those two, Nara and Nārāyaṇa, went to the hermitage of Badarī.

There, the two primordial lords of the world, emaciated and covered in veins,
2.9.2.58
tepāte tejasā svena durnirīkṣyau surairapi .. 26 ..
performed austerity with their own splendor, difficult to behold even by the gods.
2.9.2.59
yasya prasādaṃ kurvāte sa vai tau draṣṭumarhati ..
Only he upon whom they bestow grace is truly able to see them;

they cannot be seen otherwise, even by the dwellers of that realm.
2.9.2.61
ekadā nārado yogī tābhyāmeva didṛkṣitaḥ ..

was also impelled within his heart by the Inner Self.

he saw from afar the two absorbed in the rituals of the foremost hermitage.
2.9.2.67
dṛṣṭvaiveśvaracaryāṃ tā tasya kautūhalaṃ tvabhūt ..
Having observed that conduct of the two lords, curiosity arose in him:
2.9.2.68
aho etau jagatpūjyāvīśvarau sarvadehinām ..
“Ah, these two are worshipped by the universe, the lords of all embodied beings;
2.9.2.69
etau hi paramaṃ brahma kā'nayorāhnikī kriyā .. 31 ..
they are indeed the supreme Brahman. What is their daily ritual?
2.9.2.70
pitarau sarvabhūtānāṃ devatānāṃ ca daivatam ..
They are the parents of all beings, and the divinity of the deities.
2.9.2.71
kāṃ devatāṃ tu yajataḥ pitṝnvaitau mahāmatī .. 32 ..
To what deity or ancestors do these two of great intellect offer sacrifice?”
2.9.2.72
iti saṃcintya manasā bhakto nārāyaṇasya saḥ ..
Pondering thus in his mind, that devotee of Nārāyaṇa
2.9.2.73
tatsamīpamupetyā'tha tasthau natvā kṛtāñjaliḥ .. 33 ..
approached them, bowed, and stood with folded hands.
2.9.2.74
kṛte daive ca pitrye ca tatastābhyāṃ nirīkṣitaḥ ..
When the rites to the gods and ancestors were finished, he was then noticed by the two,
2.9.2.75
pūjitaścaiva vidhinā śāstradṛṣṭena so'nagha .. 34 ..
and worshipped in accordance with the rule observed in the scriptures, O sinless one.
2.9.2.76
taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryyamapūrvaṃ vidhivistaram..
Seeing that great wonder, an unprecedented elaboration of the ritual rule,

upopaviṣṭaḥ suprīto nāradobhūcca vismitaḥ .. 35 ..
Nārada sat down beside them, highly pleased and filled with amazement.
2.9.2.78
nārāyaṇaṃ saṃnirīkṣya prayatenāntarātmanā ..
Looking upon Nārāyaṇa with a concentrated inner self,
2.9.2.79
namaskṛtya ca taṃ devamidaṃ vacanamabravīt .. 36 ..
and bowing to that god, he spoke these words: // 36
2.9.2.80
iti śrīskānde mahāpurāṇa ekāśītisāhasryāṃ saṃhitāyāṃ dvitīye vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍe śrīvāsudevamāhātmya ātyantikaśreyaḥsādhananirūpaṇe nārāyaṇanāradasamāgamo nāma dvitīyo'dhyāyaḥ .. 2 ..
Thus ends the second chapter, named 'The Meeting of Nārāyaṇa and Nārada', in the exposition of the means to ultimate welfare, in the Vāsudeva-māhātmya, in the second [section], the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, the Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses. // 2
