hates her husband, and the disciple hates his teacher;
2.7.22.254_20

the servant kills his master, and the son is intent on murdering his father;
2.7.22.254_21
śūdraprāyā dvijāḥ sarve bastaprāyāśca dhenavaḥ ..
all the twice-born are practically śūdras, and cows are like goats;
2.7.22.254_22
gāthāprāyāstathā vedāḥ kriyāsāmyāḥ śubhāḥ kriyāḥ .. 36 ..
the Vedas are reduced to mere popular songs, and sacred rites are treated as ordinary actions;
2.7.22.254_23
bhūtapretapiśācādyāḥ phaladāstatra devatāḥ ..
ghosts, spirits, goblins and the like are the deities granting fruits there,
2.7.22.254_24
tā eva śraddhayā'rcaṃti janāḥ pāparatāḥ śitāḥ .. 37 ..
and these alone do people, devoted to sin and sharp [in deceit], worship with faith;
2.7.22.254_25
sarve vyavāyaniratāstadarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ ..
all are devoted to sexual intercourse, staking their lives for its sake;
2.7.22.254_26
kūṭasākṣyapravaktāraḥ sadā kaitavamānasāḥ .. 38 ..
giving false testimony, with minds always deceitful;
2.7.22.254_27
manasyekaṃ vacasyekaṃ karmaṇyekaṃ sadā kalau ..
one thing is in the mind, another in speech, and another in deed, always in the Kali age;
2.7.22.254_28
sarveṣāṃ haitukī vidyā sā pūjyā nṛpamaṃdire .. 39 ..
the learning of all is rationalistic debate, and that is honoured in the royal palace;
2.7.22.254_29
gītādyāśca kalā vidyā nṛpāṇāṃ ca priyāvahāḥ ..
the arts and knowledges such as singing bring delight to kings;
2.7.22.254_30
hīnāśca pūjyatāṃ yāṃti nottamāśca kalau yuge .. 2.7.22.40 ..
the low attain honour, and not the noble, in the Kali age;
2.7.22.254_31
śrotriyāśca dvijāḥ sarve daridrāḥ syuḥ kalau yuge ..
all the twice-born learned in the Veda become impoverished in the Kali age;
2.7.22.254_32
viṣṇubhaktirnarāṇāṃ tu prāyaśo naiva vartate ..41..
devotion to Viṣṇu scarcely exists among men;
2.7.22.254_33
prāyaḥ pākhaṃḍabhūyiṣṭhaṃ puṇyakṣetraṃ bhaviṣyati ..
sacred fields will mostly be full of heretics;
2.7.22.254_34
śūdrā dharmapravaktāro jaṭilāstāpasāḥ kalau ..42..
śūdras are expositors of dharma, and ascetics have matted locks in Kali;
2.7.22.254_35
sarve cālpāyuṣo martyā dayāhīnā śaṭhā janāḥ ..
all mortals are short-lived, devoid of compassion, and deceitful;
2.7.22.254_36
sarve dharmapravaktāraḥ sarve ca grahaṇotsavāḥ .. 43 ..
all are expositors of dharma, and all delight in receiving [gifts];
2.7.22.254_37
svārcanaṃ cā'pi hīcchaṃti vṛthā nindāparāyaṇāḥ ..
they desire worship for themselves, and are given to baseless slander;
2.7.22.254_38
asūyāniratāḥ sarve prabhoḥ svagṛhamāgate .. 44 ..
all are given to envy when their master arrives at his own house;
2.7.22.254_39
bhrātā ca bhaginīgaṃtā pitā putrīṃ ca vai kalau ..
a brother violates his sister, and a father indeed his daughter, in Kali;
2.7.22.254_40
sarve'pi śūdrīniratāḥ sarve vārāṃganāratāḥ .. 45 ..
all are devoted to śūdra women, and all consort with courtesans;
2.7.22.254_41
sādhūnnaiva vijānaṃti bahupāpāṃśca manyate ..
they do not recognize the virtuous, and regard them as great sinners;
2.7.22.254_42
vyaktīkurvaṃti sādhūnāṃ doṣamekaṃ durāgrahāḥ .. 46 ..
in their stubborn malice they expose a single fault of the good;
2.7.22.254_43
pāpānāṃ doṣajātāni guṇatvena vadanti hi ..
they speak of the collection of faults of the sinful as virtues;
2.7.22.254_44
doṣameva pragṛhṇaṃti kalau tu viguṇā janāḥ ..47..
the devoid of virtues in Kali grasp only at faults;
2.7.22.254_45
jalaukā dharmasaṃyuktā raktaṃ pivati no payaḥ ..
a leech possessing its nature drinks blood, not milk;
2.7.22.254_46
auṣadhyaḥ sattvahīnā hi ṛtūn vyatyayāstathā .. 48 ..
medicinal herbs are destitute of potency, and the seasons are inverted;
2.7.22.254_47
durbhikṣaṃ sarvarāṣṭreṣu kanyā kāle na sūyate ..
famine reigns in all kingdoms; a maiden does not give birth at the proper time;
2.7.22.254_48
naṭanartakavidyāsu prītimanto narāḥ kalau .. 49 ..
men take pleasure in the arts of actors and dancers in Kali;
2.7.22.254_49
vedavedāṃtavidyāsu niratā ye guṇādhikāḥ ..
those devoted to the learning of the Vedas and the Upaniṣads, possessing superior virtues,
2.7.22.254_50
bhṛtyānpaśyaṃti tānmūḍhāste bhraṣṭāścākhilā nṛpa .. 2.7.22.50 ..
fools view as servants; they are completely fallen, O king;
2.7.22.254_51
tyaktaśrāddhakriyāḥ sarve tyaktavedoditakriyāḥ ..
all have abandoned funeral rites, and abandoned the rites prescribed by the Veda;
2.7.22.254_52
jihvāyāṃ viṣṇunāmāni na vartaṃte kadācana ..
the names of Viṣṇu are never on their tongues;
2.7.22.254_53
śṛṃgārarasa nirvāṇāstadgītānyeva te jaguḥ ..51..
immersed in erotic sentiment, they sing only its songs;
2.7.22.254_54
na viṣṇusevā na ca śāstravārtā na yāgadīkṣā na vicāraleśaḥ ..
no service to Viṣṇu, no discourse on scriptures, no consecration for sacrifice, not the least reflection,
2.7.22.254_55
na tīrthayātrā na ca dānadharmāḥ kalau jane kvā'pi babhūva citram .. 52 ..
no pilgrimage to sacred fords, no virtues of giving—wonderfully, none existed anywhere among the people in Kali.
2.7.22.254_56
tāndṛṣṭvā gharmavarṇo'pi subhīto'tyantavismitaḥ ..
Seeing them, Dharmavarṇa was greatly frightened and utterly astonished.
2.7.22.254_57
vaṃśaṃ pāpātkṣayaṃ yāṃtaṃ dṛṣṭvā dvīpāṃtaraṃ yayau .. 53 ..
Seeing his lineage going to destruction through sin, he went to another continent.
2.7.22.254_58
sa caransarvadvīpeṣu lokeṣveva tu sarvaśaḥ ..
Wandering through all the continents and worlds everywhere,
2.7.22.254_59
pitṛlokaṃ yayau dhīmānkadācitkautukānvitaḥ .. 54 ..
the wise man once, moved by curiosity, went to the realm of the ancestors.
2.7.22.254_60
tatrā'paśyanmahāghorāñcchrāmyamāṇāṃśca karmabhiḥ ..55..
There he saw [beings] extremely terrible, worn out by their deeds,
2.7.22.254_61
dhāvato rudamānāṃśca patataḥ patitānapi ..
running, crying out, falling, and already fallen.
2.7.22.254_62
tatrāpaśyaccāndhakūpe patitānsvānpitṝnadhaḥ .. 56 ..
There he saw his own ancestors fallen down into a blind well,
2.7.22.254_63
dūrvāgralaṃbino dīnāndūrvācchede hi śaṃkitān ..
wretched, hanging from the tip of a blade of dūrvā grass, trembling at the thought of the dūrvā breaking.
2.7.22.254_64
tadā prāptaḥ ko'pi cākhurdūrvāmūlaṃ tadāśrayam .. 57 ..
Then a certain rat came upon the root of that dūrvā grass which was their support;
2.7.22.254_65
tena bhāgatrayaṃ cāttameko bhāgovaśeṣitaḥ ..
by it three parts were eaten away, and only one part remained.
2.7.22.254_66
taṃ dṛṣṭvā te kṣīyamāṇaṃ mūlaṃ duḥkhena karṣiṇaḥ .. .. 58 ..
Seeing that root diminishing, they were tormented with distress.
2.7.22.254_67
adho dṛṣṭvā cāṃ'dhakūpaṃ taṭapātādibhīṣaṇam ..
Looking down, they saw the blind well, terrifying with crumbling edges and the like,
2.7.22.254_68
duruttāraṃ mahāghoraṃ karmaṇāptaṃ suduḥkhitāḥ .. 59 ..
hard to cross, very dreadful, attained by their action, exceedingly miserable.
2.7.22.254_69
agre cā'pi duruttāramavalaṃbavivarjitam ..
Ahead too, it was hard to escape, devoid of any support.
2.7.22.254_70
tāndraṣṭvā vismito bhūtvā dayālurvākyamabravīt ..2.7.22.60..
Seeing them, the compassionate man, filled with wonder, spoke [these] words:
2.7.22.254_71
ke yūyaṃ patitā hyasminkena dustarakarmaṇā ..
"Who are you that have fallen into this, by what deed hard to overcome?"
2.7.22.254_72
kasya gotre samutpannāḥ kathaṃ vo muktirūrjitā .. 61 ..
In whose gotra were you born? How can your powerful liberation be attained?
2.7.22.254_73
etadyūyaṃ vadadhvaṃ me śarma vo'tha bhaviṣyati ..
Tell me this; then welfare will come to you."
2.7.22.254_74
ityevamuditāstena pitaro'tha suduḥkhitāḥ .. 62 ..
Addressed in this manner by him, the ancestors, deeply afflicted with sorrow,
2.7.22.254_75
tamūcuḥ karuṇāṃ vācaṃ dharmaśruti puraḥsarāḥ ..
Spoke compassionate words to him, preceded by [teachings of] righteousness and the scriptures:
2.7.22.254_76
.. pitara ūcuḥ .. ..
The ancestors said:
2.7.22.254_77
vayaṃ śrīvatsagotrīyā bhuvi santānavarjitāḥ .. 63 ..
"We belong to the Śrīvatsa gotra, bereft of offspring on earth,
2.7.22.254_78
piṃḍaśrāddhavihīnāśca tena pacyāmahe vayam ..
And deprived of rice-ball offerings and śrāddhas; therefore, we are tormented.
2.7.22.254_79
niḥsantāno'pi no vaṃśo jātaḥ pāpaiḥ kalau yuge ..64..
Our lineage too has become childless through sins in the Kali age;
2.7.22.254_80
nā'smākaṃ piṃḍadaścāsti vaṃśe pāpātkṣayaṃ gate..
We have no one to offer rice-balls, since the lineage has gone to ruin through sin.
2.7.22.254_81
tenāṃ'dhakūpe patanaṃ nistaṃtūnāṃ durātmanām ..65..
Therefore, there is a fall into a blind well for us wicked ones, left without descendants.
2.7.22.254_82
eko hi vartate vaṃśe dharmavarṇo mahāyaśāḥ ..
Indeed, one alone remains in the lineage, named Dharmavarṇa, of great renown.
2.7.22.254_83
sa viraktaścaranneko na gārhasthamupeyivān .. 66 ..
Dispassionate, wandering alone, he has not entered upon householdership.
2.7.22.254_84
taṃtunā tena bibhrāmo dūrvānālāvalaṃbitāḥ ..
Supported by him as our thread, we hang suspended by a reed of dūrvā grass.
2.7.22.254_85
nistaṃtutvācca tanmūlamākhuḥ khādati pratyaham .. 67 ..
Because there are no other threads, a rat daily gnaws at its root.
2.7.22.254_86
ekasyaivā'vaśiṣṭatvātkiṃcinnalo'vaśeṣitaḥ ..
Since only one [descendant] remains, a little of the reed is left;
2.7.22.254_87
ākhunā khādyamānaśca vartate saumya paśyatām .. .. 68 ..
And it is being eaten away by the rat, gentle one, as we look on.
2.7.22.254_88
tasya cā''yuḥkṣaye tāta śeṣamākhurhariṣyati ..
When his lifespan ends, dear one, the rat will devour the rest;
2.7.22.254_89
paścātkūpe patiṣyāmo duruttāreṃ'dhatāmase .. 69 ..
Afterwards we will fall into the blind, dark well from which it is hard to cross.
2.7.22.254_90
tasmāttvaṃ ca bhuvaṃ gatvā dharmavarṇaṃ prabodhaya ..
Therefore, go to earth and awaken Dharmavarṇa,
2.7.22.254_91
asmadvākyairdayāpātrairgārhasthyaṃ vimukhaṃ munim .. 2.7.22.70 ..
The sage averse to householdership, with our words that evoke compassion:
2.7.22.254_92
pitaraste bhṛśā'rtā hi narake patitā mayā ..
'Your ancestors, intensely afflicted, have fallen into hell,
2.7.22.254_93

Seen by me in a blind, impassable well, hanging from a dūrvā reed.
2.7.22.254_94
sā dūrvā vaṃśarūpā hi tanmūlaṃ satataṃ mune ..
That dūrvā reed has the form of the lineage, O sage, and constantly at its root,
2.7.22.254_95
kālākhyo mūṣakastasya mūlaṃ khādati pratyaham .. 72 ..
A rat named Time daily gnaws its base.
2.7.22.254_96
vaṃśanāśo'nukramata ekastvaṃ tvavaśeṣitaḥ ..
By the destruction of the lineage in succession, you alone are left behind.
2.7.22.254_97
tena mūlasya dūrvāyā naṣṭaṃ bhāgatrayaṃ mune ..73..
By this, O sage, three quarters of the root of the dūrvā are destroyed.
2.7.22.254_98
eko bhāgo'vaśiṣṭo'tra yatastvaṃ vartase bhuvi ..
One part remains here, because you exist on earth.
2.7.22.254_99

The rat indeed nibbles at you slightly, in the gradual diminution of your life.
2.7.22.254_100
parete tvayi cā'smākaṃ tavā'pi patanaṃ bhavet ..
When you have passed away, our fall and yours as well will take place
2.7.22.254_101
kūpa evāndhatāmisre saṃtāne'pi kṣayaṃ gate .. 75 ..
Into the very well of blinding darkness, when the lineage is fully extinct.
2.7.22.254_102
tasmādgārhasthyamāsādya kuru saṃtativardhanam..
Therefore, taking up householdership, bring about the growth of descendants.
2.7.22.254_103
tenā'smākaṃ tavā'pi syādgatirūrdhvā na saṃśayaḥ .. 76..
Thereby our higher realm and yours too will come to be, without doubt.
2.7.22.254_104
eṣṭavyā bahavaḥ putrā yadyeko'pi gayāṃ vrajet ..
Many sons should be desired, in case even one might go to Gayā,
2.7.22.254_105
yajeta vā'śvamedhaṃ ca nīlaṃ vā vṛṣamutsṛjet .. 77 ..
Or perform a horse sacrifice, or release a dark blue bull;
2.7.22.254_106
yadyeko'pi ca vaiśākhe māghe vā kārtike'pi ca ..
Or if even one, in the month of Vaiśākha, Māgha, or Kārtika,
2.7.22.254_107
asmānuddiśya vai snānaṃ śrāddhaṃ dānaṃ kariṣyati .. 78 ..
Will perform ritual ablution, śrāddha, and donation on our behalf;
2.7.22.254_108
tena cordhvagatirbhūyānnarakāduddhṛtiśca naḥ ..
By that, an upward path and rescue from hell would come to us.
2.7.22.254_109
eko vā viṣṇubhaktaḥ syādeko vā harivāsarī .. 79 ..
Or let one be a devotee of Viṣṇu, or let one observe the day of Hari,
2.7.22.254_110
eko vā śṛṇuyādviṣṇoḥ kathāṃ pāpavināśanīm ..
Or let one listen to the story of Viṣṇu that destroys sin:
2.7.22.254_111
tasyātītaṃ kulaśataṃ bhāvi cā'pi kulaṃ śatam .. 2.7.22.80 ..
His past hundred generations and a future hundred generations as well,
2.7.22.254_112
api pāpavṛtaṃ kvā'pi narakaṃ naiva paśyati ..
Even if surrounded by sin, never see hell anywhere.
2.7.22.254_113
kimanyairbahubhiḥ putrairdayādharmavivarjitaiḥ .. 81 ..
What is the use of other numerous sons who are devoid of compassion and virtue,
2.7.22.254_114
ye jātā nārcayaṃtyaddhā viṣṇuṃ nārāyaṇaṃ kule ..
Who, when born into a family, do not truly worship Viṣṇu Nārāyaṇa?
2.7.22.254_115
nā'putrasya hi loko'sti sarvametajjanā viduḥ ..82..
For there is no heavenly world for one without a son; people know all this.
2.7.22.254_116
tatrā'pi ca dayāyuktaṃ tatsaṃtānaṃ ca durlabham ..
Even there, such offspring endowed with compassion is rare.'
2.7.22.254_117
iti taṃ bodhayitvā tu vākyairetaiśca sūnṛtaiḥ .. 83 ..
Having thus awakened him with these truthful words,
2.7.22.254_118
viraktasyordhvaretasya gārhasthye tvaṃ matiṃ kuru ..
Direct the mind of him, dispassionate and chaste, toward householdership."
2.7.22.254_119
pitṝṇāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā dharmavarṇo'tivismitaḥ ..84..
Hearing the words of the ancestors, Dharmavarṇa was greatly astonished.
2.7.22.254_120
praṇamya prāṃjaliḥ prāha rudanvai jātavepathuḥ ..
Bowing with folded hands, weeping and trembling, he spoke:
2.7.22.254_121
nāmnāhaṃ dharmavarṇaśca yuṣmadvaṃśyo durāgrahī .. .. 85 ..
"I am Dharmavarṇa by name, born of your lineage, stubborn in purpose.
2.7.22.254_122
satre śrutvā tu vacanaṃ nāradasya mahātmanaḥ ..
Having heard the words of the great-souled Nārada at the sacrifice:
2.7.22.254_123
jihvādārḍhyaṃ guhyadārḍhyaṃ na kasyā'pi kalau yuge .. 86 ..
'No one possesses control of the tongue or control of the genitals in the Kali age';
2.7.22.254_124
dṛṣṭvā bhuvi ca pāpiṣṭhāṃstāñjanānapi śaṃkitaḥ ..
And seeing those most sinful people on earth, filled with doubt,
2.7.22.254_125
bhīto durjanasaṃgatyā carandvīpāṃtare vasan .. 87 ..
Afraid of association with wicked people, I have lived wandering among other islands.
2.7.22.254_126
pādāstrayo gatā hyasya kaleḥ pādeṃ'tyake'pi ca ..
Three quarters of this Kali age have passed, and even in this final quarter,
2.7.22.254_127
gatāḥ sārddhatrayo bhāgā idānīṃ janakā ime .. 88 ..
Three and a half portions have gone by now, O forefathers.
2.7.22.254_128
nā'haṃ vedmi bhavadduḥkhaṃ vṛthā janma gataṃ mama ..
I did not know your suffering; my life has passed in vain,
2.7.22.254_129
yasminkule tvahaṃ jāta ṛṇaṃ pitrorna vai hṛtam .. 89 ..
Since in the lineage in which I was born, I have not removed the debt to my parents.
2.7.22.254_130
kiṃ tena jātamātreṇa bhūbhāreṇā'tra śatruṇā ..
What is the use of him who is merely born as a burden to the earth, an enemy here,
2.7.22.254_131
yo jāto nārcayedviṣṇuṃ pitṝndevānṛṣīṃstathā .. 2.7.22.90 ..
Who, having been born, does not worship Viṣṇu, the ancestors, the gods, and the seers?"
2.7.22.254_132
yuṣmadājñāṃ kariṣyāmi māmā''jñāpayata kṣitau ..
"I will carry out your command; command me on earth,
2.7.22.254_133
yathā na kalibādhā syāttatra saṃsārato'pi vā .. 91 ..
so that there will be no affliction from the Kali [age] there, or from worldly existence either.
2.7.22.254_134
kartavyānyapi kṛtyāni mayā putreṇa bhūtale ..
The duties too must be performed by me, your son, on the earth's surface."
2.7.22.254_135
ityuktāstena vaṃśyena dharmavarṇena dhīmatā ..92..
Having been spoken to in this way by that descendant, the wise Dharmavarṇa,
2.7.22.254_136
kiṃcidāśvastamanasa idamūcurmahīpate ..
their minds somewhat comforted, O king, they said this:
2.7.22.254_137
putra paśya daśāmetāṃ pitṝṇāṃ te mahātmanām .. 93 ..
"Son, behold this state of your noble ancestors,
2.7.22.254_138
saṃtatyabhāvātpatatāṃ dūrvāmātrāvalaṃbinām ..
falling due to lack of progeny, hanging on merely to a blade of dūrvā grass.
2.7.22.254_139
tvaṃ gārhasthyamupālabhya saṃtatyāsmānsamuddhara .. 94 ..
Take up the householder's life and deliver us through offspring!
2.7.22.254_140
ye ca viṣṇukathāraktā ye smaraṃtyaniśaṃ harim ..
Those who delight in narratives of Viṣṇu, who remember Hari day and night,
2.7.22.254_141
ye sadācāraniratā na tānvai bādhate kaliḥ .. .. 95 ..
and who are devoted to right conduct—Kali indeed does not afflict them.
2.7.22.254_142
śāligrāmaśilā yasya gṛhe tiṣṭhati mānada ..
He in whose house a śālagrāma stone remains, O honour-giver,
2.7.22.254_143
athavā bhārataṃ gehe na taṃ vai bādhate kaliḥ .. 96 ..
or in whose home the Mahābhārata [is kept]—Kali indeed does not afflict him.
2.7.22.254_144
yaśca vaiśākhanirato māghasnānaparaśca yaḥ ..
And he who is devoted to [the observances of] Vaiśākha, and intent on the ritual ablution of Māgha,
2.7.22.254_145
kārtike dīpadātā yo na taṃ vai bādhate kaliḥ ..97..
and he who gives a lamp in Kārtika—Kali indeed does not afflict him.
2.7.22.254_146
pratyahaṃ śṛṇuyādyastu kathāṃ viṣṇormahātmanaḥ ..
And whoever listens daily to the narrative of noble Viṣṇu,
2.7.22.254_147
pāpaghnīṃ mokṣadāṃ divyāṃ na taṃ vai bādhate kaliḥ ..98..
which destroys sin and grants liberation, which is divine—Kali indeed does not afflict him.
2.7.22.254_148
yadgṛhe vaiśvadevaśca yadgṛhe tulasī śubhā..
In whose house the Vaiśvadeva [offering is made], and in whose house the auspicious tulasī [stands],
2.7.22.254_149
yadaṃgaṇe śubhā gauśca na taṃ vai bādhate kaliḥ..99..
and in whose courtyard there is an auspicious cow—Kali indeed does not afflict him.
2.7.22.254_150
tasmānno bhītirastīha yuge pāpātmake'pi ca ..
Therefore, there is no fear here, even in an age whose nature is sin.
2.7.22.254_151
śīghraṃ gaccha bhuvaṃ putra māso'yaṃ mādhavāhvayaḥ .. 2.7.22.100 ..
Go quickly to the earth, son; this month is named Mādhava (Vaiśākha).
2.7.22.254_152
sarveṣāmupakārāya meṣasaṃsthe divākare ..
For the benefit of all, when the sun is stationed in Aries,
2.7.22.254_153
triṃśacca tithayaḥ puṇyā meṣasaṃsthe divākare .. 101 ..
all thirty lunar days are meritorious when the sun is stationed in Aries.
2.7.22.254_154
ekaikasyāṃ kṛtaṃ puṇyaṃ koṭikoṭiguṇaṃ bhavet ..
The merit acquired on each single one is multiplied ten millionfold.
2.7.22.254_155
tatrā'pi caitrabahulo darśo nṛṇāṃ ca muktidaḥ .. 2 ..
Even there, the new-moon day of the dark fortnight of Caitra grants liberation to men.
2.7.22.254_156
priyaśca pitṛdevānāṃ sadyo muktividhāyakaḥ ..
It is dear to the ancestors and gods, bestowing immediate liberation.
2.7.22.254_157
ye vai pitṝnsamuddiśya śrāddhaṃ kurvaṃti taddine ..3..
Those who perform a śrāddha dedicated to the ancestors on that day,
2.7.22.254_158
sodakuṃbhaṃ piṃḍadānaṃ tadakṣayyaphalaṃ labhet ..
along with a water-pot and an offering of piṇḍas, obtain an inexhaustible fruit.
2.7.22.254_159
ye ca kurvaṃti vai śrāddhamamāyāṃ ca madhau suta .. 4 ..
And those who perform a śrāddha on the new moon in spring (Madhu), O son,
2.7.22.254_160
taiḥ kṛtaṃ tu gayākṣetre śrāddhaṃ koṭiguṇaṃ bhavet ..
a śrāddha performed by them in the sacred field of Gayā becomes ten million times greater.
2.7.22.254_161
yadi śrāddhaṃ madhau darśe śākenā'pi karoti ca.. 5 ..
If one performs a śrāddha on the new moon in spring, even with mere vegetables,
2.7.22.254_162
koṭiśrāddhaṃ gayāyāṃ tu kṛtaṃ tena na saṃśayaḥ ..
ten million śrāddhas are performed by him at Gayā, without doubt.
2.7.22.254_163
kuṃbhaṃ ca pānakaiḥ pūrṇaṃ karpūrāguruvāsitam .. 6 ..
A pot filled with sweet drinks, scented with camphor and aloe-wood—
2.7.22.254_164
yo na dadyānmadhau darśe sa pitṛghno na saṃśayaḥ ..
he who does not give [this] on the new moon in spring is a slayer of his ancestors, without doubt.
2.7.22.254_165
yo dadyācca madhau darśe sapānīyaṃ karīrakam .. 7 ..
And he who gives a small water-jar with water on the new moon in spring,
2.7.22.254_166
śrāddhaṃ ca bhaktisaṃyuktaḥ kurute ca kuloddhatim ..
and performs a śrāddha filled with devotion, effects the elevation of his family.
2.7.22.254_167
pitṝṇāṃ ca tathā loke nadī cā'mṛtavarṣiṇī .. 8 ..
And likewise in the realm of the ancestors, a river raining nectar
2.7.22.254_168
kuṃbhadānātprasarati śrāddhadānādidāyinām ..
flows from the gift of a pot, for those who give gifts of śrāddha and the like,
2.7.22.254_169
annasūpaghṛtāpūpalehyapāyasakardamān .. 9 ..
with mud of cooked rice, soup, ghee, cakes, electuaries, and milk-rice.
2.7.22.254_170
tasmājjhaṭiti tvaṃ gaccha yadā vā 'mā bhaviṣyati ..
Therefore, go at once; when the new-moon day arrives,
2.7.22.254_171
kuru śrāddhaṃ piṃḍadānaṃ sodakumbhaṃ mahāmate ..2.7.22.110..
perform the śrāddha, the offering of piṇḍas, together with a water-pot, O highly wise one!
2.7.22.254_172
sarveṣāmupakārāya gārhasthyaṃ ca samāśraya ..
Take refuge in the householder's life for the benefit of all;
2.7.22.254_173
dharmārthakāmaiḥ saṃtuṣṭaḥ prāpya saṃtānamuttamam .. 11 ..
satisfied with duty, wealth, and desire, having obtained excellent offspring,
2.7.22.254_174
punaśca munivṛttistvaṃ sukhaṃ dvīpe susaṃcara ..
you may again adopt the sage's way of life and roam happily through the continent."
2.7.22.254_175
ityādiṣṭaḥ pitṛbhiśca tūrṇaṃ bhūmiṃ yayau muniḥ .. 12 ..
Thus instructed by his ancestors, the sage went swiftly to the earth.
2.7.22.254_176
caitre māse meṣasaṃsthe puṇye māsi divākare ..
In the month of Caitra, when the sun was stationed in Aries in that holy month,
2.7.22.254_177
prātaḥ snātvā ca saṃtarjya pitṝndevānṛṣīṃstathā .. 13 ..
having bathed in the morning and offered libations to the ancestors, gods, and seers,
2.7.22.254_178
sodakuṃbhaṃ tathā śrāddhaṃ kṛtvā pāpavināśanam ..
and having performed the śrāddha with a water-pot, which destroys sin,
2.7.22.254_179
tena dattvā pitṝṇāṃ ca muktimāvṛttivarjitām .. 14 ..
by that he granted to his ancestors liberation from which there is no return.
2.7.22.254_180
svayaṃ vivāhamakarotsaṃtatiṃ prāpya vai satīm ..
He himself married, obtained virtuous offspring,
2.7.22.254_181
loke prakhyāpayāmāsa tāṃ tithiṃ pāpanāśanīm ..15..
and made known in the world that lunar day which destroys sin.
2.7.22.254_182
svayaṃ punarmudā bhaktyā gandhamādanamāyayau .. 16 ..
He himself returned again with joy and devotion to Gandhamādana.
2.7.22.254_183
tasmātpuṇyatamā caiṣā madhordarśāhvayā tithiḥ..
Therefore, most holy is this lunar day called the new moon of spring;
2.7.22.254_184
nānayā sadṛśī loke tithirdṛṣṭā śrutā'pi vā .. .. 117 ..
no lunar day equal to it has been seen or even heard of in the world.
2.7.22.254_185
iti śrīskāṃde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe vaiśākhamāsamāhātmye nāradāmvarīṣasaṃvāde kalidharmanirūpaṇe pitṛmuktirnāma dvāviṃśo'dhyāyaḥ .. 22 .. .. cha ..
Thus ends the twenty-second chapter, named "The Liberation of the Ancestors", in the exposition of the duties of the Kali age, in the dialogue between Nārada and Ambarīṣa, in the Māhātmya of the Month of Vaiśākha, in the second [section, the] Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the Śrī Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
