as they praised themselves in rivalry over a certain cause:
3.1.14.55
ahaṃ karttā na matto'nyaḥ karttāsti jagatītale .. .. 26 ..

3.1.14.59
tayorgarvavināśāya prabodhārthaṃ ca devayoḥ .. 28 ..

Seeing that liṅga, amazed, Brahmā and Viṣṇu mutually (29)
3.1.14.62
samayaṃ cakraturviprā devānāṃ sannidhau purā ..
made an agreement, O brahmins, in the presence of the gods in ancient times:
3.1.14.63
anādyaṃtaṃ mahāliṃgaṃ yadetaddṛśyate puraḥ .. 3.1.14.30 ..
“This great liṅga without beginning or end that is seen before us, (30)
3.1.14.64
anaṃtādityasaṃkā śamanaṃtāgnisamaprabham ..
resembling endless suns, equal in radiance to endless fire—
3.1.14.65
āvayorasya liṃgasya yoṃ'tamādiṃ ca drakṣyati .. 31 ..
whichever of the two of us shall see the top and bottom of this liṅga, (31)
3.1.14.66
sa bhavedadhiko loke lokakartā ca sa prabhuḥ ..

3.1.14.68
gaveṣaṇāya mūlasya tvamadhastāddhare vraja ..
go down below, O Hari, to search for its base!”
3.1.14.69
iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā tathe tyāha ramāpatiḥ .. 33 ..
Hearing his words, the husband of Ramā said: “So be it.” (33)
3.1.14.70
evaṃ tau samayaṃ kṛtvā mārgaṇāya vinirgatau ..
Having thus made the agreement, the two departed to search.
3.1.14.71
viṣṇurvarāharūpeṇa gato'dhastādgaveṣitum .. 34 ..
Viṣṇu, in the form of a boar, went below to search; (34)
3.1.14.72
haṃsatāṃ bhāratījāniḥ svīkṛtyopari niryayau ..
the husband of Bhāratī, assuming the nature of a swan, flew upward.
3.1.14.73
adho lokānvicityātho viṣṇurvarṣagaṇānbahūn ..
Then Viṣṇu, having searched the lower worlds for many groups of years,
3.1.14.74
yathāsthānaṃ samāgatya vabhāṣe devasannidhau .. 35 ..
returned to the place and spoke in the presence of the gods. (35)
3.1.14.75
.. viṣṇuruvāca .. ..
Viṣṇu said:
3.1.14.76
ahaṃ liṃgasya nādrākṣamādimasyeti satyavāk.. 36 ..
“I did not see the beginning of this liṅga,” speaking the truth. (36)
3.1.14.77
ūrdhvaṃ gaveṣayitvātha brahmāpyāgacchadatra saḥ ..
Having searched upward, Brahmā also came there;
3.1.14.78
āgatya ca vacaḥ prāha chadmanā caturānanaḥ .. .. 37 ..
and having arrived, the four-faced one uttered a deceitful statement: (37)
3.1.14.79
.. brahmovāca .. ..
Brahmā said:
3.1.14.80
ahamadrākṣamasyāṃtaṃ liṃgasyeti mṛṣā punaḥ ..
“I saw the end of this liṅga”—falsely indeed.
3.1.14.81
tayostadvacanaṃ śrutvā vrahmaviṣṇvormaheśvaraḥ ..
Hearing that statement of the two, Brahmā and Viṣṇu, Maheśvara
3.1.14.82
mithyāvādinamāhedaṃ prahasya caturānanam .. 38 ..
laughed and spoke thus to the four-faced one who spoke falsely: (38)
3.1.14.83
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..
Īśvara said:
3.1.14.84
asatyaṃ yadavocastvaṃ caturānana matpuraḥ .. 39 ..
“Because you spoke an untruth in front of me, O four-faced one, (39)
3.1.14.85
tasmātpūjā na te bhūyālloke sarvatra sarvadā ..
therefore let there be no worship of you in the world, anywhere, at any time!”
3.1.14.86
atha viṣṇuṃ punaḥ prāha bhagavānparameśvaraḥ .. 3.1.14.40 ..
Then the blessed Parameśvara spoke again to Viṣṇu: (40)
3.1.14.87
yasmātsatyamavocastvaṃ kamalāyāḥ pate hare ..
"Because you spoke the truth, O Hari, lord of Kamalā,
3.1.14.88
tasmātte matsamā pūjā bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ .. 41 ..
therefore your worship shall be equal to mine, there is no doubt."
3.1.14.89
tato brahmā viṣaṇṇaḥ sañchaṃkaraṃ pratyabhāṣata ..
Then Brahmā, dejected, spoke to Śaṃkara:
3.1.14.90
svāminmamāparādhaṃ tvaṃ kṣamasva karuṇānidhe .. 42 ..
"O Lord, treasure-house of compassion, forgive my offense!
3.1.14.91
ekoparādhaḥ kṣaṃtavyaḥ svāmi bhirjagadīśvaraiḥ ..
One offense ought to be forgiven by masters, lords of the universe."
3.1.14.92
tato maheśvaro'vādīdbrahmāṇaṃ parisāṃtvayan .. 43 ..
Then Maheśvara spoke, consoling Brahmā:
3.1.14.93
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..
Īśvara said:
3.1.14.94
na mithyāvacanaṃ me syādbrahmanvakṣyāmi te śṛṇu ..
"My words cannot be false, O Brahmā; listen to what I will tell you:
3.1.14.95
gaccha tvaṃ sahasā vatsa gandhamādanaparvatam ..44..
Go quickly, my child, to Mount Gandhamādana;
3.1.14.96
tatra kratūnkuruṣva tvaṃ mithyādoṣapraśāṃtaye ..
perform sacrifices there for the pacification of the fault of lying.
3.1.14.97
tato vidhūtapāpastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi na saṃśayaḥ .. ..45..
Then, your sin washed away, you will be [restored], there is no doubt.
3.1.14.98
tena śrauteṣu te brahmansmārteṣvapi ca karmasu ..
By virtue of that, O Brahmā, in Vedic and also in domestic rites,
3.1.14.99
pūjā bhaviṣyati sadā na pūjā pratimāsu te..46..
there will always be worship for you, but there will be no worship for you in images."
3.1.14.100
ityuktvā bhagavānīśastatraivāṃtaradhīyata ..
Having spoken thus, the divine Lord disappeared right there.
3.1.14.101
tato brahmā yayau viprā gaṃdhamādanaparvatam .. 47 ..
Then Brahmā went to Mount Gandhamādana, O brahmins,
3.1.14.102
īje ca kratukartāraṃ kratubhiḥ pārvatīpatim ..
and with sacrifices worshipped the creator of sacrifices, the lord of Pārvatī,
3.1.14.103
aṣṭāśītisahasrāṇi varṣāṇi munipuṃgavāḥ .. 48 ..
for eighty-eight thousand years, O best of sages,
3.1.14.104
pauṃḍarīkādibhiḥ sarvairadhvarairbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ..
with all the sacrifices such as the Pauṇḍarīka, with bountiful priestly fees;
3.1.14.105
indrādisarvadevānāṃ sannidhāvayajacchivam ..
in the presence of Indra and all the gods, he sacrificed to Śiva.
3.1.14.106
tena tuṣṭobhavacchaṃbhurvaramasmai pradattavān .. 49 ..
Gratified by this, Śambhu granted him a boon:
3.1.14.107
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..
Īśvara said:
3.1.14.108
mithyoktidoṣaste naṣṭaḥ kṛtairetairmakhairiha .. 3.1.14.50 ..
"Your fault of false speech has been destroyed here by performing these sacrifices;
3.1.14.109
caturānana te pūjā śrautasmārteṣu karmasu ..
O four-faced one, in Vedic and domestic rites,
3.1.14.110
bhaviṣyatyamalā brahmanna pūjā pratimāsu te .. 51 ..

brahmakuṇḍasamudbhūtaṃ lalāṭe bhasma dhārayan ..
