the four-footed dharma, and not in its destruction through violence. // 15
2.9.6.34
rajastamodoṣavaśāttathāpyasurapā nṛpāḥ ..

due to dullness of mind regarding statements such as ‘one should sacrifice with a fit goat (aja),’
2.9.6.36
chāgādimarthaṃ bubudhurvrīhyādiṃ tu na te viduḥ .. 16 ..
understood the meaning to be a he-goat and the like; but they did not know [it means] rice grains and the like. // 16
2.9.6.37
sāttvikānāṃ tu yuṣmākaṃ vedasyārtho yathā sthitaḥ ..

For your deity, being sāttvika, is Viṣṇu himself, the lord of Ramā;

therefore, qualification belongs to the non-violent sacrifice for his pleasure. // 19
2.9.6.43
pratyakṣapaśumālabhya yajñasyācaraṇaṃ tu yat ..
Performing a sacrifice by actually slaughtering a visible animal,
2.9.6.44
dharmaḥ sa viparīto vai yuṣmākaṃ surasattamāḥ .. 2.9.6.20 ..
that, O best of gods, is truly an inverted dharma for you. // 2.9.6.20
2.9.6.45
rajastamoguṇavaśādāsurīṃ saṃpadaṃ śritāḥ ..
Under the influence of the qualities of rajas and tamas, having resorted to demonic wealth,

From association with them alone has this perversion of mind now arisen
2.9.6.48
jātastenedṛśaṃ karma prārabdhamiti niścitam .. 22 ..
in you; thus has such an action been commenced: this is certain. // 22
2.9.6.49
rājasānāṃ tāmasānāmāsurāṇāṃ tathā nṛṇām ..
For rājasika, tāmasika, and demonic men,
2.9.6.50
yathāguṇaṃ bhairavādyā upāsyāḥ santi devatāḥ .. 23 ..
deities such as Bhairava are to be worshipped according to their qualities. // 23
2.9.6.51
svaguṇānuguṇātmīyadevatātuṣṭaye bhuvi ..
For the pleasure of their own deity, corresponding to their own quality,
2.9.6.52
hiṃsrayajñavidhānaṃ yatteṣāmevocitaṃ hi tat .. 24 ..
the rule of violent sacrifice on earth is indeed proper only for them. // 24
2.9.6.53
tatrāpi viṣṇubhaktā ye daityarakṣonarādayaḥ ..
Even among them, those Daityas, Rākṣasas, men, and others who are devoted to Viṣṇu—
2.9.6.54
teṣāmapyucito nāsti hiṃsrayajñaḥ kutastu vaḥ .. 25 ..
even for them a violent sacrifice is not proper; how much less then for you? // 25
2.9.6.55
yajñaśeṣo hi sarveṣāṃ yajñakarmānutiṣṭhatām ..
For the remnant of the sacrifice for all who perform sacrificial action
2.9.6.56
anujñāto bhakṣaṇārthaṃ nigamenaiva vartate .. 26 ..
is permitted by the scripture itself for eating. // 26
2.9.6.57
sāttvikānāṃ devatānāṃ surāmāṃsāśanaṃ kvacit ..
The consumption of liquor and meat by sāttvika deities anywhere
2.9.6.58
asmābhistvīkṣitaṃ naiva na śrutaṃ ca satāṃ mukhāt .. 27 ..
has never been seen by us, nor heard from the mouth of the virtuous. // 27
2.9.6.59
tasmādvrīhibhirevāsau yajñaḥ kṣīreṇa sarpiṣā ..
Therefore, this sacrifice must be performed with rice grains, milk, clarified butter,
2.9.6.60
medhyairannarasaiścā'nyaiḥ kāryo na paśuhiṃsayā .. 28 ..
and other fit food essences, and not by violence to animals. // 28
2.9.6.61
tatrāpi bījairyaṣṭavyamajasaṃjñāmupāgataiḥ ..
Even there, one should sacrifice with seeds known by the name aja,
2.9.6.62
trivarṣakālamuṣitairnna yeṣāṃ punarudgamaḥ .. 29 ..
which have remained for a period of three years and do not sprout again. // 29
2.9.6.63
adrohaścāyalobhaśca damo bhūtadayā tapaḥ ..
Absence of malice, non-greed, self-restraint, compassion toward living beings, austerity,
2.9.6.64
brahmacaryaṃ tathā satyamadambhaśca kṣamā dhṛtiḥ .. 2.9.6.30 ..
celibacy, truthfulness, absence of deceit, forbearance, and fortitude— // 2.9.6.30
2.9.6.65
sanātanasya dharmasya rūpametadudīritam ..
this has been proclaimed as the form of the eternal dharma;
2.9.6.66
tadatikramya yo varteddharmaghnaḥ sa patatyadhaḥ .. 31 ..
he who acts transgressing that, a destroyer of dharma, falls down. // 31
2.9.6.67
.. skanda uvāca ..
Skanda said:
2.9.6.68
itthaṃ vedarahasyajñairmahāmunibhirādarāt ..
Though thus instructed respectfully by the great sages who knew the secret of the Veda
2.9.6.69
bodhitā api sannītyā svapratijñāvighātataḥ ..
with correct reasoning, because it would disrupt their own pledge,
2.9.6.70
tadvākyaṃ jagṛhurnaiva tatprāmāṇyavidopi te .. 32 ..
they did not accept their word at all, even though they knew its authoritative nature. // 32
2.9.6.71

Then, because of transgressing the great, pride, anger, arrogance, and the rest,

While they argued, ‘An aja is a goat, not seeds,’ and the like,

In which no actual slaughter of animals ever took place in any [rite],

nor was there any substitute for sacrificial gifts, nor worship of gods who were not directly present. (38)
2.9.6.83
ahiṃsādharmarakṣābhyāṃ khyātosau sarvato nṛpaḥ ..
Famous everywhere through non-violence and the protection of righteousness was that king,
2.9.6.84
agraṇīrviṣṇubhaktānāmekapatnīmahāvrataḥ .. 39 ..
the foremost among the devotees of Viṣṇu, observing the great vow of having only one wife. (39)
2.9.6.85
īdṛśo dhārmikavaraḥ satyasandhaśca vedavit ..
Such a best of the righteous, true to his word and knower of the Veda—
2.9.6.86
kathaṃcinnānyathā brūyādvākyameṣa mahānvasuḥ .. 2.9.6.40 ..
this great Vasu would by no means speak a contrary word.” (2.9.6.40)
2.9.6.87
evaṃ te saṃvidaṃ kṛtvā vibudhā ṛṣayastathā ..
Having thus made an agreement, the gods and the seers,
2.9.6.88
apṛcchansahasā'bhyetya vasuṃ rājānamutsukāḥ .. 41 ..
eagerly coming at once, questioned King Vasu. (41)
2.9.6.89
devamaharṣaya ūcuḥ ..
The gods and great seers said:
2.9.6.90
bho rājankena yaṣṭavyaṃ paśunā hosvidauṣadhaiḥ ..
“O King! With what should one sacrifice? With an animal, or indeed with herbs?
2.9.6.91

“Whose view is what among you? Speak the truth attentively.” (43)

dhānyairyaṣṭavyamityeva pakṣo'smākaṃ narādhipa ..
“‘One must sacrifice with grains’—this alone is our view, O ruler of men.
2.9.6.97
devānāṃ tu paśuḥ pakṣo mataṃ rājanvadātmanaḥ .. 44 ..
The view of the gods, however, is an animal. Speak your own opinion, O King.” (44)

Skanda said:
2.9.6.99
devānāṃ tu mataṃ jñātvā vasustatpakṣasaṃśrayāt ..
Knowing the opinion of the gods, Vasu, by resorting to their side,
2.9.6.100

then spoke these words: “One should sacrifice with an animal such as a goat.” (45)
2.9.6.101

Having thus resorted to the untrue side of the proud [gods],
2.9.6.102
