2.9.11.11
noddhartumaśakaṃste taṃ tadānīṃ tuṣṭuvurharim .. 5 ..

2.9.11.24
utpāṭya sāgarataṭe nidhāya harimāyayau .. 11 ..
uprooted it, set it down on the shore of the ocean, and returned to Hari.

"If you gods and asuras will give me a portion of the nectar,
2.9.11.30

2.9.11.31
tatheti te pratijñāya kṣiptvādāvoṣadhīlatāḥ ..
Saying "So be it," and having made that promise, they first threw in medicinal herbs and creepers,

2.9.11.36
purobhāgaṃ gṛhītvaiva tasthustenānumoditāḥ .. 17 ..
of the front part of the lord of serpents, they stood there, approved by him.
2.9.11.37
devatāpakṣapātitvaṃ sūcayansvasya ca prabhuḥ ..
And the Lord, demonstrating his partiality toward the gods,
2.9.11.38
yatra devāstatra tasthau tato daityāstu cukrudhuḥ .. 18 ..
stood where the gods were; at that the Daityas became enraged:
2.9.11.39
tapovidyāvayojyeṣṭhā adhobhāgamamaṅgalam ..
"We are foremost in austerity, learning, and age; how can we take the lower, inauspicious part
2.9.11.40
kathaṃ tiraśco gṛhṇīmo nedṛṅmūrkhā vayaṃ tviti .. 19 ..
of an animal? We are not such fools!"
2.9.11.41
saha devaistato viṣṇuḥ svayaṃ tānmānayanniva ..

2.9.11.42
prahasya dattvā prāgbhāgaṃ surānpucchamajigrahat .. 2.9.11.20 ..

2.9.11.46
mandaraṃ kāśyapeyāste carmikābaddhakacchakāḥ .. 22 ..
radiant with its ridges of gold, having bound their loincloths with leather straps.

they placed it in the ocean, shouting aloud in extreme eagerness.
2.9.11.49
dhāryamāṇopyanādhārastairadriratigauravāt ..
Though held by them, having no base, the mountain, because of its immense weight,
2.9.11.50
yayāvadhastalaṃ sadyastadāsaṃste'tivihvalāḥ .. 24 ..
sank immediately to the bottom; then they became utterly distraught.
2.9.11.51
tadā sa bhagavānsākṣātsarvathā bhaktakāryakṛt ..

2.9.11.52
stūyamānomarairadrimuddaghre kamaṭhākṛtiḥ .. 25 ..
praised by the immortals, assumed the form of a tortoise and lifted the mountain.

utthitaṃ tamavekṣyāśu sarve phullahṛdānanāḥ ..
Seeing it rise, the faces and hearts of all blossomed with joy,
2.9.11.54
babhūvuśca sthiraḥ so'bhūtkūrmapṛṣṭhetivistṛte .. 26 ..
and it became firmly fixed upon the vast back of the tortoise.
2.9.11.55
tato mamanthustarasā yāvadbalamapāṃnidhim ..
Then, with swift speed and to the best of their strength, they churned the ocean of waters,
2.9.11.56
śramaphūtkāravadanā devādayo'dayam .. 27 ..
the gods and others pitilessly, their faces hissing with exhaustion.
2.9.11.57
bhrāmyamāṇāttatastvadrerbahavonyapatandumāḥ ..

met their destruction by the hundreds in the Ocean of Milk.
2.9.11.61
sāṃvarttakamahāmeghasaṅghagarjjitavanmahān ..
Like the roaring of a mass of great clouds at the end of a cosmic age,
2.9.11.62
āsīnmaṃthananādaśca pratidhvanivivarddhitaḥ .. 2.9.11.30 ..
a mighty sound of churning arose, amplified by reverberations.
2.9.11.63
atyākarṣaṇakhinnāṅgavāsukarmmukhakṛtkṛtaiḥ ..
By the hissings from the mouth of Vāsuki, whose body was exhausted from being pulled excessively,
2.9.11.64
hataujaso'tikhinnāśca daityā niṅgālavadbabhuḥ .. 31 ..
the Daityas, deprived of vigor and utterly worn out, looked like glowing embers.
2.9.11.65
aviṣahyaṃ viṣāgniṃ ca marṣanti bahudhā muhuḥ ..
Enduring the unbearable fire of poison again and again in various ways,
2.9.11.66
lambante smāhirājasya sahasraṃ vadanānyadhaḥ .. 32 ..
the thousand faces of the serpent king hung downward.
2.9.11.67
dadhāra sahasā tāni bhagavanprerito vibhuḥ ..
Instantly, urged by the Lord, the all-pervading

saṃkarṣaṇo mahātejāḥ sahamāno viṣānalam .. 33 ..
Saṃkarṣaṇa of great splendor supported them, enduring the fire of venom.
2.9.11.69
sahasramekaṃ varṣāṇāṃ mathyamānātpayonidheḥ ..
After the ocean of milk had been churned for one thousand years,

tena dandahyamānāṅgāste tu cakruḥ palāyanam .. 35 ..
with their bodies burning from it, they took to flight.
2.9.11.73
tato brahmā prajeśāśca devāḥ sarvepyumāpatim ..
Then Brahmā, the lords of creatures, and all the gods praised the lord of Umā
2.9.11.74
prārthayaṃstasya pānārthaṃ stuvantaḥ stutibhirmune ..36..
with hymns, O sage, entreating him to drink it.
2.9.11.75
bhagavānatha taṃ prāha surāṇāmagrajo bhavān ..
Then the Lord said to him: "You are the firstborn among the gods;
2.9.11.76
bhavatītyagrajaṃ vārddhergṛhāṇedaṃ viṣaṃ śiva .. 37 ..
and this is the firstborn of the ocean: take this poison, O Śiva."
2.9.11.77
devānāṃ sa bhayaṃ dṛṣṭvā karuṇaścājñayā hareḥ ..
Seeing the fear of the gods, the compassionate one, by the command of Hari,

ākarṣadyogakalayā viṣaṃ pāṇitale'khilam .. 38 ..

serpents, scorpions, and other creatures, as well as certain herbs, took up.
