yo vai bhāgavataṃ śāstraṃ śṛṇotyetaddinatraye ..
He who hears the scripture of the Bhāgavata during these three days
2.7.25.53
na pāpairlipyate kvā'pi padmapatramivāṃbhasā .. 26 ..
Is not tainted by sins anywhere, like a lotus leaf by water.
2.7.25.54
devatvaṃ manujaiḥ prāptaṃ kaiścitsiddhatvameva ca ..
Divinity has been attained by some men, and perfection indeed by some;
2.7.25.55
kaiścitprāpto brahmabhāvo dinatrayaniṣevaṇāt ..27..
By some, the state of Brahman has been attained through the observance of the three days.
2.7.25.56
brahmajñānena vai muktiḥ prayāgamaraṇena vā ..
Liberation [is gained] indeed through knowledge of Brahman, or through dying at Prayāga,
2.7.25.57
athavā māsi vaiśākhe niyamena jalāpluteḥ .. 28 ..
Or from regularly bathing in water in the month of Vaiśākha.
2.7.25.58
nīlavṛṣaṃ samutsṛjya vaiśākhyāṃ ca jalāpluteḥ ..
By releasing a dark bull and bathing in water on the full moon of Vaiśākha,
2.7.25.59
samastabaṃdhanirmuktaḥ pumānyāti paraṃ padam .. 29 ..
A man, freed from all bondage, goes to the supreme abode.
2.7.25.60
gāṃ savatsāṃ dvijeṃdrāya sīdate ca kuṭumbine ..
[Giving] a cow with its calf to an eminent brahmin who is distressed and has a family,
2.7.25.61
ihāpamṛtyunirmuktaḥ paratra ca paraṃ vrajet .. 2.7.25.30 ..
Freed from untimely death in this world, he shall go to the supreme in the next.
2.7.25.62
snānadānavihīnastu vaiśākhī caiva yo nayet ..
But he who passes the full moon of Vaiśākha devoid of ritual ablution and giving,
2.7.25.63
śvānayoniśataṃ prāpya viṣṭhāyāṃ jāyate kṛmiḥ .. 31..
Having attained a hundred canine wombs, is born as a worm in excrement.
2.7.25.64
tisraḥ koṭyo'rdhakoṭiśca tīrthāni bhuvanatraye ..
The three and a half crores of sacred fords in the three worlds,
2.7.25.65
saṃbhūya maṃtrayāṃcakruḥ pāpasaṃghātaśaṃkitāḥ .. 32 ..
Having assembled together, took counsel, apprehensive of the mass of sins:
2.7.25.66
janā asmāsu pāpiṣṭhā visṛjanti svakaṃ malam ..
“Most sinful people cast off their own dirt into us.
2.7.25.67
tadasmākaṃ kathaṃ gacchediti ciṃtāsamanvitāḥ ..33..
How then may that depart from us?” Thus filled with anxiety,
2.7.25.68
tīrthapādaṃ hariṃ jagmuḥ śaraṇyaṃ śaraṇaṃ vibhum ..
They went for refuge to the omnipresent Hari, whose feet are sacred fords, worthy of refuge;
2.7.25.69
stutvā ca bahubhiḥ stotraiḥ prārthayāmāsuraṃjasā .. 34 ..
And having praised him with many hymns, they petitioned him straightforwardly:
2.7.25.70
devadeva jagannātha sarvāghaughavināśana ..
“O God of gods! O Lord of the universe! O destroyer of the flood of all sins!
2.7.25.71
janā asmāsu pāpiṣṭhāḥ snātvā pāpāni sarvaśaḥ .. 35 ..
Most sinful people, having bathed in us, casting off all their sins completely,
2.7.25.72
visṛjya tvatpadaṃ yāṃti tvadājñādhāriṇo bhuvi ..
Go to your abode, carrying out your command on earth.
2.7.25.73
asmākaṃ caiva tatpāpaṃ kathaṃ gacchejjanārdana .. 36 ..
How, O Janārdana, may that sin of ours depart?
2.7.25.74
tadupāyaṃ vadāsmākaṃ tvatpādaśaraṇaiṣiṇām ..
Tell that means to us who seek refuge at your feet!”
2.7.25.75
iti tīrthaiḥ prārthitastu bhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ .. 37 ..
Thus petitioned by the sacred fords, the blessed Creator of beings,
2.7.25.76
prahasanprāha tīrthāni meghagambhīrayā girā ..
Smiling, spoke to the sacred fords in a voice deep as a thundercloud:
2.7.25.77
.. śrībhagavānuvāca .. ..
The Blessed Lord said:
2.7.25.78
site pakṣe meṣasūrye vaiśākhāntedinatraye .. 38 ..
“In the bright fortnight, when the sun is in Aries, in the final three days of Vaiśākha,
2.7.25.79
sarvatīrthamaye puṇye mamā'pi prāṇavallabhe ..
Which consist of all sacred fords, are holy, and dear to me as my very life,
2.7.25.80
yūyaṃ bhagodayātpūrvaṃ bahiḥsaṃsthajalāplutāḥ .. 39 ..
Bathing in the waters situated outside before sunrise,
2.7.25.81
vimuktāghāḥ puṇyarūpā bhavaṃtvāśu sunirmalāḥ ..
May you quickly become free from sin, endowed with merit, and very pure!
2.7.25.82
bhavadbhiśca vimuktāghairye na snātā dinatraye .. 2.7.25.40 ..
And by you freed from sin—those who have not bathed during the three days,
2.7.25.83
teṣu tiṣṭhaṃtu tatpāpaṃ janairyuṣmadvirecitam ..
Let that sin purged by people from you remain upon them!”
2.7.25.84
iti tīrthapado viṣṇustīrthānāṃ ca varaṃ dadau .. 41 ..
Thus Viṣṇu, whose feet are sacred fords, granted the boon to the sacred fords.
2.7.25.85
anujñāpya ca tānyogāttatraivāṃtaradhīyata ..
And having bid them farewell, he disappeared right there through yoga.
2.7.25.86
svadhāmāni punaḥ prāpya tāni tīrthāni nityaśaḥ .. 42 ..
Having reached their own abodes again, those sacred fords constantly,
2.7.25.87
prativarṣaṃ tu vaiśākhe tathaivāṃtyadinatraye ..
Every year in Vaiśākha, in that very manner during the final three days,
2.7.25.88
tenāghaughaṃ vimucyaiva yāṃti nirmalatā maho .. 43 ..
Casting off the flood of sin by that means, attain purity. Oh, the wonder!
2.7.25.89
ye tu snānaṃ na kurvaṃti vaiśākhāṃtadinatraye ..
“Those who do not perform a ritual ablution during the final three days of Vaiśākha,
2.7.25.90
te bhavantu samastānāṃ janānāṃ pātakā''śrayāḥ ..44..
Let them become the receptacles of the sins of all people!”
2.7.25.91
iti śāpaṃ ca tīrthāni hyasnātānāṃ vadanti ca ..
Thus the sacred fords indeed utter a curse upon those who do not bathe.
2.7.25.92
na tena sadṛśaḥ pāpo yo na snāto dinatraye .. 45 ..
There is no sinner equal to him who has not bathed during the three days;
2.7.25.93
vicāriteṣu śāstreṣu na dṛṣṭo na ca vai śrutaḥ ..
None has been seen nor indeed heard of in the scriptures that have been examined.
2.7.25.94
tasmāddinatraye kāryaṃ snānadānārcanādikam .. 46 ..
Therefore, during the three days, ritual ablution, giving of gifts, worship, and the like must be done;
2.7.25.95
anyathā narakaṃ yāti yāvadiṃdrāścaturdaśa ..
Otherwise, one goes to hell for as long as fourteen Indras [endure].
2.7.25.96
ityetatsarvamākhyātaṃ śrutakīrte mahāmate .. 47 ..
Thus all this has been told [to you], O noble-minded Śrutakīrti!
2.7.25.97
pṛṣṭaṃ vaiśākhamāhātmyaṃ yathā dṛṣṭaṃ yathāśrutam ..
The māhātmya of Vaiśākha that was asked has been told, just as seen and heard,
2.7.25.98
māhātmyasya ca lekho'yaṃ mādhavasya ca varṇitaḥ .. 48 ..
and this record of the māhātmya of Mādhava has been described. (48)
2.7.25.99
kārtsnyādvaktuṃ ca brahmā'pi nālaṃ varṣaśatairapi ..
Even Brahmā would not be able to declare it completely, even in hundreds of years.
2.7.25.100
purā kailāsaśikhare pārvatyai śaṃkaraḥ svayam ..49..
Formerly, on the peak of Kailāsa, Śaṃkara himself (49)
2.7.25.101
āha mādhavamāhātmyaṃ pṛcchaṃtyai śatavatsaram ..
spoke the māhātmya of Mādhava for a hundred years to Pārvatī who asked.
2.7.25.102
tathāpi nāṃtamagamadaśakto virarāma ha ..2.7.25.50..
Even then he did not reach the end; being unable, he indeed ceased. (50)
2.7.25.103
ko nu varṇayituṃ śaktaḥ kārtsnyānmāhātmyamuttamam ..
Who indeed is capable of fully describing the supreme māhātmya,
2.7.25.104
vinā viṣṇuṃ jagannāthaṃ nārāyaṇamanāmayam .. 51 ..
except Viṣṇu, the Lord of the World, the faultless Nārāyaṇa? (51)
2.7.25.105
purā sarve'pi ṛṣayo māhātmyaṃ pāpanāśanam ..
Anciently, all the seers, desiring the welfare of people,
2.7.25.106
leśasya leśaṃ vyācakhyurjanānāṃ hitakāmyayā .. 52 ..
explained only a fraction of a fraction of this sin-destroying māhātmya. (52)
2.7.25.107
nāṃtaḥ kenāpi vyākhyāto hyaśaktatvānmahīpate ..
Its end has been expounded by no one, O king, on account of inability.
2.7.25.108
tvaṃ ca māse tu vaiśākhe kuru dānādisatkriyāḥ ..53..
You too, perform good acts such as gifting during the month of Vaiśākha. (53)
2.7.25.109
tena bhuktiṃ ca muktiṃ ca saṃprāpnoṣi na saṃśayaḥ ..
Thereby you will attain worldly enjoyment and liberation, without doubt.”
2.7.25.110
iti taṃ bodhayitvā ca maithilaṃ janakāhvayam .. 54 ..
Having thus instructed that king of Mithilā named Janaka, (54)
2.7.25.111
śrutadevastamāmaṃtrya gantuṃ cakre manastataḥ ..
Śrutadeva took leave of him and then made up his mind to depart.
2.7.25.112
jātāhlādaḥ sa rājarṣirgaladvāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ .. 55 ..
Filled with joy, his eyes moist and filled with tears, that royal seer (55)
2.7.25.113
utsavaṃ kārayāmāsa svābhivṛddhyai manoramam ..
arranged a delightful festival for his own prosperity.
2.7.25.114
grāmaṃ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya śibikāmadhiropya tam .. 56 ..
Having circumambulated the town, having mounted him on a palanquin, (56)
2.7.25.115
caturaṃgabalairyuktaḥ svayaṃ pṛṣṭhamathā'nvagāt ..
accompanied by his fourfold army, he himself then followed behind.
2.7.25.116
punaścāṃtaḥpuraṃ prāpya sakalairvibhavairapi .. 57 ..
Having returned again to the inner quarters, with all wealth, (57)
2.7.25.117
vastrairābharaṇaiścaiva gobhūtilahiraṇyakaiḥ ..
with garments, ornaments, cows, land, sesame seeds, and gold,
2.7.25.118
praṇamya ca parikramya tasthau prāṃjaliragrataḥ .. 58 ..
having bowed down and circumambulated, he stood before him with joined palms. (58)
2.7.25.119
tataḥ sa tu mahātejāḥ śrutadevo mahāyaśāḥ ..
Then that glorious sage Śrutadeva, of great splendour,
2.7.25.120
santuṣṭaḥ paramaprīto yayau dhāma svakaṃ muniḥ .. 59 ..
contented and extremely pleased, went to his own abode. (59)
2.7.25.121
trayodaśyāṃ caturdaśyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ ca mādhave ..
On the thirteenth, the fourteenth, and the full moon day of Mādhava,
2.7.25.122
snānaṃ dānaṃ pūjanaṃ ca kathāśravaṇameva ca .. 2.7.25.60 ..
ritual ablution, giving gifts, worship, and listening to the narrative— (60)
2.7.25.123
vaiśākhadharmanirataḥ sa vai mokṣamavāpnuyāt ..
one devoted to the duties of Vaiśākha indeed attains liberation,
2.7.25.124
dhanaśarmā brāhmaṇaśca pretāścaiva yathā purā .. 61 ..
just as the brahmin Dhanaśarman and the spirits did formerly. (61)
2.7.25.125
.. nārada uvāca .. ..
Nārada said:
2.7.25.126
ityetatparamākhyānamaṃbarīṣa tavoditam ..
“Thus, O Ambarīṣa, has this supreme narrative been told to you,
2.7.25.127
śravaṇātsarvapāpaghnaṃ sarvasaṃpadvidhāyakam .. 62 ..
which destroys all sins by hearing and bestows all prosperity. (62)
2.7.25.128
tena bhuktiṃ ca muktiṃ ca jñānaṃ mokṣaṃ ca viṃdati ..
Through it one obtains enjoyment, liberation, knowledge, and release.”
2.7.25.129
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā aṃvarīṣo mahāyaśāḥ .. 63 ..
Having heard his words, the renowned Ambarīṣa, (63)
2.7.25.130
prahṛṣṭāṃtaravṛttiśca bāhyavyāpāravarjitaḥ ..
with his inner mind overjoyed and detached from outward activity,
2.7.25.131
praṇanāma tathā mūrdhnā daṇḍavatpatito bhuvi .. 64 ..
prostrated himself with his head, falling like a rod upon the ground. (64)
2.7.25.132
vibhavairakhilaiścā'pi pūjayāmāsa taṃ punaḥ ..
He worshipped him again with all his riches.
2.7.25.133
saṃpūjitastamāmaṃtrya nārado bhagavānmuniḥ .. 65 ..
Having been worshipped, the blessed sage, wise Nārada, took leave of him (65)
2.7.25.134
lokāṃtaraṃ yayau dhīmāñcchāpānnaikatra saṃsthitiḥ ..
and went to another realm, since because of a curse he could not remain in one place.
2.7.25.135
ambarīṣo'pi rājarṣirnāradoktānimāñcchubhān .. 66 ..
The royal seer Ambarīṣa too, having practiced these auspicious (66)
2.7.25.136
dharmānkṛtvā vilīno'bhūtpare brahmaṇi nirguṇe ..
duties declared by Nārada, became merged into the supreme, attribute-free Brahman.
2.7.25.137
.. sūta uvāca .. ..
Sūta said:
2.7.25.138
ya idaṃ paramākhyānaṃ pāpaghnaṃ puṇyavardhanam .. 67 ..
Whoever listens to or recites this supreme narrative, (67)
2.7.25.139
śṛṇuyādvā paṭhedvā'pi sa yāti paramāṃ gatim ..
which destroys sin and increases merit, reaches the highest destination.
2.7.25.140
likhitaṃ pustakaṃ yeṣāṃ gṛhe tiṣṭhati mānadāḥ .. 68 ..
O respectful ones, in whose house a written book of it remains, (68)
2.7.25.141
teṣāṃ muktiḥ karasthā hi kimu tacchravaṇātmanām .. 69 ..
liberation is indeed in their hand; how much more so for those devoted to hearing it! (69)
