.. śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca ..
Glorious Nārāyaṇa said:
2.9.24.2
atha jñānasvarūpaṃ te vacmi sāṃkhyena niścitam ..
Now I shall tell you the nature of knowledge, as ascertained through Sāṃkhya.
2.9.24.3
kṣetrādi jñāyate yena tajjñānaṃ hi nirucyate .. 1 ..
That by which the field and so forth are known is indeed declared to be knowledge.
2.9.24.4
vāsudevaḥ paraṃ brahma bṛhatyakṣaradhāmani ..
Vāsudeva, the supreme Brahman in the vast imperishable abode,
2.9.24.5
ādāveko'dvitīyo'bhūnnirguṇo divyavigrahaḥ .. 2 ..
was in the beginning one without a second, devoid of qualities, having a divine form.
2.9.24.6
sa kāryamūlaprakṛtiḥ sakālā'kṣaratejasi ..
Root-matter, the cause of effects, accompanied by time, in the light of the imperishable,
2.9.24.7
prakāśe'rkasya rātrīva tirobhūtā tadā'bhavat .. 3 ..
was then hidden, like the night in the radiance of the sun.
2.9.24.8
sisṛkṣāthābhavattasya brahmāṇḍānāṃ yadā tadā ..
Then, when he had the desire to create the cosmic eggs,
2.9.24.9
sakālāvirbabhūvādau mahāmāyā tato hi sā .. 4 ..
she, the Great Māyā, first became manifest along with time.
2.9.24.10
tāṃ kālaśaktimādāya vāsudevo'kṣarātmanā ..
Taking up that power of time, through his imperishable nature,
2.9.24.11
sisṛkṣayaikṣata yadā sā cukṣobha tadaiva hi .. 5 ..
when Vāsudeva glanced with the desire to create, she was agitated at that very moment.
2.9.24.12
tasyāḥ pradhānapuruṣakoṭayo jajñire mune ..
From her, O sage, tens of millions of pradhānas and puruṣas were born;
2.9.24.13
yujyante sma pradhānaiste puruṣāścecchayā prabhoḥ .. 6 ..
and by the will of the Lord, those puruṣas were joined with the pradhānas.
2.9.24.14
pumāṃso nidadhurgarbhāṃsteṣu tebhyaśca jajñire ..
The puruṣas deposited seeds in them, and from them were born
2.9.24.15
brahmāṇḍāni hyasaṅkhyāni tatraikaṃ tu vivicyate .. 7 ..
countless cosmic eggs; among them, however, one is now analyzed.
2.9.24.16
ādau jajñe mahāṃstasmātpuṃso vīryāddhiraṇmayāt ..
First the mahat arose from that golden virility of the puruṣa;
2.9.24.17
ahaṅkārastatastasmādguṇāḥ sattvādayastrayaḥ .. 8 ..
from it, the egoity; from that, the three qualities, sattva and the rest.
2.9.24.18
tamasaḥ pañca tanmātrā mahābhūtāni jajñire ..
From tamas arose the five subtle elements and the gross elements;
2.9.24.19
daśendriyāṇi rajaso buddhyā saha mahānasuḥ ..9..
the ten senses from rajas, along with the intellect and the vital breath.
2.9.24.20
sattvādindriyadevāśca jāyante sma manastathā ..
From sattva arose the presiding deities of the senses, and likewise the mind.
2.9.24.21
sāmānyatastattvasaṃjñā ete devāḥ prakīrttitāḥ .. 2.9.24.10 ..
Generally, these deities are proclaimed as principles.
2.9.24.22
preritā vāsudevena svasvāṃśairaiśvaraṃ vapuḥ ..
Impelled by Vāsudeva, with their respective portions, they brought forth
2.9.24.23
ajījananvirāṭsañjñaṃ te carācarasaṃśrayam .. 11 ..
the divine body named the cosmic form, the shelter of the moving and unmoving.
2.9.24.24
sa ca vairājapuruṣaḥ svasṛṣṭāsvapsvaśeta yat ..
And since that Virāj person lay in the waters he himself created,
2.9.24.25
tena nārāyaṇa iti procyate nigamādibhiḥ .. .. 12 ..
he is called 'Nārāyaṇa' by the Vedic scriptures and the like.
2.9.24.26
tannābhipadmādbrahmāsīdrājaso'tha hṛdambujāt ..

2.9.24.27
jajñe viṣṇuḥ sattvaguṇo lalāṭāttāmaso haraḥ .. 13 ..
was born Viṣṇu, endowed with sattva; and from his forehead, Hara, endowed with tamas.
2.9.24.28
etebhya eva sthānebhyastisra āsaṃśca śaktayaḥ ..
From these very places also arose the three powers:
2.9.24.29
tatrāsīttāmasī durgā sāvitrī rājasī tathā ..
there arose Durgā of the nature of tamas, and Sāvitrī of the nature of rajas,
2.9.24.30
sāttvikī śrīśceti sarvā vastrālaṃkāraśobhitāḥ .. 14 ..
and Śrī of the nature of sattva—all adorned with garments and ornaments.
2.9.24.31
tā vairājājñayā trīṃśca brahmādīnpratipedire ..
By command of the Virāj, they went to the three, Brahmā and the others:
2.9.24.32
durgā rudraṃ ca sāvitrī brahmāṇaṃ viṣṇumantimā .. 15 ..
Durgā to Rudra, Sāvitrī to Brahmā, and the last one to Viṣṇu.
2.9.24.33
caṇḍikādyāśca durgāyā aṃśenāsansahasraśaḥ ..
From Durgā's portion arose thousands of goddesses, Caṇḍikā and others;
2.9.24.34
trayīmukhyāśca sāvitryāḥ śaktayoṃśena jajñire ..
from Sāvitrī's portion were born powers headed by the triple Veda;
2.9.24.35
dussahāpramukhāścāsannaṃśenaiva śriyo mune .. 16 ..
and from Śrī's portion alone arose those headed by Dussahā, O sage.
2.9.24.36
tatrādito yo brahmāsīdvairājanābhipadmataḥ ..
There, the Brahmā who had arisen first from the navel-lotus of the Virāj,
2.9.24.37
ekārṇave tadabjasthaḥ sa kaścidapi naikṣata .. 17 ..
seated on that lotus in the single ocean, saw no one at all.

visargabuddhimaprāpto nātmānaṃ ca viveda saḥ ..
Not having attained understanding of creation, nor knowing himself,
2.9.24.39
kohaṃ kuta iti dhyāyannadidṛkṣatkajāśrayam .. 18 ..
contemplating, 'Who am I? Whence came I?', he wished to see the support of the lotus.
2.9.24.40
nālaṃ praviśyā'dho yātustanmūlaṃ ca vicinvataḥ ..
Entering the stalk and descending, searching for its base,
2.9.24.41

2.9.24.44
tacchrutvā tatpravaktāramadṛṣṭvā ca sa sarvataḥ ..
Having heard that, and not seeing its speaker anywhere,
2.9.24.45
gurūpadiṣṭavattepe divyaṃ varṣasahasrakam ..21..
he performed austerity like one instructed by a guru for a divine thousand years.
2.9.24.46
padme tapasyate tasmai tapaḥ śuddhātmane tataḥ ..

where the three qualities belonging to pradhāna, rajas and the rest,
2.9.24.49
na bhavantyalpamapi yatkālamāyābhayaṃ na ca..23..
do not exist in the slightest, and where there is no fear of time or māyā.
2.9.24.50
sahoditārkāyutavadbhāsvare tatra tejasi ..
In that radiance resplendent like ten thousand suns risen together,
2.9.24.51
vāsudevaṃ dadarśā'sau ramyadivyāsitākṛtim..24..
he saw Vāsudeva, charming, of divine dark form,
2.9.24.52
caturbhujaṃ gadāpadmaśaṃkhacakradharaṃ vibhum ..
the four-armed, all-pervading Lord holding a mace, lotus, conch, and discus,
2.9.24.53
pītāmbaraṃ mahāratnakirīṭādivibhūṣaṇam.. 25 ..
clad in yellow garments, adorned with crowns and ornaments of precious gems,
2.9.24.54

attended by four-armed attendants, Nanda, Garuḍa, and others,
2.9.24.55
siddhibhiścāṣṭabhiḥ ṣaḍbhirbaddhāñjalipuṭairbhagaiḥ ..26..
and by the eight perfections and the six divine opulences with hands folded in reverence,
2.9.24.56
siṃhāsane śriyā sākamupaviṣṭaṃ tamīśvaram ..
that Lord seated upon a throne together with Śrī.
2.9.24.57
praṇamya prāñjalistasthau viriñco hṛṣṭamānasaḥ ..27..

varaṃ varaya mattastvaṃ svābhīṣṭaṃ yatpriyosi me .. 28 ..
Choose a boon of your desire from me, since you are dear to me.'
2.9.24.60
ityuktastena taṃ jānaṃstapasi prerakaṃ prabhum ..
Addressed thus by him, Brahmā, knowing that Lord to be the impeller of his austerity,
2.9.24.61
svaṃ ca viśvasṛjaṃ brahmā yayāce'bhimataṃ varam .. 29 ..
and himself to be the creator of the universe, asked for his desired boon:
2.9.24.62
prajāvisargaśaktiṃ me dehi tubhyaṃ namaḥ prabho ..
'Grant me the power to produce creatures. Homage to you, O Lord!
2.9.24.63
tatrāpi ca na baddhyeyaṃ yathā kuru tathā kṛpām .. 2.9.24.30 ..
And show such mercy that I may not be bound even in that [task].'
2.9.24.64
tatastaṃ bhagavānūce setsyate te manorathaḥ ..
Then the Blessed Lord said to him: 'Your desire will be accomplished.
2.9.24.65
vairājena mayātmaikyaṃ bhāvayitvā samādhinā ..
Meditating through absorption on identity with me, the cosmic person (Virāj),
2.9.24.66
prajāḥ sṛjā'tha svāsādhye kārye smaryohamiṣṭadaḥ .. 31..
create offspring. Then, whenever a task cannot be achieved by you, remember me, the giver of desires.'
2.9.24.67
ityuktvāntardadhe viṣṇurbrahmāpyekasamādhinā ..
Having spoken thus, Viṣṇu vanished. Brahmā too, through concentrated absorption,
2.9.24.68
vairājenā'tha lokānprāglīnānsarvānsva aikṣata .. 32 ..
in his cosmic form beheld within himself all the worlds formerly dissolved.

purified by austerity and devotion, the primordial sages, the four Sanas.
2.9.24.73
prajāḥ sṛjata cetyūce tāṃstadā te tu tadvacaḥ ..

he remains just the same—taintless—even when immanent [in creation].
