Glorious Sūta said: / Having performed a ritual ablution with a concentrated mind in the highly sacred Brahmakuṇḍa, / a man should then go to the pool of Hanūmat, O best of brahmins. / Formerly, when the demons had been slain, when the task of battle was over, / and Rāma and the others had returned to Mount Gandhamādana, / for the benefit of all the worlds, Hanūmat, the son of the Wind, / created the best of all sacred fords bearing his own name. / Knowing the glory of which it is served by Rudra himself, / equal to that sacred ford there has never been, nor will there ever be. / Bathing in which men go to the eternal world of Śiva; / in which highly sacred ford, which destroys great sins, / created by the son of the Wind for the benefit of all worlds, / all the hells became utterly empty for a long time indeed. / Śaṃkara knows the glory of that sacred ford, or perhaps he does not! / Where formerly a king of the Kekaya lineage named Dharmasakha, / having bathed with devotion, obtained one hundred sons. / The seers said: / O Sūta, you ought to tell today the life-story of Dharmasakha, / who, having bathed in the sacred ford of Hanūmatkuṇḍa, obtained one hundred sons. / Glorious Sūta said: / Listen, O seers, to the deeds of that protector of the earth; / today I will relate in brief [the story] of Dharmasakha. / Formerly there was a king named Dharmasakha who had conquered his enemies, was exceedingly righteous, / virtuous, and devoted to the protection of his subjects. / He had one hundred wives, O brahmins, to whom their husband was a deity. / Ruling the earth along with its mountains, forests, and groves, / the king did not obtain in those wives a son to continue his lineage. / Then, for the sake of a son, that protector of the earth made many efforts;

the ruler of the earth gave food with abundant soup and rich in grain.
3.1.15.5_6
pitṝnuddiśya ca śrāddhamakarodvidhipūrvakam ..
He also performed ancestral rites according to rule, directed towards the ancestors;
3.1.15.5_7
saṃtānadāyino maṃtrāñjajāpa niyatedriyaḥ .. 16 ..
with senses restrained, he muttered mantras that bestow offspring.
3.1.15.5_8
evamādīnbahūndharmānputrārthaṃ kṛtavānnṛpaḥ ..
The king performed many such righteous acts for the sake of a son.
3.1.15.5_9
putramuddiśya satataṃ kurvandharmānanuttamān .. 17 ..
Constantly performing unmatched righteous acts with a view toward [getting] a son,
3.1.15.5_10
rājā dīrgheṇa kālena vṛddhatāṃ pratyapadyata ..
with the passage of a long time, the king reached old age.
3.1.15.5_11
kadācittasya vṛddhasya yatamānasya bhūpateḥ .. 18 ..
Once, as that aged king was thus striving,
3.1.15.5_12
putrassucaṃdranāmābhūjjyeṣṭhapatnyāṃ manoramaḥ ..
a delightful son named Sucandra was born to his eldest wife.
3.1.15.5_13
jātaṃ putraṃ jananyastāḥ sarvā vaiṣamyavarjitāḥ .. 19 ..
When the son was born, all the mothers, free from jealousy,
3.1.15.5_14
samaṃ saṃvarddhayāmāsuḥ kṣīrādibhiranuttamāḥ ..
noble as they were, raised him equally with milk and other foods.
3.1.15.5_15
rājñaśca sarvamātṝṇāṃ paurāṇāmmaṃtriṇāṃ tathā .. 3.1.15.20 ..
And to the king, to all the mothers, to the citizens, and to the ministers,
3.1.15.5_16
manonayanasaṃtoṣajanako'yaṃ suto'bhavat ..
this son became the cause of joy to their minds and eyes.
3.1.15.5_17
lālayānaḥ sutaṃ rājā mudaṃ lebhe parātparām..21..
Fondling his son, the king attained the highest joy.
3.1.15.5_18
āṃdolikāśayānasya sūnostasya kadācana ..
Once, while that son was lying in a cradle,
3.1.15.5_19
vṛściko'kuṭṭayatpāde pucchenodyadviṣāgninā .. 22 ..

From the scorpion's sting, the child cried bitterly.
3.1.15.5_21
tatastanmātaraḥ sarvāḥ prārudañcchokakātarāḥ .. 23 ..
Then all his mothers began to weep, overcome with grief.
3.1.15.5_22
parivāryātmajaṃ viprāḥ sadhvaniḥ saṃkulo'bhavat ..
Surrounding the boy, O brahmins, a tumultuous uproar arose.
3.1.15.5_23
ārtadhvaniṃ sa śuśrāva rājā dharmasakhastadā .. 24 ..
King Dharmasakha then heard that cry of distress,
3.1.15.5_24
upaviṣṭaḥ sabhāmadhye sahāmātyapurohitaḥ ..
as he sat in the midst of the assembly with his ministers and royal priest.
3.1.15.5_25
atha prātiṣṭhipadrājā sauvidallaṃ sa veditum .. 25 ..
Then the king dispatched a chamberlain to find out.
3.1.15.5_26
antaḥpurabahirdvāraṃ sauvidallaḥ sametya saḥ ..
That chamberlain, going up to the outer gate of the inner apartments,
3.1.15.5_27
ṣaṃḍhavṛddhānsamāhūya vākyametadabhāṣata .. 26 ..
summoned the elderly eunuchs and spoke these words:
3.1.15.5_28
ṣaṃḍhāḥ kimarthamadhunā rudatyantaḥpura striyaḥ ..
“O eunuchs, why are the women of the inner apartments weeping now?
3.1.15.5_29
tatparijñāyatāṃ tatra gatvā rodanakāraṇam .. 27 ..
Go there and find out the cause of their crying.
3.1.15.5_30
etadarthaṃ hi māṃ rājā prerayāmāsa saṃsadi ..
For this purpose the king sent me from the royal assembly.”
3.1.15.5_31
ityuktāstu parijñāya nidānaṃ rodanasya te .. 28 ..
Addressed thus, they ascertained the cause of the crying,
3.1.15.5_32
nirgamyāṃtaḥpurāttasmai yathāvṛttaṃ nyavedayat ..
came out of the inner apartments, and reported what had happened to him.
3.1.15.5_33
sa ṣaṃḍhakavacaḥ śrutvā sauvidallaḥ sabhāṃ gataḥ .. 29 ..
Having heard the words of the eunuchs, the chamberlain went to the assembly
3.1.15.5_34
rājñe nivedayāmāsa putraṃ vṛścikapīḍitam ..
and reported to the king that his son had been stung by a scorpion.
3.1.15.5_35
tato dharmasakho rājā śrutvā vṛttāṃtamīdṛśam .. 3.1.15.30 ..
Then King Dharmasakha, having heard such an account,
3.1.15.5_36
tvaramāṇaḥ samutthāya sāmātyaḥ sapurohitaḥ ..
rose up in haste together with his ministers and priest.
3.1.15.5_37
praviśyāṃtaḥpuraṃ sārddhaṃ māṃtrikairviṣahā ribhiḥ .. 31 ..
Entering the inner apartments along with sorcerers skilled in removing poison,
3.1.15.5_38
cikitsayāmāsa sutamauṣadhādyairanekaśaḥ ..
he had his son treated repeatedly with medicines and the like.
3.1.15.5_39
jātasvāsthyaṃ tataḥ putraṃ lālayitvā sa bhūpatiḥ .. 32 ..
Then, having fondled his son once he regained health,
3.1.15.5_40
mānayitvā ca maṃtrajñānratnakāṃ canamauktikaiḥ ..
and having honored the knowers of mantras with gems, gold, and pearls,
3.1.15.5_41
niṣkramyāṃtaḥpurādrājā bhṛśaṃ ciṃtāsamākulaḥ .. 33 ..
the king came out of the inner apartments, deeply agitated by anxiety,
3.1.15.5_42
ṛtvikpurohitāmātyaistāṃ sabhāṃ sanupāviśat ..
and sat down in that assembly together with his officiating priests, royal priest, and ministers.
3.1.15.5_43
tatra dharmasakho rājā samāsīno varāsane ..
There King Dharmasakha, seated upon an excellent throne,
3.1.15.5_44
uvācedaṃ vaco yuktamṛtvijaḥ sapurohitān .. 34 ..
addressed these fitting words to the officiating priests and the royal priest:
3.1.15.5_45
.. dharmasakha uvāca .. ..
Dharmasakha said:
3.1.15.5_46
duḥkhāyaivaikaputratvaṃ bhavati brāhmaṇo ttamāḥ .. 35 ..
“Having only one son leads only to grief, O best of brahmins!
3.1.15.5_47
ekaputratvato tṛṇāṃ varā caiva hyaputratā ..
Childlessness is surely better for men than having an only son.
3.1.15.5_48
nityaṃ vyapāyayuktatvādvarameva hyaputratā ..
Because of constantly being subject to danger, childlessness is indeed better.
3.1.15.5_49
ahaṃ bhāryāśataṃ viprā udavoḍha viciṃtya tu .. 36 ..
Having reflected on this, O brahmins, I married a hundred wives.
3.1.15.5_50
vayaśca samatikrāṃtaṃ sapatnīkasya me dvijāḥ ..
And old age has overtaken me along with my wives, O twice-born.
3.1.15.5_51
prāṇā mama ca bhāryāṇāmasminputre vyavasthitāḥ .. 37 ..
My life-breaths and those of my wives are anchored in this one son.
3.1.15.5_52
tannāśe mama bhāryāṇāṃ sarvāsāṃ ca mṛtirdhruvā ..
Upon his death, the death of all my wives is certain.
3.1.15.5_53
mamāpi prāṇanāśaḥ syādekaputrasya māraṇe .. 38 ..
My own life would also end upon the death of this only son.
3.1.15.5_54
ato me bahuputratvaṃ kenopāyena vai bhavet ..
Therefore, by what means can I have many sons?
3.1.15.5_55
tamupāyaṃ mama brūta brāhmaṇā vedavi ttamāḥ .. 39 ..
Tell me that means, O brahmins, foremost among knowers of the Veda!
3.1.15.5_56
ekaikaḥ śatabhāryāsu putro me syādyathā guṇī ..
So that I may have a virtuous son with each of my hundred wives,
3.1.15.5_57
tatkarma vrata yūyaṃ tu śāstramālokya dharmataḥ .. 3.1.15.40 ..
tell me that rite, looking into the sacred texts according to dharma.
3.1.15.5_58
mahatā laghunā vāpi karmaṇā duṣkareṇa vā ..
Whether by a great rite or a small one, or even by one difficult to perform,
3.1.15.5_59
phalaṃ yadyapi tatsādhyaṃ kariṣye'haṃ na saṃśayaḥ .. 41 ..
if that fruit is achievable, I will perform it without doubt.
3.1.15.5_60
yuṣmābhiruditaṃ karma kariṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ ..
I will perform the rite prescribed by you, there is no doubt.
3.1.15.5_61
kṛtameva hi tadvitta śape'haṃ sukṛtairmama .. 42 ..
Know it as already done; I swear by my merits!
3.1.15.5_62
asti cedīdṛśaṃ karma yena putraśataṃ bhavet ..
If there is such a rite by which a hundred sons may be obtained,
3.1.15.5_63
tatkarma kutra kartavyaṃ mayeti vadatādhunā .. 43 ..
tell me now where that rite must be performed by me.”
3.1.15.5_64
iti pṛṣṭāstadā rājñā ṛtvijaḥ sapurohitāḥ ..
Questioned thus at that time by the king, the officiating priests with the royal priest,
3.1.15.5_65
saṃbhūya sarve rājānamidamūcuḥ suniścitam .. 44 ..
having assembled together, spoke this to the king with complete certainty:
3.1.15.5_66
.. ṛtvija ūcuḥ .. ..
The officiating priests said:
3.1.15.5_67
asti rājanpravakṣyāmo yena putraśataṃ tava ..
“There is [such a means], O king; we will tell you how a hundred sons
3.1.15.5_68
bhaveddharmeṇa mahatā śatabhāryāsu kaikaya .. 45 ..
may be born to you from your hundred wives through a great dharma, O king of the Kaikayas.
3.1.15.5_69
asti kaścinmahāpuṇyo gandhamādanaparvataḥ ..
There is a most holy mountain named Gandhamādana,
3.1.15.5_70
dakṣiṇāṃbudhimadhye yaḥ seturūpeṇa vartate .. 46 ..
which exists in the form of a bridge in the midst of the southern ocean.
3.1.15.5_71
siddhacāraṇagaṃdharvadevarṣigaṇasaṃkulaḥ ..
crowded with hosts of Siddhas, Cāraṇas, Gandharvas, and celestial seers,
3.1.15.5_72
darśanātsparśanānnṛṇāṃ mahāpātakanāśanaḥ .. 47 ..
destroying great sins of men merely by being seen or touched.
3.1.15.5_73
tatrāsti hanumatkuṃḍamiti lokeṣu viśrutam ..
There is a pool there known in the worlds as Hanumatkuṇḍa,
3.1.15.5_74
mahāduḥkhapraśamanaṃ svargamokṣaphalapradam.. 48 ..
which relieves great sorrow and grants the fruits of heaven and liberation,
3.1.15.5_75
narakakleśaśamanaṃ tathā dāridryamocanam ..
which calms the torments of hell, relieves poverty likewise,
3.1.15.5_76
putrapradamaputrāṇāmastrīṇāṃ strīpadaṃ nṛṇām .. 49 ..
gives sons to the sonless, and gives wives to wifeless men.
3.1.15.5_77
tatra tvaṃ prayataḥ snātvā sarvābhīṣṭapradāyinīm..
There, having bathed with self-restraint, that which grants all desired things,
3.1.15.5_78
putrīyeṣṭiṃ ca tattīre kuruṣva susamāhitaḥ ..3.1.15.50 ..
perform with a concentrated mind the sacrifice for getting sons on its bank.
3.1.15.5_79
tena te śatabhāryāsu pratyekaṃ tanayo nṛpa ..
By that, O king, each among your one hundred wives
3.1.15.5_80
ekaikastu bhavecchīghraṃ mā kuru ṣvātra saṃśayam.. 51 ..
will swiftly bear one son; do not have any doubt in this matter."
3.1.15.5_81
tathokto nṛpatirvipraiṛtvikbhiḥ sapurohitaiḥ ..
Thus addressed by the brahmins, the officiating priests, together with the family priest,
3.1.15.5_82
tatkṣaṇenaiva ṛtvikbhirbhāryābhiśca purodhasā .. 52 ..
the king that very moment, [accompanied] by the officiating priests, his wives, and the family priest,
3.1.15.5_83
vṛtomātyaiśca bhṛtyaiśca yajñasaṃbhārasaṃyutaḥ ..
surrounded by ministers and attendants, equipped with the provisions for the sacrifice,
3.1.15.5_84
prayayau dakṣiṇāṃbhodhau gandhamādanaparvatam .. 53 ..
set out for Mount Gandhamādana in the southern ocean.
3.1.15.5_85
hanumatkuṃḍamāsādya tatra sasnau sasainikaḥ ..
Having reached Hanumatkuṇḍa, he bathed there together with his army;
3.1.15.5_86
māsamātraṃ sa tattīre nyavasa tsnānamācaran .. 54 ..
he dwelt on its bank for just a month, regularly performing ritual ablutions.
3.1.15.5_87
tato vasaṃte saṃprāpte caitramāsi nṛpottamaḥ ..
Then, when spring arrived in the month of Caitra, that best of kings,
3.1.15.5_88
iṣṭimārabdhavāṃstatra putrīyāṃ sapurohitaḥ .. 55 ..
accompanied by his family priest, began the sacrifice for sons there.
3.1.15.5_89
samyakkarmāṇi cakruste ṛtvijaḥ sapurodhasaḥ ..
Those officiating priests along with the family priest properly performed the rites
3.1.15.5_90
sapatnīkasya rājarṣestathādharmasakhasya tu .. 56 ..
for the royal seer Dharmasakha together with his wives.
3.1.15.5_91
iṣṭau tasya samāptāyāṃ hanūmatkuṃḍatīrataḥ ..
When his sacrifice was completed on the bank of Hanūmatkuṇḍa,
3.1.15.5_92
purohito hutocchiṣṭaṃ prāśa yadrājayoṣitaḥ .. 57 ..
the family priest made the king’s wives consume the remnants of the oblation.
3.1.15.5_93
tato dharmasakho rājā hanūmatkuṃḍavāriṣu ..
Then King Dharmasakha, in the waters of Hanūmatkuṇḍa,
3.1.15.5_94
samyakcakārāvabhṛthasnānaṃ bhāryāśatānvitaḥ .. 58 ..
properly performed the concluding ceremonial bath accompanied by his hundred wives.
3.1.15.5_95
ṛtvikbhyo dakṣiṇāḥ prādādasaṃkhyātāstu bhūriśaḥ ..
He gave innumerable and abundant gifts to the officiating priests,
3.1.15.5_96
grāmāṃśca pradadau rājā bāhmaṇebhyo dvijottamāḥ .. 59 ..
and the king granted villages to the brahmins, O best of the twice-born.
3.1.15.5_97
sāmātyaḥ saparīvāraḥ sapatnīkaḥ sa dhārmmikaḥ ..
Accompanied by his ministers, his retinue, and his wives, that righteous
3.1.15.5_98
rājā tato nivavṛte purīṃ svāṃ prati naṃditaḥ .. 3.1.15.60 ..
king returned, rejoiced, back to his own city.
3.1.15.5_99
tataḥ katipaye kāle gate daśamamāmi vai ..
Then, after some time had passed, indeed in the tenth month,
3.1.15.5_100
śataṃ bhāryāḥ śataṃ putrānsuṣuvurguṇavattarān .. 61 ..
the hundred wives gave birth to one hundred most virtuous sons.
3.1.15.5_101
atha prītamanā rājā vīro dharmasakho mahān ..
Then with a delighted heart, the heroic and great king Dharmasakha,
3.1.15.5_102
snātaḥ śuddhaśca saṃkalpya jātakarmākarottadā..62 ..
bathed and purified, having made the resolve, performed the birth-rite at that time.
3.1.15.5_103
gobhūtilahiraṇyādi brāhmaṇebhyo dadau bahu ..
He gave many cows, lands, sesame seeds, gold, and other gifts to the brahmins.
3.1.15.5_104
dvau putrau jyeṣṭhabhāryāyāḥ pūrvajo'varajastadā .. 63 ..
The senior wife had two sons: an elder and a younger at that time.
3.1.15.5_105
sarve vavṛdhire putrā ekādhikaśataṃ dvijāḥ ..
All the sons grew up—one hundred and one, O twice-born.
3.1.15.5_106
prauḍheṣu teṣu rājāsau tebhyo rājyaṃ vibhajya tu .. 64 ..
When they had reached maturity, that king, having divided the kingdom among them
3.1.15.5_107
dattvā ca prayayau setuṃ sabhāryo gandhamādanam..
and given it [to them], went with his wives to the bridge at Gandhamādana.
3.1.15.5_108
hanumatkuṃḍamāsādya tapo'tapyata tattaṭe .. 65 ..
Having reached Hanumatkuṇḍa, he practiced austerity on its bank.
3.1.15.5_109
mahānkālo vyatīyāya rājña stasya tapasyataḥ ..
A long time passed for that king while he was practicing austerity,
3.1.15.5_110
rājño dharmasakhasyāsya dhyāyamānasya śūlinam .. 66 ..
for King Dharmasakha meditating upon the Bearer of the Trident.
3.1.15.5_111
tato bahutithe kāle gate dharmasakho nṛpaḥ ..
Then, when a great amount of time had passed, King Dharmasakha,
3.1.15.5_112
kāladharmaṃ yayau tatra dhārmmikaśśāṃtamānasaḥ .. 67 ..
righteous and tranquil in mind, went to the law of time there.
3.1.15.5_113
patnyopi tasya rājarṣeranujagmuḥ patiṃ tadā ..
The wives of that royal seer also followed their husband at that time.
3.1.15.5_114
jyeṣṭhaputraḥ sucandropi saṃskṛtya pitaraṃ tataḥ .. 68 ..
The eldest son Sucandra too, having performed the funeral rites for his father,
3.1.15.5_115
akarocchrāddha paryaṃtaṃ karmāṇi śraddhayā saha ..
performed the ceremonies up to the ancestral rite with faith.
3.1.15.5_116
rājā sabhāryo vaikuṃṭhaṃ maraṇādatra jagmivān .. 69 ..
Because of death here, the king along with his wives went to Vaikuṇṭha.
3.1.15.5_117
sucandramukhyāste sarve rājaputrā mahaujasaḥ ..
All those immensely glorious princes, headed by Sucandra,
3.1.15.5_118
svasvarājyaṃ bubhujire bhrātarastyaktamatsarāḥ .. 3.1.15.70 ..
brothers devoid of envy, enjoyed each their own kingdom.
3.1.15.5_119
evaṃ vaḥ kathitaṃ viprā hanūmatkuṃḍavaibhavam ..
Thus has the glory of Hanūmatkuṇḍa been told to you, O brahmins,
3.1.15.5_120

as well as the most wonderful deeds of King Dharmasakha.
3.1.15.5_121

adhyāyamenaṃ paṭhate manuṣyaḥ śṛṇoti vā yaḥ susamāhito dvijāḥ ..
The human being who recites this chapter or hears it with a concentrated mind, O twice-born,

so'naṃtamāpnoti sukhaṃ paratra krīḍeta sārddhaṃ divi devavṛndaiḥ .. 73 ..
attains unending happiness in the next world and shall sport with the hosts of gods in heaven.
3.1.15.5_124
